"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal. "Since the beginning of the petroleum industry in 1839, up to within two or three years ago, these has been a dearch of engineers who have had the fundamental technical training also sufficient practical experience so that they could compete with practical men. Need for Technical Investigations in Industry: As in the early stages of the mining industry, the petroleum industry has been rather slow in realizing the need for technical assistance and investigators in the development and production of oil lands. The rapid increase in consumption, however, during the past few years has accentuated this need more than anything else could have done. When it is realized that our production cannot longer keep pace with the demand, it is easily understood why it is imperative that be instituted which will tend to conserve and prolong the supply of oil from the fields now known. It is interesting to note from preliminary production figure given cut by the U. S. Geological Survey, for the year 1919, that the United States produced about 430,000,000 barrels, an increase of 22,000,000 or 6 per cent over 1918 production and also there was imported, chiefly from Mexico, a little over 52,000,000 barrels, making a total of 430,000,000 barrels, to satisfy the trade demand in the United States of which almost 6,000,000 barrels was exported. Stocks were not materially increased.Other significant facts regarding our petroleum industry, are that just recently the U. S. Shipping Board in soliciting bids for 24,000,000 barrels of fad oil to meet prospective needs, received bids for only 1,500,000 barrels at prizes ranging from 75 to 90 per cent higher than was paid last year. One large company on the Pacific Coast has stopped its export trade, and has notified consumers,of gas-engine distillate that they will no longer make deliveries of this product. This will materially affect the farmer, in many instances, through his use of the truck and tractor."

"The semi-pilot scale plant for injection smelting of zinc calcine was operated under the committee of Joint Research Organization of Injection Metallurgy. The capacity of the plant is 10 ton metallic zinc per day. The plant was designed by the resul ts of basic and bench scale tests of the capacity of 1 ton metallic zinc per day which was published at ""Zinc '85"". The equipments of the plants, operational conditions, results of the operation such as recovery of zinc in injection furnace and condenser, combustion rate of powdered coke and consumption of energy in this process are presented in this paper. The results of the study of the feasibility of the commercial plant of 100,000 ton zinc per year by the injection smelting are also discussed in the paper. IntroductionThe research committee of new smelting process of zinc by injection was established in 1981 under the finantial support of Mining Promoting Foundation of Japan. Six zinc producing companies joined in this organization. The price of zinc was very low at that time and the energy cost, especially, cost of electric power in Japan was extremely high. Invention of a new economical process for zinc extraction had been stronglydesired. The author proposed a injection smelting of zinc as a economical process in energy saving after a calculation of thermodynamical equilibrium and heat balance(1 )(2).The research committee has been studying the injection process since 1981. The small basic experiment by using a crucible furnace was carried out from October 1981 to March 1983 and the reaction of reduction of calcine by injection smelting was ascertained (2). Vaporizatipon of zinc and behaviours of impurities were examined. After the basic experiment, the bench scale test with the production capacity of zinc of 1 ton per day was carried on from November 1983 to October 1984.The bench scale tests were carried out to obtain the proper design of feeding devices of calcines and coke into a furnace and also to obtain fundamental data for enlargement of this smelting process(3,4). The recovery of metallic zinc in this small equipments was about 50% and main loss of zinc was formation of dross in the condenser."

The stability of foams and froth plays an important role in flotation, in which small amounts of relatively weak non-ionic surfactants (frothers) are used to produce air bubbles and foams. In the present work, factors affecting the stability of the foams produced in the presence of common frothers, such as n-pentanol, n-octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG), have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Schelud-ko-Exerowa type to measure the equilibrium film thicknesses. The results were used to determine the contributions from the various surface forces to the disjoining pressures in the thin lamellae (foam) films formed between air bubbles. In addition, we used a model developed by Wang and Yoon (Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochem. Eng. Aspects, 2006) to calculate the elasticities of the lamellae films at the critical thicknesses at which films rupture. The surface forces and elasticity da-ta were then compared with the foam stabilities in the presence of the various flotation frothers. It was found that foam stabilities are controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces, the relative contributions of which change with frother type and concentration. In general, surface forces play a more important role at relatively low frother concentrations, while elasticity plays a more important role at higher concentrations. At the frother additions usually employed in the mining industry, MIBC relies on surface forces while PPG-400 relies on film elasticity in producing stable foams. The former is capable of dampening the hydrophobic force, which is a major attractive force destabilizing lamellae films, while the latter is capable of reducing surface tensions at low concentrations.

