ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by plotting [So = ooT as a function of eo =o] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors? It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented by plotting the average true stress, [S = P] as a function of [e = q' = log A-le = log Lo] where P, A, L, S, [e], and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. Some interesting and, to American eyes, rather unusual processes for refining impure aluminum derived from scraps were found by American and British investigators who went into Germany in 1945 for the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was found was recorded in a series of reports (see page ), many of which have been released for general reading. This paper gathers under one title and summarizes the German work in refining light metal scrap. Reference must be made to the original reports for greater detail. Basically, the occasion and stimulus for the German developments in treating light metal scrap were hard necessity. Germany needed the metal for a rapacious war industry. Adequate supplies of new aluminum from reduction works were not assured. Great quantities of airplane and other light metal war scraps were forecast. It was evident that the scrap metal would have to be reabsorbed by the producing industry and would have to be kept of good quality. The normal current production of manufacturing scrap was being and could be consumed as generated. It offered no technical problem. The mixed scraps, especially those arising from crashed and decommissioned airplanes, however, presented problems of another kind. Airplane Scrap The recovery of usable aluminum alloy from the mixed assemblies that made up the piles of airplane scrap was attacked in different ways by different groups and with differing degrees of success. Three procedures actually were used on a commercial scale, one was in pilot-plant stage and another had come to a halt in the laboratory a year before Germany collapsed. Four of these five processes actually involved "refining"; that is, some measure of purification of the metal after melting. Sorting and Separation on a Sloping Hearth The simplest procedure for utilizing airplane scrap involved no refining in the strict sense of the word. This was the practice adopted by two representative plants visited by the author, the Leipziger Leichtmetalle Werke, Rackwitz, Saxony, and the Vereinigte Leichtmetalle Werke, Hanover. These firms did essentially the same thing that was done in England but not with equal success, to judge by their shorter experience, the smaller tonnage handled and by the number and quality of alloys produced. The two German firms named rough-sorted scraps by their easily recognizable alloys, essentially by part and shape. They used hand labor to chop and hack and tear apart. THIS investigation is concerned with the origin of the intercrystalline voids and cracks formed in metals and alloys subjected to stress at elevated temperature. There have been many suggestions in the recent literature relating to this problem. Greenwood' suggested that the voids may be produced by vacancy condensation. Zener has stated that shear-stress relaxation across grain boundaries could initiate high tensile stresses at the regions blocking grain boundary slip and thereby cause the formation of cracks. Chang and Grant3 have described the formation of cracks at grain boundary triple points and have experimentally verified Zener's mechanism for the grain boundary regions in the vicinity of a triple point. Subsequent to the completion of this investigation, Gifkins4 developed a model which made use of Stroh's5 mechanism of fracturing to produce sub-microscopic fractures that subsequently grow by grain boundary slip. Chen and Machlin,6 in answer to Gifkins, described a model deduced from the present investigation, in which grain boundary slip provides both the stress to fracture at grain boundary jogs and the deformation required to separate fractured jog surfaces. The possibility of gas condensation to form intercrystalline voids and cracks is eliminated as a basic mechanism because such voids and cracks are developed in vacuum melted material containing minute amounts, if any, of gaseous impurities. In a theoretical evaluation of this problem, Machlin7 concluded that void nucleation by vacancy condensation during creep-rupture is improbable but that vacancy condensation on supercritical sized voids to produce growth is probable. This investigation was begun to evaluate the suggested mechanisms for intercrystalline fracture. In particular, in order to correlate vacancy supersaturation ratios produced in creep with those determined by Bal-luffi and Seigle8 as critical for , the nucleation of voids, specimens were obtained from the same heat of brass as used by the latter authors, through the courtesy of Dr. Seigle. The experiments conducted in this investigation fall into the following categories: 1) Brass—observation of voids produced under a variety of conditions, including creep under compression, to evaluate the mechanisms of void nucleation and growth. 