Many investigators measured surface forces between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces using atomic force microscope (AFM). Some investigators observed long-range attractions and attributed them to the presence of hydrophobic forces, while others suggested that they are artifacts of the nano-bubbles and cavities associated with the hydrophobic surfaces. Still others suggested that the long-range attractions are due to the electrostatic interactions between charged patches present on opposing surfaces and hence are unrelated to surface hydrophobicity. In the present work, we have measured long-range attractions between gold- (or silver-) coated surfaces hydrophobized in potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions at pH 9.2 under controlled potential conditions. The results of our AFM force measurements are consistent with those of the contact angle and voltammetry experiments, indicating that the long-range attractions are hydrophobic forces.

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

Thermodynamics of Non-Cyanide Gold Solvents The present status of the raw material base in the gold industry requires specific ways to recover gold and silver from ores. Most gold is closely associated with sulfides which require flotation followed by pressure or bacterial oxidation. The next stages of processing usually require using expensive operations for the preparation of leaching. A lot of researchers want to find a new alternative solvent for the extraction of precious metals from these products. According to the authors, one of the best ways is to use sulfur-based solvents (thiosulfate, sulfite, and their various mixtures). Thermodynamics of gold and silver thiosulfate dilution are calculated for conditions: the concentration of Au - 200 mg/L, oxygen - 3.2 mg/L, thiosulfate - 79 mg/L, OH- - 170 mg/L. the general result is the possibility of process remains under standard conditions. (erAu = = 0.035 V, ?G298 = - 29.18 kJ/g-atom ??). Silver with thiosulfate forms two strong complexes: [AgS203]- and [Ag(S203)2]3-. ?G0 = -1027 kJ/mol. The complex [AgS203]- is less stable: ?G0 = 486 kJ/mol. It should be noted that despite the high stability of gold complexes, the sodium thiosulfate may decompose to sulfite and elemental sulfur during the process, especially when heating. Gold is slightly soluble in the sodium sulfite solution, however it forms the strong complex [Au(SO3)2]3-. Depending on the concentration of free S2O32-ions, silver with sodium sulfite forms three complexes: [AgSO3]-, [Ag(SO3)2]3- and [Ag(SO3)3]5-. The dissolution speed of gold in sodium sulfite solution may be in the same range as it is during cyanidation. In this case, a practical application of sulfite process can be also used, especially for the products containing free elemental sulfur. In conclusion, sulfite-thiosulfate gold lixiviants can be used for concentrates after pressure oxidation of the cakes.

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

This study was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine whether the sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans could use sulfur compounds to produce sulfuric acid in sufficient quantities to leach valuable metals from low-grade ores. The results of extended tests indicated that the bacterium is capable of extracting appreciable amounts of copper and cobalt from ore and mineral samples when sulfur is available in a state that can be readily assimilated by the organisms. Under the conditions of these tests, this organism was not able to assimilate and oxidize the sulfur as it occurred in the ores and minerals. Ores containing copper minerals in the silicate, carbonate, and oxide forms, in the presence of elemental sulfur, were more susceptible to bacterial action than ores containing copper minerals in the sulfide form. Thiobacillus thiooxidans remained active on elemental sulfur in the presence of some of the ores which were tested, but could not tolerate others. Therefore, strains of the bacterium were progressively adjusted to increasing concentrations (0.5 to 10 grams) of the individual ores until they could remain active on 10-gram portions of all ores being tested.

Rittinger's and Bond's descriptions of rock crushing relate the energy input required to fracture rock and the surface energy required to form new fractures to the change in specific surface area of feed and product during comminution. The potential applicability of this approach to blasting is illustrated, using the results of data from bench blasting tests on Pinal schists and production blasting of Carboniferous limestones. The approach contributes to understanding of the mechanisms involved in blasting and to the design of test blasts. A modified form is presented of the relationship between blasting energy, specific surface area of the muckpile and a rock energy constant related to the discontinuity structure of the rock. The modified equation fits observed data and offers a simple basis for further experiments

In this paper, the nonlinear finite element analysis is used to study the support system of a tunnel which is designed to pass through deep-embeded stratum. The rock mass is rather intact, though a section of tunnel will pass through the weak belt. Under the influence of the high ground stress, the condition of stability and the form of support become complicate. This paper, talcing into account the nonlinear properties of rock mass and the Interaction between rock, and support, makes a comparison between the two kinds of soft and rigid support systems, and analysed the changes of their bearing forces.

Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: piles near and within embankments, piles near an excavation for a pile cap, and piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

Traditionally, roof falls are usually attributed to bad roof strata and high vertical stress related to the overburden depth. However, roof falls under shallow overburden depth are oflen caused by a high horizontal stress field. Recent studies have proven that the high horizontal stress field, if existing, plays a major role in roof stability. Also the roof conditions are related to the entry diredions under a horizontal stress field. Questions are: How to orient the entry to a favorable direction to prevent the roof falls? If the entry cannot be oriented, how to support it? Through a case study in mine A, this paper analyzes the horizontal stress effect on roof stability. The guideline for the entry orientation is given based on the results of analysis. Additionally, suggestions are made for those entries that cannot be oriented to a favorable direction.

A theoretical analysis is presented for the static and dynamic response of wire rope in deep-shaft mining operations. Expressions for the stresses in the individual wires of complex wire ropes are derived, and specific results for simple strands, 7x7 ropes, 6x 19 Seale ropes both with and without internal-wire-rope cores, and 6x25 filler-wire ropes both with and without internal-wire-rope cores, are presented for the case of ropes subjected to a combination of axial loading and bending over a sheave. Consideration is also given to the dynamic overloading associated with certain mining operations, such as dumping ore into a suspended skip and accelerating a fully loaded skip upward. Experiments to determine the axial stiffness of wire rope are described. Factors affecting the service life of wire rope, such as residual stresses, contact stresses, and fatigue behavior, are discussed. Specific research areas in need of further investigation are identified.

The 1983 Energy Plan calls for an increase in North Island coal production from both underground and opencast sources from the 1982/1983 production of 843 000 tpa to approximately 3.4 Mtpa within the ten year period to March 1993. This increased production is scheduled to come from the following sources: Huntly West No 1 underground mine reaching full production of 1.26 Mtpa. Huntly East underground mine increasing production to 750 000 tpa. The proposed new Huntly West No 2 mine producing 100 000 tpa in its first year of operation û 1992. The proposed Ohinewai opencast producing 920 000 tpa for supply to the steelmaking plant at Glenbrook, replacing Weavers opencast which will be worked out in 1990. Rotowaro opencast producing at 220 000 tpa (currently being achieved). Two additional sources of supply which are not scheduled to begin production for at least ten years, and both of which have been designated for coal fired thermal power generation, are the Maramarua and Mokau coalfields. It was originally envisaged that development of both coalfields would be a combination of underground and opencast mines. The form of development is yet to be confirmed by detailed feasibility studies. The location of the Maramarua, Ohinewai (Waikare Coalfield) and Mokau deposits is shown on Figure 1. Worley Consultants Limited, in conjunction with their partners Rheinbraun Consulting GmbH (Germany) and Longworth McKenzie Pty Limited (Australia) have been involved with investigations and mining assessments for the Maramarua, Mokau and Ohinewai prospects. The Maramarua and Mokau studies form part of the New Zealand Coal Resources Survey programme of updating information to the Pre-Feasibility Mining Assessment level before proceeding to detailed feasibility studies. The Ohinewai study was commissioned directly by Mines Division to investigate the feasibility of mining coal by 1989 before reserves at Weavers opencast are depleted. This paper describes typical studies which are now being commissioned by Mines Division to investigate large-scale mining development and the effect geotechnical-conditions may have on coal recovery. The magnitude of these projects is reflected in the proposed outputs û up to2 Mtpa from individual mines û and the introduction of new continuous mining systems for both underground and opencast mines on a scale which has not previously been contemplated.

A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. The field tests involved ten coal mines in which transients were initiated on the dc system from which the parameters of the dc mine electrical power system could be determined. The data processing involved the use of a Fourier Analyzer to filter noise and fit an exponential curve to the field waveforms. From this data analysis it was possible to find the dc system resistance, inductance and time constant. The survey of nationally recognized laboratories was conducted to establish that the recommended test criteria were practical. The development of test criteria for dc fuses used in mines was based on the measurement of parameters in the field, the survey of testing laboratories, literature searches, laboratory test, etc. A computer program was written to analytically predict the parameters measured in the field. This approach has limitations but reasonable agreement with field results was obtained. A brief laboratory testing program was carried out to verify the practicality of the recommended criteria and establish the accuracy of the conclusions concerning dc fuse performance.

This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners' welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.

[This report presents the data of one of a series of investigations of the washability of Alabama coals as indicated by float-and-sink tests mode by the Bureau of Fines at the Southern Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers. The Klandyke mine, operated by the Blocton Mining Co., is about 1 mile eat of Vest Blocton, Bibb County, Ala., floor the southwestern, extremity of the Cahaba coal field. The Bureau of Mines already has published three reports that deal with the, washability of Cahaba coals - one a washability study of the Clark bed at Marvel4/ one on the tabling of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds5/, and the third a washability study of the Henry Ellen bed at Acmar6/.]
