This paper deals with the results obtained and the techniques employed in determining: 1. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of the HH and HT type heat-resistant alloys. 2. The relation of true temperatures (thermocouple) to apparent temperatures (optical pyrometer) for the molten HH and HT type alloys. This work was the outgrowth of needing to know something definite about these temperatures in order to study the effect of pouring temperatures, shake-out times, and heat-treatments on the properties of some heat-resistant alloys. The information developed is thought to be of interest to industry for guidance in foundry practices and the industrial heat applications of the alloys. This paper is based upon work that has been done for the Alloy Casting Institute at Battellc Memorial Institute. Liquidus and Solidus Temperatures of HH and HT Type Alloys Experimenta1 Procedures Temperature-time curves were obtained during the cooling and solidification of several HH and HT type alloys. The metal was melted in an Ajax high-frequency, induction furnace and poured into a core-sand mold for cooling. The temperature measurements were obtained by means of a platinum, platinum-rhodium thermocouple contained within a fused silica sheath, which was extended through the side wall of the dry core-sand mold to a point at about the center of the mold cavity, which was 3 in. in diameter by 5 in. deep. The cold junction of the thermocouple was kept in an ice bottle, and the temperature was recorded automatically on a direct-reading potentiometer recorder. Through a switching arrangement, the temperature recorded was checked occasionally with a portable Leeds and North-rup potentiometer indicator. Less than a 5°F. variation in the two instruments was always found. This is within the limit of accuracy of readings. The thermocouple used was checked for accuracy against a standard couple, both before use on this work and after completion of the work, by the instrument laboratory. Temperature-time Cooling Curves Fig. I is an enlarged reproduction of a part of one of the cooling curves over the temperature range of 2600' to 2200°F. for an alloy of the HT type with 0.45 per cent carbon, 16 per cent chromium, and 36 per cent nickel. This is a typically shaped cooling curve as obtained for the alloys. It will be noted that two temperatures "re shown on Fig. I for the liquidus temperature. The objective of the present study was to detennine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon unsaturated fatty acids as collectors. Streaming potential measurements were made on a plug of pure synthetic rutile in solutions of inorganic electrolytes and unsaturated 18-carbon fatty acid soaps. Experimental results from these tests are detailed in the paper. The collector effectiveness of oleic acid with one double bond, linoleic acid with two double bonds, and linolenic acid with three double bonds has been a matter of speculation for many years, and conflic- ting experimental evidence1-8 has not clarified the issue. The overall objective of the present study was to determine the role played by double bonds in the flotation of a very pure mineral using 18-carbon un-saturated fatty acids as collectors. Since zeta potential is dependent on adsorption and orientation of ions at the solid-liquid interface, its variation under different conditions of pH and collector concentration should throw some light on the behavior of unsatu-rated fatty acids in flotation pulps. Titanium dioxide, in the form of rutile, was chosen for the investigation because it is now available in a very pure, synthetic, crystalline state, and despite the fact that it is one of the most important synthetic inorganic chemicals in commercial use, its electro-kinetic properties have not been closely studied. Electrokinetic properties of rutile in various aqueous solutions are discussed in this paper. A merhod based on theoretical considerations is presented for estimating srabilized performance of gas wells from data obtained from short-term flow tests. Calculated results are presented for II gas wells evaluated with four-to five-hour flow tests. For seven wells on which comparison war available, satisfactory agreement between measured and calculated performance was obfained. Although the final results are favorable, diflerences in flow capacity k,h obtained from flow tests conducted at different rates were observed. This inconsistency did not seriously affect the calculated results in the test wells. INTRODUCTION In order to negotiate the sale of gas from newly drilled gas wells and to plan otherwise for the orderly exploitation of gas reserves, it is necessary to predict the long-term withdrawal rates physically possible for each well. Since low permeability gas wells do not stabilize except after a lengthy period of flow, the operator is unable, without wasting large amounts of gas, to measure directly