The Florida Department of Transportation, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is studying the feasibility of a 1128 meter (3,700 foot) vehicular tunnel to provide direct access for Port of Miami traffic to/from I-395, I-95, SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway) and Miami International Airport. Both Bored and Immersed Tube tunnels were evaluated and re-evaluated for constructing two, two-lane, 11.9 meter (39-foot) diameter tunnels beneath the Main Shipping Channel lying between Watson Island and the Port of Miami on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, USA. Bedrock Geology of South Florida is predominately very permeable, vuggy limestone with sand seams and occasional voids. Groundwater inflows in deep cut-and-cover excavations, tunnel buoyancy, grouting, maintenance of Port operations and potential/possible environmental impacts to Biscayne Bay were significant issues.

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. A comparison of microstructures associated with W single-crystal ([001], [011], [111]) rods prior to deformation (as grown), and after quasi-static compression (at a strain rate of ~1/s) by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows several orders of magnitude difference in dislocation density. Dislocation substructures were not significantly different amongst the deformed sample orientations. In contrast, [001] W rods penetrated into steel targets, at impact velocities of ~1.3 km/s, exhibited heavy dislocation densities and dynamic recrystallization as very distinct microstructural regimes accommodating the penetration process. Twinning on {112} also occurred as a precursor to, or remnant of, these microstructures near the projectile head. These results suggest that deformation accommodating the extreme strains and strain rates associated with the penetration of a single-crystal rod into a metal target is not adequately represented by conventional deformation

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

"Bubbles are unquestionably the heart of the flotation process. Their size and combined surface area are largely what drive the recovery process. This suggests that plant engineers should be aware of where their plants are operating with respect to what is achievable for these key parameters. The paper presents a model of how the key operating variables of frother type and concentration, gas rate, altitude (above sea level) and viscosity affect the Sauter mean bubble size (D32) and bubble surface area flux (Sb). The results are compared to a set of plant measurements that demonstrate the benchmarking capability of the approach. A case study is used to link hydrodynamic change to improved metallurgical performance.INTRODUCTION At the beginning of the 20th Century the early practitioners of flotation were aware of the importance of understanding bubble behaviour (Rickard, 1916) but measurement of individual bubble and gas behaviour in the industrial environment was not possible due to a lack of adequate sensors. This situation was not rectified until three quarters of a century later with the advent of industrially-robust sensors developed, notably, at the University of Queensland’s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) (Schwarz & Alexander, 2006) and McGill University (Gomez & Finch, 2002). What emerged was not the chaotic environment perhaps expected, but defined relationships between gas rate, gas holdup, bubble size and the total surface area of bubbles. These relationships could be defined by mathematical expressions and predicted from an understanding of the key process variables (Gorain, Franzidis & Manlapig, 1997; 1999) (Hernandez-Aguilar, Gomez & Finch, 2002) (Gomez, Cortes-Lopez & Finch, 2003) (Nesset, Gomez & Finch, 2007). The early JKMRC work focused on a large pilot cell (3 m3) installed in plant environments, while the McGill work was initiated on flotation columns (Finch & Dobby, 1990) (Xu, Finch & Uribe-Sales, 1991) and later adapted to industrial mechanical cells (Cooper, Scott, Dahlke, Finch & Gomez, 2004) (Dahlke, Gomez & Finch, 2005) (Nesset, Gomez, Finch, Hernandez-Aguilar & Difeo, 2005). Yianatos of Santa Maria University (Chile), a graduate of the McGill research team, carried the work to industrial settings in South and Central America (Yianatos, Bergh, Condori & Aguilera, 2001). The methods of gas dispersion measurement are now well accepted and most major research centres and flotation cell manufacturers have adopted the technology (Pyecha, Sim, Lacouture, Hope & Stradling, 2006) (Yañez et al., 2009) (Collins, Schwarz & Alexander, 2009)."

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...

Basic parameters affecting the stability of foams have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Scheludko and Exerowa (1959) to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, MIBC, and PPG. The results were compared with the froth stabilities measured using the shake tests and the film elasticity calculated using the model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that the froth stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother concentration and type.