2) Bicrystal experiments to check the mechanism of void nucleation deduced in this investigation. 3) Morphology of intercrystalline voids produced in a variety of metals. Each set of experiments will be described and discussed separately. Experimental Techniques A special creep-rupture test rack was constructed which made it possible to apply the stress to the specimen in a controlled atmosphere of inert gas, reducing gas, or vacuum. All the creep-rupture tests on a-brass (30 pct Zn) were conducted in nitrogen under a pressure slightly above atmospheric. Either dead weight loading or constant elongation rate loading could be applied with the load measured by means of a strain gage dynamometer. This paper presents results obtained by consider ation of unstable miscible displacement within a porous medium as a quasi-turbulent displacement process, that is, a process characterized by fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. The instability usually results from the miscible displacing fluid having a viscosity lower than that of the displaced fluid. Such instability is evidenced in suitable experiments by the presence of viscous fingering. A unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement is derived. Parameters in the theory are obtained by empirical means. Although the theory describes an idealized conceptual model, agreement with experiment is quite reasonable up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1. INTRODUCTION Many experimental studies of miscible displacement in porous media have been conducted with prediction of reservoir displacement efficiency as the ultimate objective. Most such studies have utilized lower displacing than displaced fluid viscosity, scaled to potential reservoir fluid pairs. Theoretical approaches have been largely limited to unit viscosity ratios, however, in spite of the necessity for an understanding of the mechanism of the unstable, adverse viscosity ratio displacement process. An obvious reason is the difficulty of describing in mathematical form the viscous fingering characteristic of these conditions. Observation of experiments conducted with dyed fluids in transparent systems suggests an analogy between unstable miscible displacement and turbulent flow in a pipe. In both cases there are fluctuations around a simpler, mean flow behavior. An important difference is that flow behavior of interest in the porous medium is entirely transient, contained within a transition zone between displacing and displaced fluids. Transient behavior complicates description in that coefficients in the equations become variables rather than constants. In the study reported here, the analogy with turbulent flow has been used in treating unstable miscible displacement as a quasi-turbulent displacement process. The purpose has been to derive, even if restricted to an idealized conceptual model, a unified theoretical relationship applicable to both stable and unstable displacement. A relationship meeting these specifications up to moderately adverse viscosity ratios, such as 17:1, is presented. One fluctuation parameter in the theory and dispersion coefficients are obtained by empirical means. The idealized theory is compared with experimental results. UNSTABLE MISCIBLE DISPLACEMENT AS QUASI-TURBULENT DARCY FLOW The miscible displacement of one fluid by another within a porous medium is considered in this study. Flow conditions are such that Darcy's law is applicable. It is further assumed that, by the stability criterion proposed by perrine,1 initial flow conditions lie well within the regime of instability. Thus substantial viscous fingering is assured. We wish to show how this flow regime can be represented as quasi-turbulent. That is, the Reynolds number for the established flow conditions is below that for inertial or turbulent flow within a porous medium, and lies within the regime for which Darcy's law is valid. Yet flow behavior can be described as the combination of some relatively simple average result, and characteristic fluctuations that are superimposed on the simpler behavior. Stated another way, flow behavior includes the movement of layers of fluids with different velocities past or over one another. Such descriptions are characteristic of turbulent pipe flow. The fluctuations in the present case are a direct consequence of the local viscous fingering which accompanies the unstable displacement process. Should displacement become stable, fluctuations would die out. It is of particular importance to note that fluctuations such as these can interact in a way that contributes to material transport by the basic flow. The basic transport equations required for engineering calculations must be modified to reflect this fact.

