The term "clay" is somewhat ambiguous un¬less specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: (1) as a diverse group of fine-¬grained minerals, (2) as a rock term, and (3) as a particle-size term. Actually, most persons using the term "clay" realize that it has several meanings, and in most instances they define it. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define be¬cause of the wide variety of materials that com¬pose it; therefore, the definition must be gen¬eral. Clay is a natural earthy, fine-grained ma¬terial composed largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates composed mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many defini¬tions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic; for example, halloysite and flint clay. As a particle-size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum-size particles in the clay-size grade are defined differently on various grade scales, Soil investigators and mineralogists gen¬erally use 2 micrometers as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than ap¬proximately 4 micrometers. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term "clay" for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or ar¬gillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally un¬derstood by those who use it. Clay is an abun¬dant natural raw material, and it has an amaz¬ing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial min¬erals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1970, 1971, and 1972 production and values according to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1972). Adequate reliable statistical data on which to summarize world production of clay are un¬available; this paragraph outlines the world re¬quirements for clay only in a very general way. According to one estimate, the world bentonite production in 1972 was 3.5 million tons (Anon., 1973a), but in the authors' opinion it was prob¬ably at least 5 million tons. The total fuller's earth produced was at least 1.5 million tons and may have been as much as 2 million tons. The total world kaolin production in 1972 was more than 10 million tons. Approximately 7 million tons of this total was produced in only two regions-the Georgia-South Carolina kaolin belt in the United States and the Cornwall re¬gion, United Kingdom. The world's 1972 out¬put of ball clay, which is also produced pri¬marily in the United States and the United Kingdom, was approximately 1.5 million tons or perhaps a little more. The total world fire clay production in 1972 was probably about one and one-half to two times and the miscellaneous clay production three times the United States production. As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodi¬ties, each having somewhat different mineral¬ogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

Fibrous silicon carbide was produced by thermal decomposition of certain silicates contained in graphite crucibles. Induction heating was used to produce the necessary temperature and thermal gradients. Both green and white fibers were mainly the beta modification even though each color grew within a different temperature zone. Alpha silicon carbide, present in insufficient amounts for X-ray detection, was identified by electron diffraction. The white fibers formed in a zone between 1,365° and 1,634° C (±50° C). The green fibers (less contaminated) formed in a much more narrow zone between 1,650° and 1,672° C (±50° C). The average lengths and widths of microscopic fibers grown by this method were 1.5 mm/0.002 mm (white) and 1.2 mm/0.0035 mm (green); however, same fibers observed by electron microscope had cross-sectional measurements of 150 to 300 A. Both differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis showed that silicon carbide fibers oxidized in air at temperatures above 500° C. Fibrous silicon carbide was indexed as a cubic cell with the dimensions a = 4.358 A. The density calculated from X-ray data was 3.217 g/cm3.

"In this study, Co-Cr-Mo alloys were produced using a mixture of Co304, Cr203 and Mo03 powders with Al powders by a Self-propagating high temperature synthesis process. SHS is a process of material synthesis that has revealed a number of reactants combinations capable of much higher energy release than conventional explosives. Al203 is added to the mixture to decrease the adiabatic temperature of the system. The thermodynamic simulations and the calculations of adiabatic temperature were examined with FactSage 6.2. In the SHS experiments, different Co304/ Cr203/Mo03 ratios were examined, and their effects on the metal recovery and alloy compositions were carried out. The samples were characterized by using chemical analysis, XRD, XRF and SEM/EDS techniques.IntroductionSelf Propagating High Temperature Synthesis (SHS) has significant advantages compared to the high technology furnace applications, such as very short processing time, simple operation, low energy requirement and low cost [l, 2]. In a SHS process, the ignition starts the combustion and propagates throughout the reactant mixture yielding the desired product. However, the disadvantages of the process such as inhomogeneous or unreacted products due to undesirable reaction rates needs to be overcome by changing some parameters such as ignition temperature, particle size, additive, atmosphere etc. [3, 4]. This work aims to establish a scientific and engineering background in the production of some cast Co-Cr-Mo master alloys via SHS (Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis) metallurgy which is attractive process technique regarding fast and low-cost production ability of cast alloys."

