THE object of this paper is to, describe the several necessary characteristics of the zinc-retorting charge and to show how by certain improved methods; the large excess of coal, over that theoretically required, can be reduced, thereby effecting an increase in the smelting capacity of a retort plant as well as other economies. In the Southwestern zinc works a charge of roasted zinc ore with a side mixture of carbonates and silicates, analyzing on the average 50 per cent. Zn, is mixed with 55 or more per cent. of its weight of a mixture of coal and coke analyzing 60 to 70 per cent. fixed carbon. . The ore is of varying fineness and the coal and coke are usually crushed in a semi-moist condition through a 3/8 -in. screen. With ores of a slaggy nature, this coal proportion is increased, sometimes to as much as 100 per cent. of, the weight of the ore. With carbonate ores, or where anthracite screenings with higher carbon content are cheap enough, the percentage of reducing agent is cut to 45 per cent. or even somewhat lower. The average charge per retort for a monthly run of a plant on ore, as distinguished from retorts on blue-powder, ladle-skimmings and other between-products, runs from 60 to 66 lb., with a mean of 63 lb. for the Southwest with standard retorts of 8 ½ -in. inside diameter and 50 in. long inside, using roasted sulphide ores. Conditions will change these figures, but 40 lb. of ore per cubic foot of retort space is, I believe, an average in the better-operated plants. Since the rise in. the price of spelter, the tendency has been to overcharge. To remove the slag that is formed when retorts are overcharged, extra men are put on to "gum-chisel" the retorts to prevent "set" furnaces and "butchered, retorts." Taking the above conditions as premises, we find that from four to six times the amount of coal necessary for the reduction is used, as is evidenced by the fact that the residues analyze as high as 35 per cent, fixed carbon. There are good reasons why this excess of fixed carbon must be used and perhaps these can be best explained by a description of the metallurgical requisites of a zinc charge. THERE is very little useful material in the litera-ture on the construction of manometers, so each experimenter must devise his own instrument. I have experimented for a number of years and have finally built one that is satisfactory. If we are to obtain accurate friction factors in mine-ventilation problems we must use accurate instruments. The most simple and convenient instrument for the mea-surement of small pressures is the inclined manometer or U-tube. By changing the angle at which the tube is set, any desired magnification of the pressure reading may be obtained. The first question in regard to the manometer is: What liquid shall be used? Alcohol, in my opinion, is the best. It does not cling to the glass and it does not attack the rubber tubes. The next problem is the setting of the instrument at the proper angle. One method is illustrated in Fig. 1. The base plate AC is made horizontal by a level bubble. The plate AB, which carries the U-tube, is hinged at A. The angle z which AB makes with the horizontal may be made any value by pinning the end B at the calculated position on the arm CD. Such an instrument may be designed to read directly in inches of water if a liquid of constant specific gravity is used. If the specific gravity varies, a calculation is necessary to convert the reading into inches of water.

AN intelligent discussion of the oil situation and its needs, whether from the standpoint of the prospector, the operator, the engineer, or the public administrative officer, must be founded upon a knowledge of the law under which oil lands are obtained. A consideration of new legislation must be prefaced by an understanding of the present law and its results. This paper undertakes to present no new remedy for the ills of the present situation, no new solution of the problems the oil business is facing. It attempts merely to summarize the present law, its provisions, its origin, its development, and its effects. The discussion does not pretend to be exhaustive from a legal standpoint. It aims to avoid legal intricacies Which tend to confuse rather than clarify. It seeks but to present the essentials of the existing situation. The title to government lands known to contain valuable deposits of petroleum may be acquired only under the terms of the placer law as embodied in Section 2329 et seq. of the Revised Statutes. As a preliminary to considering the desirability of this situation it is profitable to examine into its origin. ORIGIN OF THE LAW Congress has left no room for doubt as to the legal applicability of the placer law to oil lands. The Act of Feb. 11, 1897 (29 Stat., 526), provides: "that any person authorized to enter lands under the mining laws of the United States may enter and obtain patent to land containing petroleum or other mineral oils, and chiefly valuable therefor, under the provisions of the laws relating to placer mineral claims."

