Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done ? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on t,his subject, and the results seem to furniih an answer to the question propounded above. Sampling for the U. 8. Geological Survey Coal- Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal, in car-load lots only, would be accepted for testing; also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sample from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N W. Lord of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Samp1ing.—Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations adopted for mine-sampling mas, that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine.

No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. The V system of mining used at the Norton mine of West Virginia Coal & Coke Co. was designed as a modified long wall with face conveyors, for use under roof conditions that would not permit regular long-wall methods. Engineering research consists, broadly speaking, in the investigation of the effect of the variations in a number of factors on some property of a product or characteristic of a process. The unambiguous description of the product or process requires that the property or characteristic be expressible in quantitative terms. For the purpose of practical control, it is likewise desirable that the independently variable factors governing the product or process be quantities, although this ideal goal is not always attained. Maximum efficiency—i.e., the attain- ment of the maximum amount of reliable, useful information relating to the influence of, the factors on the property of the product or characteristic of the process, for the least expense—is an important requirement for the satisfactory operation of a research organization. Obviously, a necessary condition for the attainment of maximum efficiency is an adequate knowledge of the specialized field in which the experimental research lies. While necessary, this condition is not sufficient. Proper attention must also be given to the general principles of experimental design together with the modern methods for the analysis and evaluation of experimental data. MUCH work has been done recently in an attempt to analyze the physicochemical mechanism involved in the production of steel by the open-hearth process. . This has resulted in reducing the process to a series of interrelated phenomena obeying the usual laws of mass action and diffusion. Of these, the reaction of the iron oxide and carbon in the molten steel is of most interest from a technical point of view as it con-stitutes the main action in the usual steelmaking processes. A. L. Feild1 has formulated a basic differential equation expressing the open-hearth reactions and Hefty has done considerable experimental work on the determination of a number of constants involved in the basic open-hearth reaction. In considering the application of the law of mass action. to the reaction FeO +C ?? CO +Fe, the iron will be taken as constant, as is the case in the open hearth and the carbon monoxide pressure will be assumed' constant at one atmosphere. From this xy = m at equilibrium, where x is the percentage weight of carbon, y percentage weight of iron oxide and m the weight-concentration equilibrium constant. While it is customary for physical chemists to express equilibrium constants in terms of molar concentrations, the constant is here expressed as the product of the percentage-weight concentrations for ease of comparison with the constants quoted by Herty and by Feild, and for more ready applicability to the open-hearth reactions. Herty and his associates have attempted to calculate the value of this constant from data on open-hearth heats. So many variables affect these results that an adequate calculation presents very great difficulties. A value of 4 X 10-2 was first arrived at, but this was later changed to 1.6 X 10-2. Feild, in order to illustrate the operation of the differential equation of the open hearth, has assumed a value considerably lower than Herty's, namely, 1.0 X 10-2, the largest value consistent with certain theoretical

