The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. Keywords: Undercooling, Convection, Dendrites, Stainless Steel, Levitation Certain Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steel alloys solidify from an undercooled melt by a two-step process in which the metastable ferrite phase forms first followed by the stable austenite phase. Recent experiments have shown that the lifetime of the metastable phase is strongly influenced by flow within the molten sample. The current research will provide insight to why flow affects the metastable phase. This new understanding will lead to the use of convection to control microstructural evolution in spray-forming of stainless steels. Simulations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package, FIDAP, yield a range of convective flow velocities that cause mechanical damage to the dendrites which is compared to experimental results. If the convective velocities are great enough that the dendrites bend, then low angle boundaries form at the points of collision. These result in high energy sites that could serve as nuclei for the stable phase.

During the construction of the Island Line (ISL) in Hong Kong between 1982 and 1986 piled foundations of a building were encountered in a tunnel drive. As the tunnel alignment could not be changed work was temporarily suspended whilst grouting took place beneath the pile cap. The tips of the piles were then cut off. The normal precast concrete lining segments were replaced by the "stiffer" spheroidal graphite iron segments and tunnelling resumed. Settlement of the building was found to be under 10 mm due to the tunnel drive and no damage was reported to the building.

ABSTRACT: The significant effect of fracture surface morphology on the mechanical behaviour of rock masses is well known and has been studied by many people. For linear profiles taken from fracture surfaces, short- and long-period variation has traditionally been described using the descriptors ‘roughness’ and ‘waviness’, with Fourier series analysis being perhaps the most commonly used technique to distinguish between the two attributes. However, the mathematical procedure is involved and the assumptions that have to be made may not be appropriate for rock fracture surfaces. In this paper, an alternative method is presented that enables us to distinguish between roughness and waviness of a linear profile by performing only one straightforward analysis. In our technique, surface morphology is studied in terms of the distribution of unit normal vectors to the profile. The statistical analysis of the distribution is performed using Riemannian, rather than the customary Euclidean, geometry, and from this the 1D Riemannian dispersion parameter (DR1) is obtained, which quantifies the geometry of the profile. The method is applied at different scales to both synthetic sinusoidal profiles and real rock profiles. The results show how periodic behaviour of the profile is revealed at scales where DR1 is substantially equal to zero. RESUME: L’influence significative de la morphologie des épontes sur le comportement mécanique des massifs rocheux est bien connue et a fait l’objet de nombreuses études. Pour les profils lineraires, les variations de courtes et longues périodes sont traditionnellement décrites par les indicateurs “rugosité” et “ondulation” qui sont le plus couramment distingués à l’aide d’une analyse en series de Fourrier. Cependant, la méthode de calcul utilisée et les hypothèses faites ne sont pas appropriées dans le cas des épontes rocheuses. Cet article présente une méthode alternative qui permet de distinguer la rugosité de l’ondulation d’un profil en réalisant une seule analyse directe. Avec notre technique, la morphologie de l’éponte est étudiée comme une distribution spatiale de vecteurs normaux au profil. L’analyse de cette distribution est réalisée à l’aide de la géométrie Riemannienne plutôt que la géométrie classique Euclidienne et permet d’identifier la dispersion Riemanienne en 1D (DR1) qui quantifie la géométrie du profil. Cette méthode est appliquée à différentes échelles sur des profils artificiels sinusoïdaux et des épontes naturelles. Les résultats montrent que le comportement périodique du profil est révélé à des échelles où DR1 est essentiellement égal à zéro. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der signifikante Effekt von Bruchoberflaechen Morphologien auf das mechanische Verhalten von Gesteinsmassen ist gut bekannt und von vielen Bearbeitern untersucht worden. Traditionel lineare Profile von Bruchflaechen sind mit kurz und lang periodischen Variationen, die auch als “Rauhigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bezeichnet worden sind, beschrieben worden. Hierbei ist wohl die Fourier Serien Analyse das wichtigste Hilfsmittel zur Unterscheidung der beiden Attribute gewesen. Hierfuer wird jedoch ein mathematisches Prozedere verlangt und Vorraussetzungen gemacht, die vielleicht nicht fuer Gesteinsbruchflaechen zutreffend sind. In dieser Publikation wird eine andere Methode vorgestellt, die uns mit Hilfe nur einer einfachen Analyse erlaubt zwischen “Rauigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bei einem linearen Profil zu unterscheiden. In unserer Methode wird die Gesteinsoberflaeche unter zu Hilfenahme der Verteilung von Einheitsnormalvektoren beschrieben. Die statistische Analyse der raeumlichenVerteilung dieser Vektoren wird mit Hilfe der Riemannschen, anstatt der ueblicherweise benutzten Euklidischen, Geometrie durchgefuehrt. Von ihr wird der Riemannsche Dispersions Parameter (DR1) abgeleitet, der die Geometrie des Profils quantifiziert. Diese Methode ist bei verschiedenen Masstaeben sowohl auf rein harmonische (sinusoidale), syntetische Profile als auch auf Gesteinsprofile angewendet worden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei Masstaeben bei denen DR1 nahe Null ist periodische Characteristika der Profile hervortreten.