ALUMINUM alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys, exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with tem-perature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative con-sideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators1-5 have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. It was observed that chromized coatings on low carbon steel could be embrittled by cooling slowly through the 475°C range. A higher chromium coating was more susceptible to embrittlement than a lower chromium coating. Coating structure and composition could be correlated with the chromizing process and prior carbon content of the steel. IT was recently observed that during the fabrication of rectangular tubings made with chromized thin gage 1010 steel, a high percentage of these parts were fractured readily in a brittle manner under the light impact-forming load employed. Ensuing investigation indicated the cause for such brittle failures to be the so-called 475°C embrittlement of the chromized coatings. The experimental work and results are briefly reported. Rectangular tube sections of normalized AISI C1010 steel, which had a cross-section of 0.5x1.5 in. and a wall thickness of 0.030 in., were chromized to yield coatings having several ranges of thickness, varying from 0.0005 to 0.002 in. Essentially, the chromizing process is similar to that described by Samuel and Lockington,' which consists of heating the parts in a sealed container at about 955°C for 4 hr in intimate contact with a chromizing mixture* samples in a hydraulic press, and the other employed a simple beam bending test of the flat sides of the tubing walls. Neither, however, was able to differentiate the relative brittleness of samples known to include both the brittle and tough types, since the impact-brittle samples were found to deform readily in a manner similar to the tough ones. Both the tough and brittle samples were studied by reflection microscopy. Observation showed that the microstructures of the steel cores were similar in content and distribution of inclusions as well as in the ferritic grain size. Results of Filar micrometer measurements showed that coating thicknesses+ of the brittle samples averaged 0.0007 in., whereas those of the tough samples averaged 0.0016 in. The micrographs of Fig. 2 illustrate the structural differences between coatings of both types of samples. By dissolving the steel cores in nitric acid, coatings of both the brittle and tough samples were isolated. Simple bending tests showed that coatings of the brittle samples cracked readily at about 90" bend, whereas those of the tough samples could be bent nearly 180° without cracking. In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 19201s, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840’s, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 1850’s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 1860’s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. ALTHOUGH the exclusion of foreigners and private owners from participation in the development of the Russian oil fields prevents first-hand information being obtained, both official and private news indicate a growing appreciation of the value of the country's oil resources. Notwithstanding the suppression of that initiative and energy which only ambition can adequately stimulate, the industry is progressing and exports of products are assuming an importance that cannot be disregarded as an economic factor in the world's oil business. The following notes and observations must be regarded mainly as the views of one who has closely followed the fortunes of Russian oil, when considering the changes that have taken place in geological knowledge and oil-field technique, which have so profoundly modified oil-fields methods. Russia is fortunate in having retained the services of a few scientists and technologists whose devotion to science has superseded their personal inclination, and to these few men must be attributed the slow, but nevertheless striking, progress that has been made. The productive oil fields of Russia are centered around the Caspian Sea which, with its connected river system, constitutes such an ideal means of internal distribution for products. From the group of oil fields of which the city of Baku forms a center, oil is pumped to Black town, a suburb of Baku, where all the refineries are situated. The next important group of oil fields is located in the Terek district near Grosny, where refineries are erected and the products are piped or carried by tank cars to Petrovsk for the internal Russian market, or sent to the Black Sea by rail. A third oil field is spread over the province of Uralsk, north of the Caspian Sea, the main port of outlet being Gourief, at the mouth of the River Ural. In Trans-Caspia there are two oil-field centers, one near. Krasnovodsk on Chelekan Island, and one in Central Asia at Ferghana. The product of the former fields is transported to Baku for treatment, while the output of the Turkestan field is refined and consumed locally, mainly by the railway.

The purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resourcee, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigatioil pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnois-sance was attempted: such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their

