The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.

The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using Sewage sludge as starting material. The ACs were pyrolyzed in an inert atmosphere at 550 °C after independent chemical treatment with ZnCl2 or KOH with ratio of 1:1. The materials were used as adsorbents for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized using adsorption/desorption nitrogen isotherm, SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results showed that copper removal could be linked to surface pH and compounds present on the surface of adsorbent. KOH-treated adsorbent has smaller surface area (186 m2 g-1) than ZnCl2-treated adsorbent (192 m2 g-1), however, KOH-treated adsorbent exhibited higher removal of Cu(II). The performance of KOH-treated adsorbent could be attributed to the presence of basic groups on the adsorbent surface. Liu isotherm model gave the best description of the equilibrium data. From the Liu isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities at 298 K for KOH-treated, ZnCl2-treated and sewage sludge (without inorganic activation) adsorbents are 31.85, 19.79 and 3.513 mg g-1, respectively. The best desorption experiment was obtained using 1.50 mol L-1 of HNO3 as eluent. Recoveries of Cu(II) from Cu(II)-loaded adsorbents are 98.9% (ZnCl2-treated) and 95.5% (KOH-treated.

As ligas com memória de forma (LMFs) destacam-se por apresentar propriedades especiais, possibilitando seu emprego em diversas aplicações tecnológicas. Esses materiais podem ser integrados a uma matriz polimérica, agindo como um reforço, constituindo uma nova classe de matérias, chamada de Compósitos Inteligentes, que têm despertado interesse por sua versatilidade na criação de atuadores e/ou sensores. Nesse contexto, fios de nitinol, foram tratados termicamente para obter temperaturas de transformação próximas a ambiente. Em seguida, amostras desse material foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para verificação das temperaturas de transformação. Posteriormente, os fios tratados receberam um treinamento termomecânico para obtenção do efeito memória de forma reversível e assim executar o movimento similar a abertura e ao fechamento de uma garra, pretendido para o atuador a ser desenvolvido. Após essa etapa, os fios já treinados foram incorporados a matriz constituída por silicone e resina epóxi, dando origem a um compósito que ao ser ativado por uma corrente elétrica, reproduz o movimento do treinamento termomecânico dado aos fios. Esta pesquisa tem por finalidade, desenvolver um atuador constituído por um compósito inteligente, analisando características como: transformação martensítica e flexibilidade.

The most energy-intensive process in the mining industry is particle size reduction – comminution. The first phase of this process is blasting to fragment the rock from the initial Boussinesq’s halfspace size. Scientific literature demonstrates that the output of a blast in terms of fragment size distribution can be manipulated by varying the specific charge (powder factor) and charge distribution. This study focuses on the influence of blasting on the internal resistance of the blasted fragments; in particular the influence of the spatial distribution of charges. Small-scale blasts were performed on 14 marble blocks using different powder factors and charge distributions. Three control blocks were fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. The results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution. Opportunities for adjusting charge diameter and distribution in opencast blasts to improve the performancet of comminution circuits are discussed.