the stabilized performance prior to contracting for sale of the gas and connecting the well to a pipeline. This problem is not new, but is one which has recently received considerable attention because of the rising importance of natural gas in the economy and new emphasis on the development of gas reserves. Thus, a method is needed for estimating stabilized performance from information obtained from short-flow tests in which stabilized flow is not attained. Such short tests would be suitable for wells not connected to a pipeline since the tests require only small amounts of time, labor and production of gas. Other requirements of such a method are short calculation time and use of a model of the gas well and its reservoir drainage area which is as consistent as possible with present theoretical, experimental and field knowledge. The method presented herein was developed in an effort to meet these requirements. It has been named the "two-Row method". In addition to the section on the evelopment and description of the method, a description of field application of the method and a discussion of well test results are in- cluded. Finally, there is a section on an additional consideration prompted by some of the test results. The Appendix contains certain details of the derivation of the two-flow method and a sample calculation for Test Well 1. MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The method is based upon the following assumptions: (1) The system can be described as a finite cylindrical gas reservoir produced by a single cylindrical well located at the center of the reservoir. Flow is strictly radial. (2) Flow obeys Darcy's law except very near the well where a quadratic flow law is assumed. (3) The system is also characterized by a laminar flow skin factor. The use of a quadratic or turbulent flow term is more fully justified in Refs. 1 and 2. When such a system is opened at the wellbore to constant rate flow from an initial condition of uniform pressure distribution, the radius or drainage quickly passes through the non-Darcy flow and "skin effect" region imrnediately surrounding the well. After the drainage radius or "transient" has passed beyond this region and before it reaches the external boundary, drawdown can be expressed by'." After the drainage radius reaches the external boundary, stabilized flow exists and drawdown is given by'," Eqs. 1 and 2 form the basis for the method. The validity of these equations will now be examined in the light of some well test data previously available. It has been found by actual measurements on gas wells that the relationship between drawdown and flow rate, that is the performance curve, is closely approximated by' Eq. 3 is a straight line on log-log graph paper. The Harold D. Roberts tunnel, in Summit and Park Counties, Colorado, is a concrete-lined pressure tunnel finished to a circular cross section of 10.25 ft diam. The tunnel is 23.3 miles long and is designed to transport water for domestic use by the City and County of Denver from reservoir storage at Dillon to a tributary of the South Platte River at Grant. The tunnel passes beneath the Continental Divide at the crest of the Front Range and intersects rocks of diverse types and origins and geologic structures of extreme complexity. Geologic investigations preceded and were continued during construction and contributed materially to the safe and economical advance of the tunnel headings. Geological data obtained and evaluated during construction include plans and sections on a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft, rock temperatures at 2000-ft intervals, records of progress related to geology, records of ground-water conditions, summaries of the use of steel and timber supports, and summaries of grouting operations. Adverse conditions required use of steel and timber supports for 71.74% of the total length of the tunnel. Most supported sections reached a condition of equilibrium within a few hours to a few months after being excavated, and the concrete lining serves chiefly to provide an additional safety factor and to provide necessary hydraulic characteristics to the tunnel. Efforts to attain a maximum rate of advance of the tunnel headings necessitated use of more steel and timber supports than would have been required in a less accelerated tunneling operation. This report summarizes geologic investigations prior to and during construction of the Harold D. Roberts tunnel in Summit and Park Counties, Colorado (Fig. 1) and analyzes the tunneling operation as it is related to the various kinds of geologic conditions encountered in the tunnel. The tunnel is concrete lined to a circular cross section of 10.25 ft and is designed to transport 788 sec ft from reservoir storage at Dillon 23.3 miles along a dog-leg course passing under the Continental Divide to outlet and control works at Grant, Colo. The primary purpose of the