Identifying, quantifying and minimizing technical risks associated to investment decisions is a key challenge for the minerals industry decision takers and investors. However, risk analysis in most bankable mine feasibility studies are based on stochastic modelling of project NPV which, in most cases, fail to provide decision makers with a truly comprehensive analysis of risks associated to technical and management uncertainty and, as the result, are of little use for risk management and project optimization. This paper presents a value-chain risk management approach where project risk is evaluated for each step of the project lifecycle, from exploration to mine closure, and risk management is performed as part of a stepwise value added optimization process.

The orogenic gold deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Orogenic gold deposits are typically quartz vein deposits formed in fault and shear systems at crustal levels within and above the brittle ductile transition zone, at depths of 3 12 km and temperatures from 200¦ to 400¦C. In New Zealand, orogenic gold deposits are found in regionally metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age. The deposits in Paleozoic rocks include those at Golden Blocks in Northwest Nelson, Lyell and Reefton on the West Coast, and Preservation Inlet in Fiordland. Quartz veins are developed along shear zones that dip steeply and generally strike parallel to the axes of folding in the greywacke and argillite/slate host rocks, although most are discordant to bedding. The lodes are typically less than 1 m wide and extend an average 200 m horizontally and vertically, but the Birthday Reef at Blackwater, Reefton, the largest quartz vein deposit in Paleozoic rocks, averages 60 cm in width and was mined over a strike length of 1070 m, and to a depth of 830 m. Disseminated gold occurs adjacent to the quartz lodes at Globe-Progress and some other Reefton deposits. The deposits in Mesozoic rocks are hosted in schist of Otago and Marlborough, and schist and greywacke of the Southern Alps. The lodes are typically lensoidal, less than 1 m wide and localised along single or multiple parallel shear zones that generally dip steeply, and are discordant to the schist foliation and bedding. A notable exception is Macraes, where the lodes are developed in the semi-concordant, low angle Hyde Macraes Shear Zone that has a strike length greater than 25 km.

SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) is an in-situ oil recovery technique for heavy oil reservoirs. The technique has been successfully applied to many projects in the past 25 years and the process has been, now, well understood. It is now believed that geomechanics plays an important role in SAGD and should be considered in numerical or analytical modeling. Currently, geomechanics is numerically modeled through combining a multi-phase flow and a geomechanical simulator. Numerical modeling is, however, time consuming, need lots of input data, and could not be used for quick decision-making purposes. To decrease the modeling time, this study based on a new version of the Reis drainage model, proposes coupled mathematical model and reserves the effect of geomechanics in the process. Results showed a perfect match with the past experimental and numerical data.

A search for the keyword nano reveals that it has not made a significant entry into the mineral processing research literature. In contrast, the terms micelle, colloid, interface, and monolayer are well established there. By considering nanoscience as colloid and interface science at the nanoscale, it is claimed that several previous and current investigations in the broad field of mineral processing fall under the umbrella of nanoscience. Several examples from hydrometallurgical processing systems (invisible gold and activated carbon in gold extraction; monolayers, reverse micelles, and microemulsions in solvent extraction; nanobiofilms and nanoparticles in biohydrometallurgy) are highlighted in support of this view.

Oil sand tailings are disposed of in large ponds in which MFT (Mature Fine Tailings, a stable suspension of fine particles in water) forms after many years of settling. Long-term storage of large volumes of MFT is costly to maintain and also poses an environmental liability. The Advanced Separation Technologies laboratory at CANMET Western Research Centre has worked closely with oil sand companies to eliminate MFT generation by applying paste technology to oil sand tailings. In this process the fine tailings are flocculated to produce a thickened material that has the potential to consolidate to a dry landscape, while warm water is recovered and recycled for reuse in the extraction process. This paper presents some results of an extensive technical program involving bench-scale tests for flocculant selection and continuous thickener pilot tests.

Accurate sampling of slurry streams is extremely important for metallurgical accounting in mining operations, not only for measuring the ore grade from the mine, but also for measuring the recovery of mineral by the mineral processing plant. Accurate sampling is also required for intermediate streams in complex circuits for determining efficiencies of processing units within the plant. As the profitability of the minerals industry is squeezed more with time, greater emphasis is being placed on efficient use of the resource and accountability of the various sections of the mining operations. This has led to increased awareness and interest in obtaining statistically correct sampling across the operations. Accurate sampling is not only required for metallurgical accounting, but is also required for on-line analysis of the slurry streams for elemental analysis and for particle size. Sampling of slurry streams for metallurgical accounting purposes has traditionally been one of the areas of concern in mineral processing plants. In the first instance, the sampler must be designed to comply with the fundamental principles of sampling theory and must provide a representative sample of the slurry stream. In the second instance, the sampler must continue to reliably provide a representative sample, regardless of wear of the equipment or build up of solids with time and other operating issues. To-date the main type of sampler that has been used in mineral processing plants for metallurgical accounting has been the Cross-Cut sampler. These have a cutter that periodically cuts across the full slurry stream. For large flow slurry streams, these are often followed by a secondary and perhaps a tertiary sampler, to reduce the flow-rate or sample, to a manageable size. This paper discusses a new method of sampling slurry streams that has been developed by Thermo Gamma-Metrics, previously known as Amdel Instrumentation. The new samplers overcome many of the problems associated with cross-cut samplers while providing a sample which is representative of the main stream, throughout the life of the sampling system. The sampler is called the SamStat (Sampling Station) and it is now proven in many applications across many countries and mineral processing plants (PGMs, Cu/Au, Pb/Zn, etc).