Single crystals of aluminum were pulled in tension in a solution of paraffin oil and stearic acid. The critical resolved shear stress did not change with the concentration of the stearic acid solution; however, the extents and slopes of Stages I and II were affected greatly. The observations lend evidence that the weakening effect of surface-active agents is controlled by the rate of desorption of the metal soap formed by the reaction of the surface-active agent and the metal surface. IT has been shown by various investigators1-" that surface-active agents markedly affect the mechanical properties of single crystals. (A surface-active agent, for the purpose of this report, is defined as a long-chain organic molecule which contains one or more polar groups. Usually, however, investigations have considered only molecules having one polar group.) In general, when single crystals are deformed in some solutions containing surface-active agents, the creep rate, Fig. 1, is increased and the yield strength is decreased. The fatigue strength has been reported to be affected also.ll Rehbinder and his asociatesl' explained the "weakening" effect of surface-active agents in terms of physical adsorption. They assumed that a large pressure was created in microcracks which existed on the surface of the crystal." Harper and Cottrell,' from their study of the effects of surface conditions, found that the deformation characteristics of zinc single crystals were not altered by a solution containing a surface-active agent unless the surface of the specimen had an oxidized surface. They concluded that the role of the polar molecule was to remove the strengthening effect of the oxide coating. Later, And-radeetBpresented additional evidence which appeared to agree with this conclusion. In contrast, Klinken-berg et al.7 reported data which confirmed the results of Rehbinder. Using zinc and cadmium crystals which had been cleaned by electrolytic polishing, a large increase in the creep rate was observed when Lle specimens were tested in a 1 pct oleic acid-paraffin oil solution. MUCH insight has been gained into the nature of the cold-worked state of metals in recent years through the use of modern X-ray techniques. These methods have revealed the existence of stacking faults together with regions of high internal strain and have provided means of measuring the atomic perturbations in plastically deformed metals. In view of the recent increased interest in the solid state, it is desirable to extend these techniques to the study of lattice imperfections introduced into semiconductors during plastic deformation. It is of particular interest to compare the state of imperfection sustained by metallic bonding with that sustained by the covalent bonding found in semiconductors. A knowledge of the imperfections which can exist in semiconductors is important from both a theoretical and a practical point of view since they can greatly influence many of the physical properties. In order to determine the possible existence of stacking faults in covalently bonded structures, precise measurements were made of the diffracted peak positions of plastically deformed germanium, gallium antimonide, and indium antimonide. These measurements were based on the theoretical treatment of Paterson1 and are similar to those employed by Warren and warekois2 in their studies of deformed a brass. In addition, diffraction peak profiles were measured on the annealed and plastically deformed materials in order to obtain information concerning the distribution of internal strains through the use of the Fourier methods developed by Warren and Averbach.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES Because of the room-temperature brittleness of the semiconductors studied, it was necessary to plastically deform the materials at elevated temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition temperature ranges of GaSb and InSb are sufficiently low to permit hot-filing operations. Under sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of balls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists in the coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otllerwise prepared for use. Pyrites in Microscopic Particles All coals that have been examined by the author contained a varying amount of sulfur in very small globules, or particles, of pyrite. These particles are seen in a thin [section as roughly rounded opaque dots, Figs. 1 to 10. When isolated, they are generally shown to be approximately spherical in shape, with a rough outer surface. They vary in diameter from a few microns to a hundred microns, the majority messuring from 25 to 40 microns; relatively few exceed the latter diameter. They are, therefore, very small objects. Their size is best appreciated by comparing the illustrations, in which they are shown. at a magnifiea tion of 100 diameters, with some known area like the period used in the ordinary printed page. The period is about 0.6 mm. in diameter, and . when magnified 100 times, will cover a circular area of about 2 1/2 in. in diameter, or all but the corners of the illustrations. The illustrations, therefore, represent an area about as large as an ordinary period, and the pyrite globules form but a small part of the total area. IN the course of an extensive investigation