tunnel is to augment the domestic water supply of the City and County of Denver, but plans include provisions for power generation at the outlet portal at a future date. Location of the tunnel was made after extensive preliminary geologic and engineering investigations by the Board of Water Commissioners of the City and County of Denver, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. In 1946 the Board of Water Commissioners started tunnel driving on a limited scale from the east (outlet) portal and by 1955 had completed 9986 ft of tunnel. An urgent need for additional sources of water supply required acceleration of the tunneling operation, and, in 1955, Tipton and Kalmbach Inc. of Denver were assigned the responsibility of reviewing the project and preparing plans and specifications for the tunnel and appurtenant features. Additional geologic studies were made, and the geology of several possible alternate tunnel lines were compared before determining that the tunnel should be driven along the course previously adopted by the Board of Water Commissioners. Uranium metal with a purity of about 99.9 pct was produced on a large scale by fused salt electrolysis with a material efficiency of about 90 pct. The material efficiency depends mainly on bath composition, electrolysis temperature, electrode smothering, and elutriation during washing of the powder. RESEARCH and development work on fused salt electrolysis carried on by the Westinghouse Lamp Div. Bloomfield, N. J., was done under the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers and later under the Atomic Energy Commission for the commercialization of uranium production for the first atomic pile at the University of Chicago in 1942. From the conception of the atomic bomb project it was recognized that metals with impurity levels having little metallurgical significance would be required. Permissible impurity levels were based on neutron absorption. Of particular significance was boron, which could not be present in amounts exceeding 1 ppm. The electrolytic method as developed in 1930 by Driggs and Lilliendahl,1,2 and later improved, yielded uranium of very low boron and other deleterious impurity content. No other method was capable at that time of producing uranium metal of the required purity.' The low boron content of uranium produced by the electrolytic process resulted from the availability of the reactants which were low in boron content, and from the inherent elimination of boron in the fused salt bath. Since the heart of any electrolytic process is the electrolysis cell, this paper will deal with the development of the original bath composition for the efficient production of uranium from a batch process to one of continuous operation. Emphasis also will be placed on other factors which will affect the material efficiency of the process. With the laboratory cell the material efficiency of uranium powder recovery in the early electrolysis was relatively low, about 35 pct based on the ratio of uranium recovered to uranium added. This early process also had other defects. The electro- lytic bath could not be used continuously. After three runs from a freshly charged crucible, the deposit showed a tendency to slip off the electrode as it was raised from the bath. This condition necessitated pouring the charge every fourth run and preparing a new bath. It was assumed at that time that this condition was caused by the increasing fluoride concentration with each addition of uranium salt, which adected the mobility of the uranium ions. Experimental The electrolysis cells differed in size only. They were of the floating cathode type. The laboratory cells were 21/2 in. ID and 6 in. deep and operated at 30 amp and 5 volts. Production was about 150 g metal powder per 8 hr. The plant cells (5 units) were 9 in. ID x 21 in. deep and operated at 1800 amp at 12 volts. The total production unit was designed to produce 250 lb of uranium powder per 8 hr day. Because of the tendency of uranium fines toward spontaneous combustion, material efficiencies were based only on the recovery of useful coarser metal which could be safely handled. The reported efficiencies are of particular significance only as related to the same group of experimental procedures. At the start of the project no changes were contemplated until previous data could be definitely confirmed. Therefore, the first experiments were with the 50 pct CaCl2-50 pct NaCl mixture. The material efficiency of uranium deposition as a function of the number of electrolyses is shown in Table I. In Table I, the decrease in efficiency at 800°C with number of runs is apparent and confirmed the earlier data. Operating at 900°C enabled the number of runs to be doubled, but before pouring the charge the efficiency of recovery became poor. This test indicated that the improved efficiency might have been caused by an increase in the fluidity of the bath.