At the present time five localities in the Argentine Republic are known to bear direct evidences of the presence of petroleum. The segregation of these localities is more or less arbitrary inasmuch as minor indications may be found to extend from one locality to the other at no regular distance apart, especially in the northern and western part of the republic. These localities are listed as follows: North Argentine-Bolivian region, Salta-Jujuy district, provinces of Mendoza and Neuquen, Comodoro Rivadavia, and the Gallegos-Punta Arenas region. Economic conditions attract us to the possibilities of developing these and other regions of countries in the southern hemisphere. Development work will, naturally, be undertaken first in such localities as present direct manifestations of the presence of petroleum; "hidden fields" may exist, but, unless discovered by accident, their development will be left to the last. The problems to be solved in the development of the petroleum resources of the Argentine republic are mainly of stratigraphy, structure, and transportation. We are not here concerned with the unfavorable climate of the countries to the north in the tropics where, for us of the "far north," life hangs by a thread ready to be severed by a mosquito, gnat, or tropical germ. North Argentine-Bolivian Region The North Argentine-Bolivian region has already been described by the author.' Geographically and geologically this is admittedly one field extending from Argentine into Bolivia. It is not necessary to repeat here the various conditions pertaining to this field, though the summary may be quoted as follows: Extending from northern Argentine northward into central Bolivia is a belt of petroleum seepages. On account of the remoteness of the district it has, heretofore, been little considered by oil operators. The regional geology is comparatively well understood but the local features have not been carefully detailed. This paper is written primarily as a discussion of Dr. W. P. Hase-man's paper on "A Theory of Well Spacing"' and presents briefly the production records, and intensity and rate of development in a large portion of the two principal producing sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming. The study includes 1350 wells, 160,000,000 bbl. production, well spacings varying from two to seven wells per 40 acres and early and late development. The general conclusions to be derived from this study are: 1. It is impossible to formulate a mathematical rule to apply to well spacing in the Salt Creek field. 2. Each tract is a separate problem. 3. Tracts first drilled produce the most oil, with many exceptions. 4. Initial production is not a reliable index to the relationship between past, current, or future production. 5. Wells which have produced the most oil in the past are not necessarily yielding the greatest current production nor will they yield the greatest future production. In fact, wells which have yielded the greatest past production will, in at least one-half the cases, make less oil currently or in the future than wells which have produced a smaller quantity of oil in the past. 6. The following is a safe rule to apply in well spacing in the Salt Creek field: (a) If the drilling of an additional well on a tract results in a sustained increased production, with prospects of making a profit, the tract is not overdeveloped and additional wells might be drilled. (b) If the drilling of an additional well does not effect a sustained increase in the production of a tract, the tract is fully developed. Second Wall Creek Sand The Second Wall Creek sand, covering 20,000 producing acres, is the principal producing horizon in the Salt Creek field; 1610 wells are producing at this time from this sand. THE analytical history of phosphorus in its relation to the metallurgy of iron is an interesting study, the progress of which runs parallel with the development of the greatest industry in the world. Without the means of finding out how much phosphorus crude pigiron contained, the Bessemer steel process would have been impossible. To do this was originally tedious and slow work. On the other hand, the " direct" process of to-day, as well as the various special processes for steel or iron, have demanded the utmost rapidity in the operations of analytical chemistry. In general, any rapid process for the conversion of unrefined metal into a product of standard composition depends upon the rapidity of some accurate means employed to control it. Moreover, in our modern practice, it is not improbable that the differences in physical properties among the various makes of iron or steel are affected, if not produced, by the use of different methods of analysis. Recourse is always had for correction to the ((standard methods," but I incline to think that these methods are susceptible to error. It is very certain that the system of duplicates would not be resorted to, if the fact were otherwise. Even when duplicated, under the most careful and skilful manipulation, these standard methods produce disagreements. In proof of statements like these, which may sound. heretical, I hope, further on, to cite some evidence worthy of attention. I do not now mean to lay claim to the distinction of discovering the ultimate corrective. That result will come, no doubt, in. time, as the product of the experience of many workers. In the case of phosphorus, as of the other ingredients of iron or steel, a great deal has been done to accommodate the methods of analysis in rogue to the growing necessity for more rapid procedures: Much of this work has concerned what might be called the incidents of method. BY means of the C-SiC thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DEVICE Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, pro-cedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; never-theless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metal-lurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and finan-cial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service. are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-SiC- thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper.

For some time I have been using with great advantage, for the purpose of determining rapidly and accurately the chemical composition of gases from Siemens producers, an apparatus arranged generally like that proposed by Prof. Eggertz; * and I now take pleasure in laying before the members of the Institute a description of the apparatus and its use, hoping that some of them may find it. of practical advantage. At the end of the paper are given some results obtained and heat calculations, with the necessary data for the same. COLLECTION OF GASES. Fig. 1. Shows the arrangement for taking a sample of gas. The funnel F, which may be made of tin plate, is made to fit the test-hole. The gas passes up through the funnel and through the rubber-tubing with the glass tube K, filled with asbestos for retaining dust,, and is drawn into the upper flask by means of water flowing from the same into the lower flask. The upper flask must be completely filled with water from the beginning, so that no air remains. When filled with gas the screw-compressors are securely fastened on, and the flask disconnected from the funnel and receiver. Quart flasks, with openings at the bottom, are very suitable, and easily obtainable. COMPOSITION OF THE GASES. The ingredients found in producer gases are: carbonic acid (CO2), oxygen (0)) ethylene (C2H4), carbonic oxide (CO), hydrogen (H), and marsh gas (CH4). The nitrogen is taken by difference. CO2,O,C2H4, and CO are determined by absorption in various liquids and by observing the resulting diminution of volume. H and CH4 are determined by combustion with oxygen. Carbonic acid.—For this gas is used a solution of 16 grams of potassium hydrate in 100 C.C. of water. 4 or 5 C.C. of this solution absorb 100 C.C. of CO2.

THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. This expanded and more detailed supplement to earlier published work1 is offered as a means to demonstrate the high empirical correlation which exists between the readily measured coal bench scale test parameters of volatile matter (d & a.f.), Hard-grove grindability index (HGI), Koppers cone bulk density (BD) and pulverization level (% passing a 1/8-in. screen) to the less readily measured full scale coke stability index. Thus, Fig. 1, 2 and 3 represent the correlated test data contained in Tables I, II and III respectively. Ninety-six coals are correlated so that 97% of the resultant cokes fall within two points and 100% fall within three points of the actual tested coke stability indices. The main generalizations which can be drawn from the correlation of these coals are as follows: 1) The coke stability indices for higher bulk density coals (46.0 BD to 50.6 BD) appear to be largely influenced by differing combinations of factors for coals above and below a pivotal point of approximately 36% to 37% volatile matter. Below this pivotal volatile matter coke stability index appears to be influenced largely as a result of changes to the coal volatile matter and pulverization level. While above this pivotal volatile matter coke stability indices appear to be dependent on the coal hardness, as measured by the HGI, and to some extent upon coal volatile matter. Pulverization appears to have little influence on the coke stabilities of the harder coals (52 HGI to 58 HGI) of greater than 36% to 37% volatile matter. 2) The coke stability indices for lower bulk density coals (41 BD to 45.9 BD) appears to be largely influenced by changes to coal volatile matter and pulverization level for softer coals above approximately 58 HGI. 3) The main empirical observation to be drawn from these results is that for coals above approximately 36% to 37% volatile matter the quantities of hard and soft constituents as measured by the HGI are important when defining coal rank for correlation to the coke stability index.

Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

CHIEF among the varied problems facing the mine-manager is that of vein-structure and origin, which is highly important as a guide to successful discovery and development. If metalliferous deposits can be traced to the intrusion of waters along definite lines, then is there something tangible for him to study. But when he is told by a geologist that metalliferous deposits are due to some other cause, like magmatic differentiation, while not perhaps discouraged, he is impressed with a vague sense of new worlds to be conquered. In 1897, while manager of the War Eagle mine at Rossland, B. C., where, previously, the ore-bodies had not been supposed to occur as veins, I suggested to visiting members of the Canadian Geological Survey that, perhaps, the structure of the pyrrhotite-bodies of that mine, which had been proved to occur along well-defined fractures, might throw some light on the similar deposits of Sudbury, then held to be basic aggregations from the original magma. Later investigation has at least provoked discussion of this last deduction, questioning its correctness and suggesting that, perhaps, the deposits are actual veins. The following extract from a paper by J. E. Spurr 1 is quoted, because it sets forth Mr. Spurr's theory of the quartz-occurrences of the Silver Peak mines, which will be discussed in this article. It also graphically describes the attendant geological features. '' The Drinkwater group of mines, which is the most important part of the Blair gold properties, and which has produced practically all of the million dollars' worth of ore, as above stated, may be taken as typical of the gold-veins which, though widespread and numerous, show a wonderful similarity of character. DURING a current program of research on the structure and properties of liquid sodium alloys, the need arose for information on the solubilities as a function of temperature of several B subgroup metals in liquid sodium. In the absence of reliable information in the literature for several of these systems, par- ticularly at temperatures in the range 100° to 300°C, an apparatus was constructed to determine solubilities by a direct melt-sampling technique, followed by wet-chemical analysis for both sodium and the solute metal. The details of the technique have been described previously.' The solubility of indium in liquid sodium was determined at eight temperatures in the range 100° to 270°C. The solubility as a function of temperature is shown on Fig. 1; this represents the liquidus line over this composition range. A cooling curve was plotted after the completion of the sampling and an arrest was observed at 94.9°C which must be interpreted as being the result of a eutectic reaction. By extrapolation of the liquidus to this temperature, the eutectic composition was estimated to be about 0.25 at. pct In. The present estimate of the eutectic temperature and composition are in good agreement with the values of 96.0° to 96.2°C and between 0.28 and 0.45 at. pct In, respectively, which were reported by Heycock and Neville.2 However, no further information on the liquidus of this system at the sodium-rich end could be found in the literature for comparison. A heavy development campaign progressed during the year 1936 in South Texas1, following up important discoveries made in 1935. Oil and gas wells completed during the year were 1473 against 704 in 1935. The drilling program reached its peak of operations in June in consequence of offset requirements made necessary principally in Duval County in the Seven Sisters, Loma Novio, Lopez and Cole fields. There were six new fields discovered during 1936 as follows: Rhode in McMullen County; Peters, El Mesquite and North Kohler in Duval County; Wood in Starr County and Colorado in Jim Hogg County. No discovery of unusual consequence was made during the year. The pools mentioned above are simply in the primary stages of development. The most intensive exploratory work during the year was in Duval, Webb and Zapata Counties. Considerable activity also prevailed in Starr and Brooks Counties. Much significance is attached to the California Company's discovery in the Alta Mesa field in Brooks County, which is considered to be a deep-seated salt dome. The Comitas field, in Zapata County, developed some surprisingly good production in a shallow sand at 900 ft. and is being followed by a heavy wildcat campaign throughout that area in search of like production. In Starr County an active wildcat campaign is in progress in a continued effort to find new fields northwest of the Sam Fordyce field, in Hidalgo County. This play continues in a northerly direction through Starr and Jim Hogg Counties. New Fields Rhode.—The Rhode field, in southeastern McMullen County, was opened in May by the Magnolia Petroleum Co. with a gas well in the Whitsett (Upper Jackson) sand at a depth of 1810 to 1822 ft., this test is located in the southeast corner of sec. 86 on the Rhode ranch. Four gas wells have been completed, proving up a gas area of 1000 acres, more or less. Development will be slow because of lack of market for the gas.

