Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the US with more than 73 kt/d (80,000 stpd) treated in this way. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automated control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. The primary reason is that instruments have not been available for the online measurement of carbon ash content or other critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence operating variables have on coal flotation are not completely understood. During the last few years, some of the needed instrumentation has been developed, while an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling. As a result, certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, Dynafloat. After construction of a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables were analyzed. To develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, it was necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known, final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy that uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

9.5-1. Introduction. The use of pipelines to transport solids has been successfully accomplished with many different materials. One of the oldest applications is the dredging and placing of hydraulic fill. Many installations have been made and operated for long periods of time with excellent dependability, low operating cost, and low maintenance. It is not the aim of this chapter to give the engineer the answers from which to design a pipeline, but rather to supply helpful information from which to start the project. There are several phases of solids pipelining which as yet have not lent themselves to quick engineering answers. Investigations have been carried on by many, with several theories advanced by the various investigators. In recent years certain notable theoretical advances in hydraulic transportation have been achieved. Vertical transport, using balanced "leg" operation, now appears competitive with other forms of vertical transportation. In addition, horizontal transport utilizing capsules has been proven experimentally to be attractive because of lower pressure drop than the conventional methods of solid transport in fluid media. With the aid of the computer, the laborious calculations associated with pumping calculations have been greatly simplified; and with this tool the pipeline engineers of the future will undoubtedly be able to develop a more comprehensive understanding of solids-fluid transport. 9.5-2. Theory. There have been many excellent studies made and information is available in the literature, but a general comprehensive theory of pipeline transportation of solids has not been advanced. The existing flow theories will give approximations for minimum and optimum flow velocities, friction head losses, energy requirements, and pump and pipe size The principles of dynamic similarity and scaling laws are well understood for the flow of pure liquids. There are no firm methods of scaling slurry pipelines of small diameter to larger diameters except for a few empirical.

Vermiculite is a nonmetallic mineral of the mica family, probably related to biotite mica. Its occurrence has been noted at numerous places in the United States and in some foreign countries, but it can be said that vermiculite is of only moderately wide distribution. A laboratory and field survey of over 60 deposits in the United States by F. 1;. Schundler & Co., of Joliet, Ill., indicates that the purest deposit represented in this survey is on the property of the Zonolite Company at Libby, Montana The Zonolite Company is commercially active and the vermiculite it produces is sold as Zonolite. Hereafter, in this report, the word "Zonolite " will be used to designate the vermiculite produced by the Zonolite Company. Values given herein to Zonolite are peculiar to the vermiculite produced from the Zonolite Company's deposits. References to " vermicullite," are to he interpreted as covering the broad field covered by the Schundler survey. Composition and Characteristics of Vermiculite Vermiculite is an aluminum-nmgnesium silicate. The following typical analysis is published by the United States Bureau of Standards: silica, 41 per cent; iron oxide, 7; aluminum oxide, 18; magnesium oxide, 21; calcium oxide, 1; alkalis (sodium and potassium), 1; moisture, 11. Vermiculite breaks down into platelike formation in crushing and grinding operations. Its cleavage is basal. Crude, screened, dry Zonolit,e weighs between 80 and 90 Ib. per cubic foot; its specific gravity is 2.8 and its specific heat is approximately 2. The fusion point of Zonolit'e is 2462" F. Crude vermiculite contains between 7 and 9 per cent of chemically combined moisture. The instantaneous introduction of crude Zonolite into an expansion furnace at a temperature of between 1800" and 2000" F. transforms the combined moisture into steam, which in an effort to liberate itself forces all explosive expansion of the platelike crude material

