Some 30,000 people attended from 50 countries. Over 600 exhibitors brought with them a billion dollars of mining technology, ranging from tiny high-precision valves to giant off-highway trucks. Twenty-seven technical sessions with more than 100 papers covered the gamut of mining advancements. It was a grand display of industry vitality just to power the huge exhibit area required 22,000 kW of electricity each day, and support services for the exposition created more than 1000 daily jobs for local labor. Unquestionably, Las Vagas knew the miners were in town for the American Mining Congress' International Mlining Show.

CONSIDERABLE interest has been shown lately in various types of furnaces for the production of high, temperatures, both for laboratory purposes and for small industrial uses. Dr. J. A. Harker1 described certain modifications of the Arsem graphite resistance helix for high-temperature work at the National Physical Laboratory. Dr. Northrup ,also has developed two interesting forms of high-temperature furnaces. In 1911, Messrs. Winne and Dantsizen2 described two forms, of resistance furnaces using ductile molybdenum or tungsten as resistors. Since the discovery, by this laboratory, of methods for producing these metals in ductile form, their use as resistance elements in the research laboratory of the General Electric Co. has grown to such an extent that they are now almost indispensable. These furnaces are used here for alloy research, annealing, heat-treating, and practically all f the thermal processes requiring temperatures above 900° C. Various types of furnaces have been developed to meet the general needs of laboratory work, and it is the purpose of this paper briefly to describe some of these furnaces. A tubular furnace wound with a metallic resistor is the simplest type to construct, and almost every laboratory has made such furnaces. The only essential difference between a furnace wound with platinum or base metal and one wound with tungsten or molybdenum is that the coils of the latter must be heated in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. It has long been our custom here to build our resistance furnaces with a metallic casing from which the tube could be easily removed for rewinding. The heat-insulating material-usually calcined magnesia, alumina, silica, or silex, depending upon the nature of the resistor-is used in powdered form so that it can he readily removed and replaced. High grade jig and low grade flotation concentrates used in the following experiments, are produced from silver ore at the mine. The study was carried out to recover the silver and other metals from these concentrates by hydrometallurgical methods. The concentrates were subjected to two stage oxida¬tion leaches in a HNO3-H2SO4 medium. The dissolved metals were recovered by selective precipitation of: (a) silver chloride, (b) iron-arsenic-bismuth residue, (c) copper sulphide, (d) cobalt-nickel sulphide. The effluent solution contained only ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate. The silver chloride was further processed to the high purity silver powder by the AgCl ? Ag2S ? Ag2SO4 ? Ag° route. The recovery of silver from the concentrates was over 98% and other metals from 95 to 99%.

THIS paper is the third of a series treating of the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. The first1 outlined the general problem; the second2 proposed a classification of lode ores, and showed how the distribution of the deposits is in a certain measure controlled by the contour of the roof of the parent batholith. A number of mining districts were discussed, the examples being selected chiefly from group 2 of the classification. The proposed classification of lode deposits, briefly stated, is as follows: 1. Cryptobatholithic: near hidden batholiths which have not yet been exhumed by erosion. 2. Acrobatholithic: in and near cupolas or domes of batholiths-the high points of larger underlying masses. 3. Epibatholithic: on batholiths, near their rims, but below eroded cupolas, or below the highest points of the roofs. 4. Embatholithic: among closely-spaced outcrops which probably are parts of a single batholith. The outcrops of invaded rocks predominate. 5. Endobatholithic: in and near roof pendants of large batholiths. The invading rocks predominate. 6. Hypobatholithic: in deeply-eroded batholiths, where even roof pendants, have been -eroded. Deposits of certain metals on the roofs of the batholiths are much more numerous in some positions than deposits of other metals, and the horizontal zonal arrangements of lodes of different metals are shown characteristically only in certain groups. In a large measure, also, the character of the fracturing and metallization is determined by, the-position on the roof, of the batholith.

In August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model I1 total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey.

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.