The decisive action taken by mine managements in recent years has been the main factor in bringing about the present downward trend in mine fires. A better understanding of the fundamental factors that govern the ignition and spread of fires. obtained as a result of investigations into mine fires, has provided useful guidance to production personnel. Similar investigations into fire-fighting techniques have assisted the Rescue Training Service and mines to institute more effective fire-fighting techniques. Some of the more important findings of recent investigations in these areas are outlined.

One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

In choosing such a threadbare subject for a paper I fear that I may in some measure be taxing your patience, yet as upon the accuracy with which the work is done depends the result of conclusions drawn as to whether a property will be profitable to work or otherwise. The subject cannot be too well threshed out, and I trust that upon certain points that have come within my own experience I may be able to give 'hints that will prevent others from making mistakes. First as to alluvial. Gold is often found from the grass roots down, often ill particular horizontal bands in the wash, but more generally concentrated either on a true or false bottom. When sampling dry ground for proposed hydraulicing I have obtained accurate results only by taking the whole of the dirt from measured shafts, stacking it as it was lifted on a tarpaulin, and putting the whole quantity through a carefully constructed box. In wet ground careful borings will in most cases give fairly correct results, but where it is possible to sink shafts, that should be done, as a guide is then also obtained as to the nature of the wash, whether it is bouldery, cemented, or free. Sampling in a face is a more difficult work in many respects than in new ground, as so many elements enter into action to spoil accurate sampling. Of course the great thing to avoid is sampling in any place where either natural or artificial concentration has taken place, and very much has to be left to circumstance and the sampler's own judgment. In passing I may mention that I have on several occasions seen diggers deceive themselves in wet ground where they were sinking and coping as best they might with water. They would take a dish of dirt from the bottom of their hole, pan it off, and take the result as a fair yield, and on the strength of it perhaps spend a lot of time and money in tail races and whereas in their sample there had been a process of concentration carried on, the movement and working in the water had caused the gold to work down, and anything like accurate estimations by the method pursued were out of the question.

They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau bas become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

Sustaining the region?s mobility needs, achieving projected economic growth, and maintain Midtown Manhattan as a center of regional, national and global importance has led to continued investment in commuter rail and transit infrastructure in New York City and resulted in design and construction of large underground caverns. The current plans for stations in Manhattan include New York Penn Station Expansion (NYPSE) caverns for Trans Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel Project for New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Long Island Railroad (MTACC/LIRR) twin caverns for East Side Access (ESA) Project, and station caverns of the No. 7 Line Subway Extension Project and Second Avenue Subway Project for Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction/New York City Transit (MTACC/NYCT). This paper provides a general overview of these large caverns now in design or construction in Manhattan, the area?s geologic setting, the geotechnical factors considered and approaches commonly applied for cavern design.

Underground stone mining represents an emerging sector for the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, adequate stone pillar design methods will become more important. It is the purpose of this paper to examine current design practices and to discuss issues for safe mine layouts so that a rational first approach towards balancing the demands for increased production can be weighed against increased risk to worker safety from rib instabilities and pillar failures. Seventy-two stone mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width-to- height ratios below 1.5 and subjected to excessive stress levels appear more likely to fail. When width-to- height ratios fall below 1 .0, defects in the pillars, such as through-going discontinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties, and orientation are important factors controlling pillar strength. The influence of discontinuity dip, a characteristic easily identified in the field, was examined so that its presence could be accounted for in developing generalized guidelines for pillar design.

It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. A comparatively new and very promIsmg field for applying cemented tungsten-carbides is in the mining and quarrying industries. The economic advantages of this unique engineering material over the conventional hollow drill steel, or steel detachable bits, have proven so great that the use of "hard metals" promises, in some instances, to revolutionise the drilling of all manner of minerals. Early in the war years the Germans realised the tremendous advantages cemented carbides offered for holing hard rocks, and they proceeded to develop detachable percussion bits to do this work, at the same time evolving fast, comparatively light-hitting driliing machines, especially designed to suit the mechanical properties of the carbide.Here in Australia also, it has appeared that the detachable percussion bit offers the greatest economic benefits to consumers, although the author is well aware that carbide-tipped drill rods have, and may continue to work out satisfactorily in certain mines and quarries.Most drilling equipment at present installed in Australia may be described as being of the heavy hard-hitting variety, so that the designer of an efficient percussion bit has to take special precautions to overcome the problem of fatigue, and to ensure that the inserts are securely mounted in the body with the minimum of internal stress in the carbide.