During the electrorefining of lead by the Betts process, ionic concentration gradients become established within the slimes layer. These gradients contribute to precipitation of secondary products and to gradients in electrode potential applied to slimes filaments, and thereby affect the dissolution of noble impurities. This paper describes the experimental results obtained when a typical lead anode was dissolved under galvanostatic conditions with concurrent interruption of current at preset slimes thicknesses. Reference electrodes were incorporated within the lead anode to follow the potential gradients across the slimes electrolyte. Samples of the slimes electrolyte were withdrawn in-situ and their compositional changes were related to transport processes across the slimes layer. Upon current interruption the anodic overpotential decays, first abruptly (as the uncompensated ohmic drop disappears), and then slowly (due to the presence of a back E.M.F. created by ionic concentration gradients that decay slowly). Current interruption measurements showed that: (A) concentration gradients exist across the slimes layer, (B) inner solution potentials within the slimes layer can be larger than those measured from reference electrodes located in the bulk electrolyte, (C) secondary products can shift the inner solution potential to negative values that reverse upon re-dissolution and (D) ionic diffusion is seen upon current interruption but it is complex and difficult to model due to the presence of processes that can support the passage of internal currents. SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis of the slimes filaments indicated that secondary reactions leading to the formation of Si02 and PbF2 take place (mainly at the anodelslimes interface). The onset of these reactions and their relationship to the Pb-F-Si-H20 Eh-pH diagram are linked to the industrial operation of the Betts process.

El presente trabajo describe la importancia de la explotación de la industria carbonera en el Perú a través de una revisión histórica donde se indica el interés de instituciones privadas y el Estado para el desarrollo del mineral, así como las posibles alternativas de solución y difusión para su consumo. Si bien las principales reservas de carbón se encuentran en La Libertad y Ancash, los esfuerzos por aumentar su difusión datan desde el siglo pasado, sin lograr un mayor desarrollo. A esto se suma el crecimiento de la importación del petróleo y el escaso empleo del mineral en los yacimientos mineros. Por tal motivo, se plantea que el consumo del carbón en la industria minera, se realice en aquellos centros mineros que tengan necesidad del uso de combustibles, reemplazando el consumo del petróleo. Asimismo, que estos puedan ser utilizados en el uso de energía por medio de las centrales hidroeléctricas, dado que su alto contenido de cenizas pemite el aprovechamiento de los desechos de las canchas.

The existing US-70 Bridge over the Gila River at Bylas, Arizona is planned to be replaced due to its current poor condition. The replacement bridge is planned to be a 15-span, 1,904-foot (580 meter) long bridge, the third-longest bridge in the state highway system. Within the Gila River floodplain, granular alluvial soil is underlain by cohesive lacustrine soil; bedrock was expected due to nearby terrain but not encountered within the geotechnical exploration depth of 166.5 feet (51 meters) or less. Based on the anticipated loading conditions, design scour depths and the soil conditions, the full structural loads are carried by large diameter drilled shafts; therefore accurately determining the axial capacity of the proposed drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The conventional methods for axial capacity determination may be overly conservative to use for design in the site’s layered granular and hard clay soils. An Osterberg cell load test was performed to obtain detailed information on the load transfer from the drilled shaft in side friction and base resistance to allow optimization of the bridge foundation design. The fullscale field test played a significant role in the design of the project’s deep foundations, notably, by incorporating the specific subsoil properties and consequently, an exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading. This paper provides the results of the geotechnical site investigations, drilled shaft load testing procedures, and shaft load distribution from the load test results. Comparisons were developed between predicted axial capacities of drilled shafts using several design methodologies and the axial capacity measured from static load testing. The load test results showed that underestimation of the axial capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The exact prediction of the load-settlement behavior under loading combined with a site-specific design approach, resulted in a substantial reduction of foundation costs due to reduced drilled shaft dimensions.

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. "Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. It highlights how—in addition to using the larger crushers now available—maximizing the utilization percentages in each of the four stages of the rock size reduction circuit will assist in meeting the larger production requirements of existing and new mining operations. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year. INTRODUCTION Are larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? Boyd (2002) predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available. The rock size reduction process from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized in four stages: • Stage 1: Mining (rock breakage and fragmentation) • Stage 2: Pre-screening (scalping) • Stage 3: Primary crushing • Stage 4: Fine crushing (secondary, tertiary and quaternary) Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once the project design criteria and the mine plan have been established, the circuit’s utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stakeholders in the selection of the final comminution circuit, and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit. This paper focuses on the four stages of a rock size reduction circuit from the mine to the mill, equipment selection, various ore and waste handling flowsheets, and improvements in crusher station design, all with the purpose of maximizing availability and plant utilization percentages. What is a large tonnage? From 1907 to 1914, the American Panama Canal excavated 300 million tonnes of material in 7 years (History of the Panama Canal, Wikipedia). Today’s large mining operations can move the same material in 10 months, using large crushers or multiple crushers for ore processing and large crushers and a mixture of truck haulage and conveyors for handling the large waste tonnages. This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