Single stage autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore was selected by Broken Hill South Ltd., parent Company of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. for the concentrator to treat 60,000 tons per four weekly period of copper and complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide ores from the C.S.A. Mine at Cobar, Australia. Ore is mined by mechanised horizontal cut-and-fill stoping and is prepared for grinding by crushing under- ground in a 60 in. x 48 in. jaw-crusher set at 5 in. closed side setting. The ore is reduced to 80% minus 76 microns in two parallel sections each of one 22 ft. dim. x 7 ft. long autogenous grinding mill, powered by a 1,250 H.P. motor, operating in closed circuit with a single stage 20 in. dim. cyclone. Broken Hill South's original concept of the concentrator required the maximum use of reliable instrumentation, centralised control, and the minimum of manning. To achieve this objective the control room, housing the process recorders, alarms, closed circuit television monitors and all the control equipment, overlooks the grinding and flotation sections, and the whole plant is serviced by a public address system. The grinding units and associated equipment are located in the open and are serviced with the aid of a mobile crane and a mobile hydraulically-operated liner lifting device.

As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except .conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.

THE influence of various elements in retarding or accelerating the absorption of carbon during the process of carburization is fairly well known. In general those elements which forth carbides accelerate the absorption, while those which do not retard it. It has sometimes been wrongly stated that those elements which raise the temperature of the critical range increase the absorption, while those which lower this temperature decrease it. Silicon is a notable exception to this rule, for its influence is to raise the critical range but to lower the absorption of carbon. Some elements which do not form carbides have no apparent influence upon the absorption rate. Carbon itself retards the absorption rate. With a view to obtaining more exact data upon the subject the following experiments were undertaken : 208 steels of different chemical composition were selected to represent most of the types of modern constructional steels. Specimens 3 in. in diameter and in. in length were weighed to milligrams. They were then packed in the special carburizing box shown in Fig. 1, and kept in .the furnace for 10 hours at a temperature of 900° C. A duplicate experiment was conducted at 1,000° C. At equal' intervals of time the box was rotated in the furnace so that. two complete revolutions were made in the 10 hours. This precaution was taken to neutralize as much as possible any effect of unequal heating. At the end of the 10 hours the box was allowed to cool in the furnace with the doors open. The specimens were then weighed again and the increased weight (carbon) determined. In. the following table are given the analyses of the various steels, together with the. increased weight of .carbon expressed in milligrams.

The electrolytic copper refining process is an excellent method for producing high-purity metal for electric conductors and other demanding applications. However, the process involves very high capital expenditure, especially the amounts of metals bound in the process. Efforts have therefore been made for many years to increase the production rate by increasing the current density, without impairing the quality of the copper. One of the approaches has been to diminish the polarization by mechanical means, while another was to "polish" the cathode surface by periodic brief reversals of the current. Reversed current electrolysis was first developed for electro- plating purposes and in 1952 Boliden AB and the Dept. of Electrochemistry at the Royal Inst. of Tech., Stockholm tested the method for copper refining with good results. However, no suitable electrical equipment for current reversal was then available. The thyristor-controlled silicon rectifier became available during the '60s and provided the scope for industrial application of the process and the first large-scale development was made by the Bulgarian copper refinery in Pirdop. Many copper refineries are now studying or adapting the reverse current process. Further lab and pilot investigations have been carried out at Boliden AB during the past 4 years and these were mainly aimed at studying the optimization of factors influencing the quality of copper. A production unit containing two tank sections with a total of 56 cells and equipped with a rectifier for cur- rent reversal has been installed and will be started during 1973.