Research on roof bolting has developed significant information with respect to the functions that can be performed by properly installed bolts and the methods that can be used to ensure that effective installation has been achieved. The present paper brings together results that are pertinent to the design of a bolting system for reinforcing horizontally stratified mine roof with vertical bolts. The design approach is based on the use of bolts to decrease the maximum bending stress within an arbitrary sequence of roof strata (see Fig. 2) in which the only loads are the weights of the individual beds. The use of rock bolts to achieve other objectives, such as to stabilize a fractured rock mass on the periphery of a mine opening,3 is excluded from consideration herein. Reinforcing effect of bolts consists of a friction effect and a suspension effect in combination. "Friction effect" refers to reduction of bending in a stratified roof due to clamping action of tensioned bolts, which compress the strata, thereby creating frictional resistance to displacement along planes of stratification. (The flexure of a sequence of strata is necessarily accompanied by horizontal displacement of each bed with respect to its neighbor, along mutual surfaces of contact.) Although the sliding of the beds tends to exert a shearing effect on the bolts, tests show that this has negligible influence on the bending stresses, probably because the bolts are so far apart. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of the weaker or thinner strata to one or more thick strata, which occurs when strata with differing tendencies to deflect are constrained to have equal deflection. The term "suspension" is used irrespective of whether the thin strata are above or below the thick strata, because tests show that the supporting effect of the flexurally more rigid roof strata is for practical purposes independent of their position in a bolted sequence of strata. An earlier paper4 dealt with a bolted unit in which all strata had equal flexural rigidity; bolting could develop a friction effect but no suspension effect. The present paper deals primarily with a bolted unit in which all strata do not have equal flexural rigidity, so that bolting can develop both a friction effect and a suspension effect. The reinforcing effect of the bolts was determined by a combination of experimental and theoretical stress analysis.4'6'7 The experimental method consisted of loading a model by rotating it in a centrifuge to simulate the gravity forces exerted about an underground excavation. Models were made from two different limestones, although the results are independent of the material because the elastic constants were taken into account in the data analysis. Electric resistance strain gages were bonded to the highest and lowest members of the bolted unit to determine the outer-fiber bending strains at the center and at the supports. The quantitative results presented herein are based on tests of 56 different models, which included a range of values for the structural parameters. Each model was tested several times, with different combinations of spacing and tension of the bolts. DESIGN EQUATIONS The effects of friction and suspension on the flexure of a bolted stratified roof can be expressed by the following equations, which give the maximum bending stress, the deflection, the friction effect, the suspension effect and the transferred load for any (the i-th) member of the bolted unit in terms of the structural parameters:

Metallurgists have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steel-making of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxi-dizer in rimming steels.' Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated,2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B2O3 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. Experimental Procedure No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The must satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron.5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. These difficulties made it impossible to maintain a constant slag composition for an unlimited period Of time. However, by using the rotating technique, short runs could be made in

This paper shows that volume stability, low porosity and decreased pyroplasticity are desirable for blast-furnace linings, partitularly for the hearth. It shows further that a hot load test is a valuable means of testing the fusion or softening behavior of a refractory at operating temperatures. The effect of carbon monoxide on commercia1 blast-furnace refractories in their as-received condition and after refiring is reported, showing that many commercial blast-furnace refractories disintegrate badly but that refiring decreases the effect and certain special refractories are now available which are almost free of the tendency. Factors Affecting Choice of ._ Refractories If one were to depend entirely upon experience or trial in the selection of clay refractories, the solution of a problem would be a slow process. Furnace campaigns are so long and attended by so many variables that it is difficult to draw fine distinctions within a reasonable period of time in regard to the quality of refractories used. It could be said, of course, that if service results do not yield the proper information for intelligent choice, there is no difference in the quality of brick being considered, but this is not necessarily true. Conventional ceramic tests are designed to give the ceramic engineer information as to the refractoriness and firing tempera- . ture, which he in turn internrets in terms of volume stability, ability to withstand load at high temperature (pyroplasticity), permeability, chemical stability and re-. sistance to the action of slag. In most refractory applications . several of these factors are involved. In a particular instance, one requirement may be predominant, while in others some other factors may be of primary importance. In this country, clay refractories are generally made from mixtures of plastic and flint fire clays. The process of firing a clay refractory is one of slowly melting the constituents, and during this operation its porosity is gradually reduced. The process is arrested, of course, in its incipient Stages and the Progress is determined by measuring slight changes in porosity, volume, bulk gravity, etc., that have taken place. Often the temperatures to which clay refractories are exposed in service are higher than those employed in their firing. However, if the manufacturer were to fire them at such high temperatures the brick would distort. Therefore it would be difficult for the manufacturer to fire all of his clay refractories to temperatures at which they are to be used, although in many cases it would be desirable from the user's point of view if he would do so. The porosity of clay refractories decreases by firing, to a minimum limit, after which a further increase in the temperature causes expansion in certain clay constituents and bloating in others. Both may occur in the same refractory containing two such clays.