Probably no more significant change has come into the lives of men in the past two hundred years than their shift from major dependence on plants and animals to major dependence on minerals. From the dawn of history, nay from long before that dawn, food and clothing had been man's main concern. The wandering of the tribes in pastoral ages was in search of grass for their cattle; the patient work of the "man with the hoe" has ever been to supply food for himself and family and if he accomplished so much he had little strength, energy, or ambition for other things. The great civilizations of the past arose in the fertile valleys where food supply was abundant or on shores where by grace of the wind and primitive wooden ships food could, if needed, be imported. Provision for the "seven lean years" by storing the abundance of the seven fat years was long held up as the highest example of statesmanship and the ambitions of the Roman populace did not go beyond bread and circuses, the former the product of a plant and the latter involving essentially contests of men and other animals. Through all those centuries of want, misery, and warfare it was, for example, an axiom that "an army fights oh its belly." Now an army rides to the battle line in trucks; its members stand up and fight with tons and tons of metal and other minerals. Food supply is assumed, and rightly so, for in this modern world of ours shortage of food is chargeable at once to poor organization or deficiency of transport. It is the purpose of this article to present the results of an investigation of certain clay and shale suspensions having viscosities that are materially influenced by fluid motion, and to discuss the bearing of these results upon the choice of policy in the control of drilling fluids. A previous article described the design and the characteristics of an instrument adapted to measure the viscosity of plastic suspensions during continuous uniform motion and at a variety of speeds.' It has long been recognized that the viscosity of a clay suspension depends on the past history of the fluid motion. Since an abundance of literature is available on this phenomenon,2 it is not necessary to describe it in more than general terms. It is usually observed that rapid motion reduces the viscosity of a clay suspension, and that some time is required for the viscosity to fall to its equilibrium value after the steady motion is started. On reducing the speed of motion to some lower value, the viscosity again rises, but it also requires some time to attain a steady viscosity value at the slower rate of motion. Thus clay suspensions are usually observed to be increasing in viscosity as time passes when the measurement has been immediately preceded by fluid motion that was more rapid than that employed in the measurement. And it is usually observed that the viscosity falls as time passes when the measurement has been preceded by more quiescent conditions. Reed,3 and Broughton and Hand4 have reported a condition of observation of clay suspensions in which the viscosity was observed to fall during the first few moments of steady motion, and rise thereafter. The characteristics of the new instrument are particularly well adapted to studies of this kind. With it we have been able to observe all of the phenomena described above, and it is important to understand their nature because they all occur at some time during normal drill-

It has been suggested to me that some data, bearing on the treatment of silver ores in Southern Arizona, would be in accord with the objects of the present meeting. I have, therefore, made a few notes, gathered from practical experience at some of the best known works of that district. Presuming the general arrangement of a silver mill to be familiar to members, the subject having been repeatedly brought to the notice of the Institute, it is my aim in the following description of the modus operandi at the different mills to which I would invite your attention, to give simply such salient points of the apparatus as have a direct bearing upon results, together with the cost of materials, labor, etc. I have gone somewhat deeply into detail in my descriptions of machinery, thinking that possibly some of our members engaged in this branch of the profession might find something of interest among them. In an industry such as silver milling, where the various works are scattered over a vast extent of territory, and the conditions under which results are obtained are subject to the greatest variations, it is essential to go into rather minute details in describing plants, processes, etc., in order to afford a clear idea of the operations. Not only should results be given, but also the means by which such are attained. The milleralogical and chemical constituents of the ore, and its physical properties, throw a flood of light upon the success or failure of a process Figures representing totals I have subdivided as much as possible, so that the cost per ton for labor, castings, chemicals, etc., are apparent. Unless all these Factors are known, no accurate comparison can be drawn, since in this branch of metallurgy, more perhaps than in others, the weakness of any one link in the chain of operations demoralizes the remainder. THE experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design.

A wide variety of borehole gages have been developed for measuring rock stress. They all operate on the principle that stress changes around a borehole result in deformation that can be measured by the gage and interpreted in terms of the stress change either by calculation or calibration. In general terms, gages that comply with the borehole deformations are referred to as “deformation meters” and those that restrain the deformations by reason of their rigidity are referred to as “stress meters.” The main advantages claimed for stress meters are: their “stress” sensitivity is much less dependent on the rock modulus than that of deformation meters, and they are clamped firmly in the borehole. The use of each of the borehole gages developed for stress determinations in rock in the main has been confined to the laboratory responsible for its development. To be generally accepted a gage must meet the following specifications : 1) Gages to be left in place to measure stress changes must be relatively cheap, and if possible recoverable, so that large numbers can be used to obtain an overall picture of the changing conditions. This, of course, is not necessarily the case for recoverable gages designed for absolute rock stress measurements where usually only one or two gages are involved. 2) For use in the adverse environmental conditions encountered underground, it is essential that gages be robust, stable, and unaffected by high humidity, corrosive water, or dust. 3) Highly qualified technicians are rarely employed specifically for rock mechanics studies in mines or on civil engineering sites and there- fore gages designed for measuring stress changes must be easy to set and

