ALTHOUGH few changes can be reported in educational methods at the mineral technology schools during 1940, other events have taken place of direct interest to, and that will have a profound effect upon, mineral industry education on the United States. In the erection of new buildings, some notable changes have been made on the campus, The U.S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, was dedicated on May 20. The construction and equipment of this building cost between $300,000 and $400,000. It will be the general headquarters for the metallurgical division of the Bureau and will have a pronounced effect upon the mineral industries research program at the University.

TO SERVE their primary function of balancing supply with demand. crude-oil prices must not only return full cost plus a reasonable earning to the efficient producer but they must also offer an additional reward to stimulate exploration sufficiently to maintain adequate reserves. High prices increase the volume and efficiency of exploration; low prig e- -Idle exploration. Over the last decade average prices for crude oil have been much lower than for the proceeding ten years, and lower even than the average over the life of industry. Under these circumstances no one should be surprised to learn that over this same recent period of discovery of new oil fields has also lagged and fallen below its average level for the previous decade. Crude oil prices have been too ion to support the required activity in wildcatting.

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

THE future of the steelmaking industry of the Birmingham, Ala., district is closely related to and, in a large measure, dependent on the development of workable, economic processes of ore concentration. Operations thus far in the area have been possible only because of the fortuitous occurrence of iron ore, fluxing stone, and coking coal-all the primary iron-making materials- within a 25-mile radius of the blast furnaces. Commercial ore of the district consists mainly of a 10 to 20-ft hematite-calcite-silica bed locally known as the "Big Seam," a component of the Clinton formation of Silurian Age. At present mining rates, this ore will be available for a number of years. It is largely mined under 1000 to 2000 ft of cover and transported on 15 to 20" slopes that, in some instances, are as much as 10,000 ft long. Under these conditions, particularly with increasing distances from face to portal, mining costs are gradually becoming disproportionately high. Although not a major factor thus far, it should also be noted that the average annual ore output of the district is gradually be- coming more siliceous.

"Complexity in soil-foundation interaction and subsoil nonlinear behavior cause difficulties and uncertainties in evaluating the actual values of foundation design factors such as settlement. The acquired continuous records of Cone Penetration Test (CPT) can be used to determine the soil profile and characteristics those are applicable in the geotechnical design. In this paper, it has been attempted to present a new non-linear stress-strain approach to estimate the foundations settlement by using CPT data in the form of soil behavior classification charts. This new approach is based on Janbu method (1960s and also 1998). Instead of using fixed and constant values for stress exponent (j) and modulus number (m), continuous coefficient variations can be used. The proposed approach also can be used as a new method to predict pile group settlement. A data bank has been compiled containing twenty-two practical case histories to investigate the accuracy of the predictions made by the proposed and available common methods. The comparisons indicate that the proposed approach is relatively able to predict the settlement close to their real values. Therefore, it can be considered as an alternative method based on valuable CPT data and nonlinear stress-strain approach for foundations and pile groups settlement estimation.INTRODUCTIONComplexity in soil behaviour for settlement analysis is the result of non-linear and time dependent stressstrain behaviour of soils, their elasto-plastic performance under loading and unloading situation and also effects of stress history (Holtz et al., 2011; Fellenius, 2015). Hence, many relations and equations have been proposed to predict foundation settlement, where most of them are based on typical different parameters such as soil stiffness (E), foundation width (B), contact pressure (q) and pressure developing in depth (Janbu, 1967 also 1998; Briaud and Gibbens, 1999; Uzielli and Mayne, 2012).The Janbu approach for settlement estimation, proposed by Janbu in the early 1960s, combines the basic principles of linear and non-linear stress-strain behaviour of material. The method is applied to all types of soils. The relation between stress and strain is a function of two non-dimensional parameters which are unique for any soil: a stress exponent, “j”, and a modulus number, “m”. The Janbu relations are derived from the definition of tangent modulus by the following expression:"