of the comparative properties of several types of copper, data were obtained on the cold working and subsequent recovery and recrystallization of the copper. In this paper, relations between the degree of cold work and the course of recrystallization are developed. In particular, it is shown that the course of recrystallization over long periods of time and at low temperatures can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from short-time high-temperature recrystallization data. MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION Three types of copper were used in this investigation; these were tough pitch, OFHC, and OFHC copper with 15 oz per ton of silver added identified herein as Lots C, D, and F, respectively. The material was supplied by the American Metal Co. Ltd., and processed by the Rome Cable Co. The analyses of the three types of copper are given in Table 1. Originally, it started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. These bars were heated to 871°C in air and hot rolled to 3/8 in. rod. This rod was cold drawn to 0.204 in. rod (70 pct reduction) in three passes and annealed at 427°C for 4 hrs. A portion of the 3/8 in. rod was saved for more detailed cold-drawing experiments. Starting with the annealed 0.204 in. rod, hard-drawn wires were produced by cold drawing to 0.081 in. wire in 7 passes (84.4 pct reduction in area). Half-hard wires were made by cold drawing the 0.204 in. rod to 0.102 in. wire, (75 pct reduction) in 6 passes and annealing at 427°C for 4 hrs. This annealed wire was then drawn to 0.081 in. wire, (37.1 pct reduction) in 2 passes. Square rod was made by hot rolling wire bars to 9/16 in, rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445 in.-diam rod and annealed for 3 1/2 hrs at 538°C. It was then cold drawn to 0.325 in. rod and again annealed at 538°C for 3 1/2 hrs. Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling this material to 0.257 X 0.257 in. rod, a reduction in area of 20.5 pct. Half-hard square rods were made by cold rolling to 0.268 X 0.268 in. square, annealing for 332 hrs at 538°C and cold rolling to 0.257 X 0.257 in., a reduction of 8.5 pct. Soft wire or rod was made from all types of copper by annealing the hard-drawn material at 343°C for 3 hrs in steam. The grain size of the annealed 0.081 in. wire varied slightly among the three lots: from 0.015-0.025 mm in the silver-bearing OFHC to 0.035-0.045 mm in the OFHC copper. The annealed 0.257 in. wires were more uniform in grain size, averaging about 0.035-0.045 mm. Representative structures are shown in Fig I. EFFECT OF COLD DRAWING AND TENSILE STRAIN ON STRENGTH OF COPPER Conventional tensile tests were performed on the three types of copper in the various degrees of hardness described above. The art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being—as far as natural-gas service is concerned—of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company—considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company—the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future. Since "Customs adopted and acquiesced in, if not in conflict with federal or State legislation, have the force of positive law,"l and ('Courts will take notice of whatever ought to be generally known withxn the limits of their jurisdiction,"2 there ought to be no question as to the un-

The normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system—i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze—it is often referred to as "normal" segregation. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "liquation." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent, are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. The observations made in the present work on segregation in single crystals, and in some other castings, tend to support one theory of the mechanism of inverse segregation and definitely to

The apparent vapor pressures of a number of metal sulphides were determined by measuring their rate of weight loss when they were heated under vacuum. The calculated pressures are due in some instances to the volatility of the sulphide and in others to the decomposition pressure. FIE direct reduction of metallic sulphides, as in the precipitation method for lead or antimony, is not a widely used process today. However, it might be employed for the production of a number of metals if the operation were carried out under reduced pressures. Two general procedures are possible; the reducing agent could form a stable nonvolatile sulphide from which the valuable metal could be removed by volatilization or liquation. The other approach would be to choose a reducing agent which would form a sulphide that could be volatilized away from the valuable metal. A vacuum operation would serve to protect the sulphides and metals from oxidation and would increase the evaporation rates. A related process is the separation of metallic sulphides by selective volatilization either at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum. This procedure is already used commercially for the elimination of lead and cadmium as PbS and CdS from zinc calcines; it might well have other applications. To predict such processes it is necessary to know the relative volatilities of the metallic sulphides and to know whether they volatilize