BEFORE discussing the relation between air pre-heaters and waste-heat boilers in conjunction with the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to have a clear idea about what a preheater can accomplish and what effect it has on the open-hearth furnace, especially from a thermal point of view. It is generally recognized now that the heating of the combustion air in the checker chambers of the open-hearth furnaces is not as efficient as it is-desirable to make it. It is also generally recognized that heating of the air in checker chambers of ordinary construction has its limitations. These limitations are mostly the .space occupied and the cost that would be involved if checker chambers were made larger than according to present practice. There are, however, other. reasons why checker chambers cannot give the highest possible air temperatures. Checker chambers are capable of heating air to very 'high temperatures by using waste gases of extremely high temperatures and, in fact, higher temperatures can be reached with checker chambers than with any other means available. The temperature to which we can heat, air, however, is limited very materially by -the temperature at which the air enters the checkers, be-cause of the fact that checker chambers, as at present constructed, are not efficient in heating air through a wide range of temperatures. In other words, if air in-stead of entering the checker chambers at atmospheric temperatures could enter at about 1000 to 1200 deg. F., the resultant air temperature at the top of the checker chambers would be materially increased. There are now on the market metallic air preheaters which are ex-tremely efficient for preheating air to about 1200 deg. F. Such heaters occupy very little space and can usually be installed at a relatively low cost.

The following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. Purpose of the Intelligence Tests Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment' or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby; 7. In the early recognition of the mentally slow as contrasted with the stubborn or disobedient; 8. In the discovery of men whose low-grade intelligence renders them either a burden or a menace to the service.

This paper is a revision of a former paper published in mimeograph form by both the Canadian and American coal classification committees, and is now presented for the purpose of acquainting those interested with the present status of coal classification in Canada. The classification employed for "Customs purposes" is detailed, and the classification schemes from which the customs classification was derived are reviewed and discussed. The activities of the Canadian coal classification committee, namely, the Associate Committee of Coal Classification and Analysis of the National Research Council, is also reviewed. Reserves, Production and Uses of Canadian Coals The total coal resources of North America are estimated to be 69 per cent. of those of the world, and of this portion, the distribution is 52 per cent. for the United States and 17 per cent. for Canada. Accordingly, Canadian coal resources amount to approximately one-third of those of the United States, and one-sixth of those of the world. As for the geographical distribution, the bulk of the known coal deposits are in the extreme eastern and western portions of the country. Employing the usual, more or less loosely defined, designations for the different classes and subclasses of coal, the distribution of the Canadian coal resources, according to provinces, is as follows: Maritime Provinces: Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Bituminous and semibitu- minous coals. Ontario (northern part).............................Lignite. Saskatchewan, (and Manitoba)....................... Lignite. Alberta and British Columbia........................ Lignites, subbituminous, all kinds of bituminous, semibituminous and semianthracite coals. During the past three decades an ever increasing number of uses for underground storage space has been developed. In some instances, the value of the space created has been so great that the host rock has been wasted. The preferential use of salt to host underground cavities is based on numerous factors, the primary two being low extraction costs and low permeability. Both dry and solution mined cavities have been created for the storage of a variety of materials. As the demand for underground storage and disposal grows, so must our selectivity of the materials to be stored.