The activities of iron and nickel in liquid Fe-Ni alloys were determined by measuring the vapor pressures of iron and nickel above the alloys and comparing with the vapor pressures of the pure metals. Nickel was found to deviate negatively from Raoult's law over the entire composition range. Iron behaves ideally down to 0.7 mole fraction but shows negative deviations at lower concentrations. At 1600°C the activity coefficients at infinite dilution are 0.40 for iron and 0.66 for nickel. 1 HE formulation of the conditions of chemical equilibrium between liquid metals and gases or slags is an important application of thermodynamics to pro- cess metallurgy. Usually the metal and slag phases are solutions of several components; and for accurate calculations, it is often necessary to use the activities of the components in place of their concentrations. Data concerning activities, however, are quite meager. The evaluation of the activities of iron and nickel, presented in this paper, is part of a project to determine activities in iron alloys at elevated temperatures.

CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean usage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either (1) a stockwork or (2) a tourmaline breccia model. As indicated by evidence cited in the paper, stockwork-type deposits tend to be related to major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusion. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with touramline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusions which have a close time-space relationship to ore, and in each model mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alteration halos (phyllic, argillic, propylitic) as are developed in intrusive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

A survey of the literature on bottom-cast practice gives but Scant information as to some of the real facts concerning this most int'eresting method of steel manufacture, and some of the information available is very misleading. An exceptionally good description of this met,hod of pouring or teeming is to be found in an English publication2 on the heterogeneity of steel ingots. Quoting from this paper: (a) With bottom teeming, the metal rises steadily and progressively in the mold with the minimum possible agitation, the main force of the stream coming from the ladle being broken down or retarded by the down gate or runner. Further, the stream of metal from the ladle, under these conditions of casting, is invariably maintained at a much more continuous rate and is steadier than with top teeming. (b) In view of the facts referred to in (a) it follows that with bottom teeming the metal is not exposed to atmospheric oxidation to anything like the same degree as with top teeming. In this paper it is intended to detail briefly some of the advantages of bottom-cast practice and to discuss the possibilities of iron-oxide control in the basic open-hearth furnace. The following notes were taken on a trip through northern Korea in the fall of 1910. We started with about 19 Korean ponies, and as many Koreans, from Shin Anju, on the railway from Seoul to Antung. We passed through the ancient walled city of Anju, and thence up the valley of the Anju river. We then crossed over to the north into the Kalsan drainage, thence over another divide to the Chasung river, and finally reached the old Korean copper-smelting camp of Tong Jom— in all a distance by trail of about 200 miles. The return trip was made with ponies to Mampochin on the Yalu river, and thence' down the river in a junk to Antung. The route of travel is shown on the sketch map, Fig. 1.

The New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. History Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining operations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton concentrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper. THE raw materials of the ceramic industry are mostly clays. This raw material is ground, water is added and the mixture pugged into a moist, plastic, rather stiff mass. From this mass the desired units of manufacture are made (bricks, hollow building tile, sewer pipe, etc.). These units are dried; then placed in kilns and heated until the desired degree of vitrification is obtained.1 For firing ceramic ware, two distinct types of kilns are used; namely, periodic and continuous tunnel. PERIODIC KILNS Periodic kilns are those ordinarily seen in a brick plant. They are either round or rectangular. The raw, dried, formed ware is piled or set in the kilns to depths frequently exceeding 10 ft. The kiln is heated until the ware is matured, then gradually cooled sufficiently to allow men to remove the ware; then the cycle is repeated. The time duration of the cycle may be more than two weeks. In order that heat can be distributed uniformly throughout the pile or setting, the units are placed so as to leave open spaces or flues through-out the pile for the passage of the hot gases. Each kiln is provided with a number of fireboxes (usually 10 or 12) spaced equally in the outside wall. The fireboxes may be equipped with flat or inclined grate bars or they may have no grates at all (dead bottom). Down-draft kilns are most used. In these the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fireboxes are deflected upward by bag walls just inside the fire zone. From the top of the kiln the gases are drawn down through the setting, off through holes in the kiln bottom, and conducted to a stack or stacks. In up-draft kilns the fireboxes are usually set somewhat lower. The hot gases are drawn inward and upward through the ware and pass off from the top. Up-draft kilns find their greatest use in the firing of common brick. In either case the problem is to maintain, as nearly as possible,
