The Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center has as a long-range objective the development of an equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated within the accuracy with which they are known. If this objective is to be realized, a method of calculation must be known. This report gives the principles of the method we use in such problems. A computer program was developed for predicting these properties, including those at the critical point, that is perfectly general and applicable to any equation of state. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, this computer program was used to evaluate thermodynamic properties of a Redlich-Kwong fluid in the two-phase region. Expressions for calculating various thermodynamic functions specific for this particular equation of state are derived. Numerical values are tabulated and graphs are presented for all functions calculated. It is shown that for a Redlich-Kwong fluid there are finite discontinuities in (1) the second temperature derivative of the Gibbs free energy or chemical potential at the critical point, (2) the second derivative of the vapor pressure curve with regard to the temperature on passing through the critical point, and (3) the measured heat capacity at constant volume on passing through the critical temperature when the calorimeter is filled to the critical density. It is also shown that the heat of vaporization is infinite for a Redlich-Kwong fluid at absolute zero.

"The National Safety Competition of 1930, the seventh annual contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to promote safety in the mines and quarries of the United States, has been concluded, and the five winners of the bronze trophies, The Sentinels of Safety,' which are provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine and awarded annually for the most excellent safety records, have been determined by the committee of award. One trophy was awarded to an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, one to a bituminous coal mine in the same State, one to an iron-ore mine in Michigan one to a gypsum mine in Ohio, and one to an iron-ore opencut mine in Michigan.These trophies were awarded to the companies for having the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked by all employees at their mine or quarry. Honorable mention was awarded to each mine or quarry that ranked second, third, fourth, or fifth in its own ground and to all plants that were operated without a lost-time accident during the contest year. Eighty-four out of 337 plants that competed for the trophies were operated without an accident that disabled an employee beyond the day on which the accident occurred.Under the contest rules, all mines and quarries were divided into five groups, four of the groups representing different classes of underground mining operations (anthracite, bituminous coal, metallic ore, and nonmetallic mineral), and the fifth group repre-senting the quarrying or opencut mining of minerals whether metallic or nonmetallic. Twenty-seven mines were included in the anthracite group, 68 in the bituminous group, 52 in the metal group, 24 in the nonmetallic-mine group, and 166 in the quarry and opencut-mine group. The total of 337 mines and quarries was 26 more than the number of plants that completed the contest during the previous year.The committee of award which determined the winners of the contest was composed of seven members, all known throughout the mineral industry but not connected with the United States Bureau of Mines. The committee included W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of Mining and Metallurgy; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association."

The following investigation constitutes a brief réumé of the more important binary magnesium alloys from the standpoint of metallo-graphic technique, and the effect of heat treatment on structure and properties. The comparative newness of the subject justifies this procedure as a preface to a more detailed study of each individual series of alloys. The work was started with the idea of practical application in the industry rather than as a theoretical investigation. The alloy compositions studied were selected as those most likely to show whether heat treatment would produce beneficial results. Furthermore, it was considered satisfactory to use commercial 99.9 per cent. magnesium, the best commercial grade of alloying ingredients, and to limit the time of heat treatment at the expense of incomplete equilibrium. These facts must be kept in mind when examining the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn. Preparation of Alloys All melts were made in an oil-fired cast-steel pot, approximately 12 in. dia, by 12 in. deep. Approximately 15 lb. of flux and 50 lb. of magnesium were melted and the calculated amount of alloying metal was added. After thorough alloying and puddling, the metal was chill cast in a graphite mold with four 1/2 by 1/2 by 4 in. bars fed from a common sprue and runner. The next higher composition alloy in a given series was made by adding the calculated amount of metal to the heel from the preceding cast. The pot was thoroughly cleaned after each series and new flux then introduced, thus avoiding possible contamination from earlier melts. The percentage compositions given in Table 1 are the calculated values. While not all alloys were analyzed, enough were checked to indicate that the reported compositions are correct to a few tenths of one per cent. "The McLeod sand pits, on the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River in Wheeler County, Ga., opposite Lumber City in Telfair Co., were examined by the Bureau of Mines under its war program of Investigation of Critical and Essential Minerals. The pits are about a quarter of a mile above the bridge, which is half a mile above Lumber City. Mrs. A. T. McLeod of Lumber City owns the land, including the pits. The property was inspected by an engineer of the Bureau of nines on March 8, 1945, on recommendation of Capt. Garland Peyton, director, Division of nines, Mining, and Geology of Georgia.The Mcleod pits are at the northwestern extremity of a mile-long series of old pits that were worked from about 1900 until the 1920's. The burning of the spur railroad bridge connecting the pits with the Southern Railway at Lumber City stopped mining operations. The pits on the south-east, or opposite, side of the Glennwood Road from the McLeod pits were first worked by F. L. Hinson and later, in 1921, by Mrs. n. H. Mobley. The glass sand was shipped to Tallapoosa, Ga., and Chattanooga, Tenn., where it was used in the manufacture of bottles for soft drinks. Some of the sand was used as molding and construction material. The sand was mined by hand shoveling it into wheelbarrows, which were unloaded on freight cars. The pits were partly refilled with overburden, so that it is impossible to estimate even roughly the amount of sand excavated.Analyses of samples of glass sand made years age3/ and later in 19404/ roughly check those made by the Bureau of Mines laboratory, except that in the former the iron oxide content usually was greater, attaining a maximum of 0.72 percent.The sand pits are in a valley slightly more than a quarter of a mile wide that lies along the northeast side of the Little Ocmulgee River. The land is either flat or marked by ridges only a few feet high. . A rather thick growth of scrub trees covers most of the valley. The surrounding country consists of gently rolling farm lands. The altitude of the valley is not known, but, judging by its distance from the seashore, it probably is about 200 feet. In addition to the Glennwood highway, which crosses the valley, several old sand roads lead to the pits."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