Sistemas de moagem são projetados baseando-se, entre outros parâmetros, no consumo de energia das rotas existentes. Consideram-se custos com energia um desafio para a indústria mineral, pois a maioria da energia disponível ao processo é inevitavelmente absorvida pelos equipamentos e somente uma menor porção é destinada à fragmentação desejada. Hoje, a maioria das teorias utilizadas na avaliação do desempenho energético parte dos estudos de pesquisadores como Fred Chester Bond. De acordo com Bond, Work Index (WI) é um parâmetro representativo da resistência à moagem do minério, servindo para medir o consumo de energia na fragmentação e para comparar o comportamento de diferentes minérios. Estudos recentes comprovam que o WI de materiais em mistura pode ser medido, geralmente, com alto desvio devido às diferenças existentes de moabilidade de cada tipologia. Este trabalho consistiu na determinação do WI de minério de zinco silicatado com elevações nos teores de esfalerita (ZnS) e galena (PbS), devido à avanços na lavra, minério composto unicamente por willemita e suas misturas. Valores encontrados mostraram que a presença significativa de minerais de classes distintas daquele predominante na frente de lavra pode influenciar na determinação de parâmetros importantes para o processamento mineral. Protection against fire is a greater problem at a coal mine, than at an ordinary industrial plant. Generally mines are located in isolated districts and do not have the protection of city fire departments; consequently fire fighting aquipment must be installed by the mining company. Fire protection around a mine is just as essential as it is in the city.. and undoubtedly is more important if the fire should be underground where many lives would be endangered and all means of escape cut off. A surface fire can generally be attacked from any angle, but an underground fire can be attacked only as conditions will permit.. U. S. Bureau of Mines engineers have investigated many serious mine fires that undoubtedly could have been extinguished in incipiency if a fire extinguisher or fire hose and water had been readily available. In past years very little attention was given..to fire fighting equipment and organization around mines, but in recent years three gen a derde hange of opinion among many of those engaged in mining, and nearly all up-to-date mining companies now have some kind of fire protection about their mine Probably the first company in Illinois to install regular fire fighting equipment and effect a fire fighting organization at its mines, was the Madison Coal Corporation, which operates several mines in Illinois. The main office of this company is in Chicago and the general field office is at Glen Carbon, Ill.

O Alto-Forno 3 da Usiminas iniciou sua atual campanha em 1999. Projetada para durar 15 anos de operação, previa-se uma produção de 41 Mt de gusa. A partir de 2008, iniciaram as avarias mais significativas no sistema de refrigeração, possibilitando a entrada de água e os consequentes distúrbios operacionais. Buscando estender a atual campanha até 2021, a Usiminas realizou, dentre outras atividades de preservação, duas trocas de staves, em 2015 e 2018. Neste trabalho, são apresentados o planejamento e os principais procedimentos relacionados à parada operacional do alto-forno para a segunda troca de staves, com foco nas atividades operacionais que permitiram a redução do nível da carga até 25,1 metros em relação ao stock line. Destacam-se os cuidados e o êxito no abaixamento de carga até o nível das ventaneiras e a metodologia de troca de staves adotada. Por fim, a previsão de extensão da campanha em 7 anos, possibilitará atingir uma produção acumulada de 53,5 Mt, superando em 12,5 Mt o valor projetado.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration (nitrogen, air, and oxygen) on ball wear was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. Marked ball grinding tests and electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen toward wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small, and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

From a start in 1957, milling 3,000 TPD of copper ore, the Cyprus Pima Mining Company, which is located 20 miles south of Tucson, has expanded its operations four times, and is currently treating over 55,000 TPD of ore.1 The most recent expansion added a 14,000 TPD semi-autogenous concentrator to the operation. Shortly after startup in January, 1972, the semi -autogenous plant exceeded the designed tonnage rate.2 Ore from the mine is delivered to a 54 inch gyratory crusher and is reduced to a minus 8 inch product. From the crusher the ore is stacked on a surge pile and then reclaimed and fed to the two parallel grinding circuits. A 28 ft. diameter by 12 ft. long semi-autogenous mill and a 16.5 ft. diameter by 19 ft. long ball mill make up each grinding circuit. The semi-autogenous mills are in closed circuit with screens and the ball mill circuits are closed with hydro- cyclones. Rougher flotation follows the grinding operation. Concentrate regrinding and cleaner flotation is performed in Mill I, the older mill. The generalized flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.