as sulphides or whether the predominant weight loss is due to decomposition. Such data would also be of value in studying problems such as the use of sulphides for refractories, as described by Brewer,] or in the evaluation of the theory of ore deposition from the vapor state, as proposed by Brown.' Qualitative statements concerning the volatility of metallic sulphides can be found frequently in the literature and are well summarized by Mellor, but accurate determinations of rates of evaporation or vapor pressures are very scarce. Kelly" lists vapor pressure data only for PbS; his reference being to the work of Schenck and Albers,4 who measured the vapor pressure of PbS by a dynamic method between 850" and 995°C. More recently Veselovskii5 has determined the vapor pressures of the sulphides of antimony, lead, cadmium, and zinc at temperatures ranging from 360" to 1000°C using Knudsen's method. A second Russian worker, Pogorelyi,6 determined the vapor pressures of CdS and ZnS at temperatures from 900" to 1250°C. The results obtained by these workers are shown in subsequent graphs in comparison with the data of this paper. Brewer and coworkers1 have studied some of the metallic sulphides to determine their suitability as refractories in vacuum. Veselovskii's determinations on PbS checked well with those of Schenck and Albers, and his determinations of CdS check almost exactly with Pogo-relyi. For the vapor pressure of ZnS the data of Veselovskii and that of Pogorelyi are in fair agreement, as shown in Fig. 1, but it should be pointed out that Lumsden7 has discovered that the equation given by Veselovskii for the vapor pressure of ZnS: - 14,200 log P9.495 is in error by a factor of ten when compared to the experimental data. In contrast with the scarcity of data on vapor pressures, the decomposition pressures of many metal sulphides have been determined and are summarized by Smithells.8 Theoretical Considerations The experiments described in this paper consisted of determinations of the rate of weight loss of certain metallic sulphides under very low pressures at different temperatures. These data plus observation and analyses of the products reveal the mechanism of the weight loss and also provide a basis for the calculation of the vapor pressure or apparent vapor pressures of the sulphides.

A beat-conduction model has been developed to study the flow of fluids in a stratified oil reservoir which is being subjected to unsteady-state depletion. To simulate stratification, plates of different metals were joined together so that cross flow could occur between strata. A description of the model, plate construction and necessary instruments is included. The data indicate that stratified oil reservoirs experiencing cross flow may be treated as a single, homogeneous, producing sand having properties intermediate between those of the layers making up the system. A technique for averaging core-analysis data to arrive at the proper average value of rock permeability and porosity is presented INTRODUCTION Although oil has been produced from reservoirs for 100 years and reservoir injection processes have been undertaken for 40 years, the industry is still inadequately informed on the problem of reservoir inhomogeneities. Stratification is perhaps the best-known type of reservoir heterogeneity. Urenl discussed the possible significance of this nonuniformity in his 1927 paper on the theoretical aspects of water flooding. Since this time the problem of vertical permeability variations has been the subject of much discussion and numerous papers. Levorsen2 simply describes the origin of layered beds in his Geology of Petroleum. Some beds are field-wide and may be traced from well to well, while others apparently pinch-out and become discontinuous. In addition, the physical characteristics of a layer may vary from place to place. For these reasons, a stratified system is not easily defined. In calculations involving oil reservoirs in which permeabi1ities vary, methods presently used contain many simplifying assumptions. The reservoir frequently is considered as consisting of permeable layers, each of uniform vertical and lateral permeability and each behaving as if separated from adjacent layers by thin impermeable layers. Other assumptions frequently made in reservoir calculations are steady-state flow conditions, unit mobility ratio, linear geometry, average or homogeneous porosity, and negligible capillary-pressure and gravity effects. Muskat3 has. developed solutions to the stratification problem for mobility ratios other than unity for both linear and exponential permeability distributions. He assumes lateral uniformity and continuity of all productive strata and does not consider porosity. This study will take into account transient effects, cross flow and varying porosity, as well as the variations in permeability, by means of a heat analogy. Muskat5 has shown the similarity of the equations which describe the flow of fluids in a porous medium to the flow of heat through a solid. Landrum, et al,6 made an analogy between the flow of fluid in an unsymmetrical reservoir and the conduction of heat in a similarly shaped metal plate. This analogy is summarized briefly as follows. If fluid is produced from an oil reservoir above the bubble point, the resulting pressure