The process to be described, whatever other merits (or demerits) it may have possessed, certainly proved a financial success under the conditions of the locality where it was introduced and where a refining process had been sought previously in vain. I have ventured to bring it to the notice of the Institute in the hope that it may prove of some interest as a solution of a practical problem, such as is often presented to the metallurgist in the remote mining regions of the West. The method was used first at the Lyon Mill at Dayton, Nevada, and has been adopted at other tailings-mills on the Cornstock. These mills treat two classes of tailings: "sand," or; material which has passed previously through the pans of the ore-mills; and " slimes," or the fine clayey material which, coming from the battery, is too light to settle in the tanks inside of the mills but is

THIs paper brings forward a discussion that was prepared for the meeting of the Coal Division in Chicago in 1938.1 War in Europe less than a year after that meeting, followed by our defense preparations and entry into the conflict, caused general cessation of large-scale experimentation on the subject, and it is best to confine this paper to events in the United States during the five-year period since the preceding paper was written. The views of members of the Coal Division's Committee2 on Rock-dust-ing for 1943 were obtained before this paper was written and the manuscript was reviewed by them. Extent of Rock-dusting Statistics on the use of rock dust in the United States during the years 1930-1933, appearing on page 97 of Volume 139 of the Transactions are extended in Table I herein through the year 1941. The results through 1933 did not appear encouraging, but there has been improve-ment since that date. It has always been true that the larger operations were the ones that used rock dust. In 1941 only 10 per cent of the mines in the country used rock dust, but they produced 57 per cent of the coal, employed just under 50 per cent of the miners, and accounted for 52 per cent of the man-hours. Unfortunately, collection and compilation of these statistics are slow procedures, and figures dealing with the tremendous war expansion of the industry are not likely to be available for a year or more. In 1941 the five leading states in regard to percentage of man-hours worked in mines using rock dust were: Utah, 92.1; Wyoming, 79.3; Alabama, 77.4; New Mexico, 72.5; West Virginia, 65.3. The year 1954 witnessed great activity in the field of geology as applied to mining. The search for in nearly all districts is becoming more and more intensified as established reserves are being depleted. Much geologic work has been directed to finding extensions of known orebodies, but prospecting in new areas has constituted a large part of the program of many operators. The acute need for additional reserves has brought into the search all the tools known to the geologic profession. This is reflected directly by frequent references to geophysical and geochemical methods in the regional reviews that follow. The lone prospector of the early days of metal mining has been eliminated almost completely by modern scientific methods involving surface and subsurface geology, exploratory drilling, geophysics, and geochemistry. Nearly all new exploration is based on long-range programs coupled with studies of regional geology to determine the structural environment of areas of mineralization. The success of this approach has encouraged new operators in the field of exploration to adopt similar policies. Only in the search for uranium ores is the individual prospector still active, but the familiar picture of the burro heavily loaded with grubstake, gold pan, and pick and shovel has been replaced by the Geiger counter and the scintillometer carried by hand, by truck, or by airplane.

The Anaconda Company, an organization of mining people, enters a new world of copper production as it brings on stream its recently constructed Twin Buttes operation some 25 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. Twin Buttes comprises the largest earth-moving task performed in the history of mining. Some people liken this job to moving enough earth and rock to complete the famed Aswan High Dam in Egypt. In all, some 236 million tons of overburden and rock were removed from over the ore deposit.