The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. To this system is added continuously a bullion containing 0.2 per cent As and 0.8 per

IN 1939, at the request of The Koppers Coal Co., the Koppers Company Research Department established a Stoker Coal Research Laboratory for the purpose of investigating the performance characteristics of stoker coals in typical domestic stoker installations. Fig. I is a photograph of part of the laboratory. The material in this paper deals with the performance of one coal in a single installation. Presented are details of this installation, mechanical characteristics of the stoker, and the results of a series of burning tests in which adjustments were systematically varied. SUMMARY OF RESULTS Mechanical Features I. A large percentage of the total power consumed by a domestic stoker is used to operate the gear case and motor (Fig. 3). 2. The power consumption per ton goes down with an increase in rate of coal feed (Fig. 4). 3. The automatic air control in this stoker showed advantages over manual control (Fig. 5). 4. The air velocities through the retort tuyeres were uniform around the retort, but varied between the rows of tuyere rings (Fig. 6). 5. The crushing of coal with this stoker increased the minus 1/8-in. from 1 1.6 per cent to 19.2 per cent. There was a noticeable segregation of coal as it came from the retort and distribution was not uniform (Fig. 7). 6. Measurement of air entering over the fire showed that with some not uncommon adjustments this air may he a high percentage of the total air supply (Fig. 8 and Table I). Operating Performance I. The removal of clinker was shown to give a period of poor performance characterized by a high fuel-bed resistance and a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the flue gases (Fig. 10). 2. The fuel-bed resistance was found to decrease as the fuel bed built up in a normal response to heat demand after a prolonged hold-fire (Fig. II). 3. With intermittent operation the burning rate was almost always less than the feeding rate. The wide variations were found to be greatly dependent upon the length of the On period and the length of the intervals between On periods (Fig. 12). 4. The maintenance of a low furnace draft led to less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. I3). 5. The maintenance of a minimum of excess air also resulted in less fly ash, better clinker formation, and higher efficiencies (Fig. 14). The conzpaction of metal powders is analyzed through density-pressure curves as a three-stage process — die filling, individual particle motion, gross compact deformatim. The densification occurring during each of these stages is evaluated quantitatively. The amount of densification in the first and second stages is primarily a function of particle geometry. The densification taking place in the third stage is dependent mainly upon the material. AT the present time the densification of powders during compaction is usually described by terms such as "compactibility," "compressibility," and "compression ratio." Schwarzkopfl has proposedthat compactibility be defined as the minimum pressure needed to produce a given green strength, while compressibility be used to indicate the extent towhichthe density of a powder is increased by a given pressure. Compression ratio is generally defined as the ratio of the compact density obtained at a given pressure to the apparent density of the loose powder. 13alshina found that the pressure imposed on a compact affects the relative volume of the compact according to the following relation: hP= - LV + C [ll where: P is the applied pressure, V is the relative volume of the compact, Ratio of the specific volume of the compact to that of the material without porosity. While many parts of Canada's pre-Cambrian shield are well served by railway, it is frequently necessary for prospecting purposes to proceed farther into areas inaccessible by rail. To such areas in summer the canoe was at one time the accepted means of travel for the prospector while the dog team was much used in winter. Although summer travel was much improved by the development of the outboard motor, the lack of facilities for cheap transportation has been a serious hindrance to the employment of capital in opening up the distant fields. The pre-Cambrian surface of Manitoba, like that of Ontario, is hummocky, with rounded hills and ridges of rock alternating with basinlike depressions and valleys occupied by lakes and rivers Or by many low-lying portions covered with muskeg' Routes to the mines have not usually been direct or easy and seasonal vagaries have presented problems in themselves. In summer, water transportation may be the cheapest method for the longer distances but it is not every water route that will satisfy the conditions of loading freight on to a boat or scow and of conveying it without interruption to its destination. By its location, a mine may require a large program of boat transportation in summer Over part of its route, to be followed by winter freighting for the remainder. In order to carry on development and produc- tion over a long period, it may be necessary to haul large quantities of supplies during the winter. This seasonal problem, particularly for the out-of-the-way properties, is SO important and demanding as to make it a major operation in the life of the mine. The -use of the tractor during winter months for heavy machinery and bulk supplies, and the use of the airplane throughout the year for the transportation of personnel and for emergency requirements, have greatly improved transportation to places that are inaccessible by rail. Canada has pioneered in both these methods. Development oF Transportation Twenty-two years have seen a marked change