"The design of rock sockets for drilled shafts and piles proves to be a challenge for the Design Engineer. The magnitude of loads on the shaft and the behavior of the rock are critical in determining the required socket length. Several acceptable methods are available in the literature to analyze a rock socket under a combination of axial loads, lateral loads and moments. This paper will present a state-of-the-art methodology to analyze rock sockets utilizing deformation characteristics of the rock. This design methodology was implemented in the design of a major project in New York City.The project discussed herein is a marine transfer station planned for construction at East 91st Street along the East River in Manhattan. In order to support the piers and platform structures at a site with relatively shallow depth of the bedrock, rock sockets were required for the drilled shaft foundations. Rock sockets were utilized to provide the required fixity to the foundations and the structures. Acting at the top of the rock sockets are large shear forces and moments created by the lateral loads transferred from the structure.Upon review of the available techniques, a simplified method was proposed and used to analyze the rock sockets with a significant magnitude of lateral loading. The method recognizes two mechanisms through which the lateral shear and moment are transferred to the rock; a) load transfer through horizontal resistance of rock and b) the vertical shear resistance of the bond between socket and rock.The first load transfer mechanism was analyzed using the p-y curve method based on a rock model developed by Reese. The second was analyzed using a bond stiffness derived from the formula and curves utilized in the AASHTO Specifications for calculation of rock socket displacement. By comparing the two mechanisms, the main contribution to the large horizontal shear force that developed in the rock socket is identified.The paper will present a summary of the design methodology utilized in determining the length of the rock socket. It is believed that the presented method will provide substantial cost saving in selecting the most economical and efficient design length."

"The thermal mass flow controller, or MFC, has become an instrument of choice for the monitoring and controlling of process gas flow throughout the materials processing industry. In the semiconductor industry, these MFCs are used on over 70% of the processing tools. Reliability and accuracy are major concerns for the users of the MFCs. Calibration and characterization technologies for the development and implementation of mass flow devices are described. Sources of inaccuracy in process gas handling are described, and a model to correct for these inaccuracies is outlined. A gravimetric calibrator is described that allows flow sensors to be calibrated in corrosive, reactive gases to an accuracy of 0.3% of reading, at least an order of magnitude better than previously possible. All described capabilities are implemented in a Department of Energy User Facility which is available to industry and universities to test and develop gas flow sensors and controllers and evaluate their performance related to environmental effects, reliability, reproducibility, and accuracy.IntroductionMaterials processing is at the heart of semiconductor manufacturing. To make today's advanced integrated circuits, silicon wafers are subjected to over 200 process steps. Most of these steps involve processes such as etching, implanting, diffusion, annealing, deposition, and lithography (resist deposition and hardening). Often one or more process gases are used to complete the process step. To achieve the quality and performance required in the micro devices, accurate measurement and control of these gases is essential. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in conjunction with the semiconductor industry, has been working to improve process gas measurement and control accuracy and reliability. Standardized test methods have been developed to characterize and benchmark the performance of mass flow controllers (MFCs), the method of choice for monitoring and controlling gas delivery. Testbeds have been designed and fabricated to produce repeatable and accurate data using these standards. Baseline testing was performed along with development of a unique mass flow instrument, the gravimetric calibrator."

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant project, with verifiable circuit processing performance improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond the equation alone. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study with plant staff from two milling operations and a grinding media supplier was undertaken. ?Task analysis? of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis called for the development of a number of system components, and ultimately yielded a ?Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/Improvement System.?