Gasoline is undoubtedly of major importance not only to the petroleum refiner but to the producer. To study the economic aspects of gasoline is, in a measure, a constructive effort to solve the problem of overproduction not only for the refiner but for the entire petroleum industry. After all, the prime object of producing crude petroleum is to supply motor fuel and lubricants to nearly 25,000,000 American motor vehicles, not to mention the increasing demand for these products abroad. Since gasoline furnishes the chief source of revenue to the refiner, it follows that this important product should veritably become recognized by all branches of the petroleum industry as an almost infallible index of day to day requirements of the producer and the refiner. A careful study of gasoline statistics over the past decade or more reveals that there is a definite correlation between world-wide gasoline requirements and the demand for crude petroleum, as well as all other petroleum products. This leads the writer to the conclusion that gasoline is literally the economic yardstick of the entire petroleum industry. Control of Operations That the refiner has begun to recognize the urgent need for controlling his operations is evidenced by the results of the past three years. Unfortunately, it is a difficult problem to convince the refiner that he cannot run crude in excess of the demand for gasoline, without incurring a consequent decline in the market value of this and all other products of distillation. Undoubtedly, he still has much to learn in this respect. Few commercial products have enjoyed such phenomenal growth in demand as has gasoline, and, at the same time, few products have failed, as has gasoline, to reap financial benefit from the popular demand for a national necessity. Perhaps this unprecedented demand was responsible for the overextension of retining facilities, which resulted in the excesses of recent times; at any rate, as the demand for gasoline grew by leaps and bounds, so the refining industry continued to increase its capacity for

"The Rockets' Red Glare" of the Fourth of July is produced by strontium compounds. However, strontium has a number of less spectacular uses; i.e. in, or in connection with, the manufacture of ceramics, caustic soda, glass, railway and truck signal flares, beet sugar and steel. The principal ore of strontium for use both as the mineral and for production of compounds is celestite (SrSO4). This mineral varies in color from white to pink or blue depending on presence of impurities. It has a hardness of about 3.5 and specific gravity of 3.9. It is brittle and has perfect basal and prismatic cleavages. The high grade ore is obtained from England, hence it has become the standard for all other producing areas. (See analyses, Table 1.) The most objectionable impurity in English celestite is iron, coming mostly from adhering clay. On the other hand, Mexican celestite, while no higher in strontium sulfate content, is extremely low in iron (less than 0.2 pct), hence it is more desirable for certain uses. Most of the celestite in Spain and in the United States is high in calcium and barium, and commonly high in iron, and requires some form of beneficiation in order to be equal to English ore. The natural carbonate (SrCO3), or strontianite, is less important than celestite as a source of strontium, because it is less abundant and is not so widespread in its occurrence. Furthermore, it generally occurs with calcite (CaCO3) and lead sulfide (PbS), and for most uses these impurities are detrimental. This mineral is generally white or yellowish, forming needle-like crystals. It has a hardness of about 3.7 and a specific gravity of 3.68-3.8. The mineral is brittle and has an imperfect cleavage. A typical analysis of German strontianite is shown in Table 1. [ ] Distribution of Deposits UNITED STATES Occurrences of strontium minerals are known in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Celestite occurs in the Vulture Mountains, Maricopa County, Arizona in beds three to ten feet thick associated with sandstone, gypsum, and barite. Because of the low strontium content, approximately 86 pct SrSO4, it has no commercial value. A large deposit of celestite occurs in San Bernardino County, California, in the Cady Mountains near Argus Station, about eight miles west of Ludlow. THE most important factors that should be given consideration in valuation of oil land are: (1) the amount of oil the property will produce; (2) the amount of money this oil will bring (based upon the future prices of oil) ; (3) development and production costs; (4) the rate of interest on the investment; (5) the retirement or amortization of invested capital; and (6) the salvage or "scrap" value of the equipment when the property is exhausted. These factors are of varying importance, and some of them may not enter all valuation problems, but most of them should be given consideration in any valuation even though only a rough estimate of the value of the property is desired. The value of a property may be changed over-night by the completion of important test wells, by the sudden water flooding, or by a change in the price of oil. The best a petroleum engineer can give is the value of the property under the conditions existing at the time the appraisal is made with a fair forecast of future action of the wells and of the price of oil. Our experience in the scientific valuation of oil lands is not broad and there is very little published information on the subject; it, therefore, becomes necessary in studying such problems to form comparisons with the factors involved in the valuation of mines-the closest parallel. One of the reasons for the lack of substantial progress in oil-land valuation methods has been the necessity of making an estimate of the future production of the oil property to be valued. Oil men and accountants have not generally conceded that such estimates could be made with any degree of accuracy. It has been shown, however, in several recent publications that with certain data available reasonably close estimates can be made. The accuracy of an appraisal depends chiefly on the accuracy of the estimates of future production and of the future price of oil. The accuracy of the former is sometimes necessarily based on geological inferences. Geology is not an exact science and geological data in connection with oil production cannot always be mathematically evaluated.

The Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailcd results of tests on four typical samples. Mineralogy of Batjxite The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2HzO). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (AlzOa.3H20), diaspore (A120a.H20), and boehmite (Alr-03.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2Hz0). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. History of Batjxite Beneficiatjon The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaneyl and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. Their work has also developed reagent combinations that are satisfactory for flotation of gibbsite.

A FEW metals have been known since the dawn of history. Many have been prepared in quantity only within the present century. Zinc falls into an intermediate category, although there is some evidence of its existence in elemental form in Greece as early as the third or fourth century B.C. Nevertheless, the first important use of zinc antedates the earliest records of civilization. This first use was in the alloy, brass, which is roughly one third zinc. This continues to the present time as one of the major uses of the metal. The first production of brass, in light of present knowledge, was perhaps one of the 'most romantic and fortuitous of technical discoveries. Copper, the major constituent of brass, had been given to man by Nature in the native state; that is, as lumps of fairly pure copper. The art of melting and working it had been learned. But zinc does not occur as the metal in Nature and even if some early metallurgist happened to heat zinc ore with a reducing agent, the reduced metallic zinc passed off as vapor and was lost. Doubtless some early coppersmith, melting copper in accidental contact with zinc ore, reduced the zinc, and the vapor was absorbed by the molten copper. Its color, hardness, and other properties were thus wonder- fully changed. And so the earliest metallic form of zinc, as nearly as we can deduce, existed in the alloy brass. THIS is a story of a mine discovered in the days of the Conquistadores but that remained unimportant until the second decade of this century. Without the usual legendary history of romance and fabulous riches it has become famous for the development of unexpected metals and unusual problems. These developments and experiences, exciting and interesting as any legend, are the substance of the San Antonio mine of the Santa Eulalia district in northern Mexico. Originally opened for its silver-lead content, it developed a tin deposit of singular economic importance and unique geologic interest, a vanadium orebody that for a few years placed it among the leading vanadium producers of the world, and now lead and zinc sulphide ores. It has been the seem of a disastrous flood that brought deep-sea divers into Mexico's desert mountains and raised important problems regarding ground water, demanding unusual measures. Geology and operating questions relating to the above matters will be discussed and much of it is recent history which has become a part of Mexican mining lore. History Dates Back to 1325 Santa Eulalia is the oldest of American cities, founded in 1325 by the Aztecs under the name of Tenochtitlan and devastated in 1521 by Cortes and his rapacious band of iron-willed adventurers. Their lust for gold burned through the Aztec empire and onward into most of North America. Santa Eulalia was in the path of conquest. In 1591 the district's first ore discovery was made near what is now the San Antonio mine. The ores carried no gold and the silver-lead content was unattractive to the early pioneers. Not until 1700 was real mining activity undertaken.