in transportation methods in Canada's mining country. Horse-drawn sleighs have given way to the tractor and that to some extent has been supplanted by the airplane. One of the earliest ventures involving transportation of considerable magnitude was that of the Mandy mine, on Schist at in northern Manitoba. According to accounts of early mining activities in Manitoba, the Mandy mine, beginning December 1916, had 3300 tons of ore hauled 40 miles by sleigh to Saskatchewan River and in summer this was conveyed by barge to The Pas, 130 miles, and then by railroad to Trail, British Columbia, 1200 miles. The m.echanica1 properties, at high lzomologous temperatures, of the intermetallic compounds InzBi and Mg17A112 were measured as a .function of temperature, applied strain rate, previous thermal and mechanical history, and composition. Mgl,Al12 was investigated ilz compression, whereas Zn,Bi was investigated in tension. A decrease inflow stress with increasing strain was observed jor both alloys. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the dislocation-multiplication processes in these materials. MANY intermetallic compounds are reported to undergo a brittle-ductile transition at high homologous temperatures.' There is evidence in the literature that some of these compounds exhibit a large yield drop when plastically deformed.'j3 Both of these forms of behavior are shown by the covalent elements germanium and silicon4,5 and also by certain ionic compounds.8 The present work is a study of the deformation, at high homologous temperatures (>2/3 Tm), of two intermetallic compounds, In2Bi and Mg17Al12. InzBi has a disordered hexagonal structure7 (c/a = 0.598) and a solubility range of 32.3 — 33.2 at. pct Bi.8 It has a melting range from 72° to 89°C. Mg17Al12 has an ordered bcc (A12 type)7 structure and exists over the range 50 to 60 at. pct Mg8 with a melting range from 437° to 462°C. We have been unable to find any reference to previous investigations of the mechanical properties of BiIn,. Novikovg has reported that cast samples of Mg17A112 show ductility, when bend-tested, at temperatures above 380°C. EXPERIMENTAL Ingots of In2Bi and Mg17Al12 were melted under an argon atmosphere and cast, in situ, in a graphite crucible. The materials used were of 99.99 pct purity. The alloys prepared contained 66.9 at. pct In in the case of In2Bi and 58.4 at. pct Mg in the case of m17A112. The ingots were homogenized and then extruded. Two-in.-diam Mg17Al12 ingots were extruded at 375°C to give 3/8-in.-diam rod. The rate of formation of this rod was 0.25 in. per min. One-in.-diam InzBi ingots were extruded at 20°C, using a rate of 1 in. per min, to give 1/8-in.-diam rod. In both cases the extruded rod had a recrystal- lized, fine-grain, structure. (For Mg17Al12, d = 11.2 µ; for BiIn2, d = 22 µ.) Mechanical-property determinations were made in a hard-beam machine, in tension in the case of In2Bi and in compression with Mgl7Al12. The tensile tests were on specimens having a gage length of 1.1/2 in. and a diameter of 1/8 in. The compression tests on Ml7A112 were on specimens of 3/8 in. diam by 3/8 in. high and the ends were coated with poly-tetrafluorethylene to minimize friction. RESULTS In2Bi. Fig. 1 shows, particularly at the higher applied strain rates, that In2Bi exhibits a marked yield drop as the deformation increases to about 2 pct, after which the material shows neither hardening nor softening up to 15 pct strain. The magnitude of the yield drop, the stress in the region of flow under constant stress (the stress plateau), and the 0.5 pct proof stress were all dependent upon the applied strain rate according to an expression of the form

In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). These hoists now offer the only available supply of exhaust steam; but as this flow is intermittent and varies from extreme violence to zero, the steam so discharged cannot be

On Aug. 10, 1884, the Retsof Mining Co. began the sinking of an 18 by 12-ft. shaft at Retsof, N. Y. Rock salt was reached in 1885, in September, at 1008 ft. below the surface. The first salt was shipped in the fall of 1885. A timber breaker was built in 1886. In July, 1895, there was a consolidation of the Retsof Mining Co., the Greigsville Salt & Mining Co., the Livonia Salt Co., and the Lehigh Salt & Mining Co. These consolidated salt companies are now known as the Retsof Mining Co., a subsidiary of the International Salt Go. Eventually all of the mines were closed except the mine of the Retsof Mining Co., at Retsof, Livingston County, New York. On July 6, 1921, about 1/2 mile south of the original shaft arid plant of the Retsof Mining Co., a new 9 by 28-ft. concrete-liried shaft was started. The shaft is 1063 ft. deep from the top of the shaft collar to the bottom of the salt bed. At the same time a reinforced-concrete breaker and other buildings were erccted. This new plant began operations on Dee. 15, 1923. It was designed for a capacity of 3000 tons in 8 hours. Geology The workable rock-salt bed is 1063 ft. below the surface and 326 ft. below sea level, and varies in thickness from 9 to 10 ft. The total thickness is greater than that but is contaminated with shale above and below the pure mineral. The characteristics of the formation are shown in Tables 1 and 2. The bed dips uniformly 0.87 per cent to the south. Prospecting As the salt deposil in New York State is known, very little prospecting has been necessary. Before the sinking of the Retsof No. 1 shaft, a well was drilled to prove the existence of salt. No. 1 shaft was sunk where the well was located. The several salt wells drilled in Livingston Courlty proved generally the existence of salt throughout the county. (See U. S. Geol. Survey Bull. 669: Salt Resources of the U. S.)