"In an earlier paper(1) the visits to several European mines using the bucket-wheel excavator (BWE) technology were described. It was during this trip that information was gathered on some interesting developments related to this type of mining, taking place elsewhere. It was learned that an across-the-pit system (XPS) comprised of a BWE and stacker has been operating successfully in a Hungarian mine for some time. Also the use of stackers with 225 m long booms and draglines with 125 m booms and 125m3 buckets in Soviet mines was indicated. Such equipment could be of great value to some Canadian strip mines, in particular the equipment proven useful in severe climatic conditions of U.S.S.R., similar to those of the Canadian prairies.To follow up on this information a field trip to Hungary and the U.S.S.R. was organized by the Department of Mineral Engineering, University of Alberta, to study the applications and performance of the systems in question. Visited were the Thorez mine near Visonta, Hungary, U.S.S.R. Ministry of Coal Mining and Skotchinski Institute in Moscow, Karagandashakhstoi Institute (designers of Ekibastuz mines in the Kazakh Republic) and Kostenko mine in Karaganda, Vostsibgiproshakht Institute (designers of Irsha Borodinski, Kharanovski, Moguntski and Tugnuski mines in Siberia) and the eastern Siberian Unit of the U.S.S.R. Coal Mining Ministry in Irkutsk as well as Azeiski mine located some 250 km northwest of Irkutsk. The findings of this field trip are presented."

THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10° C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important, in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

The Westerschelde Tunnel is located in the south of the Netherlands and links the two parts of the Provinces of Zeeland, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Zuid-Beveland, which are separated by the Westerschelde. Road traf?c has up till now taken the detour via Belgium or crossed by ferry. This unsatisfactory transport link signifies major economic disadvantages above all for Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The first fixed link for road traffic between the communities of Terneuzen and Borsele are to be created by means of the two 6.6 km long tunnel tubes down to 65 m below sea level.

In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

"Time domain spectral Induced Polarization (IP) data from the Tower, Jojay and Laurel Lake gold deposits in northern Saskatchewan are presented. The resistivity data shows both resistivity lows (due to fault, shear or alteration zones) and resistivity highs (due to silicification) in the area of the deposits. The high resistivity zones suppress and distort coincident IP responses, calling f or high quality surveys and special care in interpreting the IP data.Electromagnetic methods are not effective in locating the deposits. This is due, in part, to masking by conductive cover. The Jojay Lake deposit has a strong magnetic response. A more indirect magnetic association is seen for the Tower Lake deposit. The Laurel Lake deposit has no magnetic signature. Magnetic data are useful in defining structure in all cases.All three deposits are outlined in the IP survey results. IP anomaly amplitudes from the pole-dipole array are from two times (Tower and Laurel Lak e) to six times (Jojay Lake) background values. Gradient array IP anomalies are of less amplitude. The spectral time constant is short for the Tower and Laurel Lak e deposits and long for the Jojay deposit. This implies that the metallic sulphides in the Jojay deposit are more interconnected than those of the other two deposits. INTRODUCTIONInduced polarization / resistivity surveys are commonly used in gold exploration program s in the Canadian shield because the IP method is effective in detecting disseminated metallic sulphides which are often found associated with gold. Other common geophysical sur vey methods such as magnetics, VLF and EM are not generally capable of direct detection of disseminated sulphides. Since the introduction of the IP method in the 1950s, it has undergone continuous improvement. The most recent improvement is the development of time domain receiver s which sample the full de cay and record it in digit al form. This results in a more complete measurement of the response which permits analysis and enhancement of data quality and the derivation of a nomaly parameters which characterize the measured decay. This extension of conventional time domain IP methods is called spectra l IP, a term first introduced by Pelton et al. working in the frequency domain Spectral IP surveys are attractive because they allow the possibility of discriminating between IP responses which have similar amplitudes but are due to dissimilar geo logic targets. The discrimination can be important in the selection of IP anomalies for follow-up.Time domain spectral IP survey results are presented over three known gold deposits in northern Saskatchewan-Tower Lake, Jojay Lake and Laurel Lake. The surveys were initiated and supported by Cameco-A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation (formerly the Saskatchewan Mining and Development Corporation-SMDC) and were carried out by JVX Limited using the Scintrex IPR-II receiver and attendant spectral analysis software."

"Development of the final slope for the 340 m (1200 ft) high hanging wall at Cassiar Mine precipitated an area of deep seated instability involving an estimated 17.6 million tonnes. The deformation mechanisms involved squeezing of soft deformable serpentinite rocks in the toe which caused planar sliding and graben toppling of the stronger sedimentary rocks in the middle and upper sections of the slope. Although movement rates up to 150mm/day were recorded, by understanding the controls on failure, the mine was able to install a suitable monitoring system and complete the open pit with only minor loss of the mineable ore. Accelerated mining was required in the last full year of operation. This paper describes the deformation behaviour, failure mechanisms and back analysis results for the failure. The monitoring systems and operational aspects related to the failure are also presented.IntroductionCassiar Mine is located in steep mountainous terrain in northern British Columbia approximately 1200 km north of Vancouver (Fig. I). During the final mining phase of the open pit, instability developed in the approximately 340 m high hanging wall (east wall) slope. A unique graben toppling mechanism was identified based on detailed assessment of slope monitoring data and visual observations. Comprehensive slope monitoring enabled mining to continue even though movement rates as high as 150 mm/day were being recorded. Three-dimensional limit equilibrium back analyses and numerical modelling have been used to assess the various controls on the slope movements and to understand the failure mechanism."