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6·2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

Anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be used as a precursor for the manufacturing of nuclear-grade zirconium metal. This can be done by fluorinating plasma-dissociated zircon with ammonium bifluoride in a batch reactor. This paper describes the batch process. It was proved that anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be manufactured by this route as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The process shows potential for scaling up to the kilogram scale and possibly the tonnage scale.

China has been suffering from coal and gas outbursts since 1950s. Nowadays, the situation has become worse than ever with the need to mine deeper coal deposits at higher production rates in a more complex underground mining environment. In the year 2006 alone, 37 outbursts occurred in underground coal mines with a death toll of 232. This paper describes a case study of an outburst event, which occurred in July 2006 during the shaft development of the Mengjin Coal Mine, Henan Province, China at a depth of 768m below surface. Detailed analysis of the possible causes that led to the occurrence of the outburst is reported. These include the study of complex geological features, gas storage conditions, possible improper technical management practice as well as incomplete prevention and control measures. Based on the case study and the observation of outburst occurrence in China in the year 2007, suggestions have been put forward to help prevent and control future coal and gas outbursts.

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

"Air Products approached LAC Minerals in 1987 to initiate trials with pure oxygen in the leach circuit at several LAC facilities in Canada. This paper gives an overview of oxygen use and covers specific operating data from the Doyon and Terrains Aurifères mills near Val D'Or in northwestern Quebec. LAC also uses oxygen at the Macassa mill in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.In addition to the LAC facilities, oxygen is currently in use for test purposes at the Holt McDermott mine in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and the Camflo mine near Val D'Or.There are two requirements for oxygen in the cyanide leach mill. Firstly, oxygen is required in the familiar gold dissolution reaction as follows:(1) 4 AU (s) + 8 NaCN (aq) + 02 (aq)+ 2H 20(aq) - 4NaAu(CN) 2(aq)+ 4Na OH(aq)Of the reagents on the left side of the equation, the availability of gold is fixed by the ore in question. Obviously, water is available in excess, 1eaving cyanide and oxygen as the limiting constituents in the process. Most mills operate with an excess of cyanide, which is fairly closely monitored. Dissolved oxygen levels, however, are not normally watched very closely and find their own level based on the temperature, the availability of compressed air and the ability of the ore to consume oxygen.Typical D.O. levels are in the 3-8 ppm range, however levels less than 1 ppm are not uncommon for refractory ores.With pure oxygen, dissolved oxygen levels as high as 30 ppm can be achieved. (Figure #1). This greatly accelerates the kinetics of the leach reaction and may also shift the reaction further towards completion thus increasing gold dissolution slightly."

Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

Design of underground excavations in coal mines involves two major tasks: estimation of stresses and determination of rock mass strength. Owing to the complicated nature of rock mass, progress in its strength determination has lagged significantly compared to advancements in stress analysis techniques. Also, because of the impracticality of conducting field-scale strength tests, experimental approaches have very limited applicability in estimating rock mass strength. As a result, many empirical rock failure criteria have been developed based on observed performance of in situ rock structures. Unfortunately, all the popular rock mass strength criteria are based on data from large-scale ?isotropic? non-coal structures and thus can not be directly applied to coal mines. In this paper, an attempt has been made to adopt the popular Hoek-Brown (H-B) criterion for use with coal measure rocks. First, the H-B criterion is examined against laboratory triaxial strength data for different types of coal measure rocks. Then, procedures to estimate the H-B rock mass strength parameters relevant to coal measure rocks are suggested. Finally, a case-study has been given to show the usefulness of the proposed strength estimation approach.