An innovative separator known as the HydroFloat cell has been developed specifically for the upgrading of coarse particles that are difficult to recover using conventional flotation cells. The novel characteristic of this separator is the formation of a hindered teeter-bed of fluidised solids into which small air bubbles are injected. The air bubbles selectively attach to hydrophobic particles and form particle/bubble agglomerates that segregate atop the teeter-bed due to their lower apparent specific gravity. The low-density agglomerates are eventually carried into the product overflow launder by the rising current of teeter water. Hydrophilic particles remain in the teeter-bed and are discharged to underflow as a high solids content tailing. Benefits of this hybrid flotation-density separator include enhanced bubble-particle contacting, increased particle residence time, and very low air demand. Test data indicate that significant improvements in the recovery of coarse particles can be achieved using this innovative technology. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the HydroFloat cell and provides an overview of recent pilot-scale tests conducted for the phosphate industry.

"One of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of mineral necessary to the prosecution of the war. Part of that effort was in the form of metallurgical service extended to other government agencies engaged in purchasing and stock piling some of the more critical and strategic materials.Fluorite was one of the materials stock piled by the Metals Reserve Company. The fluorite was usually in the form of coarse metallurgical con¬centrate purchased in the United States and abroad. The material was stock¬piled to insure an adequate reserve of fluorite for the metallurgical industries. The domestic production of metallurgical fluorite containing a minimum effective calcium fluoride content of 55 percent,4/ however, gradually increased until production was at least equal to consumption. The stock-piled metallurgical fluorite, therefore, soon became a surplus commodity.On the other hand, the supply of acid-grade fluorite, containing a minimum of 97.5 percent calcium fluoride and n maximum of 1.5 percent silica,5/ was never entirely adequate. Increased consumption of acid-grade material in the aluminum, petroleum, and chemical industries kept that material on the critical list during the war.Under the circumstances, it was felt that a study of the possibility of producing acid-grade fluorite from the metallurgical stock piles would be of some benefit to the war effort. Consequently, samples of fluorite from several of the Metals Reserve Company stock piles were tested by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the War Production Board.Two groups of samples were submitted for testing. One consisted of metallurgical fluorite purchased from Mexico and stock-piled in the El Paso and Laredo, Texas, stock piles of the Metals Reserve Company. The second group of samples was from the stock piles at Gila, N. Mex.The sample submitted from the El Paso stock pile consisted of about 5,000 pounds of minus 4-inch material. Mineralogically, the sample consisted of fluorite contaminated by calcite, chert, quartz, and small amounts of iron and alumina. Although some of the fluorite was reasonably free from gangue at minus 1-inch, much of it remained locked in sizes as fine as 65-mesh.The Laredo sample was about 5,000 pounds of material from five different piles. The samples from each stock pile, A to E, inclusive, were analyzed separately to determine whether the grade of the material in the piles varied markedly. As there was little difference in the analyses, the samples were combined in proportion to the tonnage represented to make a composite sample for testing. The composite sample consisted of fluorite with small amounts of quartz, calcite, and barite. Most of the fluorite was the dark-colored, opaque variety. A small amount of iron-oxide staining was present, and traces of muscovite, clay, pyrite, and tourmaline were noted. The quartz was present as crystals in vugs, and as finely disseminated grains in the fluorite. The druzy quartz and the calcite were free at minus 10-mesh, but the disseminated grains, some of which were 1 to 15 microns in size, were not entirely free at minus 270-mesh. A petrographic estimate indicated that 65 percent of the silica was locked in the 150- to 200-mesh."

Preliminary results are given of solvent stimulation of two wells producing viscous oil (14°-17° API) from the Tar zone in the Wilmington field, California. The solvent (coker oil, an intermediate refinery product) was injected into the formation, and after a soak period, the well was returned to production. Data are given on crude oil properties, solvent properties, determination of volume of solvent in the produced oil, rate of oil production before and after stimulation, volume of additional oil produced, and volume of solvent recovered. Although further study and improvement of the method arcs needed, cyclic solvent stimulation appears to be an unqualified success in one well and a moderate success in the other.