Proton irradiation of high-purity distilled berylliuwz was utilized to introduce various hydrogen contents from 0.00075 to 0.075 at. pct (0.83 to 83 ppm) in a band 0.004 cm wide. After irradiation, the specimens were heat-treated to effect hydrogen agglomeration. Observations of agglomerates in all specimens of the lowest hydrogen content indicate a hydrogen solubility of less than 0.83 ppm in the temperature range 350" to 1050°C. Estimates of the inter diffusion coefficient in the hydrogen solid solution of beryllium were obtained from measurements of the dimensions of hydrogen-depleted zones survounding agglomerated bubbles. A value of (approximately) 3 xlo-' sq cm per sec is obtained for the diffusion coefficient at 850" to 900°C. PREVIOUS investigators found that We solubility of hydrogen in beryllium is very small. Gulbransen and Andrew' state that beryllium does not react with hydrogen at 23 mm Hg between 300" and 900°C. Cotter ill et a1.' report that as-machined beryllium has an adsorbed hydrogen layer of 0.007 cu cm per sq cm of surface. No additional hydrogen is picked up in hydrogen at 0.1 mm Hg and between 200" and 80O°C, or when hydrogen is bubbled through molten beryllium. Beryllium hydride has been reported to exist in an ether solution,394 but decomposes at about 200°C; there is no substantial evidence for the existence of the hydride in the solid phase.

The data in this paper were collected to show both the volume and speed with which bituminous mines have indefinitely suspended operation while economic advantage in the industry has so gravely declined. The study was limited to the bituminous coal-mining states east of the Mississippi River, wherein conditions affecting production and demand are more common respectively to all of the mining districts included and represent about 95 per cent of the nation's coal mining. Data for the compilation of these statistics and for the construction of these graphs have been obtained in all cases from state mine department reports, except from those of Ohio and Virginia. In Virginia essential individual mine data were secured from an authentic source, but no individual Ohio mine information is obtainable, because all Ohio fact-gathering agencies are prohibited by law from revealing such data. In other states the facts were tabulated and later checked with the cooperation of Chief Mine Inspectors. In all, excluding Ohio, over 17,000 individual annual mine returns were examined. Special information was secured from each state mine department about suspensions in 1932. Accurate information was not available from all states about nine abandonment due to exhaustion of coal reserves, and while these were completed for several states, it has not been shown because it was not perfected for all states. However, the total observed sample mas comprehensive enough to show that exhaustion accounts for a very limited part of the suspended production. Wherever mention is made of '(suspended productionJ' the largest annual output of the mine in the five years prior to suspension has been taken as the measure of its probable production had it continued to operate. A mine is not regarded in this category, as having suspended, when it merely ceases to produce. The word "suspension" is used only where there is a complete abandonment of activity for an indefinite period, as evidenced by the fact that both ventilation and pumping are discontinued.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are, proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,1 that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably clue to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually -assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate -strength. In Germany the point at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both 'be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved-or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer.