No Lingotamento Contínuo de Planos (placas de aço) o número de corridas realizadas em um único distribuidor é um indicador de performance operacional de enorme relevância para a sustentabilidade do processo. Ligados ao desempenho deste indicador estão os resultados de índices como produtividade, redução de custos, segurança e qualidade. Buscando melhorar este indicador a ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América do Sul – Unidade Tubarão iniciou no final de 2012 um projeto multisetorial subdividido em vários subprojetos satélites para aumentar o número de corridas em um único distribuidor visando obter ganhos nos índices técnicos descritos anteriormente. A proposta de meta oriunda deste projeto visava aumentar em no mínimo 70% os valores médios de corridas em um único distribuidor no Lingotamento Contínuo de Placas, o que representaria ganhos superiores a 1,2 milhões de dólares por ano. Neste trabalho é apresentada a metodologia definida para o projeto com suas respectivas etapas, o resumo de alguns subprojetos de sustentação e os resultados que já foram atingidos.

A morfologia, dimensões e composição química de tribocamadas são fortemente dependentes das pressões e temperaturas existentes no contato e oriundas das reações das superfícies entre si, com a atmosfera, com os lubrificantes e contaminantes presentes no contato. No presente artigo foi analisada a formação de tribocamadas em pares DLCaço inoxidável testados por 180, 500, 1000 e 2500 horas em atmosfera de gás refrigerante R134a sem a presença de óleo lubrificante. A caracterização foi realizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (MEV-EDS) (morfologia e composição química) e interferometria ótica de luz branca (dimensões). Nas análises por MEV-EDS foram identificadas tribocamadas que se apresentaram mais pronunciadas nas superfícies do aço inoxidável sendo as mesmas oriundas de transferências mútuas entre os pares tribológicos bem como oxidação. A espessura das tribocamadas, por sua vez variou de 100 a 500 nm. Os resultados revelam que as tribocamadas são quimicamente estáveis e que suas espessuras não variam significativamente após mil horas de ensaio.

Este trabalho visa analisar a temperabilidade dos aços ABNT 1045 e ABNT 4140 através do ensaio Jominy e correlacionar suas propriedades com a variação microestrutural devido ao gradiente de transferência de calor através dos corpos de prova, também como analisar o efeito dos elementos de liga presentes. O ensaio Jominy foi realizado segundo a norma ABNT A255-10. Foi observado que o aço ABNT 4140 apresenta maior temperabilidade que o ABNT 1045 devido à maior profundidade de têmpera e, por conseguinte, apresentou produtos de transformação martensítica em profundidades maiores do corpo de prova. Visto que o teor de carbono em ambos os aços é aproximadamente igual, a maior temperabilidade do ABNT 4140 se dá devido aos elementos de liga presentes. Os elementos de liga do ABNT 4140 contribuem para uma maior percentagem de carbono equivalente, quando comparado ao ABNT 1045, deslocando assim o diagrama de transformação isotérmica para a direita, reduzindo então a taxa de resfriamento crítico.

Corrosion testing was performed in white liquor from a Brazilian Kraft mill. Specimens of duplex stainless steel (DSS) and lean duplex (LDSS) were exposed at 170 °C for 30 days to simulate conditions of the digester. Corrosion rates were determined from weight loss measurements. After this exposure, the corrosion products formed on the steel surface was characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with EDS, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). EBSD can be used to quantify of basis balance phases in DSS and LDSS. General corrosion rates for UNS S32304 LDSS were higher than the UNS 31803 DSS in industrial white liquor at 170 °C for 30 days. XPS and XRD analyses indicated that the film formed after the immersion test may be consisted by Fe and Cr oxides and sulphides.

By observing different coal char’s microstructures and microscopic morphologies during the coking process, the characteristics of COREX coal char’s microstructure and properties were analyzed. MCRI and MCSR were used to respectively describe the reactivity and the strength after reaction of coal char, with those of BF’s coke for reference, and then the physical meaning of MCRI and MCSR were given. MCRI and MCSR were determined by the composition of coal char. For the two kinds of COREX coal, the formula to forecast the hot performance of coal char was set up by making a multiple linear regression between the hot performance and microstructure of the coal char at 1100℃, and the predictive values of coal char’s hot performance at 600℃, 800℃ and 1000℃ coincided well with the measured values.

