The processing of fine particles inevitably produces slimes. These present a dewatering problem, for which gravity thickening provides a partial or preliminary solution. The paper shows the effects of practical factors in carrying out laboratory sizing tests for thickeners. Several methods of determining thickener unit area have been compared for a lightly coagulated phosphate slurry and a highly flocculated kaolin slurry. Practical techniques of mixing and flocculant addition have significant effects on batch settling data. Pulp temperature and cylinder dimensions are very important. Errors in sizing thickeners for highly flocculated slurries by the standard methods are discussed. Such methods are suitable for less compressible slurries, however. Rules of thumb for flocculant selection are given.

IN the summer and fall of 1875, the author was present during a short smelting campaign at the Hall Valley works, and having had occasion to make a number of chemical analyses of the ores, fuel, and fluxes, deems that the results of the same, and also an account of the smelting operations, may be found of interest to members of the Institute. The mines and reduction works of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company (limited) are situated at Hall Valley, Park County, Colorado. The smelting works are located about half way from the mouth to the head of the above-named valley, and the mines high up on the mountains, near its head. The three principal mines of the company are the Whale, Leftwick, and Cold¬spring. They are all on different veins, running parallel to one another, with a general trend from southwest and northeast. THE observations here presented are those, not of an expert accountant, but of one who, while he has seen considerable service in the accounting departments of large companies, has spent more time in engineering and operating. This paper is intended to cover, in a measure, mine accounting for small mines, as distinguished from the elaborate systems, requiring many persons ;n the accounting department. I shall attempt to outline a system embracing the essentials of accounting, and simple enough in form to permit one or two persons to carry it on from month to month, in sufficient detail to be able to tell quickly the grade of ore, the prices received for metals, costs per ton for mining and milling, costs per foot for development, upward or downward tendencies in costs, ore settled or in transit, cash on hand, stocks of supplies on hand, efficiency of' labor, etc. As in all accounting, there are two main divisions: that of revenue received for what is sold, and that of disbursements made for what is bought, so in mine accounting we have to consider chiefly the income derived from sales of ore or concentrates, and the expenses incurred in producing the said ore or concentrates in a marketable condition.

As this plant is the first ever erected in British Columbia for the treatment of tailings by the cyanide process, and as the ores of this, mine are of a character not unusual among gold-ores of this Province, it is probable that a description of the principal features of the plant, and of the methods employcd in its operation, may be interesting. These works were designed after a careful study of the process, in a small experimental plant, for a period of six months. During this period ten percolation-tests on charges of tailings of 1100 lbs. each, eight percolation-tests on similar charges of concentrates, and twenty-six tests 011 concentrates in a revolving barrel, were made, besides laboratory-experiments. The ore consists of a quartz gangue, containing a little lime and variable quantities of the sulphidcs of iron, lead and zinc. The following figures, giving the analyses of the ore before milling, and of the tailings after milling, which constituted the material to be cyanided, are based on the daily samples taken during February and March, 1901.

In 1948 when the U.S. Bureau of Mines began the investigation of domestic monazite placers for the Atomic Energy Commission, deposits of this type amenable to large-scale operations were unknown in the U. S. Intensive search for such deposits had not been carried out in the past. Problems to be met included scarcity of men with placer experience and need for development of new exploration, evaluation, and analytical procedures. As a result of the exploration program three dredges have gone into operation in one area in Idaho and another dredge is operating in South Carolina. Search for Deposits In the search for areas to be investigated for monazite, the first step was a thorough study of all available literature reporting occurrences of the mineral. Initial work was guided largely by many reconnaissance reports prepared by the U. S. Geo- logical Survey and the AEC. As the work progressed many new deposits, not mentioned in the literature, were called to the attention of USBM engineers by prospectors who had noted the presence of the yellow, heavy sand while prospecting for placer gold. Every prospector was given an attentive ear.

During the last fifteen years the progress made in the science of lithology has been of a very marked character. From being a miscellaneous collection of facts and observations regarding certain mineral aggregates seemingly incapable of systematic arrangement, it has become a most interesting and orderly department of science. The investigators who have brought about this great change have recorded the results of their labors, and placed at our service an extensive and varied literature on the subject. To this I have paid some attention, and partly from studying it,, partly from my own observations, I have wrought out a classification of original or crystalline rocks, which I venture to bring under the notice of the members of this Institute. The practical importance of the subject will be acknowledged when it is considered that rock species are not without their influence on the contents of the mineral veins which intersect them. Mass balance calculations on industrial grinding circuits are routinely performed during circuit design as well as during post-installation evaluation of operating circuits. Though such routine mass balances are straight- forward, a systematic approach can yield substantial long-term benefits. This chapter presents and evaluates several approaches useful for achieving various circuit design objectives and also considers several methods for reconciliation of data collected around an operating circuit. Numerical examples illustrate the basic concepts and techniques.