"Cathodic and anodic reactions in an acidic nitrate medium were studied in reference to the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from pyrolusite' (Mn02) ores by reductive leaching. Two USA ores were investigated. The reductant for the pyrolusite ore is produced cathodically in an electrolytic cell and can either be nitrous acid (HN02) or nitric oxide gas (NO). In this work emphasis was placed on the nitrous acid leach. In a high-temperature leach in a nitrous/nitric acid medium, manganese and silver are solubilized and iron is not. Anodic electrowinning of manganese dioxide from the acidic manganese nitrate electrolyte yields flaky y-Mn02, similar to that produced from sulfate and chloride electrolytes. Cathodic regeneration of nitrorts acid was studied in a membrane cell in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.0 to 0.1 M nitrous acid on a' platinized titanium cathode. At cathode potentials ranging from +950 to +700 mV (SHE), cathodic reduction to nitrous acid takes place, at cathode potentials < +700 mV, cathodic reduction of nitrous acid to nitric oxide takes place. A conceptual process is presented and discussed.IntroductionManganiferous-silver oresLarge reserves of manganiferous-silver ores are present in the Southwestern United States and Latin America. These ores are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment, due to the insolubility of the higher oxides of manganese (Mn 4+) in all common lixiviants such as cyanide solutions, dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, salt solution, thiosulfates, etc. The silver is either bound by the insoluble manganese, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization.Higher oxides of manganese will dissolve if they are first reduced pyrometallurgically to manganous oxide (Mn2+). This is a widely used pretreatment for manganese dioxide ores and subsequent dissolution in sulfuric acid is common. In order to avoid the pyrometallurgical pretreatment with its large energy requirements and gaseous emissions, fully hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed. These processes are based on the presence of a reductant in solution, in order to reduce the insoluble higher oxides of manganese to soluble lower oxides. Aqueous S02 has been proposed and tested on industrial scale by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. After washing, silver could be extracted by cyanidation. The neutralization of the pulp prior to cyanidation however causes problems in filtration and the reagent consumptions are high [1]. More recently, acidified thiourea and bacteria were proposed for the solubilization of both manganese and silver in a single leach step. High extractions were obtained, but drawbacks of these methods are high reagent consumption or slow kinetics [2,3]. For the options of manganese recovery from the leach filtrate, precipitation with persulfate or ammonium carbonate and ion exchange have been proposed. The proposed options for silver reclaim are precipitation with either zinc or Na2S and adsorption onto activated carbon."

This paper presents a numerical investigation of solid separation in jigging device, which is a gravity separation method widely used in ore processing. Separation is recognized as being heavily dependent on fluid motion in the jig. This study explores the effects of the inlet time dependent velocity profile on jigging performance. Modelling of the liquid-solid system is performed through a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate liquid flow and discrete element method (DEM) to resolve particle motion. The initial packing conditions consist of a binary-density particle system of 1130 particles each 1 cm in diameter. A variety of jigging profiles are implemented in jigging. The saw tooth pulsation profile is selected with three variations in both amplitude and frequency. The performance of each profile variant is compared in terms of solid flow patterns, separation kinetics, energy, and mean particle position. These quantitative comparisons demonstrate significant differences in the segregation rate, energy, and solid phenomena, helping find an alternative optimum operating setting for the system.

This presentation covers the results of laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., on alluvial sands from Dismal Swamp, Bear Valley, and Cascade, Idaho. The search for radioactive minerals has led to the reexamination of alluvial deposits; in the process of this reappraisal the frequent presence of minerals bearing columbium and/or tantalum was toted. Because of increased demand for these metals by the defense industries and because these industries depend upon foreign sources for their supply the domestic alluvial black sands are being considered, as a possible domestic source. However, utilization of these alluvial deposits depends upon development of methods of concentrating these valuable minerals. The primary objective of the test work was the study of the effect of attrition scrubbing, sizing, magnetic, electrostatic, and gravity separa¬tion as methods for concentrating and recovering the columbium and tantalum-bearing minerals, samarskite, euxenite, ilmenorutile, and columbite.

This report discusses in detail laboratory and pilot-plant tests conducted from January 1951 until January 1955 at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., on defluorination and recovery of evolved fluorine from phosphate rock. Results of use tests of defluorinated phosphate rock by cooperating agricultural colleges and the United States Department of Agriculture are also included. In 1954 the consumption of fluorspar, the only domestic fluorine-bearing mineral of commercial importance, was approximately 478,000 short tons; 245,000 tons was from domestic mines. The production of marketable phosphate rock in the same period was about 13,800,000 long tons. Of this total amount, approximately 15 percent was produced in the West. From the viewpoint of conservation and utilization of fluorine as a natural resource, it is interesting to note that the total estimated quantity of fluorine in domestically produced phosphate rock is more than double that present in domestically mined fluorspar.

Finalmente, se evalúa la posibilidad de hallar reservas recuperables y por ende, examinar la factibilidad de su recuperación. Asi también, las zonas recuperables son generalmente las más altas, ya que la aplicación de métodós con relleno hidráulico tomado directamente de los relaves de la Planta, debe considerar la diferencia de nivel entre ella y los tajeos re-explotables.