The final session of the meeting was preceded by a movie, "Contact That Kills," which was a color film clearly pointing out various causes of electrical accidents in mines and how such accidents could he prevented. This film was made underground and produced by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for use in teaching accident classes. President R. R. Williams, Jr., called the meeting to order and introduced Mr. Leif Arentzen of the Lee-Norse Company, Charleroi, Pennsylvania, who spoke on "Coal Mining in Australia." The text of his address is as follows: "I arrived in Australia in February of this year-my father sent me over there for an installation. He preceded me as he does in most things, and set up a showing of our machine in Australia. We had 200 of the top level coal mining men visit this showing. They were interested in what the Americans are doing and what the American manufacturer had to offer them. Conditions in Australia are very similar to our mining conditions in the United States and they have looked to us, the coal industry in general, because we have the know-how in answering some of their problems. They feel that European methods and their type of machines are too inadequate to cope with their conditions. My visit was to South Wales, 60 miles south of Sidney. Their mining operation resembled mining coal in Florida. The work is on about a 500-ft. elevation about three miles from the ocean and when you turn around and see about 30 miles of beach, it is quite a picture - the Pacific Ocean is so blue. The coal seam is about ten feet of relatively clean coal. Labor relations are very, very taught right now. They are agitated by a strong Communistic influence and their weekly publication is known as the ?Common Cause,? which is against mechanization of coal mines." Mr. Arentzen enlarged on the fact that America was the example they held before them and described the Australian coal men and their character.

"The increasing realization of the fire hazards involved in the use of wooden shingles caused the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association to beginsome five years ago a search for a suitable fire-resistant paint. The problem was submitted to the Educational Bureau of the Paint Manufacturers' Association of the United States and work was started by Mr. Henry L. Gardner at the Institute of Industrial Research, Washington D.C. in collaboration with Dr. Herman von Schrenk, a timber expert of St. Louis.The results of this,work have been described by Heckel, in ""Asbestos"", (Heckel G.B., Asbestos in the Paint Industry, Asbestos, Vol. 2, July, 1920,pp.- 5-10).,,who gives the following formula for one of the colors as typical: It will be noted from this formula that ""asbestine"" forms 33% of the total liquid pigment by weight or 31.8% of the solid constituents. Hockel in the article referred to describes this paint,as ""asbestiform"" and assumes since ""asbestine"" is magnesium silicate it must be the chrysetile variety of ""Asbestine"", however, is not asbestos but is a trade name for a fibrous variety of talc mined in the Gouverneur district, St. Lawrence County, New York. This rather natural error persists through the article and credits asbestos with many desirable properties which are characteristics of talc."

THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a two-lane highway tunnel located in southwestern Colorado on U.S. Highway 160 for the Colorado Department of Transportation by the Kiewit Western Company. The purpose of this project is to provide the excavation and temporary support for a highway tunnel 280 m (916 feet) long. The tunnel cross section is 14.3 m (47 feet) wide by 8.5 m (28 feet) high, 105 m2 (1,130 SF).Construction methods include conventional drill and blast excavation with rockbolt and shotcrete ground support. This unique tunnel is being constructed under alpine tunnelling conditions and in the immediate vicinity of active highway traffic.