PROCESSES employing controlled atmospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been associated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and difficult problems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases Controlled atmospheres such as dissociated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties: especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,1 but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. "Building retaining walls in an urban area is becoming more diffi cult due to right-of-way restraints. Using standard concrete cantilever walls requires a construction easement behind the walls for installation, which for the most part is unavailable. To install these types of walls in a limited right-of-way requires extensive temporary walls to minimize the construction easement. Top-down construction walls utilizing tie-back anchors for support require either the purchase of the right-of-way or underground easements in the area of the anchors.These problems faced the Department on Interstate 75 widening in Knoxville, TN in an area of a large cut. A multi-story Insurance Building and a large commercial Retail Center were located at the top of the cut. To prevent any impact on the buildings, the walls had to be placed within a limited area. The option of buying the properties was prohibitively expensive. Due to the height of the two walls and the variability of the underling rock line, contiguous caisson pile cantilever walls were contemplated as the only wall type that would be appropriate. The cost of the two walls was estimated to be very close or even higher than the cost of purchasing the two buildings. The Department believed that there must be a better way to deal with the problem. A vertically tied-down pile frame wall constructed from the top-down with a concrete facing was developed. This allowed the construction of the walls to be restricted to the available limited area and provided substantial savings for the State. INTRODUCTIONThe widening of I-40/75 has been a major transportation project in the Knoxville area which is being constructed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The project includes 18 Retaining Walls and 13 Bridges. Two of the 18 Retaining Walls, refer to Figure 1, are to support two valuable properties, one being an insurance company housed in a multi-story offi ce building and the other a suburban shopping center which were appraised at $13.0 million and $5.0 million respectively. Due to the 31 ft. (9.5m) maximum height of each of the two Retaining Walls and the limited Right-of- Way of 15.0 feet (4.6m), a contiguous caisson pile cantilever wall was proposed for each of the two retaining wall sites with an estimated cost of $12.0 million each. The contiguous pile cantilever Wall is comprised of a line of caisson piles socketed into underlying competent bedrock. The design required that 4 ft. (1219mm) dia. piles be installed at 6 ft. (1.83m) centers, socketed into rock in order to provide lateral stability and restrict lateral wall movement to acceptable limits. The line of caissons would be fronted with a cast-in-place concrete face wall."

Dado que la industria metalúrgica peruana está a la vanguardia de la modernidad, en tanto actualiza sus conocimientos -a través de diversos congresos mineros-, como difunde el uso de nuevas máquinas de concentración de minerales- el objeto del presente estudio describe el problema de los operadores en las plantas de concentración del Perú. En este aspecto, es importante el uso de dichos equipos en el tratamiento de minerales puesto que extraen el máximo de su valor y reducen mínimamente su fundición en el país y el extranjero. Sin embargo, su buen funcionamiento no se limita a una óptima estructura del los equipos, o por la resonancia de su empleo, sino que responde a los operadores de plantas. Durante mucho tiempo,la mayoria de personal empleado en esta labor, se rehusó a trabajar con tales equipos dado sus hábitos, y si lo hacían era más una cuestión de aceptación que de propio conocimiento, tornándose la máquina, como algo secundario. Ante esta situación, se buscó formas de superar dicho problema a través de la enseñanza de los entrenadores, como del interés del trabajador, obteniéndose óptimos resultados en poco tiempo.

EASTERN COAL CORPORATION is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountain area of extreme Eastern Kentucky, The mountains are of sedimentary origin, and have been deeply eroded by streams as the area has been thrust up during geologic time. There are many seams of coal interspersed between beds of shale and sandstone. While some of the seams are thin, there are a number that can be economically mined. We are mining the Pond Creek, or No. 2 Gas Seam, at a rate in excess of 6,000 tons per day. Our central preparation plant utilizes tromp baths for the plus 3/8" size and Rheolaveur for the minus 3/8" portion. No provision was made to recover the fine coal, which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12 acre refuse pond. The pond is impounded behind the coarse refuse dump. This pond rose 15 feet last year. Obviously, no pond could stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method. Our first thought was that it would be necessary to dry the fine refuse sufficiently to permit inclusion with the coarse refuse, which is hauled uphill by monitor and then trucked to final disposal.