For some time attempts have been made to improve drilling efficiency (and therefore reduce costs) by introducing certain reagents to the flushing medium. Much of this interest is the result of the Russian book, Hardness Reducers in Drilling, by Rehbinder, Schreiner, and Zhigach, published in 1944. Before embarking on full-scale drilling tests, it was decided to investigate the effects on the tensile strength; these results would help in the selection of the proper reagent and its optimum concentration. Selection of Tensile Strength Testing A drilling system basically performs two separate operations: 1) Breakage of rock. 2) Removal of the broken pieces of rock. Both affect drilling and drill performance but are distinct and separate phases of the process. Causing rock to break during drilling is a matter of generating sufficient stress with a drill bit to exceed the strength of the rock. This strength of the rock may be termed its drilling strength; it is not equivalent to any of the well-known strength parameters. Various criteria have been employed to measure the efficiency of a given drilling system or for comparing different systems and one of the most important criteria is "speed of drilling." Speed of drilling is a function of drilling strength of the rock. Many researchers have tried to correlate the speed of drilling with the strength properties of rock and compressive as well as tensile strength values have been found to give reasonable correlation." As the strength of rock drilled increases, speed decreases. As the Brazilian testing requires the least amount of core, this test was selected. Material Tested Broken Hill lode quartzite has been used in these tests. It is composed chiefly of quartz with varying amounts of sericite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, and garnet. The total porosity of this quartzite is about 11%.

THE continual improvements in. the two extremes of the drilling, unit, the drill and bit, have prompted critical examination of the drill steel, the weak link of this drilling unit. Obviously, little is to be gained from the betterment of the drill and bit if the drill steel which transmits the force needed for drilling from the machine to the bit cannot stand long hard service. The technology of the bit has advanced from the integral type to steel detachables, thence to the tungsten carbide insert. The carbide insert is the most significant advance in the bit, bringing it to the level of a machine tool with its performance records under constant surveillance. Long steel changes have become advantageous because the carbide bit will drill greater footages without replacement than did the steel bit: The development of the tungsten carbide insert opened new fields of endeavor in drilling with percussion drills here- to fore known, but limited by the steel bit. After the introduction of the tungsten carbide bit, drill manufacturers began promotion of long feed shells, lighter drifters and stopers, and easily handled auxiliary equipment. Ultimately this promotion of better equipment was intended to increase the bit-against-rock time of the drill shift. The possibility of oil and gas production in Alabama his been little considered as yet. Gas and some oil have been found in northwestern Alabama, near Birmingham, in the Pennsylvanian beds, but the oil and gas possibilities in the Cretaceous beds are not generally appreciated. The recent activity of oil companies in that State has attracted much attention, and in this paper the main structural and the general strati-graphic features are described. Four favorable areas are outlined. These contain folds of major interest. There are other favorable areas which have not been mapped-l Commercial pools discovered in this area would have the advantage of being near tidewater. Mobile, Ala., on the Gulf of Mexico, would be the logical site for refineries and shipping facilities. A pipe line could readily be laid to that city from the Hatchitigbee and the Jackson areas. The logical outlet for the Geneva and the Gordon areas would be Panama City, Ha., on the Gulf of Mexico. Topography The whole of the area under consideration lies in the Gulf coastal plain and slopes gently to the southwest and west. The elevations vary from 200 to 400 ft. PROPERTIES of materials containing a hard con-stituent dispersed in a metallic matrix are dependent on the distribution of the hard phase.'-' The grain growth of titanium carbide in liquid nickel was studied in order to understand microstructural development in this and similar systems. Smith" has examined the influence of surface energy on the distribution of phases in alloys. The grain growth of tungsten carbide in cobalt has been the subject of many conflicting theories. Those prior to 1950 have been summarized by Goetzel.' Recently, Gurland and Norton3 and Gurland8 have indicated that growth occurs primarily by diffusion through the liquid phase in order to lower the inter-facial energy between the carbide and the liquid metal. In the development of the Ti-C-Ni ternary phase diagram, Stover and Wulff9 have shown that both eutectiferous dendritic titanium carbide, and primary titanium carbide which had developed crystals of cubic symmetry, were rounded by heating below the solidus, and that if primary carbide was already present the typical eutectic decomposition products were not formed. Experimental Procedure The infiltration technique was used to study the grain growth of titanium carbide in nickel. In contrast to sintering, infiltration more readily assures uniform dispersion of the two phases, and the problems associated with mixing by milling; i.e., mill contamination, breakdown of original carbide size in the operation, development of interfering surface films, etc., are avoided. In addition, the complicating effect of densification by shrinkage is eliminated. The titanium carbides used were commercial grades. Lime-roasting is a term proposed by Ingalls' for the operation of forcing air under pressure through a mixture of galena and lime at the kindling-temperature with the object of oxidizing lead and sulphur and of fritting or fusing the charge. If finely-divided galena were treated in this manner without the addition of lime, the heat set free by the oxidation of part of the lead and the sulphur would be sufficiently great to fuse un-decomposed sulphide, and thus stop desulphurization. Besides the chemical action that the addition of lime, limestone or gypsum to the charge may have, the admixture has the physical effect that it keeps the particles of galena separated from one another and accessible to the oxidizing effect of the air. At present, three methods of lime-roasting are carried out on a working-scale,—the Huntington-Heberlein, the Carmichael-Bradford and the Savelsberg2 processes. In the last, which interests us here, an 8-ton charge is made up of galena, limestone and perhaps some siliceous or ferruginous flux; the whole is crushed to pass a screen with 3-mm. holes and moistened with 5 per cent. of water. It is fed gradually into a bowl-shaped converter, 6.56 ft. in diameter, supported by trunnions attached to a truck. On the bottom the converter has a grate with blast-inlet beneath. GOODALE, Butte, ,Mont.-While there are many points in Mr. Read's, paper which I am not prepared to discuss thoroughly, I am inclined to believe that difficulties are involved in the establishment of all employment bureau, which shall have exclusive control over the employment and discharge of workmen. I suppose you .have heard a great deal: about the so-called "rustling card? at the works of the Anaconda company. That is a very innocent sort of card, although the I. W. W. organization has made a great deal of noise about it. An applicant for a job is handed a blank on which he tells his nationality, his age, whether married or single, and the place of his last employment. The company then writes to the place where he says he was last employed to find out whether he is telling the truth; we do not ask the previous employer whether the man is blacklisted or has anything; against his record; but simply, "Was this man formerly in your employ?" A great hullabaloo has been made, about this practice by some of the men in Montana who are afraid, of their own records; but out of 53,000 applications for employment received by the Anaconda company since the employment bureau was formed, only 647 were rejected, which does