It is generally admitted that a god, practical and commercial set of specifications for the use of the many purchasers of cast-iron does not exist. A few good sets are in the hands of large buyers, but even these are very different, contradictory, and not intended to cover a wide range of product. Furthermore, most of them have been prepared to cover but one branch of the industry. It is strange that purchasers of cast-iron have not looked into this question long ago and demanded good, uniform cast-irou. Probably cast-iron has been discarded from many uses because of its failure in a few instances, even though the failure was due to ignorance of the quality of the iron, or perhaps to abnormally bad iron. A colloidal solution of a ferrimagnetic material, such as magnetite, in a liquid that is immiscible with and lighter than water is projected for use in selective separation of particles according to their density spectrum. Magnetic levitation forces can be created as an antigravity field when the fluid is properly placed in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. When the gradient of the magnetic field is directed downwards, the levitation force in the fluid will be in an upward direction to float sinking nonmagnetic bodies by counterbalancing their density mismatch with the magnetic fluid. Several nonmagnetic objects with densities ranging from 2.50 to 11.35-g cm' were made to float or submerge at will in a 0.96-g cm' density fluid placed in vertical magnetic field gradients ranging from 0.1 to 1 kilo-oersted cm-'. The magnetic levitation force in dyne cm' was found to vary linearly as a function of the object-fluid density mismatch with a slope equal to one g, the acceleration due to gravity.

By substituting photoelectric automatic car loading for mechanically induced hydraulic automatic loading and by protecting the process against operational failures, the engineering staff at International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s Carlsbad potash mine has developed a reliable loading process that operates without an attendant. The photoelectric control, developed primarily because of frequent failures in the hydraulic control system, has not changed the basic loading operation and physical layout. Mine-run ore ranging in size from minus 200 mesh to 30-in. lumps is dumped onto a conveyor belt which discharges into a so-called "flop gate chute" which in turn, feeds the ore into six-ton capacity mine cars. Each car is filled progressively by moving the entire trip forward. When a car is filled 12 in. above its rim, the direction of flow into the car is reversed 180º and filling of the next car back is begun while the entire trip is moved forward again. Once the next car is properly spotted under the front chute, the flow is again directed to the forward position.

A. 0. ASHMAN, Palmerton, Pa. (written discussion *.).-Mr. Newcomb's paper has interested me greatly, as I have had numerous experiences along this line. I do not think enough emphasis can be put on his warn-ing to keep platinum couples free from contact with quartz tubes, as silica shows a tendency to alloy with platinum to a surprising degree even at low temperatures. I have frequently had evidence of silica contamination in a perfectly good tube, in which there was seemingly no possibility of a reducing atmosphere. This is rather important as it seems to be common practice to insulate, as well as protect, the wires by means of- capillary silica tubing, thus allowing the entire wire to be in contact with the silica. The best way to mount a couple in a silica protecting tube is by means of double-bore porcelain insulating tubes, the protecting tube being slightly longer than the couple so as to leave a space between the couple and the end of the tube. In this way there is no possibility of contamination from silica. In no case should silica capillary tubes be used to insulate platinum wires. Mr. Newcomb states that there is still much to be desired in pyro-meter protecting tubes; this is in keeping with my experience. From a practical standpoint there is not a satisfactory pyrometer tube on the market for high temperatures; with all clue respect to the many improve-ments and good work recently done in this line. I believe that the whole future development of pyrometry is dependent on the development of suitable refractories. With suitable refractories, for example, Darling's1 work with liquid couples could be developed to a practical basis, making possible the use of base-metal couples to replace platinum.

