"Modelling and simulations for mineral processing plants have been successful in replicating and predicting predefined scenarios of an operating plant. However, there is a need to explore and increase the potential of such simulations to make them attractive for users. One of the tools to increase the attractiveness of the simulations is through applying optimization schemes. Optimization schemes, applied on mineral processing simulations, can identify non-intuitive solutions for a given problem. The problem definition itself is subjective in nature and is dependent on the purpose of the operating plant. The scope of this paper is to demonstrate two optimization schemes: Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) using an Individual Discipline Feasible (IDF) approach. A two stage coarse comminution plant is used as a case plant to demonstrate the applicability of the two optimization schemes. The two schemes are compared based on the problem formulations, types of result and computation time. Results show that the two optimization schemes are suitable in generating solutions to a defined problem and both schemes can be used together to produce complementary results. INTRODUCTION The comminution process for a mineral processing plant consists of multiple crushing and classification stages and aims to produce fine material to liberate ore from the minerals. The modelling and simulation of such processes are well established using static process models (King, 2001; Napier-Munn et al., 1996). A recent development in the dynamic modelling for such processes has shown further increase in fidelity compared to the static process models (Asbjörnsson, 2015). The developed simulations can be utilized to design, operate and control mineral processing plants based on the requirements of users (Bhadani et al., 2017). Typically, the requirements in the operation of the comminution process are conflicting in nature, as for instance, reduction of power draw by process units, maximization of production of fine materials, and increasing utilization of the process units. These conflicting requirements leads to a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) problem to operate a mineral processing plant. The MOO problems are normally referred to as non-linear problems and its fundamental understanding with respect to process behaviour is difficult to achieve."

"A new heat recovery system is proposed. This system uses the endothermic heat of gasification reaction instead of sensible heat to recover the energy of molten blast furnace slag. The gasification technological parameter in molten blast furnace was calculated and the exergy of the system was analyzed. The gasification reactions were studied kinetically by the isothermal thermogravimetry using STA409PC thermal analyzer. The results showed that, according to different gasification agent, this system can produce syngas with different C-H ratio. The exergy efficiency of this system is high and its internal exergy loss rate is about 11%. This method can bring huge economic and environmental benefits which are important to the survival and sustainable development of iron-steel enterprises. The molten BF slag acts as not only thermal media but also good catalyst. The kinetic parameters on gasification reaction with different types of coal used differ from each other.IntroductionEnergy consumption in the iron-making process is about 50%~60% of the total energy input. The blast furnace is very important in the iron & steel process. So energy conservation and emission reduction about blast furnace is very important. In recent years, in order to recovery energy, many new technologies such as TRT (Top gas pressure Recovery Turbine) and CCPP (Combined Cycle Power Plant) were used in iron-making. But the energy of molten blast furnace (BF) slag has only been used limitedly so far.Molten BF (Blast Furnace) slag is the byproduct of iron-making at the high temperatures range from 1723 to 1923K, and has a large amount of sensible heat remaining. The yield of molten BF slag is about 300 kg per ton of pig iron. In conventional processes, molten BF slag is quenched rapidly using a large amount of water to produce a glassy-granulated slag. The quenching slag must be dried before it can be used in cement manufacture. During the process, a large amount of water was consumed and the energy of molten slag can not be recovered. At the same time, it causes environmental pollution problems. So the critical problems of the process are not only energy recovery of molten slag and reducing emission of H2S and SO2, but also guaranteeing the subsequent use value of slag. For this propose, many new technologies were investigated to recover the thermal energy of molten slag. The promising methods are dry granulation [1-4] and reforming of methane [5-9]. The method, utilization of reaction heat instead of latent heat and sensible heat, is quite attractive from viewpoints of energy storage without heat loss, and makes a connection to other industry. But both of them are in laboratory. In this paper, coal gasification in molten BF slag was used to recover the energy of molten BF slag. The gasification technological parameter in molten BF was calculated and the exergy of the system was analyzed. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.

"A computational model to investigate solid/liquid phase change transitions for binary alloy under directional solidification is presented. Conservation equations are developed by using an homogeneous formulation. A second order accuracy method of time and space based on finite volume approximation has been evaluated by comparing results to spectral solution for time-dependent solutal convection developping in a melted alloy. For extended model to solid/liquid interface effects time amplification of solutal perturbation injected near the interface is described before considering solutal convection is melt.IntroductionThe enthalpy method gives a front fixing approach for energy equation without introducing coordinate transformation. The interfare position is recovered a posteriori [1]. A number of authors have extended this approach so as to include the convection phenomena within the two phase 'mushy region' [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].We have developed a time-dependent enthalpy-porosity formulation for directional solidification [4, 6, 8]. The interaction between solid and liquid phases is modelised by a Darcien type force in the phase change area. The behaviour of the melt is similar with the flow of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium. This force is proportional to the relative phase velocity. It corresponds to a damping force depending on the anisotropic permeability of the 'mushy zone'. The permeability depends on the liquid fraction and on the size of·solidification microstructures. An informative discussion of a new slant on the general approach of continuum mechanics needed to analyze the formation of mushy zone is given in [12]. The method is extended to the presence of species diffusion: the solutal Stefan condition which expresses the solute incorporation or rejection across the interface is accounted implicitly in a species equation valid in all the domain [14, 15]."