In the winter of 1895 to 1896, during the construction of the Jackson and Cincinnati railroad, running from Addison, Lenawee county, Mich., to Jackson, Mich., in a northerly direction, I had occasion to observe some interesting geological features, described below, in a cut of this railroad made through the low ridge of gravel and sand, dividing the valley of Silver Lake and Silver Creek from the Goose Lake and Goose Creek valley, in Lenawee county. The surface-deposits of this part of the county are, as is well known, of glacial origin. Gently rounded, long ridges of sand, gravel and clay intervene between the marshy bottoms and the lakes of the valleys. The nature of the deposits, varying from a sandy clay or clayey sand to fine and coarse gravel and pure siliceous sand on the one hand, and to a very tough, fine, uniform and often indurated clay on the other, as well as the irregular and sudden changes, sharply divided, between these materials composing the ridges, in the cuts made through them by the railroad, would admit of no doubt that this country owes its present surface-configuration primarily to the action of the last glacial period, which covered its surface with an immense ice-sheet. The well-known ice-markings on the huge granite, schist, greenstone and conglomerate boulders found everywhere imbedded and protruding from the surface, add their testimony to the other characteristics mentioned. Most of the cuts made by the railway through the ridges showed in a marked degree the irregular arrangement and the sudden changes of and between the materials mentioned above. THE area in which spodumene-bearing pegmatites occur extends from Gaffney, S. C., in a northerly direction to Lincolnton, N. C., a distance of about 16 miles. The zone averages 2 miles in width. Interest in this area was first aroused by the discovery of small amounts of cassiterite in the pegmatites and in greissen which occurs on the walls of some of the pegmatites. Attempts were made from 1880 into the 1920's to mine and concentrate cassiterite, but there were no successful operations. In 1935 L. M. Williams became interested in the area and began prospecting by trenching and sinking several small shafts. He gradually gained control of a considerable acreage south of the city of Kings Mountain, N. C. Mr. Williams states that he produced some ore from a shaft which he shipped to the Maywood Chemical Co. in the late 1930's. In 1937 G. H. Chambers of the Foote Mineral Co. visited the area and examined several properties, but the lithium market was too small to support the necessary concentrating plant.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Braxil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the .rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 m thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P2O5. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tons that average a bout 13 % P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

THIS paper describes the methods used to determine the rates of payment for contract work and the plan of contract supervision in the Elm Orlu mine. A discussion of the theory of wages and the eternal question-what is a just wage-are beyond the scope of this article. In the fall of 1920 the Elm Orlu was the largest mine in Butte using the day's pay system of payment for stoping operations. High labor and supply costs and a falling market for the product of the mine made economic mining difficult. The mining method had been changed from the square set stoping to timbered rilling to eliminate most of the shoveling. There was no opportunity to reduce the cost of supplies other than more rigid economy in their use. It was recognized, however, that the labor efficiency was low and that the reduction in costs depended on increasing the output per man. While in general, the low man efficiency was a resultant of the high wages paid and the shortage of men during the war and subsequent period of inflation, it was felt that the contract and bonus system used in the other mines was the main factor in that the most capable and energetic men had been attracted to those mines where more than average skill and dili-gence were recognized by more than average pay.