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of Investment Value or Use Value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would sell at if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation. The comparable sales and replacement cost approaches used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail us in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

As many, perhaps more, risen have died from gases and lade of oxygen (known as "after-damp") than have been killed by the blast and hart. Me explosions often are caused by it combination of factors, including concentration of methane in air, formation of clouds of dust, and the presence of a flame or spark. These explosion factors have varied with changes ill milting method and practises over the years, but the basis causes have always been the salve. Understanding of the causes and to acceptance of ways to guard against explosions and their effects have been slow to spread from investigates to officials and Own to bosses and miners. Such belief is based on the human failure to maintain and observe necessary precautions. Over the last few years, and especially the last few months, issues relating to Corporate Governance in industry in general, and the Minerals industry in particular, have become increasingly topical, as a result of a number of scandals and failures. The development of International and National Codes for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves began some years ago, and has been followed by more stringent Listing Rules for the Securities Exchanges, as well as more standardised formats and protocols for financial reporting of assets and activities. More recently, some countries have adopted Codes for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, which have focussed on standardisation of valuation approaches to be adopted, and the qualifications of people deemed competent to sign off such valuations. This process has not been without criticism, the main criticism being the proliferation of local standards and regulations, which are often difficult to apply and regulate, or which are too prescriptive for multinational mining companies to deal with. In South Africa, these concerns have been recognised, while at the same time a need has been identified to establish a Code which could be applied to South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. Such a development would necessitate that the Code satisfies the needs of the continent, but in a global context. This global context has already been set by the activities of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions, the International Valuations Standards Committee and the International Accounting Standards Board. This paper explains the progress and process that has been established in South Africa for this purpose, and highlights the key issues which are open to public debate, so that the process is inclusive and transparent, whilst at the same time it is consistent with international time frames, and provides a deliverable product that meets the desired objectives.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

Change occurs all of the time. In fact, it’s fair to say that change is a constant. Sometimes the change is inconsequential, but sometimes the change impacts us d i rectly and severely. Take regulations, for instance. Complying with regulatory requirements is just part of the job for those involved with explosives. But in recent years, it seems as if new or revised regulations in areas such as hazardous materials training, drug and alcohol testing, security issues, or local licensing/permitting standards are changing the way we operate on a recurring basis. Simply keeping track of all of these regulations has become a full-time job.

"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. The project was continued in 1946 and terminated in 1947.While the Bureau of Mines project was in progress, the Morgan and Fullion tunnel workings were surveyed by Bureau engineers.ACKNOWKEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy, It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. Lack of visibility makes it difficult for continuous miner (CM) operators to judge the desired sump depth. The resulting inaccuracies have proven to lead to significant production losses. This problem of measuring the depth of sump has been addressed in the past and a few measurement techniques have evolved. Despite various attempts, a suitable commercial depth of sump sensor does not yet exist. A system using the Doppler effect has been patented, developed and successfully tested. The method is non-intrusive and involves a beam of microwaves being projected obliquely at the roof. The received signal is analysed with respect to the transmitted signal, yielding the desired measure of displacement. Surface tests have revealed an accuracy of a few centimetres. Underground simulation tests on a load haulage dump (LHD) machine have verified the repeatability under the harsh conditions of interest. The system is presently being installed on a CM where it is to undergo a long-term performance evaluation. This paper presents the theory behind such a system, the hardware developed, the signal processing requirements and an analysis of the test results.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. Dean, formerly assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Motion capture involves recording the position and global orientation of joint sensors of a real object, in most cases a real person performing some human activities. This information is usually recorded at uniformly spaced instances of time, or as it is often called frame-by-frame. Then the recorded motion data sets are processed and mapped into a skeleton hierarchy of a virtual, computer simulated human figure to control the motion of the virtual human in the computer simulation. In the first part of the paper we review several new techniques developed to facilitate the manipulation, noise reduction, storage and reuse of captured data, which have a potential to reduce the overall cost of motion simulation and improve its realism. In the second part of the paper we consider the real life problem of reducing a worker?s risk from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. We formulate a set of requirements to motion editing for this particular task and analyze the limitation of existing techniques

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. The studies were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell, chief engineer, Petroleum and Natural-Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, Washington; D. C., and H. C.