A mixed-use development comprising of multistoried residential towers, retail and associated infrastructure covering an area of 500,000 m2 is under construction in Dubai. The subsoil conditions consist of calcareous sands with high carbonate and shell content with hard and competent strata encountered at varying depths. To achieve the design requirements of soil stiffness, friction angle, limit differential and total settlements and mitigate the liquefaction due to a seismic event then ground improvement were deemed necessary. In order to provide the most time and cost efficient solution numerous techniques were applied to meet the requirements for all depths such as Vibrocompaction, VC (depth >8m), Dynamic Compaction, DC (depth < 8m)] and Rapid Impact Compaction, RIC (depth <4m). The specified ground improvement requirements were translated into a target Cone Penetration Test, CPT line that served as the defacto performance requirements for the project. Suitable correction factors were applied to the CPT results to account for the high carbonate content following the works of Al-Homoud and Wehr 2006, Belotti and Jamiolkowski , 1991 and Vesic, 1965. Furthermore, the alpha factor, α, used to obtain stiffness from CPT results was applied following A.C. Meigh 1987 and Massarsch & Fellenius, 2005 where high over consolidation ratios (OCR) could be demonstrated.

Traditional practice to resist large lateral loads on foundations is the use of large diameter caissons, battered driven piles, or battered micropiles. Dense urban construction environments, however, limit the usefulness of these systems due to the close proximity of below- and above-grade obstructions. This paper presents two micropile construction projects in the United States where a complex scheme of battered micropiles and grade beams was developed to counteract large lateral loads at the foundation level. The paper also presents a procedure used to design vertical micropiles for large lateral loads, which can greatly simplify the design of foundations subject to significant lateral loads in urban environments. A design example shows a case where vertical micropiles were used to support allowable design lateral loads greater than 80 kip per micropile.

Não existe na literatura formal uma descrição dos ensaios de caracterização necessários para a correta determinação de parâmetros de balanço populacional para escalonamento pelo método de Austin. As rotinas envolvidas são normalmente aprendidas em Universidades e Centros de Pesquisa que contam com engenheiros e/ou pesquisadores especificamente treinados para estes experimentos. Isso faz com que estes sistemas modernos sejam pouco utilizados na engenharia e restringe sua aplicação. Este artigo tem por objetivo estabelecer os procedimentos envolvidos na caracterização de processos de moagem e fomentar a utilização de técnicas modernas de escalonamento de moinhos de bolas nas empresas.

Neste trabalho, foram obtidos compósitos poliméricos de Óxido de Grafite (GO) incorporado em Poli(metaclilato de metila) (PMMA). A obtenção do Óxido de Grafite foi realizada pelo método de Hummers modificado. Em seguida foi ainda adicionada uma etapa secundária de tratamento térmico à 1000ºC no GO obtido a fim de expandir as lamelas de grafite e remover os grupos funcionais aderidos durante o ataque ácido do grafite. As cargas obtidas foram caracterizadas com o auxílio das técnicas de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), constatando a expansão das folhas após o tratamento térmico. O estudo comparativo dos compósitos de matriz polimérica com 3 % de concentração de GO antes e após o tratamento térmico foi realizado com o objetivo de entender a contribuição nas propriedades reológicas do polímero com a adição da carga de GO. Os resultados reológicos apresentaram um aumento da viscosidade complexa tanto no ensaio de Varredura de Tempo, quanto no Cisalhamento Oscilatório de Pequenas Amplitudes (COPA).

Aços inoxidáveis austeníticos fundidos por centrifugação, da classe HP, são comumente utilizados na indústria de óleo e gás para a fabricação de tubos usados em fornos de reforma e pirólise. Essas ligas possuem uma elevada resistência à oxidação, elevada estabilidade térmica e elevada resistência à fluência em altas temperaturas, sendo esses requisitos necessários para aplicação nos fornos. Mudanças microestruturais, conhecidas como envelhecimento, podem ocorrer durante a operação, influenciado na resistência à fluência. Desta forma, a caracterização dos estados de envelhecimento de uma liga HP torna-se necessária para avaliar a sua vida remanescente. O objetivo deste estudo é caracterizar duas condições microestruturais de uma liga HP com a microscopia eletrônica de varredura e o ensaio não destrutivo de ultrassom. O processamento do sinal ultrassônico, utilizando a Transformada Rápida de Fourier (Fast Fourier Transform – FFT), foi realizado sobre o segundo eco de fundo do sinal ultrassônico, permitindo correlacionar a análise espectral do sinal com a microestrutura do aço HP. De acordo com a metodologia proposta, os dois estados de envelhecimento foram caracterizados através do processamento do sinal ultrassônico.