IN the summer of 1881 we were forced to break up and remove the large mass of iron which had accumulated under No. 2 furnace at Glendon, in order to prepare the foundations of the new furnace which has taken its place. We used "Atlas" powder, drilling the holes with a pair of Rand drills. These worked very well when the iron was at all uniform in hardness; but this was not often the case; and it frequently happened that the holes were hopelessly blocked when but little over a foot deep. Good tamping became, therefore very important. The common method of tamping is certainly very dangerous when there is a percussion cap in the hole, and has, no doubt, caused many of the accidents attributed directly to high explosives. We found an excellent and safe method by using plaster of Paris, mixed to the proper consistency and ponred into the holes as soon as they were loaded. Clean dry sand was mixed with the plaster to reduce the quantity needed. With proper attention the tamping would set in a few minutes, and little or no more time was required than for tamping in the ordinary way. We used a "magneto" machine (Laflin and Rand) to fire the holes; and an additiollal advantage in the plan was that any risk of cutting the exploder-wires in tamping was avoided. We found it worth while to load holes not over 13 inches deep in a block 3 or 4 feet thick since the bottom of the hole was enlarged by each shot so that the next time it could be loaded more heavily, and three or four shots in this way often did as much good as a new hole twice the depth, to drill which might have taken ten or twelve hours. The rise in temperature when boiled plaster solidifies is not sufficient to ignite the exploders, as we found by repeated trials before using it in a loaded hole.

INTRODUCTION. WHILE the reducing action of organic matter, of ferrous sulphate, and of hydrogen sulphide has frequently been invoked to account for the deposition of native gold and silver from ore-forming solutions, the high efficiency in this respect of certain of the metallic minerals which form the ore itself has not been sufficiently recognized. If a little finely powdered chalcocite is placed. in a test-tube and 2 or 3 cc. of a dilute solution of gold chloride are poured over it, two or three shakes of the tube suffice to remove all the gold from the solution. The color of the solution changes from yellow to pale green, showing that copper is dissolved simultaneously with the precipitation of metallic gold. If a piece of chalcocite is hung in a dilute aqueous solution of silver sulphate (1 normal), a coating of silver begins immediately to form on the mineral, and within a few moments a beautiful silver tree has developed, similar to that formed when metallic zinc is immersed in a similar solution.

WHEN sulfur is encountered in objectionable amounts, it is regarded as the most trouble-some element for the mine operator to control. It exists in two conditions in iron ores, as sulfide in iron pyrites and as sulfate in gypsum and barite. The sulfate radical (SO,) may also be linked to one or more of the several other elements found in the iron ore compound. The only dependable method for the de-termination of sulfur, particularly when found in the insoluble residue, has been the so-called fusion method. This is a long and tedious process involving several hours for its completion. In looking for a more rapid method which would be .applicable to all iron ores, the writer investigated the work of M. Groger1 who in 1881 showed that by heating pyrite with iron out of contact with air, the pyrite is reduced to iron sulfide and from the latter all of the sulfur will be given off as hydrogen sulfide gas on treat-ment with hydrochloric acid. FeS2 + Fe = 2 FeS FeS + 2 HCl = FeC12 + H2S In 1891 F. P. Treadwell2 not only confirmed the results of M. Groger but also found that iron powder would reduce to sulfide the sulfate radical of any substance, including barite, if not found in excessive quantities. The writer found this to be true and developed a method, in cooperation with F. J. Baker, chief chemist, mining department, of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Ishpeming, Mich., for the determination of sulfur in iron ores which is not only very rapid but also accurate. Pure iron ore powder, reduced by hydrogen, gave good results but was found to be very slow in reacting. A high silicon iron with a low sulfur content of 0.012 per cent was found to be. much more active than the pure iron and gave excellent results.