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publications of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photographs are used on such scales as 1/5000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are interpreted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been 3stablished at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

Profiled on these pages are the eight RMCMI 1994-95 Scholarship Award Winners. Six of the eight winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Crested Butte, Colorado. Each received recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday. June 26, 1995. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. The first and last winners - Arizona and Wyoming - were absent. Besides receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year, as well as transportation, hotel lodging and meals at convention as guests of the Institute. This latter portion is paid by each state vice president. Because this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year also receive a second $750 for tuition credit in their senior year. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is that the recipient (1) Is a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit during the junior year. (2) Be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) Maintain good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Upon graduation Brad plans to find a job in a southwest mine. He is a totally self supporting student. PART I-PREPARATION OP METALLIC SINGLE CRYSTALS WITH ESPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINGLE CRYSTALS OP ZINC? As metals and alloys are composed, of, an aggregate of allotriomorphic crystals or grains, each possessing an individual orientation, the physical characteristics of a metal or an alloy are closely related to the properties of the individual crystals. The preparation and study of single metallic crystals are, therefore, matters of considerable importance. The advent of the X-ray spectrograph as a valuable metallurgical tool has magnified the importance of this subject, because the interpretation of some X-ray spectrographs is difficult unless single crystals are used in these studies. PREVIOUS WORK The first paper, as far as the writer knows, on the behavior or preparation of single crystals of metals is by Baker.1 He describes the behavior of extruded wires of sodium and potassium. These wires, when pulled in tension, instead of I showing the usual conical fracture common to most metals, had a chisel-shaped fracture when they were broken. I and II, Fig. 1, have a similar fracture. Baker checked his results by preparing single crystal wires from molten sodium and potassium and observing their properties. He prepared the wires by filling glass tubes, under oil, with the molten metal. The surfaces of the strained wires showed slip bands of remarkable clearness of which photographs are shown in his paper. He concluded that these wires were single crystals and "that the portions of the metal brought into play are cubes. Such cubes, when placed so that a plane through 'two opposite edges was parallel to the axis of the wire, would allow of lateral contraction by faces gliding over one another in one direction only and not in the direction at right angles."

The Boston & Montana Reduction Works at Great Falls, Mont., was formerly the reduction works of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining Co., and continued as the reduction plant for the independent company until June 1, 1910, when the consolidation of a large number of the operating companies of Butte was effected. It then became merged in the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as the Boston & Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The history of copper converting at this plant, while not covering the entire period of the commercial use of the process in this country, does cover by far the larger part of it, and as the operation of and appliances for the process have undergone many changes during the time, it may, perhaps, be of some interest to put the record of these changes into permanent form. The plan followed in the preparation of this paper has been to give first a brief chronological record of the principal events and changes and then, even at the risk of some repetitions, to give more detaild accounts of some of these changes under separate headings. IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

Numerous mine fires have resulted in high death tolls and considerable finan¬cial loss during the history of coal mining. In most instances the death toll and financial loss were greater because of inadequate fire-fighting facilities. The information in this report is presented in the hope it may serves as a guide in the selection, placement, and care of fire-protection systems in similar coal mines. The adequacy of fire protection varies according to size of operation, employment, and production. When fires occur on the surface or underground, measures must be applied quickly to prevent incipient fires from spreading. The record of coal-mine fires shows that, in many instances, facilities for combating fires were very meager or were absent. It would be virtually impossible to establish and maintain all the necessary facili¬ties that may be needed to extinguish widespread mine fires, but it is believed that the coal industry can ill afford less than the minimum required by other industries where the time element and avenues of escape are much more favorable.

"A number of alternative strategies exist to improve narrow orebody stope productivity and safety through mechanization. Particular attention is given to one of these: the development of an in-stope mining machine. This paper summarizes those characteristics of vein orebodies in Canadian mines which are considered to govern such mining machine design. It then reviews past and current attempts to develop hardrock mining machines which could potentially be applicable to narrow stope widths.IntroductionSerious interest is mounting to exploit new technology in the development of methods and machinery to stope narrow, hardrock, orebodies. The motives relate not only to the foreseen need to maintain or reduce production costs, but also to considerations of manpower availability, safety, ground control, ore recovery and dilution. This also follows the demonstrated success of technology application in larger metal orebody stoping, where machine development has been seen to lead to improved productivity as well as the future prospects of continuous mining systems and eventual automation, e.g. ITH blasthole drill development and bulk mining. This paper deals in particular with machine design for ore fragmentation in narrow, hardrock orebodies. It is considered that such machine design closely interacts with the over-all stoping method design and that both require consideration in parallel to ensure success in mechanization."
