Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. Similar to the case of any other business venture, the activities of mining industries are profit-oriented. Nothing will stop successful businesses in their quest for new localities to be prospected for minerals of their choice, because the useful economic life of any mine is limited. Before starting the process of land acquisition, it is important for any mining company to be able to forecast the profitability of the venture. The focus of this paper has been on the prospects of success, concerning the case of the opencast extraction of aggregates for construction. A set of 70 successful and loss-making quarries was subjected to investigation. An international company owns the quarries, which are located in seven European countries. The method of discriminate analysis provided the criteria for assessing future economic performance. The same criteria served the purpose of classifying other quarries belonging to the company.

On aborde ensuite le lien entre les critères à adopter pour la conception des ouvrages et les risques associés à leur rupture. De nouvelles avenues pour aider à contrôler certains problèmes sont enfin discutées, en mettant l?emphase sur la codisposition des roches stériles dans le parc à résidus miniers.

The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.

We present results from petrophysical studies to characterize a Zn-Pb-Ag deposit in Nash Creek, New Brunswick. The measurements are part of an integrated study that includes geological and geophysical data acquired on the property. In order to successfully characterize the ore body, an understanding of the relevant physical parameters and their change with vertical and lateral variations of the target lithology is necessary. The quality of the estimated 3D variation in the physical properties is supported by the presence of several boreholes that randomly span the survey region. Density was measured from cores of thirty-two boreholes across the area. Seventeen of these boreholes constitute two intersecting borehole profiles, which is ideal for locally modeling the 3D distribution of the ore deposit. High densities (>3.2g/cm3) correlate strongly with Zn-rich mineralization zones (low resistivity). Compression and shear wave velocity measurements made from representative core samples of the regional geology range from ~2.91 to ~6.41 km/s for P-waves and from ~1.41 to ~4.20 km/s for S-waves. The lower bounds of these velocity values correspond to regions with a high degree of alteration. Moreover, porosity estimates from rocks on the property suggest that porosities range from 0.35% to 11.79%. Induced polarization (IP) measurements confirm that mineralized samples show a significant chargeability and resistivity contrast with respect to the host rock. Thus, chargeability and resistivity information can be combined to adequately identify conductors associated with mineralization in electrical survey data. Information on these physical parameters and their 3D statistical distribution have serious implications on various aspects of mineral exploration that include: resource estimation, choice of geophysical data acquisition and interpretation, and information for preliminary rock stability assessment.

The deployment of large machinery for low cost, bulk surface mine production operations has resulted in high-impact shovel loading operations (HISLO). In extreme cases, shovels load large dump trucks with 100-ton (or more) passes generating high-impact forces under gravity. HISLO generates high-frequency shockwaves that cause severe truck vibrations exposing operators to whole body vibrations (WBV). Current research study in this area has established that the vibration levels affecting the operator?s seat, lower-back, lumbar and cervical regions fall within the extremely uncomfortable zone compared to the ISO 2631 comfort zone. These results pose health threats to truck operators over long-term exposure to these vibrations. In this paper, the authors will examine engineered solutions to mitigate these health threats.

For some of us, the most disagreeable part of being the blaster- in - charge is doing the required paperwork. Cost coding on time cards, drilling reports, magazine inventory logs, and blast records all eat into our time. When all goes well, which I suppose is 98% of the time, the blast records are submitted and filed, probably never to be seen again. Sometimes a progressive operation will use the information documented in the blast reports to evaluate blasting effectiveness and improve results. When the report is consistently used in this fashion, costs can be reduced and other efficiencies will be realized. A blast report in times past was a simple form that mainly was used to keep track of the drill footage and of the powder used in the shot. However, as the population and consequences of careless blasting increase, multiple levels of blast documentation are now being required nearly everywhere, during all phases of the drill and blast process. We are now compelled to create preliminary blast designs prior to commencing work. We are required to submit pre-blast plans before each shot, and we need to generate post-blast reports that document the details and results of each shot.

Develop tools that mine personnel can use to comply with 30 CFR,Part 47. Background The new MSHA rule, 30 CFR, Part 47 (also known as the HazCom rule), requires all mines to develop a written program to track hazardous chemicals at their sites. More specifically, the rule requires that mines list all chemicals and determine which are hazardous; develop a written Hazard Communication Program; label all containers used to store hazardous chemicals; obtain or develop Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals stored or produced; provide miners with training in working around hazardous chemicals; and make information about hazardous chemicals available to all workers. All mines with six or more employees must have complied with the new rule by September 23, 2002, and mines with five or fewer employees will have to be in compliance by March 21, 2003.

"Assessment of opportunities to improve mineral processing performance in existing concentrators and in describing undeveloped orebodies is key to improving the business case of a mining company. This assessment has traditionally been performed using the distinct and separate inputs from mineral processing and mineral science.More recently, process mineralogy has been used to integrate these two disciplines. This trend has been driven by the need to develop and process more challenging ore deposits, and has been assisted by the availability of modern automated instruments. Together with the acquisition of a QemSCAN (quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscope) from CSIRO in Australia, and with the use of a supporting SEM with EDX/WDX capabilities and an XRD, the development of process mineralogy at Falconbridge commenced in 1997.The sampling challenges in presenting a QemSCAN with representative sample material at the polished section level are significant, but have been effectively addressed. The full description of this aspect is beyond the scope of this paper.It is shown that, by use of this approach, the set nature of an orebody can be best exploited with selected flowsheet changes in a concentrator which address the generic characteristics of the orebody. In this way, the flowsheet provides a process that more effectively fits the mineral processing requirements of the ore. This leads to clear and tangible improvements in grade and recovery."

"Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised.In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations:• Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie. to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits.• Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant.Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation.Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early 1980's. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill® projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product.JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry.They include:• Commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount).• Monographs (Comminution and Blasting).• Technologies (Mine-to-Mill® and flotation optimisation).• Hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift® and the Mineral Liberation Analyser).This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits."

However, if the same belt scale is not properly installed and maintained on the customers conveyor then the scale will not measure up to the claims of the manufacturer or to the requirements of the operator.

This report summarizes the work performed under the USBM Contract No. J0245001. The purpose of this work was to expand and improve the scope and accuracy of the method developed under USBM Contract No. J0113056 for the prediction of the number of overexposed workers in the mining industry. A significant portion of the noise data were acquired during mine visits-that took place in the-course of this contract. These data were obtained with time-resolved dosimeters which among other things store a time history of the sampled noise for an eight hour work period. The remainder of the noise data have been obtained from MSHA files and from other BoM-sponsored projects. The report reviews the prediction model, discusses the model's assumptions and approximations, describes the function of the developed software, offers typical examples on the use of the software and includes plots of the newly acquired noise data records.

Close economic cooperation was established among the countries in western Europe during the seventies. As a consequence, among others, a need for harmonized technical specifications for civil engineering works arose. Technical specifications for design and execution of building and civil engineering structures exist in most of the European countries. In some countries such technical specifications are part of the building regulations and in other they are independent codes of practice and standards. The works on the Eurocodes was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities about 1976. The Eurocodes are intended as common unified design codes for different load bearing structures constructed from different materials. They are also intended to cover design of geotechnical structures. They are established with a view to promote the free movement of goods and services within the member states of the European Community - the so called Internal Market - and within the member countries of the European Free Trade Association, EFTA by removing obstacles arising from different rules for calculation and design.

Low-grade porphyry copper ores containing chalcopyrite as the primary mineral was leached by two strains of acidophilic, thermophilic microbes belonging to the genus Sulfolobus. Leach tests were conducted in glass columns heated to 60-70° C. Pinto Valley and San Manuel ores sized to -1/2 inch + 50 mesh were effectively leached by the thermophilic organisms, but pinto Valley and Cyprus Bagdad ores sized to -2 inch + 1/2 inch resisted leaching. Aeration did not contribute measurably to bacterial copper extraction, since two columns, one inoculated and one sterilized, having a rest/ leach cycle without recurrent aeration exhibited copper extraction patterns similar to those of the aerated columns. Distilled water can be substituted for 9K medium without diminishing copper extraction. Decreasing the pH of the leachate to about 1.8 enhanced the extraction of copper from pinto Valley ore with the thermophilic microbes. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was found to be relatively ineffective at copper extraction from pinto Valley ore. Of eleven solvent extraction reagents tested, Adogen 364 and Warsol at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.012 were inhibitory to oxygen uptake by the two Sulfolobus strains. Di-2-ethyhexyl phosphoric acid at concentrations of 0.1%, 0.01% and 0.001% were totally inhibitory to the respiration of both organisms.

In 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined a 27,680-acre portion of the 30,420-acre King Hill Creek Wilderness Study Area (10-19-2) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by Tertiary tuffs and basalt. There are no known mining claims or prospects in the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. The Volcano mining district is immediately north, but mines there are in granitic rock which does not crop out in the study area. Oil and gas leases were offered for land in the southern part of the area, but no applications were filed, and the lease offering was withdrawn (1985). INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the King Hill Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

"A large-scale panel destress blast was fired at Brunswick mine in the fall of 1999 in order to reduce the ground stresses in a critically important neighbouring mining region. This work, sponsored by the Mining Division of CAMIRO and Brunswick mine, consisted in heavily choke-blasting — and subsequently leaving in place — a massive waste sulphide pillar in the southwest end of the 1000 m level. This paper describes the approach and design methodology used to try to maximize breakage in the rock mass in the area to destress, while minimizing damage to critical infrastructures in the vicinity. The loading operations, as well as the results of the blast — in terms of its field performances, as recorded by near-field blast vibration monitoring equipment, visual postblast assessments and measured impact on the regional stress field — are discussed as well. A brief comparison between the measured stress changes and inelastic numerical modelling of the test site is also presented.Un tir à grande échelle de relâchement des contraintes dans un pilier a été effectué à la mine Brunswick à la fin de l’automne 1999 dans le but de diminuer les contraintes de terrain dans une très importante zone de production adjascente. Froth flotation of iron ores is one of the most widely used methods to upgrade iron ore into high-grade concentrates. In recent years, reverse cationic flotation of iron ores has been specifically the subject of several studies. Since quartz is the most common gangue mineral in iron ores, understanding the behaviour of this mineral was the main target of the majority of such studies. However, with the depletion of mineral deposits considered rich and easy to process, it has become more common to find iron ores with complex gangue minerals, which are composed not only of quartz but by a variety of silicates. The mineralogical composition of the ore is an important factor for determining reagents and mineral processing parameters. The mineralogical suite of an ore also presents a paramount role for operational optimisation of any given flotation process. Some studies were performed with different types of amphiboles and other Fe-bearing silicates, for example, but the influence of the mineralogical nature of these silicates in reverse cationic flotation has not been fully explored and will be discussed here. Changes in the traditionally used reagent scheme for reverse cationic flotation, generally including alkaline pH values, polysaccharides as depressant (mainly starches) and primary ether amines and diamines, are expected when dealing with iron ores with complex silicate gangue composition.CITATION:Veloso de Melo, C H, Correa de Araujo, A and Filippov, L O, 2017.