THE indicator cards shown herewith were taken by the writer in June, 1877, from the water-pressure blowing engine of the Longdale Iron Co., at Lucy Selina Furnace, Longdale, Virginia. A description of this engine with figures, and some indicator cards, was published by Washington Jones, Esq., Superintendent of the I. P. Morris Co.,* in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1877, to which those desiring a full account are referred, but for convenience the principal dimensions, etc., are given below. The machine consists of a pair of horizontal directacting blowing engines, connected at right angles to a common fly-wheel shaft. The blowing cylinders are 4 ft. diameter by 5 ft. stroke; the water cylinders were 18 in. diameter by 5 ft. stroke as built. Both water and blowing cylinders are double acting. The water valves are balanced piston valves, 18 in. diameter, moved directly by eccentrics on the fly-wheel- shaft. Great care was taken to have the areas of the ports and passages at least equal to the area of the working piston. The object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the outlines of several forms of ports for steel-melting turnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture; of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M, Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him fur the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. 1 has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr. A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched roof of nearly the ordinary form, instead of over the top of the roof, as with the dome of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or " washing "-—to use the briefer French term. in this the gas and air come into contact in broad sheets one above the other, Fig. 5 shows the form used by Messrs. Discussion of the paper of EMIL GATHMANN, presented at the San Francisco meeting September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1485 to 1492 H. W. LASH, Cleveland, 0.-I have found in practical experience that it is not objectionable to have some blow-holes in ingots. They enlarge during solidification and have a tendency to cause the steel to rise. If they are of fairly small size they weld up quite readily, especially where they are some distance from the surface. In that way a pipe, which is much more detrimental than a few small blow-holes, is prevented. There is a very great difference in the formation of blow-holes in steel. You get one condition in soft steel and entirely another condition in rail carbon, or the still higher grades. The figures that are given in Mr. Gathmann's paper I imagine are taken from the higher carbons, as it is very seldom that piping occurs in soft steel. J. W. Preliminary results are reported regarding the design and development of a pilot scale air sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal 590 pm (- 28 mesh) containing 24% ash and 1.6% sulfur. The principle of separation is the flotation of hydrophobic coal particles in the centnjugal field generated by the fluid flow in the air sparged hydrocyclone as discussed in another publication. This 152-mm (6-in.) hydrocyclone has a nominal capacity of 0.9 t/h (1 tph) and experimental results suggest that separations vastly superior to a water-only cyclone are possible. In addition the separation efficiency is as good, if not better, than that achieved with conventional flotation cells. For example, typical results indicate that 75% clean coal can be recovered at 15% ash leaving a tailing product of almost 50% ash. These experimental results coupled with the high capacity of the air sparged hydrocyclone (imagine a retention time for flotation of only two seconds compared to two minutes for conventional flotation) may represent a significant breakthrough, not only in coal preparation technology, but in the flotation of fine particles in general.

Sampling of an orebody has a number of purposes. In the initial phase, it is necessary to define the limits of the orebody and mineral content to the extent that it can be stated whether it is, in fact, an economic orebody. Also, samples must be generated so that geological and metallurgical evaluations can be made. Finally, when sufficient information concerning the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy are known, a mining method and plan can be developed and the metallurgical; plants constructed to process the ores as they become available. With today's large, complex open pit copper mines, single sampling methods would be inadequate. Diamond drilling, percussion drilling, underground shafts and drifts all play a part in the total orebody, definition. At Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes mine, sampling and orebody definition.wil1 eventually lead to the existence of three metallurgical processing plants and, perhaps, an underground mining operation. A 30 000 tons per day sulfide concentrator was placed in operation in September 1969 and a 10 000 tons per day oxide leaching plant was placed into service in May 1975. The aim of this presentation is to historically discuss the orebody sampling that has been done at Twin Buttes, briefly describe the orebody, and discuss the analytical methods currently used to assist the geologist, metallurgist and mine planner in their respective evaluations.

A forecast of mineral demand during the remaining years of the 20th century can serve as an excellent starting point for student mining and mineral engineers in planning their professional careers. This approach of appraising demand before seeking supply is not new. of course, but, it is quite the opposite of the traditional attack on mineral resources in which adventurous prospectors, followed by practical miners and engineers, have in the past sought out and developed mineral supply with a faith that markets existed for the products they were preparing to offer. Such faith, even to this day remains fully justified if the product is gold, which still enjoys an unlimited market at $35 a fine ounce, but other mineral products must compete in markets of varying stability and capacity for adsorbing new supply. The world is in a period of rapid expansion. Most basic is the worldwide increase in the number of people which has reached proportions popularly termed "the population explosion." Conservative demographers, noting an increase from 1 ?h billion people at the beginning of the 20th century to 3 billion today, are predicting 5 billion by the year 2000; some predictions are much higher.

The Government and Leeco concluded a cost-sharing agreement in 1976 to demonstrate longwall mining of a thin coalbed, 1 m or less, in a mine near Hyden, Ky. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for mine design and equipment specifications. Four- legged shields, a face conveyor, a stage loader and an in-web shearer were selected to operate on a 183 m face. Lengwall mining began in 1979 and initially was slowed by low mining height and equipment problems. A rock mechanics program provides early warning capability and criteria for future mine design. Monitoring of surface effects is included.