EACH metal has a unique combination of properties that distinguishes it from other metal;. Su& a combination may account for applications that cannot be met very well by anything else. This is particularly true of tin, one of the earliest metals used by man. Table i shows the consumption of tin in the United States by usage for the years 1949 and 1950, which may be considered to be generally typical of current usage. The major applications-tinplate, solders, bronze, and babbitt-were well established a century ago. Applications for the metal and (probably later) of tin alloys started more than 5000 years ago. Fortunately for the ancients, tin is one of the metals whose oxide is easily reduced by carbon. Nature further simplified the refining problem by providing only one ore of commercial importance, cassiterite (SnO2). Tin is easily reduced from cassiterite. All that is necessary is high heat in the presence of carbon. It is quite possible that back in the dawn of history, tin was discovered when black alluvial sand was thrown on a fire, either to bank it or to put it out. SOURCES OF TIN All the important tin-producing centers are in the southern hemisphere, far away from the' industrial consuming centers. Fig 1 shows their location and 1950 production. ON May 16, 1871, twenty-two men met in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers.* If we could transport ourselves back to that year and survey the state of science and technology in general, and, in particular, the field of our immediate interest-nonferrous metals-we would feel a justifiable pride in what had been accomplished up to that time. These accomplishments in the metal field were at the moment in the process of documentation by an Englishman, J. A. Phillips, in a new 700-page edition of his book to be published in 1874 under the title of "Elements of Metallurgy." True, looking over his shoulder, we would smile to read that "all metals are capable of assuming a crystalline form under favorable conditions," and that tensile testing is done "by adding weights to a firmly suspended wire until it fractures," and we would find only three pages on aluminum and none on magnesium. We would, however, find an astonishing wealth of detailed knowledge on iron and steel and the then common nonferrous metals and alloys such as brass and bronze. For a long time I have believed that the gas- and brick-costs of open-hearth furnaces using prodncer-gas could be greatly decreased by a change in the design of the port, which would materially reduce the first-cost of the furnace, the rebuilding-cost, and the repair-cost. The defects of the present type of such furnaces, which has clone duty for so many years, may be studied in Fig. 1, in which A A are the two air-uptakes, B is the gas-uptake, and C the end of the gas-port. In the present type of furnace, C is practically 011 the edge of the bath and therefore combustion begins to take place at that point, but has no effect until the gas passes from 5 to 10 ft. into the hearth. As the furnace grows older, C moves back by reason of the burning or falling down of the arch. The furnace reaches its highest efficiency when C has moved a certain distance, but is still near enough to the bath for the overhead layer of air to hold the gas down on the bath, and far enough back to permit combustion to take place at some distance from the bath. This latter fact means that the temperature is sufficient to melt steel at the edge of the port. From this time on, the furnace decreases in efficiency. What is the reason ? As C moves further hack, the gas is released from the gas-port at a point where there is little or no overhead layer of air. The result is that the gas floats along the roof, with the air mostly underneath it. Why the air does not stay over the gas is readily seen in Fig. 1. The lines of draft naturally run parallel to the length of the furnace. The air-uptakes being on the sides and the gas-port in the middle, most of the air will naturally be drawn along the sides of the furnace and the layer of air will be thinnest over the gas, where it is most needed.

Not much more is known about concrete today than was known to the Romans. For all the research only better tools have resulted to measure the quality of the materials that go into it." In this paper "some of the materials for lightweight concrete and their characteristics are considered and effort is made to indicate their effect on the end result — a structure of lightweight concrete." Lightweight concrete had noble beginnings. It is believed that the first specification for lightweight concrete was written by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the early years of his reign, 117-138 AD. Hadrian, was an engineer by trade and an Emperor by adoption. He took considerable interest in the structures sponsored during his reign, even to the point of working out the structural details and preparing working drawings for some of the more prominent works in the vicinity of Rome. In order to reduce the dead weight of the 140 ft diam dome of the Pantheon he specified that the lightweight structural concrete members supporting this concrete and tile composite dome were to be fabricated from a concrete containing pumice and scoria. Still standing after 18 centuries of abuse, this structure has been described as the master effort of a great structural genius, the ultimate achievement of Roman engineering skill.' The Romans were the first to employ many concrete techniques we think of as modem innovations. Some unnamed superintendent noted that when a carefully measured amount of pigs blood was measured into each batch of concrete during mixing, the concrete was more durable and exhibited much better resistance to freezing and thawing climates. He no doubt, attributed this success to the appeasement of one of the gods who in return provided protection for the building containing this sacrificial offering in its walls. It is known today that the blood-entrained air in the concrete tends to make mixtures more workable, resistant to moisture penetration and more resistant to frost damage.