"In 2001, a pile trial site was established at Limelette in Belgium consisting of 25 displacement screw piles and 5 driven pre-cast piles. Interested parties were invited to participate in a pile prediction event, whereby they would submit predicted static load test behaviour in the form of load settlement plots. These predictions could be based on soil investigation results supplied by the organizers, or dynamic load test measurements.Following the submission deadline, the organisers released the results of static load tests for comparison.Of all the six participants, including Statnamic, the SIMBAT method was independently accredited with achieving the best predictions.This paper examines at the differences between SIMBAT and other systems, and presents the correlations from the Limelette trial.INTRODUCTIONThe Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) initiated an ambitious research programme involving the construction and testing of some 60 trial piles spread between two sites, a clay site at Sint Kateline Waver and a sandy site at the BBRI headquarters at Limelette. The project was financed largely by the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs. (ref 1.) This paper refers only to the second site.At Limelette, six different types of displacement pile were installed: one driven pre-cast and five cast in place screw piles - Atlas, DeWaal, Fundex, Olivier and Omega. The copper content in the waste slag represents the greatest loss in the process of Caraíba Metais&apos; Smelter. By identifying the variables responsible for copper stabilization in the slag, a minimization on these losses is expected, producing a granulated waste slag with a copper content lower than 0.7%. Statistics resourses such as control charts, Pareto&apos;s diagram and correlations curves were applied for the data obtained in the first semester of 1992. The magnetite and the calcium oxide contents in the slag of the Flash Smelter Furnace were most prominent variables. Some operational changes introduced during and after this investigation have shown good results.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. The objective of this study was to subject two Alaska low-rank coals to hydrothermal drying to enhance their marketability in the Pacific Rim markets and to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the dried products as a function of process conditions. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield have a heating value of approximately 18.5 MJ/kg and contain about 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275° to 325° C) of lump coal, from the Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield, enhanced the heating value of the material, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 18.5 MJ/kg to nearly 27.8 MJ/kg. The product coal, with a high heating value and only 0.2% S, is an environmentally-acceptable premium fuel; additionally, with the Hardgrove grindability index of the coal greatly improved, its value is even further enhanced. An increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Also, ulminite reflectance increased to 0.92%, and ulminite was subjected to widespread vesiculation; this resulted in a coke-like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

The Coeur dÆAlene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. The Proterozoic Revett Formation hosts most of the mesothermal Ag-Pb-Zn vein ore in the district; it consists of informally designated lower, middle, and upper members. All three members show up to an order of magnitude of southward thickening across the regionally significant Osburn fault. Changes in thickness of the Revett Formation across the Osburn fault reflect a major, down-to-the-south, crustal-scale fault that:was active during sedimentation, was periodically reactivated during the structural and metallogenic history of the district, and likely provided first-order control over regional fluid flow during mineralization events. Where vein structures intersect favourable strata, they produce rich ore; where vein structures cross unfavourable strata, they are poorly mineralised or barren. The most favourable host rock in the district is quartzite, which accounts for the large production from the quartzite-rich Revett Formation.The district has five main types of hydrothermal alteration:feldspar destruction, hydrothermal bleaching, carbonatisation, sulfidation, and silicification. Feldspar destruction is the most extensive and pervasive type of alteration, involving the district-wide absence of feldspar from Belt Supergroup rocks. Hydrothermal bleaching results from the destruction of hematite; it forms alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around many of the mineralised veins. Siderite alteration is most diagnostic of mineralisation, forming alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around all mineralised veins. Fine-grained arsenopyrite and/or fine-grained pyrite commonly form alteration zones adjacent to high-grade ore shoots that extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Widespread silicification is most easily recognised by the presence of numerous quartz veins.