The external corrosion of casing is one of the most important problems facing the present day production man. A 1953 NACE report' estimated the annual cost of casing corrosion at $2,200,000 in 22 fields studied. The fields represented only 10 per cent of the wells in the United States. It was significant that 77 per cent of the failures reported were due to external corrosion. A variety of means for combatting the casing corrosion problem have been discussed in papers such as the NACE survey' mentioned previously. No attempt to revicw these will be made in this paper. Thc scope of this paper has been limited to a discussion of the following major items: (I) an instrument for studying external electrolytic corrosion; (2) use of this instrument to determine the quantity of protective current required to prevent corrosion of casing; and (3) problem of accelerated external corrosion of the oil string at the base of the surface string. ELECTROCHEMICAL MECHANISM OF CORROSION It IS gcncrally belleved that one major cause of external corrosion is the existence of electrolytic cells operating between various formation waters. A theoretical discussion of the role of earth potentials in casing corrosion has been presented by L. de Witte and F. J. Radd.2 A brief picture of the electrolytic corrosion action between two differcnt formations (A and B) is presented in Fig. I. This picture is a review to many but is given to insure clarity. In the anode area, oxidation takes place as iron ions go into solution in formation A as a product of corrosion. In the cathode area. reduction takes place and hydrogen atoms are formed at the boundary between the pipe and formation B. The flow of electrons. as indicated. is into the pipe at the anode or corroding area and out of the pipe into the formation at the cathode. In order to conform with regulations of this journal, the flow of a conventional current (I! is also indicated in this sketch. All subsequent references will be to this so-called conventional current flow and will be indicated by the symbol (I). As this action takes place the layer of hydrogen developed on the cathode offers a resistance to the flow of current in the cell. It is said (hat the cathode has been polarized. This polarizing film can be rcmoved by addition of a so-called dcpolarizing agent which reacts with and removes this hydrogen film. Such an agent must be present in ordcr for this corrosion reaction to go at a rate sufficient to cause a severe corrosion problem. The two common depolarizing agents are: (I) oxy-sen. which readily reacts with hydro gen to form water, and (2) certain bacteria which use atomic hydrogen as part of their life process. It is not difficult to explain the presence of these agents. Oxygen may be present in some very shallow formations. Sulfate reducing bacteria are found to exist in nearly any ground where mud pits might be dug. THE CASING POTENTIAl-PROFILE Instrumentation A sketch of the equipment* uscd in determining casing potential profiles is shown in Fig. 2. The tool is run in the hole using a hoist truck with a three-conductor cable. This tool must be run with tubing and rods out of the hole and should be run with the flow line disconnected. By proper choice of electrode size it can be run in any size casing. The electrodes must be run in an open hole or a hole filled with oil. Measurements cannot be made while immersed in water. The tungsten carbide-tipped knives serve as the electrical robes and arc spaced 25 ft apart. Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definitive life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital writeoffs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral properly possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulphur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. IN the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an. average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inbye the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outbye that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inbye and outbye the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outbye the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inbye the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on, correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the. roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