distribution will be identical to the temperature which would result in a metal or heat-conducting plate if heat were similarly removed. This means that a study of heat flow in stratified thermal models will behave like fluid flow in stratified oil reservoirs. For mathematical correspondencies, set- Ref. 6. The fluid mobility k/p is proportional to the thermal conductivity, and the porosity-times-compressibility product is proportional to the density times specific heat of the thermal plate. Greensand, greensand marl, and green earth are names given to sediments rich in the bluish green to greenish black mineral known as glauconite by the mineralogist. The word glauconite is from the Greek word glaukos, meaning bluish green. The term "greensand" as a rock name for a glauconite-bearing sediment is more appropriate than "greensand marl," a term that has been doggedly perpetuated in the literature. Because of its potash and phosphate content, greensand was dug and marketed as a fertilizer and soil conditioner for more than 100 years. The advent of prepared fertilizers with adjustable nutrient ratios led to the decline of greensand for agricultural application. The material has since been recognized for use in water treatment. Unfortunately, in spite of large reserves and worldwide distribution, the mineral has not been utilized to any significant commercial extent because no major application has been found for a substance with its chemical composition and properties. This lack is probably due to a paucity of research on its potential commercial application. Extraction of potash received considerable attention during and just after World War I. Because of relatively high extraction costs and generally low potash content (up to 8% ), glauconite lost its appeal as a source of this commodity. Historical Background Greensand was used as a fertilizer in New Jersey in the latter part of the 1700s. During the early 1800s its use became more common; applications of up to 100 tons per acre were sometimes made, although recommendations for agricultural use suggested 20 to 50 tons per acre (Tedrow, 1957). Many crops, especially the forage type, were said to improve with greensand application; however, because of, slow release of potash, large quantities were required. Certain greensands that contain sulfur and sulfide minerals are harmful to plant growth, and these were classified as "poison," "burning," or "black marls." The availability of higher-grade potash salts from other mineral sources, and the manufacture of prepared fertilizers, displaced the agricultural use of greensand during the later 1800s. During the mid-1800s the domestic greensand industry, centered in a small section of the eastern United States, grossed more than $500,000 per year. Toward the end of the century, annual production had dwindled to less than $100,000. By 1910 there were only six or eight greensand producers, grossing less than $5000 (Tyler, 1934). There was a small revival in the industry during World War I because of the curtailment of foreign potash, especially from Germany. During the later 1940s and early 1950s greensand was again recommended as a food nutrient for plants and farm crops. Agronomic studies discussed its potential as a soil additive that gradually releases potash and many trace-element nutrients essential for plant growth (Tedrow, 1957). Greensand was sold with the idea that it would condition soil and absorb and hold water while its base-exchange properties would release trace elements. For a short time glauconite was utilized in certain parts of New Jersey as a binding additive in the brick industry, and in the 1800s for making green glass (Cook, 1868). In the early 1900s the base-exchange property of glauconite was recognized for water treatment, and the mineral gained acceptance as a water softener. THERE are few natural monopolies comparable with the nitrate industry. Perhaps the only other one is, curiously enough, also an essential fertilizer material, viz., potash, of which the Germans have heretofore held practically a-monopoly due to the existence in their territory of the most important known deposits of potash salts. And although nitrates in minute amounts are found in many desert regions, the only deposits callable of being worked commercially exist in Chile. Combined nitrogen in the oxidized form is an essential for plant life. Nature provides it mainly through the agency of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. But where lands are cropped artificially this supply is too small; and gradually the nitrogen supply becomes exhausted. In order to continue farming, it is necessary to furnish a supply of nitrogenous plant food, and this is clone by putting on various substances containing combined nitrogen. These consist of various animal wastes, ammonium sulphate, the ammonia of which is obtained in the destructive distillation of coal, and Chile saltpeter. The latter is immediately available as a plant food, the nitrogen being in the required form. The other substances must oxidize before they are available. Besides its use as a fertilizer, Chile saltpeter is the source from which the bulk of the nitric acid of commerce is derived. The use of nitric acid in the manufacture of almost, all modern explosives is, of course, well known.