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E. Surface tension, density and viscosity coefficient of acidic copper sulfate solutions simulating electrolyte solution for electrolytic production of copper have been measured and are summarized as a function of the solution composition and temperature. Nickel sulfatc is taken to be a representative coexisting sulfate that affects the physical properties of the copper sulfate electrolyte solution. The sulfates in the solutions, including sulfuric acid, increase the physical properties under consideration. Gelatin, representing organic additives for electrolyte solution, was found to sensitively affect the surface tension of the solution at low concentration of up to 200mgIL. The surface tension was markedly lowered by the addition of gelatin and the increasing concentration of gelatin led to a more pronounced decrease in the observed values. The surface tension gradually increases with time after addition of gelatin and the increase is enhanced by higher acid concentration and higher temperature. The observed change in the surface tension is considered to reflect the preferential adsorption of gelatin to the bubble-solution interface and the decomposition of gelatin due to hydrolysis to form various molecules having smaller molecular weights.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association was incorporated as the NZ Mineral Exploration Association in 1982, with a membership that consisted of the gold exploration companies then active in New Zealand . As its membership broadened, it changed its name to the Mining and Exploration Association in 1994, and more recently the Minerals Industry Association. It is a non-profit-making incorporated society relying on voluntary membership, and is not funded by industry levies.   It has employed a full time executive director since 1988 when Robyn Ross was appointed, followed by John Pfahlert (1991 - 1996) and now with Doug Gordon managing the Association.   The Association is one of a number of organisations that represent the mining industry in New Zealand. Others include the Coal Association of NZ (CANZ), the Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), The West Coast Commercial Gold Miners Association and Minerals West Coast.   NZMIA membership comprises the main exploration and mining companies that account for over 80 per cent of New Zealand Æs mine output, and nearly all of its exploration investment. Its membership has expanded from gold exploration to encompass exploration and mining companies active in coal, gold, aggregates and industrial minerals.   The Association has developed a National Minerals Strategy that determines its priorities, implemented via a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee. This group was established six years ago to advise the Associate Minister of Energy on issues relating to the long term development of the minerals sector in New Zealand.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(C03l2Fj. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in flUorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has come into prominence in the last 15 years and increased considerably during the war. In contrast to other light metals, such as aluminum and magnesium, beryllium is relatively hard, has a high melting point (1,285° C.), and other properties that make it resemble steel in many respects. It has a specific gravity of 1.85, is only slightly heavier than magnesium (specific gravity 1.74), and is appreciably lighter than aluminum (specific gravity 2.7). Its lack of ductility prevents its use as a structural material, but this difficulty may be overcome in the future by the use of various alloy forms. The only important commercial alloy in which beryllium is used today is with copper. The addition of small percentages (1/2 to 2 percent) of beryllium to copper imparts properties to the alloy that make it desirable for use in springs carrying electrical current, particularly at high temperature. Many other uses of berylliam are known, and new uses are being found constantly that make the metal of increasing interest.Possibly the main factor preventing the use of more beryllium is the lack of a large source of beryllium ore. Many beryllium minerals are found as minor constituents of natural deposits, some of the more common ones being beryl (Be3Al2(Si03)6), chrysoheryl (Be A1204), helvite (3(Mn, Fe) Be Si04. MnS), and phenacite (Be2Si04). Of the known beryllium minerals, beryl is by far the most common and has been found distributed rather widely throughout the world. It usually occurs associated with granitic rocks and is commonly found as a constituent of granitic pegmatite."