ALL the domestic. production of magnesite during 1925 came from two states, California and Washington. Of a total of 120,660 tons of crude ore, 64,600 tons, or 54 per cent., were produced in California.1 Of .this quantity California produced about 99 per cent. of the caustic calcined, but only 10 per cent. of the dead-burned. The largest producer was C. S. Maltby, of San Francisco, who operated the Red Mountain mine, in Santa Clara County, and the Sampson mine, in San Benito County, under lease. These two mines have been studied by the author, and offer interesting comparisons as to mining and treatment methods and final products. GEOLOGY The general geology of the magnesite deposits of California has been described by Hess,2 Bain3 and others,4 and although a detailed discussion is not necessary here, a brief summary will assist in understanding mining conditions. California magnesite, when comparatively pure, is usually a white, fine-grained rock, with a conchoidal fracture, occurring in veins and lense-like masses in serpentine. The veins vary considerably in width, and usually occur in a series of more or less parallel veins intersected by other series or systems of veins, probably following original or secondary fissures in the enclosing serpentine. The most generally accepted theory of origin is that the magnesite was formed by the action of surface waters charged with C02 percolating downward through fissures and changing the magnesium silicates of the serpentine into magnesium carbonate.

Much attention has been directed to mine-air flow in recent years, more especially in Great Britian where there is frequent reference to a theory of fluid flow developed by English engineers. Briefly stated, this theory is that for similar passages of the same relative roughness, in which fluid flow occurs, the conditions of flow are exactly the same for W D V equal values of the product where W = density of the fluid, D = diameter of the passage through which flow occurs, V = mean velocity of flow, and p = absolute viscosity of the fluid flowing. This, the "Reynolds Criterion" of fluid flow, had its origin in the work of Reynolds1 more than 40 years ago. Later, Rayleigh2 amplified the theory which has been conclusively proved for small pipes by the experiments of Stanton and Panne13 over a large flow range, and by Lacey4 over a somewhat more limited range. Concordant results on small pipes have also been obtained by numerous other investigators with single fluids over more or less limited ranges of flow. According to this theory, results in one medium, such as water, are immediately applicable to another, such as air; and experimental results on models are (theoretically, at least) applicable to full-scale designs. This is of great importance in aeronautics and can be of considerable value in mine ventilation research. Hodgson, in a recent paper,6 has outlined the application of this theory to mine-air flow and recent English experiments6 on the resistance of a timbered mine airway have been expressed in this form.

The Jeffrey Company Opens Branch in Seattle The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, announces the re-opening of its Northwestern Branch Office at Seattle, Wash., and the appointment of Mr. Percy E. Wright, Consulting Mechanical Engineer, as District Manager for Oregon, Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. Mr. Wright, who has been in the Northwest since 1910, and whose connection with the Jeffrey company dates back to 1902, has' had a wide and varied experience and training in the handling of the Jeffrey line which will enable him to be of great assistance to customers in solving their elevating, conveying and transmission problems. Trade Catalogs To a majority of the public, the name 'DuPont suggests military powder-munitions of war. The DuPont Products Book A-430 (April, 1916) lists 251 distinct commodities made. and sold by this company, many of which are far removed from destructive work. Mining men are fully cognizant of the need for explosives in constructive work, but they may be surprised to know that side by side with the powder and dynamite this company manufactures such peaceful articles as substitute leather, combs and collar buttons. The substitute for leather is Fabrikoid, varying in weight from a quality light enough for bookbinding to one heavy enough for trunks and automobiles, and the combs and collar buttons (with scores of other articles) are made from Pyralin. The book also contains a long list of chemicals, and a shorter list of special products and miscellaneous materials such as charcoal, wood flour and saltpeter. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, making elevating, conveying, crushing, screening and power transmission machinery, has just issued its. latest Bulletin, No. 177, :featuring self-propelling wagon and truck loaders for handling crushed stone, sand, gravel, clinker, coke, etc. These machines are described as having a capacity of 1 to 1 ½ cu. yd. of material per minute, with power to load crushed stone maximum size pieces through 3 ½ -in. ring and to load trucks or wagons in 3 or 4 min. The self-propelling device is designed to enable one man to operate the loader as it is fed into the pile, and to move the machine about under its own power.

Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. Lawrence Austin, of this Institute, who had experimented at Toston, Montana,"