Longwall mining and pipelines have coexisted since longwall mining was introduced into the United States. How the pipeline operator reacts to longwall mining under their line depends on many factors. This paper outlines the process the pipeline operator goes through to determine the appropriate response when their pipeline is being undermined. Typical mitigation procedures are reviewed. Finally, the paper looks at current design practices for new pipelines that are expected to be undermined during their lifetime.

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota will house four large detector tanks located in deep underground caverns. Construction of the supporting infrastructure required for this project is no complete including installation of a waste rock conveyance system and drill and blast excavation of several supporting drifts and chambers. This paper will discuss the design and construction of these pre-excavation and early works elements, and the overall project schedule as it closes in on commencement of cavern excavation activities.

O equipamento utilizado na medição do CWI de Bond também mede uma estimativa da energia de fratura das partículas de amostras de rochas e minérios. Esta medida só pode ser considerada uma estimativa da energia de fratura se, durante o ensaio, o material não é danificado. Em função do procedimento do ensaio de CWI, é possível que as partículas sejam danificadas por impactos sucessivos dos martelos em energias de impacto crescentes. Se houver danificação, a estimativa da energia de fratura será menor do que a energia de fratura real do material. Caso contrário a energia de fratura medida corresponde a energia de fratura mais a energia equivalente a um incremento de 5º do ângulo de impacto. Neste trabalho uma metodologia foi desenvolvida especificamente para avaliar a danificação de partículas de rochas durante o ensaio de CWI. Quatro amostras distintas de rochas/minérios foram testadas. Os resultados mostram que há uma tendência consistente indicando que a danificação ocorre, porém, se de fato as partículas danificam, a magnitude da redução da energia de fratura é baixa ou incipiente.

Estudos recentes sugerem que a produção de nanocompósitos de MgH2 com nanomateriais de morfologia 1D baseados em TiO2 produzidos via moagem reativa promovem aumento significativo na cinética de absorção-dessorção de hidrogênio deste material, o que favoreceria sua aplicação em tecnologias de armazenamento de hidrogênio em estado sólido. A proposta deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da energia de moagem na integridade das nanopartículas e seu desdobramento nas cinéticas de sorção do material. Para tal, amostras de MgH2 com 5%p. de nanobastões de TiO2 (NR-550) foram produzidas em moinho de bolas planetário a 100, 200 e 300 rpm, respectivamente. Difração de Raios X (DRX) foi utilizada para caracterizar a estrutura cristalina e Microscopia Eletrônica de Transmissão (MET) associada com EDS para analisar o tamanho e morfologia dos catalisadores em meio ao hidreto. Os resultados até o momento indicam que o processo de moagem a 100 rpm não ocasionou variação significativa na distribuição de tamanho e razão de aspecto comparado ao aditivo puro (com valor médio de 35 nm e 2,70 respectivamente). Ensaios de cinética de sorção de hidrogênio ainda estão em andamento.

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a síntese de materiais híbridos nanoestruturados à partir da funcionalização do argilomineral haloisita com (3-aminopropil)trietoxissilano (APTES) para aplicação em processos de adsorção. A rota de modificação baseou-se na acidificação e posterior reação química entre as hidroxilas superficiais da haloisita e os grupos hidrolisáveis de APTES na presença de tolueno sob refluxo. Haloisita em sua forma natural e modificada foi caracterizada por análise termogravimétrica (TG), área superficial específica (BET), espectroscopia de infravermelho (FTIR) e difração de raios X (DRX). A quantidade de APTES enxertado, calculado através da análise termogravimétrica foi de 7,32% para a amostra funcionalizada previamente acidificada e 6,50% para a amostra funcionalizada sem pré tratamento ácido. A área superficial das amostras diminuiu com a funcionalização. As amostras funcionalizadas exibiram novas bandas características de grupos de APTES no espectro obtido por FTIR confirmando a ocorrência da funcionalização do organosilano na haloisita. A análise de DRX indicou que a estrutura original não foi alterada após a funcionalização.