In order to obtain a better insight into the pressure-volume relationship of reservoir rocks a theory of pore and rock bulk volume variations is presented. The theory is independent of the shape of the pores but is restricted to isotropic porous media built up of continuous homogeneous matrix material. The main conclusion obtained from this theory is that only three elastic constants and three viscous constants are required for describing pore and rock bulk volume variations if the porosity is explicitly introduced into the treatment. In addition, reasonable approximations are introduced for various types of reservoir rock, e.g., sandstones, limestones, and shales, which lead to further simplifications of the basic formulas. In consequence there is then a further reduction in the number of deformation constants which have to be determined experimentally. It is shown how measurements of these remaining deformation constants can be performed most conveniently. Finally the application of the theory to reservoir studies is discussed and the translation of experimental results obtained in the laboratory into reservoir behavior is considered. INTRODUCTION The decline of fluid pressure in connection with the withdrawal of fluid from an underground reservoir gives rise to a change in volume of both reservoir fluids and reservoir rock. The volume variation of the reservoir rock results in a decrease of both the pore volume and the total volume of the fluid-filled formation. Whereas the variation in volume of the reservoir fluids with pressure is usually known from PVT analysis, that in the volume of the porous medium is rarely measured, as it is considered of minor importance in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, certain experimental results' suggest that in a number of cases the neglection of the variation in pore volume may introduce errors into material balance calculations of reservoirs producing above the bubble point. Only a few experimental results on the compressibility of porous rocks have been published. The compressibility of pure quartz and of calcite can be found in a paper by Adams and Williamson'. Botset and Reed' carried out some experiments on the compressibility of loose sands, while Carpenter and Spencer' measured the compressibility of a number of consolidated sandstones, which data were supplemented by Hughes and Cooke5. Hall' finally reported a number of experiments designed to study the influence of the porosity on the compressibility of oil-bearing formations, from which it appeared that, particularly in the low porosity range, the compressibility of the pore volume is important enough to be taken into account. Difficulties, however, arise in applying these experimental results to field cases. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of the published data. Yet even if more complete data were available, the need for a theoretical background would be strongly felt. Such a background can be partially found in studies carried out by Biot,6,7 who published a theory of elastic deformations of porous materials and their influence on fluid displacement within the pores, by Lubinski8, who studied the stress distribution in an elastic porous medium neglecting pore compressibility, and by Gass-mann" who mathematically analysed the elasticity of packings of spheres. The contributions of Biot intro-duce a number of deformation constants which are impractical for reservoir rocks from an aspect of experi-mental determination. Amid the violent economic changes of recent years that have affected Canadian gold-mining operations so deeply, the discovery and early developments of Kirkland Lake might easily be overlooked. There was more than one "false dawn" for the district before developments finally established the fact of a superb mineralized zone extending through the present operating properties. Never far from the railway, Kirkland Lake has had the benefit of direct rail service for many years. The pioneer discovery on which the first mill and cyanide plant was erected was the "Tough-Oakes," this property being on what is now the eastern end of the producing area; some time later, the "Lake Shore" was discovered at the present center of the district, and a small plant was built upon it also. Both of these early treatment plants were of pre-war design. Progress in gold metallurgy has caused a gradual change in cyanide practice since the early days at Kirkland Lake, which may be observed in the various plants now operating there. From the beginning, it was recognized that Kirkland Lake ores were more responsive to cyanidation than to alternative recovery methods, and that their mineralization contained gold in very finely divided form. Although sulfides and tellurides are present, the quantity is small, being in the order of 1 or 2 per cent by weight, so that gravity concentration is undesirable, since gold is not confined to the sulfides. Some complication is offered by the presence of tellurides, which have caused lengthy controversy over their importance in recovery methods, but which are now generally regarded as less harmful in the light of increasingly high recoveries being obtained. Nevertheless, finely divided gold intimately associated with sulfides in the presence of tellurides; and occurring in the hard Kirkland Lake porphyry ore, substantially free from natural slime-forming constituents, indicates fine grinding. This has been the universal practice although the degree of grinding has varied a little among the different mills and is considerably finer now than formerly. The natural condition as outlined caused the establishment of fine grinding at an early stage in the development of Kirkland Lake, during the period of valuation of gold at, $20.67 per ounce.