The following experiments were conducted in order to study the influence of the rate of cooling through and below solidification on the dendritic structure (macrostructure) and microstructure of some hypo-eutectoid steel. The steel selected was of commercial grade and had the following composition: C, 0.40 per cent.; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.70; P, 0.099; S, 0.043. After melting in vacuum in an Arsem furnace, the various samples were allowed to solidify and to cool to room temperature as indicated in Fig. I. Samples were thus obtained representing all possible combinations of slow and fast cooling through the various ranges of temperatures indicated, namely: (I) zone of solidification or primary crystallization, (2) zone of granulation, and (3) zone of secondary crystallization. The location of the different temperature zones in the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig. 2. The authors adopted Belaiew's notations. The designations of the various samples readily indicate their treatment, as will be apparent from Table 1. "Present Situation:At the beginning of 1920 a general feeling of optimism was noted in many talc-producing districts. The industry seems to have recovered from the temporary depression of the first half of 1919 and many mills are running at capacity production with their entire output for 1920 contracted for. The imports of talc for 1919 were only slightly larger than in 1918 by weight and probably no more by value. Thus foreign competition has not begun to be seriously felt. Several new companies in this country have been organized, some to operate new deposits and others to continue the work done by others.An interesting phase of the present situation is the possibility of increased use of talc in paint. There is a shortage of barium sulfate used as a paint filler. Since, for some uses, talc is considered second only to BaSo4 as a filler for paint, it is possible that part of the shortage could be relieved by an increased use of talc.A series of physical tests upon all pigment materials used in the manufacture of paints is being conducted for the Paint Manufacturers Association of the United States. It is important that all types of talc be represented in these tests. Producers of finely ground talc, 200 mesh and finer, are urged to submit samples of at least two pounds each of these grades that are available to paint makers with trade name and quality data, to the Institute of Industrial Research, 19th & B Streets, N. W., Washington, D. C., where the tests are being conducted."

The Kokomo (Tenmile) mining district has had an output valued between $20 and $30 million, mostly from production of silver, lead, and zinc, since 1878. For many years before World War II, there was little production, as the complex nature of the ores made them unattractive at existing metal prices. Under the stimulus of the war, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines studied they district, and in October 1944 the Bureau of Mines began an exploration project, which included dia¬mond drilling, bulldozer trenching, and geophysical surveying. Project work was continued until March 1949, except for short recesses during 1945, 1947, and 1948. Forty-five diamond-drill holes, totaling about 13,000 feet, were drilled from underground and surface stations on the various properties in the district. Eleven bulldozer trenches, abut 2,400 linear feet, were excavated in an attempt to uncover the outcrop of the middle Quail limestone. These trenches ranged from 100 to 485 feet in length and reached a maximum depth of 15 feet. A limited geophysical investigation was made during the summer of 1946. The length of the traverses were: Magnetic, 990 feet; resistivity, 6,250 feet; and self-potential, 69,780 feet.

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

BY THE term mechanical mining is meant that operation, or series of operations, that replace the hand methods of mining. The first undercutting machine to operate in anthracite was placed in the Butler mine of the Hillside Coal & Iron Co., Dec. 23, 1910, by the Sullivan Machinery Co. The first Jackhamer used in the anthracite field was installed at the Wadesville colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. in Oct., 1912, by the Ingersoll-Rand Co. The first longwall conveyor was installed at the Dodge mines of the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Coal Co. in March, 1912. The first mechanical scraper equipment was installed in the Seneca mines of the Lehigh Valley Coal Co. in January, 1914. INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. ALFRED NOBEL was born at Stockholm on October 21st. 1833, and died on December 10th, 1896. Although Sobrero’s discovery of nitroglycerin dated back to 1847, this explosive was manufactured on a commercial scale for the first time in 1862, by Nobel at a factory which he erected at Heleneborg, near Stockholm. These works were entirely wrecked by an explosion in 1864. In 1865, he erected works, which are still in existence, at Winterviken, near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel introduced modifications in the manufacture of nitroglycerin which were the subject of a patent (see footnote No. 1), and at the same time, claimed a process for the detonation of nitroglycerin. Nobel states that, up to that time, the method used for the manufacture of nitroglycerin consisted in pouring glycerin, drop by drop, into a mixture of sulphuric acid and nitric acid contained in a refrigerating mixture. In order that the nitroglycerin should not be decomposed, the temperature was not allowed to rise above 0° C.