It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. An investigation was male of ground response to pillar retreat mining in a 1.7 meter thick seam at 108 meter depth at a site in northern West Virginia. This paper describes mining-related stress changes and movements at nine level, displacements within the overburden, ground surface subsidence and groundwater level variations. Subsidence approached 40 per cent of the nine height ad continued more than a year after mining. Water levels declined la certain deep-lying strata.

Many caving mines use numerical flow models to simulate mine production, forecast recovered ore grades and optimise the draw strategy. In sublevel caving (SLC) mines, the effects of blasting and fragmentation at an individual ring scale generally cannot be included in these models. Previous attempts to use results from marker recovery trials to calibrate numerical flow models have been limited due to difficulties in accounting for blasting effects at a ring scale. This paper outlines how an empirical criterion for blasting and fragmentation was used to attribute variable flow properties into a numerical flow model based on the blast design and modelled fragmentation. The flow model was then validated using data from a number of full scale marker recovery experiments. The result of this approach was a significant improvement in forecast accuracy when compared against the same modelled cave marker recovery without the inclusion of these blasting effects. Improvements in the flow model are currently being adopted within the mine scale model to further improve the accuracy of grade forecasting, optimise the draw strategy and increase net present value. The integrated modelling approach is also being used to simulate the effects of different drill and blast designs on cave recovery. It is suggested that, if implemented, the technique would lead to improved blast designs in other SLC mines, increase the value of marker trial data and reduce costs associated with large scale blast design trials.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2017. "Basement construction is one of the challenging geotechnical concerns in the urban environment. Several types of retention systems are practiced to support the earth which is suitable for restricted access, rapid mobilization, fast excavation and cost-effective designs. A thorough understanding of geotechnical engineering as well as the structural mechanics is important for the earth retention systems. This paper discusses a project with various types of foundation solutions including monitoring of deflections during excavation stage of a retention system.A multi storeyed residential building (3B+Stilt+18F) in Chennai having structure foot print area of 1500 m2 has to be constructed on large diameter pile foundations and also to support the proposed basement excavation. Ground water table was encountered at about 6m below the existing ground level (EGL). In order to support heavy structural loads, large diameter bored cast-in-situ piles were chosen and installed. Further, complete retention system was economically designed and built, which includes installation of Contiguous Bored Piles (CBP) in combination of vertical grout columns behind CBP wall to seal the gap between the CB Piles, installation of inclined ground anchors, construction of capping beam, stressing and locking of installed ground anchors. A detailed monitoring program was in place and continuous monitoring of wall deflections is being measured at the time of publishing this paper. This paper describes the design and construction aspects adopted for foundation and retention system including the monitoring results during excavation stage of the project.INTRODUCTIONIn general, stage wise open excavation will be opted for basement construction where plenty of space is available. Due to urbanization and restricted space, open excavation became a difficult task nowadays. To overcome this problem, suitable retention system need to be selected to retain the soil mass. Selection of suitable retention system for multi-level basement excavation is a great challenge in geotechnical industry, especially when the proposed site is located within the minimum set back distance from the existing structures. This in turn calls for the advanced and innovative methods of retention system.Several earth retention systems such as Diaphragm Walls, Secant Pile Walls, CBP system, Soldier Pile Walls, Sheet Piles, Deep Soil Mixing (block walls) etc. with or without inclined ground anchors are being practiced worldwide. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of the available retention systems in practice locally and keeping in view of present site conditions, the developer has chosen CBP system with inclined ground anchors so that all foundation related works of the project will be handled in a single package. The main advantage of such packaged solution will ease the coordination between design consultants and foundation contractor resulting in faster construction of foundation works which in turn reflect savings in time and cost."