A crescente preocupação em relação às áreas de proteção ambiental e ao alto consumo de argila, matéria-prima da cerâmica vermelha, ocasiona a indisponibilização progressiva de reservas de argilas no Brasil. Com isso, vê-se a necessidade de incorporar resíduos na massa argilosa para confecção de produtos de cerâmica vermelha. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha brasileira consome cerca de 10 milhões de toneladas de argila ao mês para produção de telhas e blocos. Na própria olaria são gerados resíduos, tal como, o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua originado na etapa de conformação das peças. Este trabalho visa incorporar o resíduo de massa cerâmica crua na massa argilosa usada em cerâmica vermelha. O resíduo foi caracterizado por meio de ensaios de FRX, DRX, limites de Atterberg e distribuição de tamanho de partículas. Corpos de prova feitos com massa argilosa e resíduo em teores variando de 10% a 90% (massa) foram conformados, secos à 110ºC, queimados à 900ºC em forno industrial e submetidos a ensaios de absorção de água, porosidade aparente, massa específica aparente e resistência à compressão. Os resultados evidenciaram que as propriedades cerâmicas avaliadas nos corpos de prova da massa argilosa incorporada com o resíduo atendem aos valores das argilas-padrão brasileiras para cerâmica vermelha.

Neste estudo, a influência do tipo de argila como nucleante heterogêneo para o PP foi avaliada. As argilas organofílicas MPH e MPTH, provenientes do Laboratório de físico-química da UAMG/UFCG, e C20A da Southern Clay Products, em teor de 1% em massa, foram misturadas com o polipropileno (PP) compatibilizado com 15% em massa de polipropileno enxertado com anidrido maleico (PP-g-MA), em misturador interno do reômetro de torque Haake visando a obtenção de concentrados que posteriormente foram diluídos com o PP em extrusora. As amostras preparadas foram caracterizadas por medidas de calorimetria exploratória diferencial (DSC) e difratometria de raios-X (DRX). Os resultados obtidos mostraram que embora as três argilas tenham atuado como agente nucleante para o PP a MPH foi a mais eficiente.

The introduction of this size and type of piling rig is intended to address a multipurpose foundation activity. The 8000 denotes the size of equipment that is attached to the mast, namely 8000 Kg. Larger equipment can be carried subject to adjustment of rig geometry. The 8000 series rig will easily accept hydraulic piling hammers and CFA equipment, but for the purpose of this discussion it will be equipped with an auxiliary power pack that is matched to twin vibrators. The design of the siamesed vibrators allows long tube equipment or piles to be driven with a short mast configuration that provides a lower overturning risk. It is easily adapted within minutes to carry out other foundation requirements that are required on the same contract. During the past few years great progress has been made in the United States toward safer, more efficient, and more economical tunneling methods. This advance is partly due, no doubt, to the recent increase in the number of tunnels and adits driven for devel- oping and draining mines and transporting ore. The Bureau of Mines during 1911 and 1912 made a special examination of this phase of mining operations, in connection with an investigation of mining methods and means for preventing accidents. The details especially studied were the provisions for the safety of employees, the kinds of equipment, the methods of driving, and the costs of con- struction. The results and conclusions obtained from that investi- gation are discussed and summarized in this bulletin. Up-to-date information concerning tunneling methods is difficult to obtain. There are few books on the subject; and much of the material they contain, although interesting and of value historically, is now obsolete. The engineering periodicals, it is true, endeavor to keep abreast of the times, and several in nearly every issue present some article bearing upon tunnel work. But the very multiplicity of these articles prevents one from reading them all, and the foreman or superintendent in charge of a tunnel, or the mining engineer designing one, and especially the business man financing the project, has no time for a lengthy search after scattered articles in order to determine the present status of tunnel work. Then, too, knowledge of new methods travels slowly. Valuable inventions and improve- ments in tunneling as well as in all the other industries frequently remain in the notebook of the investigator, or as theses are buried in university libraries, or are published only in journals of small scien- tific societies. New tunneling methods and equipment that are prov- ing safe, efficient, and economical may be totally unknown outside the district in which they originate. This paper, based on a special examination both in the field and in engineering literature, is in- tended to supply data concerning modern and recent tunneling practice in the United States, and to make suggestions that, it is hoped, will result in a saving to the mining industry of energy, capital, and life.