Dynamic pile testing is now over 20 years old as a routinely applied tool for evaluating driven pile installation. The first test on a cast-in-place pile was performed more that 15 years ago. The research that produced the method began almost 30 years ago. But, questions still arise regarding the appropriate use of this technique so some review is useful. Today a number of methods including dynamic testing all depending in some way on the application of dynamics are in routine use. First, Wave Equation analysis can be used to predict pile driveability before going to the field. The same approach can be used during driving to estimate the bearing capacity based on the blow count observed in the field. Dynamic measurements, on the other hand, can only be used after pile driving has begun. They offer predictions of pile capacity as well as measurements of hammer, driving system, and pile driving performance characteristics. The first part of this paper will be devoted to discussing how the foundation engineer can use these tools. First, a brief review of what dynamic methods actually do. In Wave Equation analysis a numerical model of the hammer, driving system, pile, and the soil is created by the engineer. The hammer is dropped on the pile and using a discrete, dynamic analysis the motion of the individual pile elements is calculated as a function of time. Of course, input information must be supplied by the program user to describe the hammer, driving system, pile, and soil. In the current state of development, the primary problem in input data is with the hammer performance (efficiency) and the soil description. Research may be able to do a better job with the soil data, but hammer performance will always vary from hammer to hammer and is dependent on the affectiveness of the inspection process. Prior to beginning pile driving the Wave Equation analysis supplies the best available estimate of what will happen when driving begins. It gives an estimate of blow count during driving, driving stresses, both tension and compression in the pile, and for diesel hammers, stroke. The selection of the driving system can be checked with the results of Wave Equation analysis and modifications can be made if required. For example, if the blow count at the required capacity was deemed excessive by the contractor a larger hammer could be tried or if driving stresses were too high changes could be made in the cushion or the hammer selection could be modified. All of these modifications are possible with only the cost of a computer run. The primary questions regarding the accuracy and reliability of Wave Equation analysis at this time is with regard to the assumptions made to represent the soil characteristics and the difficulty in predicting hammer performance.

An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. The development of such an expert supervisory system prototype applied to a mineral crushing plant is presented. "Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. "Open pit mines can produce large disturbances within regional hydrogeologic systems. The degree of disturbance and the consequences on the local environment depend on the size of the pit and on the physical setting of the mine. Comparisons and contrasts are presented for three Noranda base metal open pit mine sites.The Brunswick Mining and Smelting No 6 open pit has a surface area of 11 ha and a depth of 185 m. It is located within complexly deformed schists and meta-volcanic rocks. The massive sulphide and iron formations visible along the north and southwest walls of the pit generate acid drainage. Mining ceased in 1983, and the pit is presently being filled with waste rock and neutralized drainage water. Water balance calculations estimated a total fill up time of sixteen years. As the water level rises, leakage to groundwater could take place across a fault zone intersecting the pit.The Mattabi Mines F-Group pit has a surface area of approximately 3 ha and a depth of 50 m and is also set in meta-volcanic rocks and acid generating iron formations. Production at this site ceased in 1982, and the low pH pit water is neutralized and pumped into a nearby lake at least every five years. Major water inflows are from precipitation and groundwater. Groundwater mounds within adjacent high land surrounding the pit provide a natural hydraulic barrier to groundwater flow, except for the southeast side. As a consequence, the pit water elevation is being kept below the elevation of the nearby creek in which some of the pit water could drain.The Bell Copper open pit covers an area of 40 ha and is 270 m deep. With present ore reserves, the mine might be in operation until 1992. The geology around the pit consists of andesitic tufts, siltstones and shales, and the acid generation potential of the rock is relatively low. A recent hydrogeological study estimated fill up time by precipitation and groundwater to be in the order of 260 years.With increasingly more stringent requirements for mine closure, it is anticipated that more detailed hydrological and hydrogeological studies of open pits will be required to determine post-closure environmental impacts and the suitability of open pits for mine waste disposal."

"When certain gold ores containing pyrite, graphite, humates and fumates or other organic compounds which are possibly adsorbed on clay minerals are treated with aqueous solution of alkali metal cyanide, the aurocyanide complex which forms is adsorbed by these ""pregrobbing"" species in the ore. Dissolution of gold proceeds until chemical equilibrium is attained between the cyanide complex adsorbed by the ore and in solution.Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may be used to decrease the adsorptive activity of the prerobbing species in the ore. It has successfully improved recovery at Holt-McDermott Mine and is highly biodegradable.INTRODUCTION Precious metal-bearing ores containing preg-robbing species are poorly amenable to standard cyanidation techniques. The ""preg-robbing"" impurities with which they are associated tend to adsorb the gold cyanide complexes and carry them through the circuit to the tailings. Also, gold may be associated with these impurities in the ore and not be leached by the cyanide complexing agents used in conventional cyanidation techniques.Methods for dealing with the problem of preg-robbinq impurities in gold ores are:Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), in which granular activated carbon is added to compete with preg-robbing species for the gold cyanide complexes. This process can improve gold recovery in mildly preg-robbing ores especially when fine carbons with very high activities are used. However, with severely graphitic ore, the carbon associated with the rock may outperform the granular activated charcoal.Chemical Oxidation, in which the ore is subjected to preliminary chemical oxidation techniques to oxidize carbonaceous materials using such diverse reagents including ozone, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorates and oxygen prior to subjecting the oxidized ore to standard cyanidation treatment to extract gold. This is generally a costly method and will not prove economical on a low-grade ore."