"The present study investigated the low-temperature creep mechanisms in ultrafine-grained (UFG) aluminum manufactured by accumulative roll bonding. UFG aluminum with grain size 0.39 µm showed steady state creep even at room temperature under low stresses as confirmed by the creep curves in the strain rate–strain plot. The low-temperature behavior was divided into four regions by three distinctive stresses, sI, sII and sIII: sI (=45 MPa) is denoted as the micro-yielding stress with which dislocations start movement, sII (=85 MPa) the dislocation-multiplication stress above which dislocations multiply with creep deformation, and sIII (=171 MPa) the conventional yield stress above which macroscopic plastic strain is generated. During low-temperature creep, below sI, negligible plastic strain is generated. Between sI and sII, creep deformation with stress exponent 2.5 occurred, which is accommodated by dislocation absorption into grain boundary and grain boundary sliding, similarly to the low-temperature creep of HCP metals. Between sII and sIII, creep deformation with stress exponent 7.0 occurred, whose mechanism is similar to the low-temperature creep of coarse-grained aluminum. Above sIII, power-law breakdown occurred.INTRODUCTIONIt is well understood that the creep deformation brings about at high homologous temperatures (T/Tm) of >0.4, where Tmis the melting point, with diffusion processes. Recently, the importance of aluminum is increasing for cryogenic temperature parts such as a metallic liner or a cap in high pressure-hydrogen vessels, and the presence of creep behavior in aluminum at room temperature has become recognized (Matsunaga, 2013;Kassner, 2015).In HCP metals and alloys, especially intitanium, steady-state creep behavior appears at room temperature with apparent activation energy of1/10 of that for self-diffusion(Neeraj, 2000; Matsunaga, 2009).On the other hand, Kassner (2015) claims that aluminum shows creep behavior at room temperature with apparent activation energy of 4/5of that forself-diffusion, but never reaches the steady state. We should note that it is derived from the data obtained from short-term creep tests of few hour, and Matsunaga (2013) already claimed the presence of steady state in room temperature creep in aluminum with activation energy of 1/5of that for self-diffusion.The mechanisms for low temperature creep are considered different between HCP and FCC metals: in HCP metals, grain boundary sliding is observed and is thought to accommodate piled-up dislocations at grain boundaries through absorbing them. The so-called slip-induced grain boundary sliding occurs with low number of activated slip systems(Matsunaga,2009).On the other hand, in FCC metals, many activated slip systems bring about work hardening with dislocation cell structure formation. In the initial stage of creep, it results in primary creep (Kassner, 2015), but Matsunaga (2013) claimed that once the annihilating of a cross-slipped dislocation to another reaches balance, steady state is established. It has been, however, strongly required to show more convincing experimental verification for the presence of steady state in FCC metals at low temperature."

In response to increasing national energy requirements. highlighted by the continuing growth in demand for coal for the generation of electric power the output of bituminous coal and lignite in 1965 passed the 500-million-ton mark for the first time since 1956, thus emphasizing the steady up-ward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons in 1961. There were corresponding upward trends in consumption, exports mechanization, and productivity. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1965-512 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 487 million tons produced in 1964. The gain was attributed largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities, greater use at coke ovens, and an increase in exports.

THIS review of the past year's progress in iron and steel metallurgy presents examples of only a few of the interesting or important accomplishments made in the United States. In the field of iron ore concentration increased attention was given to the study of the more difficultly separated wash ores and some progress was made in tabling. One difficulty with the table, in concentrating iron ore where the percentage of concentrate in the feed is large, has been the removal of fine silica from the thick layer .of concentrates in the cleaning zone. One company has -Made an important contribution toward the solution of this problem by an extension of the well-known plateau principle. By a special riffling of the plateau section of the table, the concentrates are crowded together. This action forces the fine silica to the top of the bed in the cleaning zone, whence the cross-flowing currents of water -can wash it into the middling product. Some work has been done on the application of froth flotation to the concentration of iron ores. Laboratory experiments were made at the Colorado School of Mines in which hematite was, successfully floated. Using oleic acid as a frothing and collecting agent and sodium carbonate as the conditioning agent, a high recovery of rich ,concentrate was obtained. KEYNOTE of the mining geology sessions was the preparation for an extensive war with all that this implies as to the need for strategic minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic. Nevertheless the sessions also included many papers of less urgent, more theoretical interest. The stress of wartime production had the effect of giving an unusually full and rich program, the longest in recent years, with sessions continuing virtually throughout the meeting. Some papers dealt with geophysical prospecting as applied to mining geology; others were concerned with the grand strategy of mineral reserves and thus involved the industrial minerals; such "borderline" subjects were presented before sessions held jointly with the Geophysics Committee or the Industrial Minerals Division.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo investigar o efeito do Y na precipitação da fase δ na superliga de níquel 718 e correlacionar a caracterização microestrutural com a precipitação/dissolução das fases, por análise térmica. As ligas A, B e C solubilizadas e superenvelhecidas foram caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e de transmissão, com o auxílio de EDS para identificar as fases presentes nas ligas. A caracterização microestrutural foi corroborada com técnica de calorimetria diferencial de varredura. Resultados mostraram que a adição de Y influencia no tamanho de grão e consequentemente na fração de δ precipitada. A adição de Y modificou a cinética de precipitação de δ, que variou de acordo com o teor de ítrio adicionado.

