The Highlad underground uranium mine is located in the southern Powder River Basin, Converse County, Wyoming. Development by Exxon Minerals Company began in 1973 and average production from the complex roll- front deposit ranges from 500 to 600 stpd. A staff of six eight grade control technicians work within the Geology Department to guide and monitor production, to minimize waste and to account production to reserve estimates. A thorough knowledge of the complex roll- front deposit aids in accounting production to reserve estimates. Grade control technicians assist the mine geologist in making geologic cross sections, in estimating reserves, and in predicting monthly and quarterly production grades.

Use of electric-wheel-driven haulage trucks at Chino dates back to 1963, and in today's fleet of 38 units, 17 trucks are electric-wheel- type powered with 700 hp diesel engines. Output of these engines is not adequate to exploit fully the 1200 hp potential of the two electric- wheel-drive motors, and, as a result, Chino has been testing larger prime power sources. An earlier test involved the use and evaluation of 1000 hp gas turbine engine in a conventional Model M-100 Unit Rig haulage truck (see [ ], May 1967, pp. 57-60). Now Chino has tested a trolley-diesel application in the same 100-ton capacity vehicle, and has shown that trolley power on electric-wheel-drive trucks can improve productivity rates from 18-36% on adverse grades, depending, of course, upon haul road profiles.

I DESIRE to place on record in our Transactions a recent innovation in blast-furnace practice, namely, the introduction at the Lucy Furnaces, in Pittsburgh, of four water-tube steam-boilers, of the Babcock and Wilcox pattern, aggregating 832 horse-power, builder's rating, or 9,568 square feet of heating-surface, utilizing the waste gases of the furnaces as fuel. An evaluation of the operating performance of a recently designed pneumatic centrifugal classifier is presented. This classifier has been modified from a separate air and feed input design to an entrained solids in air feed input. The evaluation first required determining the size distributions for the three streams (feed, fine, and coarse). Using size distribution data and mass flow rates, a size selectivity curve was calculated for each operating condition tested. This curve, in turn, was characterized by appropriate selectivity parameters (i.e., the equiprobable or cut size, the sharpness index, and the apparent bypass values). The variation of these parameters with classifier operating conditions was examined. From these evaluations, the "best" operating conditions for the classifier were then determined.

The .paper examines some variables which influence the quality of iron ore pellets, and which may be modified to meet the specific requirements of blast furnaces and direct reduction processes. Quality parameters defining pellet physical strength, size structure and reduction behavior considered important by the operators of blast furnaces and direct reduction processes are listed. Laboratory results are used to illustrate how feed preparation, and pellet chemistry car1 be altered to meet these specific quality criteria and some aspects of the economic impact of quality demands on the pelletizing operation are discussed.

The Institute is custodian of funds for support of numerous gold medals and prizes and has representatives on boards awarding still others. Details regarding the Institute Awards are given be- low. The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

It cannot be said that the development of processes for roasting in Utah has been evolutionary. Some of the best systems were contemporaneons with smelting here, and one of the most primitive methods, pile roasting, is still entrenched, to the exclusion of all others, at one works. This is certainly not because we have not had sulphur, in place and out of place, to contend with, but rather because roasting has not been a necessity, we having, like most other smelting districts in America, a good share of oxidized ores.

Foreign investment in Mexico, particularly of American capital, has increased steadily since 1940. At present, however, these investments are less important to the Mexican economy than in earlier periods. In the last few years, local or Mexican capital has participated in most American investments in Mexico with the encouragement of the Mexican Government. Foreign investment in a wide variety of industrial activities has gone up in the last decade, placing mining investments in second place. This growth is the result of the Mexican Government's favorable attitude toward industrial expansion. The process has been encouraged through tax exemption on infant industry, through customs protection, and through other incentives.

CONCENTRATION of oxidized copper and lead ores by flotation has been practiced for 30 years, but flotation of oxidized zinc ores has remained unsolved until a few years ago. This problem is, however, of great importance in mining districts where large tonnages of oxidized zinc ores exist in underground mines or in dumps. Some sulphide ores also possess a degree of oxidation high enough to justify recovery of oxide zinc minerals. Various attempts have been made to float the zinc carbonate, smithsonite.

A short study has been made of the underground mining potential in the Plains region, the Province of Alberta, Canada. Particular reference is made to the possible application of longwall mining: Presently underground mining is limited to small scale room-and- pillar methods. The problems anticipated with large scale mining at shallow depths (30 m) are examined. Production factors based upon longwall retreat mining utilizing shield supports are also considered.

The technical feasibility of treating exotic copper ore with an acid cure using concentrated H2S04 is studied. Applications in a conventional percolation leaching circuit for unaltered ore and in a conventional agitation leaching circuit for altered ore are examined. The main effects of an acid cure are to inhibit silica dissolution and to increase the sedimentation rate of agitated pulps. An increase in the rate and degree of copper extraction is also observed. Based on these results and the minimal additional investment required, acid curing appears to provide an excellent approach for treating exotic copper ores.

AS the traveler approaches Chuquicamata from the seaport of Antofagasta, crossing in a northeasterly direction the 150 miles of coast range and completely barren pampa with its low, rolling hills and broad depressions, the gradual rise to an elevation of 9000 ft is imperceptible, and it is hard to realize that the smoothly contoured hills east and west of the mine are from 10,000 to 11,000 ft above the level of the sea. The US Bureau of Mines demonstrated ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate on a continuous bench scale basis. Leaching was performed at 95°C (200°F) and with a contact time of 15 minutes. The ferric chloride leaching solution was continuously fed to a leaching tank at a constant rate for periods up to 45 hours. In each test, a constant redox potential was maintained in the slurry exiting the leaching tank by controlling the concentrate feed rate. In the 45 hour test, lead extraction exceeded 99.5%, and the lead chloride produced was 99.97% pure.

A problem common to the petroleum and mining industries is the resolution into its component phases of mixtures composed of a polar liquid dispersed in an immiscible, continuous nonpolar liquid. In the petroleum industry the polar liquid is water or brine and the nonpolar liquid is crude oil. The source of the entrained aqueous phase is connate water and/or condensed steam used in secondary and tertiary recovery methods. In the mining industry dispersions of polar liquids in immiscible, nonpolar liquids are created in solvent extraction (SX) systems. In these systems the polar, dispersed liquid is leachate or stripping solution while the nonpolar, continuous liquid is the extraction solvent.