There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occurring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, Calif. recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Solar evaporation is always desirable, because of low costs, however artificial evaporation may be economical if a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case for the American Potash operations at Trona. Solar evaporation is limited by low working temperatures, which in most areas of the world is between 18 and 45°C. In many cases the average working temperature is about 25°C. However, solar evaporation will have to accommodate itself to the highs and lows of each 24 hour period, and to the different average temperatures during the months of the year. Therefore, solar evaporation, although more economical than artificial evaporation, has a tem- perature limit which greatly reduces the chances of its application. The feasibility of solar evaporation as a means of recovery of values from a particular brine, may be evaluated by the use of phase diagrams showing the several components present. This paper is restricted to the five component system: C1-, SO4=, Na+, K+, Mg++, and H2O, which correspond to brines found at Wendover, Utah, the Great Salt Lake, and sea water bitterns. THE BONNEVILLE OPERATION AT WENDOVER, UTAH For more than 25 years Bonneville, Ltd., now a division of Standard Magnesium and Chemical Co. (recently acquired by Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.), has been recovering potassium chloride from the brines found in the desert area just east of Wendover, Utah. Solar evaporation of the brines is possible as a consequence of relatively low precipitations (year average: 4.8 in.), and of dry and hot summer months. The brine, collected by a series of approximately 67 mi. of ditches crossing the desert, is fed into solar evaporation ponds. Evaporation which takes place from around the middle of May to about the end of September, permits the crystallization of approximately 90% of the originally present NaCl on what is called the "General Pond Area". The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, are the raw material base for Rana Mines, a division of the state-owned A/S Norsk Jernverk steel mill. The iron bearing minerals are magnetite and specular hematite. The magnetite/hematite ratio varies considerably both within each deposit and from one deposit to another. The ore bodies that lend themselves to mining have generally a thickness of 30-60 m grading 30-35% Fe and 0.15-0.25% P. The grain size varies from 0.05 to 2.5 mm. The fine grained ores are hard while the coarse grained ores are soft and easy to grind. The A/S Norsk Jernverk steel mill operates both a sinter and a pellet plant, and this necessitates production of two types of concentrates. The present flowsheet is shown in [Fig. 1]. The crude ore from the pits is crushed in a 1.07-m gyratory crusher with an open side setting of 12.7 cm. The crusher product is transported by rail to the concentrator located 25 km from the mines. The ore is fed by twelve 1.22 X 1.83 m vibratory feeders onto conveyor belts which carry the ore to a surge bin ahead of the autogenous mills. The feed rate is automatically adjusted to maintain a set power load at a level suitable for the ore type being processed. The mills operate in closed circuit with twelve dual-drum screens equipped with a 0.8-mm screen cloth. Oversize is returned by gravity to the mill feed while undersize flows to the gravity separation section which consists of Humphrey spirals in three stages. The ores are very heterogenous and analysis may vary quite considerably. The quantitative need for concentrate in the steel mill may also change rapidly. The process in the concentrator must therefore be easily changed, and consequently alternative process lines have been established. This is indicated with the dotted lines in the flowsheet. Apatite is removed by flotation by fatty acids to give a final sinter concentrate of 63% Fe and 0.020% P or less. Pellet concentrate contains about 65% Fe and less than 0.020% P. The fineness is about 1500 Blain.

COMMERCIAL processes of lead softening directly involve the behavior on fusion of mixtures of the oxides of antimony and lead, and the vapor pressures of these materials. Practically no quantitative data have been available for the discussion of lead softening from the point of view of the fundamental metallurgy of the process. The Pacific Experiment Station -of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of California, in the course of its program of study of the fundamental properties of oxides and sulfides, recently made vapor pressure measurements upon the various forms of pure antimony trioxide.1 When these measurements were considered in connection with the softening and "fuming" furnaces which are often used for lead purification, an unexpectedly anomalous condition appeared. In brief, this anomaly consisted in the fact that in certain softening furnaces, where lead bullion of approximately 1 per cent antimony content was being treated at a temperature of approximately 1300° F., no appreciable volatilization of antimony occurred, there being produced only a "skim" containing from 15 to 20 per cent Sb, 65 to 60 per cent Pb, as mixed oxides. In the "fuming furnaces," where the temperature was only about 1400° F. and where an accumulation of "skims" from the primary softener was being treated with certain other antimony-containing materials, a considerable volatilization of antimony as oxide occurred; an "impure" skim of some 60 to 65 per cent Sb and 10 per cent Pb was also produced as mixed oxides. The latter material cannot be suitably treated in hearth-type or softener furnaces. The essential chemical difference between the first and second step is the customary use of some reducing material (such as petroleum coke) in the later operation. An obvious interpretation of the effect of coke in facilitating the fuming of the antimony is the supposition that the antimony may be reduced to metal, and volatilized as such. This supposition is improbable, however, when it is realized that a slight extrapolation of the vapor-

AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi-gation of the mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the spring of 1934. Prof. G. W. MAYNARD, New York City (communication to the Secretary): Prof. Christy, in his admirable paper on "The Growth of American Mining Schools," has overlooked the work done by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in its department of mining and metallurgy. This oversight is naturally due to the fact that the department was, for lack of money, discontinued in 1871. It was organized by the writer in 1867, starting with ten students, who had already completed the first two years of the civil engineering course in the Institute. The course covered two years, specifically devoted to mining, metallurgy and assaying, which, in connection with the two years' drill in the civil engineering department made a four years' course. During the four years of the existence of the department, thirty-five students took the course, of whom twentyfive graduated; and of this number eight have been members of the Institute of Mining Engineers, and the majority of them have occupied high positions in the profession. The equipment of the department was, at that time, second only to that of the Columbia School of Mines. As Prof. Christy has cited other institutions which are not distinctively mining schools, but in which the ruining course was subordinate to other courses, it seems to me that the work in this line carried out by the oldest engineering school in the country may very properly be referred to. In addition to the regular mining course, a special course in assaying was given; and many young men were here prepared for positions in the mines and metallurgical works of the west. PROF. George F. Swain, Boston, Mass.: I have listened with great interest to Prof. Christy's valuable paper, but there is one conclusion at which he arrives that appears to me entirely unjustifiable, and to which I desire to take exception. Prof. Christy finds that of the total wage-earners in the United States in 1880,10.41 per cent. were employed in " trade and transport;" 20.24 per cent. in " manufactures and mechanics," and 1.83

PEoperly designed tubing strings make it possible to continue the flowing life of wells beyond the stage where ordinarily they would be put to pumping. Wells no longer able to flow through 2-in. tubing can be made to produce through smaller tubing if conditions within the well are carefully studied and correctly designed strings are installed. In this way, pumping expense may be postponed and in some pools it is within reason that the entire recovery may be obtained by natural flow if maintenance of pressure is practiced. Infrequent tubing changes would be necessary but their cost would be much less than that of installing and maintaining pumping equipment. If small wells are to be made to flow naturally, careful consideration must be given the actual lifting mechanics within the string, so that fairly accurate knowledge of reservoir conditions, especially pressure, is essential. Wells producing between 5 and 25 bbl. daily are classified here as "small wells." Exponential Flow A maximum of the energy contained in the expanding gas must be employed to do useful work if natural flow is to be continued. It is evident that adiabatic expansion would defeat this purpose, therefore the velocity of the gas must be held down to a minimum in order that isothermal expansion may be approached. Of course, true isothermal expansion would not be obtainable in an oil well, hence the use of the term "exponential." 1 Obviously the closer the approach to isothermal expansion, the more efficient the lift. Experiments by the U. 8. Bureau of Mines² have shown that for isothermal expansion to take place in a gas well where water is being produced, a definite relationship exists between the depth of the well and the minimum operating pressure. The latter must be such that the tubing fill-up, if static conditions prevailed, would be equivalent to 14 per cent of the distance between the top of the fluid inside the tubing and the tubing head. The following paper embodies a report which I made on the filter-press treatment of slimes at the Liberty Bell mine, Telluride, Colo. At the time this report was submitted, the management deemed it wiser to defer the installation of so costly a plant as the one required, in the hope that some of the many investigators in the field might soon evolve a cheaper and more perfect method of slimes-treatment, and one better suited to the conditions at Telluride. The Liberty Bell ore consists essentially of quartz and clay, with iron pyrites disseminated through the quartz in very fine particles. There is considerable iron and manganese stain in some of the ore, the latter especially in the clays, which are sometimes quite black. Occasionally particles of galena, zincblende, gray copper and a few other minerals are seen, but they are comparatively rare, and not in sufficient quantity to affect considerations of treatment. Free gold is occasionally seen in the quartz, and one or two instances of mire silver have been observed. The milling-plant consists of an 80-stamp amalgamating mill which crushes through 20-mesh screens; 20 Wilfley concentrating tables, taking out, in iron sulphides, about 2 per cent. of the total ore crushed; and a cyanide plant consisting of two tiers of 33 ft. vats, five in each tier, fed by revolving pipe-die tributers. The slimes overflow from the upper settling tanks through gates with adjustable outlets, and thence to a large canvas-plant, which efects only a small saving. This slimes product, of which about 100 tons escape per day (or 38 per cent. of the total ore crushed), contains about 3 per cent. of dry solids. Of this approximately 93 per cent. will pass a 200-mesh screen. The slimes range in value between $3.90 and $4.87 per ton, the values being about equally distributed between gold and silver. AT the present time, the coal industry is greatly interested in any method or machine that will cut the cost of producing a ton of coal, while at the same time producing a product of quality and grade suitable to the customer. Comparatively new and, as yet, little known, auger mining is proving a profitable method of coal recovery. It may be used for the production of low-cost, high-quality coal with equal success from both the hard-to-mine seams, those with banded impurities and bad roof conditions, and the more easily mined seams as classified according to conventional mining methods. A number of units are now in operation and production information is available that should be of particular interest to coal operators and of general interest to anyone associated with the coal-mining industry. Auger mining refers to coal extraction with large size augers capable of drilling to great depths and having a high capacity. Consideration of the equipment and methods used in drilling an ordinary shot-hole will give a picture of auger mining on a smaller scale. At present, auger mining is used largely for recovery of coal from the highwall after strip mining becomes uneconomical because of the type and the thickness of the overburden which must be moved. Coal augers have many of the advantages of present continuous mining machines, along with many more. The four distinct operations of conventional mining-—cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading— are eliminated and replaced by the combined operation of boring and conveying of the coal. The coal recovery auger is an adaptation of the horizontal rock drill used for drilling shot-holes to shatter and loosen overburden in strip mining operations. During the war the Becker County Sand and Gravel Co. of Summersville, W. Va., experimented with drilling coal with 6 and 9-in. rock augers. The results led to the successive development of the 20, 24, 30 and the 36-in. machines, the latter having appeared in the coal fields within the past six months. Of the several interesting physical properties of clay which have claimed the attention of investigators in recent years, none is more important than the behavior of the material when heated to temperatures above those of dehydration. Some of the problems to be solved are: 1. The mineralogical changes that take place in firing. 2. The relation between temperature and change in constitution, shrinkage, porosity, etc. 3. The importance of the time factor, as duration of firing, either in reaching a given temperature, or of exposure to a constant temperature. Mineralogical Changes As a result of fusion, reactions take place between the constituents of a clay, which result in a reorganization of the mass, and the formation of new compounds. Of the new minerals developed, sillimanite is the one usually recorded, and has been referred to by a number of observers.' There appears to be a difference of opinion, however, regarding the temperature at which it is formed. Thus Klein2 notes that sillimanite forms only above 1300" C., while Mellor claims that it can develop below 1200" C., the difference in results being conditioned by the time factor. In Klein's experiments the test pieces were fired in 12 hr., while in Mel-lor's, the temperature rose from 800" to 1180" in 24 hr., and occupied the same time in cooling back to 800".