THE American Engineering Council, which is the working body of The Federated American Engineering Societies, held its first meeting in Washington, Nov. 18 and 19, 1920. The Federated American Engineering Societies was formed in Washington in June and is composed of engineering and technical societies, national, state, local and regional. These Member Societies elect delegates to the American Engineering Council, which is the administrative body of the Federated. The meeting was called to order by Richard L. Humphrey, Chairman of the Joint Conference Com¬mittee, and the program (which is printed below) was carried out without substantial change by E. S. Carman, who was elected temporary chairman. Under the Constitution, the Council appoints an Executive Board, the members of which are chosen according to the proportional membership of the vari¬ous Member Societies in their respective districts. Under this plan, with the present membership, 'the national societies will have 14 members and the local societies 6 members on the Executive Board.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map. Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90° in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. HISTORY. On the discovery of the silver-lead hearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of abort 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. "The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. Talc mining ·in the state of New York was first started about 1876, but important production did not start until 1880, when about 4,000 tons were shipped, In 1883 the production was about 6,000 tons valued at $75,000, or an average of $12.50 per ton, From this date the production gradually inc~eased to a peak of 93,236 tons in 1916, valued at $961,510 or about $10,30 per ton, In 1918 the production declined to 71,167 tons valued at $902,100, or about $12,70 per ton. For ma.ey years New York ,-Jas the largest producer in the United states, but in 1917 and 1918 its output was surpassed by Vennont in tonnage thou[;h not in value. In June, 1920, there were three companies producing talc in the Gouverneur district, st. La,1Tence Co'Ul'lty, and one near Natural Bridge.

Após a sanção da RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC que entrou em vigor em 01/07/2006 proibindo a utilização de seis substâncias perigosas, sendo elas: chumbo, mercúrio, cádmio, cromo hexavalente, bifenilos polibromados e éteres difenil-polibromado fabricantes de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos tiveram que restringir os usos de tais substâncias. Com isto, as placas de circuito impresso dos equipamentos passaram a ser identificadas com a sigla RoHS ou outra identificação que indique o atendimento a diretiva. O presente trabalho visa analisar um lote de placas mãe de computadores obsoletos direcionados ao CEDIR-USP (Centro de Descarte e Reuso de Resíduos de Informática) no período de 01/01/2013 a 30/05/2013, identificando-as como “lead free” ou “comuns”, a fim de verificar a relação entre placas livres de substâncias perigosas e placas contendo tais substâncias. O lote possuía quantidade aproximada de 3.230 placas. Após a separação, as placas “lead free” foram classificadas por marca e nacionalidade. O resultado da pesquisa mostrou que mesmo após onze anos da edição da diretiva o percentual de placas livres de substâncias perigosas ainda é muito baixo. Cerca de 97,80% das placas de circuito impresso coletadas ainda possuem em sua composição substâncias perigosas. Verificou-se que todas as placas “lead free” encontradas são de origem chinesa e seus fabricantes são: Gigabayte, Itautec, Intel e CE. O estudo também classifica a origem dos resíduos como: industriais, da própria universidade ou residenciais.

The 2003 redoubling in power to 68MW on the Polokwane Smelter furnace represented a significant intensification in platinum group metal (PGM) smelting. Combined with onerous ‘green’ PGM concentrate smelting requirements, this yielded conditions unusually corrosive to copper coolers and refractories. This presented unexpected operational and design challenges to reliable crucible operation and maintenance. Combined with specific operational control intervention, development of protective coatings has led to the life of water-cooled copper components improving from 9 to 40 months. The furnace matte endwall was extended in 2010 to address accelerated wear of refractories and the potential risk for contact of copper components by superheated matte. An 18 month planned endwall rebuild cycle has been demonstrated (versus catastrophic failure within 9 months). Patents are playing an increasingly important role in the business world. A diverse patent portfolio can enable a company to secure a monopoly within the market, which can provide a competitive advantage over competitors. At the same time, possessing a diverse patent portfolio greatly increases the value of a company's intangible assets. This paper provides an overview of the patenting process as it pertains to the fields of metallurgy and mining, and summarizes some general patenting strategies. A review of new "green technology" initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided.