At the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in February, 1923, the Chairman of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence appointed a sub-committee to work out a form of questionnaire and to collect data on subsidence and ground movement resulting from underground metal and coal-mining operations, and on ground movement and safe slopes in connection with open-cut metal-mining operations. The author was requested to take charge of the collection of data and the preparation of a questionnaire in connection with the Committee's studies of open-cut metal-mining operations. This paper is a summary of the work carried on and information received therefrom up to February, 1924. The first approach to the problem of safe slopes is to gather all information that pertains to finished slopes; in other words, the steepest economic angle from the horizontal that will stand in order to uncover the ores to be mined and be safe while the extraction of the ore at the base of these slopes is in progress. Whether or not this angle is 35" or 45" depends on many factors. The number of benches maintained to take care of falling rock and their height and width are direct functions of this overall slope. The slope is here taken to mean the angle from the top edge of the pit through the edges of the respective lower benches to the bottom of the pit. If we accept this definition of the slope, it might save some confusion as there would be a difference if one took the line from the top edge of excavation to the toe of the bottom slope. This latter slope would not be constant, but would vary with the number of benches. The depth of the various ore faces will vary, of course, depending on the deposit; Table 1 shows this to range from 50 ft. to 1100 ft. The geology is an important factor, as are the climatic conditions under which one is operating. A saturated condition in some rock structure causes rock flows; in the Panama Canal excavation, slides have run on a ratio of as low as one on ten, which is a 10 per cent. grade, or a slope of less than 6' with the horizontal. Slopes as steep as 60' have been noted in the Utah Copper operations, so that a wide divergence will possibly be met. During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other industries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phosphorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater importance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appearance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements. In addition to questions of quality, the subject of cost has greatly altered the southern furnaceman's viewpoint on many things. The opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was re-deposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May16 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to a1pha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,a in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As2O3),

The Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County. This area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles in width. Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon, Marion County, in the year 1888, by Alber-tus Voight, who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring. Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon. A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County. Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops." Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits. Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used. Early Mining The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons. The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from ½ to I-yd. capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907. From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers. At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-dump skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine. The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor, mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet. About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas power- I house near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden. From the year 1888 through the year 1939 approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations. The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore 1 they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for I the export trade. Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today i only three companies are operating. These

This paper describes an important function of mining in Southeast Missouri. The practice is a necessary procedure to prevent disintegration of the pillars. Although the technique is peculiar to this district, it might have application in other mines using room and pillar method. CONSIDERING the subject alone, this paper would cover only a mechanical treatise of pillar roping. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice, it is proper to give a short introduction to the company. It is also proper to describe pillars and discuss their purpose to justify expending large sums of money to preserve them after the surrounding area has been thoroughly mined. Because the St. Joseph Lead Co. originated the practice of back pinning with wedge bolts, patch plates and channel irons, and the pouring of substitute pillars of concrete, these too, are mentioned. The Southeast Missouri Division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. is the largest lead producer in the United States. About 95 pct of the present producing mines are in St. Francois County, which begins 60 miles south of St. Louis. The entire lead ore production of this county, at the present time, is mined and milled by this company, treatment plant capacity being about 22,000 tons per day. This area is also the oldest, lead having been mined at Mine La Motte, in Madison County, in 1723. Estimated production of all the various companies that have mined here is about 7,000,000 short tons of pig lead. Method of Mining The lead occurs in the ore as galena. Galena is found either in the form of disseminated or solid streaks, of varying thickness. Ore stratum is the Bonne Terre dolomite, which is about 350 ft thick, but almost all the ore is in the lower 100 ft. Ore is mined by room and pillar method in open stopes. These stopes vary in height from 7 ft to 200 ft, depending on the thickness of the pay ore in that spot. Back, or roof, is supported entirely by pillars. In a majority of stopes, after the loose scales are mined down, the back has remained solid for many years (fig. 1). Under ideal conditions pillars are spaced to form an equilateral triangle and are as small and as far apart as the height of the stope and the character of the back will permit. They vary in diameter from 10 ft to 50 ft and are from 18 ft to 50 ft apart, measured from the outer edges. In general, the pillars are approximately 12 ft in diameter, and 25 ft apart. The spacing is very uncertain because of the vagaries of the ore trend, the desire to better support breaks in the back, and the attempt to spot out the thinner ore by not placing one in the core of the ore body.