IT is well known that one of the cornerstones of economic theory is the so-called law of supply and demand, which, really, is a group of economic laws, one of which may be succinctly stated A rise in price tends, sooner or later, to increase supply. It is the fear that, in the case of petroleum, a limited' natural resource, a point will soon be reached when supply will not respond adequately to price advances, which in recent years has prompted a movement for oil conservation. This movement has lately taken concrete shape in the appointment of 'a Federal Oil Conservation Board by the President. An important aspect of the law of supply and demand is that the supply of any commodity, is not an entity per se, but is a factor of price. Supply, without the specification of, price, has no exact meaning; and, in practice supply cannot be divorced from considerations of price. Mathematically, supply may be expressed by the formula SP, which means that supply varies with price, just as the value of 10 raised to the x power varies with x. In its technical usage, supply is the, quantity of a commodity that is bought currently on the market at a given price. In the case of a natural resource, however, this quantity will eventually depend not alone on price but on the physical volume of the reserve that exists and that, in consequence, can respond to the stimulus of price. If this reserve is fixed in size, we must sooner or later reach a point where supply can no longer respond to price in the usual degree and a permanent shortage will develop which no advance in price can correct, except in so far as higher prices may curtail demand or improve the efficiency of utilization. This statement brings us to the examination of amore fundamental aspect of the law of supply and demand as applied to natural resources; namely, that natural-resource reserves are not fixed in size: just as the current supply of a natural-resource commodity is a function of price, so its reserve is likewise a resultant of price. Natural-resource reserves; therefore, have no exact meaning without the specification of price, and in practice their measurement. cannot be divorced from considerations of