When it was announced that the economy grew at an annual rate of 4.7 percent in the Fourth Quarter of 1992, it appeared that our long awaited recovery from recession was here. Unfortunately that much growth proved to be unsustainable, and in the First Quarter of 1993, the number dropped to less than one percent. Today it is clear that the recovery is continuing, but at a very slow rate. One of the Most disturbing statistics during this recovery is that unemployment has not improved as one would expect but has been hovering around 7 percent for over a year, making this recovery a ?jobless? one. In a recent Harvard Business School presentation, a professor reported that the United States has slipped from its leadership position in almost every manufacturing category since World War II. From the production of cars to consumer electronics, we have lost significant world market share to others, most notably Japan and Germany. Obviously this is not new news, but the magnitude of the loss and the number of industries affected was surprising to me. The result has been that our negative balance of payments has soared, and the United States of America now has the dubious distinction of being one of the world's largest debtor nations. It has been common for politicians, and political want-a-be's, to blame all of our trade problems on industry. They say that the moguls of American industry spend too much time seeking short-term gain at the expense of long-term growth. They say that we are interested more in our own perks and economic security than in producing quality products that can compete in the world marketplace. One of the stared goals of the Clinton Administration is the targeting of strategic industries to receive help from the government so they can compete on the world stage more effectively. Personally. It is recently recognized that the iron reduction and melting as well as the slag separation of a composite of granular iron ore and coal are completed in a very short period of about 10 minutes when the composite is rapidly heated up to approximately 1673K. These phenomena are expected to be applied to a new iron-making process. The mechanism of iron ore reduction and iron-slag separation during rapid heating has not yet been revealed and the fundamental research has just started. Carburization of the reduced iron is regarded as one of the most important steps in this process. In the present work, the composite was prepared from four kinds of coal or graphite as a carbon source and electrolytic iron powder as a completely reduced iron ore. The temperature at which the liquid formation and iron carburization occurred was monitored. Direct observation of smelting reduction behavior was made by a confocal laser-scanning microscope combined with the infrared image-heating furnace to clarify the effect of molten ash on iron carburization. It was found that the meltdown temperature of composite became lower as the melting temperature of coal ash decreased. From the observed result, it was presumed that the liquid slag would act as an important media for the carbon transfer from coal to iron. The carburization mechanism during the smelting reduction was estimated as follows. When slag containing iron oxide melted down and contacted carbon, iron oxide in the slag was reduced and the formation of the metallic iron particle as well as the its carburization occurred simultaneously at the slag-carbon interface. Carburized iron particle was carried from slag-carbon to slag-iron interfaces due to the slag convection flow caused by the difference of the interfacial tension between the carbon-slag and iron-slag interfaces. Carburization of reduced iron could proceed with a repeat of the above-mentioned process.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

Recent results from electrochemical measurements demonstrate that trithiocarbonate (TTC) collectors are more readily oxidized to their corresponding dithiolates than the dithiocarbonate/xanthate (DTC) collectors. Based on the traditional analysis of collector adsorption, trithiocarbonates might then be expected to be effective for bulk sulfide mineral flotation. Previous bench-scale flotation research had shown that TTC collectors are very effective for the flotation of copper sulfide minerals and PGM (platinum group metal) sulfide minerals. More recently, the TTC collectors were evaluated for auriferous pyrite recovery in benchscale plant scale flotation testing in the United States and in plant tests at Anglogold in South Africa. TTC collectors were also applied in bench-scale testing of a PGM ore. In each case an improved separation efficiency was realized. Fundamental studies at the University of Utah examining the effect of collector structure (functional group, -O-CS2 versus .S-CS2), specifically with respect to auriferous pyrite flotation, are in progress. The effect of collector structure was evaluated with air as well as nitrogen as the flotation gas medium. Experimental techniques utilized included electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements to evaluate mineral hydrophobicity and infrared spectroscopy to explain collector adsorption phenomena at the mineral surface.

The example demonstrates the dynamic nature of the process of classification and attests to the necessity of addressing both the aggregate needs of broad-scale resource planning and the specific needs of individual property evaluation. Problems that ,remain in fixing the classification of a given uranium resource include the uncertainty in estimating the quantity of undiscovered resources and resolving the differences that may exist in deciding when the drill-hole spacing is adequate to determine the tonnage and grade of discovered resources.

The need for the removal of mercury from the precious metals extraction circuits may be influenced by process, environmental, as well as by occupational hazard reasons. In these circuits mercury is mainly present as cyanide complexes. The effectiveness of any stabilization method will be influenced by the high thermodynamic stability mercury-cyano species exhibit in an aqueous solution. In this study, we have investigated the utility of the trisodium salt of trimmercapto-s-triazine (TMT) for precipitation of mercury from the corresponding cyano-complexes. The influence of pH molar ratio of TMT to Hg, coagulant and flocculant additions, excess of free cyanide, as well as the presence of other metal-cyano species on the effectiveness of mercury precipitation were investigated in detail. Also, a "teal world" precious metals mill effluent initially containing ~7 ug/mL (ppm) of Hg was treated and A was found that greater than 99.8% of the mercury was removed from the solution as am insoluble Hg/TMT complex.
