The first of a series of special war meetings of the New York Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers held on the evening of July 20 at the Machinery Club, preceded by an informal dinner. The subject for discussion was the important general one of the manganese supplies of the steel industry of the United States. It had been intended to include chromium supplies but this matter was crowded out and left for a later meeting. The principal speaker of the evening was Donnel F. Hewett of the U. S. Geological Survey, who, as a result of his recent studies of the resources of the country, ably presented the question of the extent to which the United States can furnish manganese ore.

A conventional technique used to process auriferous sulfidic concentrates involves a pre-leach oxidative-roast step. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. Surface analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and BET gas adsorption have been utilized to determine quantitatively the structural morphology of calcined pyrite and arsenopyrite samples in the range of 450 to 750 °C under an oxidizing atmosphere. In the case of. pyrite calcines a highly porous hematite product was found below 500 °C; at higher temperatures, a coarser oxide network , was observed. The surface area of these calcines was found to decrease sharply with increase in temperature. In contrast, the surface area of arsenopyrite calcines was found to follow a bimodal-type behavior with roasting temperature with maxima at 500 and 625 °C. In the case of pyritelarsenopyrite mixtures, the surface area was observed to increase dramatically as the content of pyrite increased. The appearance of pyrrhotite as an intermediate phase in the oxidation reactions is postulated to have important structural implications.

Vesta No. 4 and 5 mines supply most of the high volatile coal required for Jones & Laughlin's by-product coke plants. Until 1944 all coal produced in these mines was loaded by hand. Pressure to mechanize at Vesta was brought on by the manpower shortage in World War II, and in 1943 a decision was made to change to mechanical loading. It was the opinion of those concerned that by use of selective mining the coal would be clean enough to be processed by the existing preparation plants. At that time coal cleaning at Jones & Laughlin consisted of hand picking the larger sizes at the mine tipples and wet washing at plants located at the Pittsburgh and Aliquippa Works. A typical section of the Pittsburgh seam as it occurs at Vesta is shown in Fig. 1. The 14 to 16 in. of drawslate immediately over the coal is too soft to be used for roof and must be taken down, leaving the rooster coal just above for roof. In selective mining an attempt is made to mine the coal under the drawslate first and then load out the drawslate separately as refuse. In full seam mining slate and coal are shot down at the same time and loaded out.

I HAVE lately had occasion to conduct a campaign at the works of the Empire City Company, in Railroad District, Elko County, Nevada, which, if not highly satisfactory, was at least very interesting in a technical point of view, and which I therefore think worthy of communication to the Institute. The lead ores in this district occur in lenticular masses along and near the contact of crystalline limestone with a dioritic porphyry, and consist of argentiferous carbonate of lead and galena, the latter occurring in solid blocks, or in ribbons running through the limestone. Associated with these are silicate, carbonate, and suboxide of copper, and brown and calc-spar. Adding to this, that the proportion of galena in the ore is small, and that no iron pyrites exists in the district, it is at once evident that the ore-mixture is difficult to treat. For a successful reduction by smelting, it would be necessary to introduce into the charge : 1. The proper quantities of sulphur-bearing ingredients, to effect a complete separation of copper and lead ; and, 2. Sufficient silica and iron oxide, to form with the lime and magnesia of the ore, a slag of the required fluidity. The first condition could be fulfilled only very imperfectly, there being no iron pyrites in Railroad, nor in the surrounding districts. The nearest occurrence is in Battle Mountain, whence a supply could not be procured in time. The second condition, i. e., the addition of iron ore and quartz, was easily complied with, there being an abundance of these materials in the vicinity. The furnace of the Empire City Company, is a small shaft¬furnace, with an area of hearth of six square feet, and is supplied with blast by a No. 4 Root blower. In spite of this small size the furnace smelted during this campaign, which lasted 31 days, an average of 28 tons of ore, and 13 tons of fluxes, together 41 tons of charge, per twenty-four hours. The majority of the work done in the field of rock mechanics uses as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. Most workers in rock mechanics realize that removing the assumptions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationships for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in reducing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change for some simple geometries. In addition some necessary relationships between stress and strain for orthotropic materials will be developed. The recent years have seen an increasing interest in the field of rock mechanics. This is amply demonstrated by the number of articles appearing in the technical literature. The majority of these articles use as a basis for analysis the classical linear theory of elasticity. In addition, the assumptions that the material under consideration is elastically homogeneous and isotropic reduce the number of constants necessary to write an analytical relationship between stress and strain to two, e.g., Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. Most workers in the area of rock mechanics realize that removing the conditions of homogeneity and isotropicity will bring the analysis of stress-strain relationship for geologic materials closer to reality. However, the algebra involved in analysis without imposing these restrictions is usually heavy. It is the purpose of this paper to relax the condition of isotropicity to that of orthotropicity and examine the sensitivity of this change on stress concentration for some simple geometries. In addition, it is shown that the expression for maximum stress concentration for some simple geometries considered can be further simplified if further assumptions are made. The National Science Foundation, Erie Mining Co., and University of Minnesota Mineral Resources Research Center jointly sponsored a project to demonstrate the use of a small computer in the control of cyclone overflow size on one line in the Erie Mining Co. concentrator. The Erie circuit, similar to most taconite circuits, uses magnetic separators to reject tailings following each stage of grinding, resulting in additional variations in the demands made on the grinding circuit because of weight rejection fluctuation. Mathematical models were developed for rod milling, ball milling, hydrocycloning, fine screening, and five stages of magnetic separation. These models were used in concert to simulate the operation of Erie's circuit from rod milling through finisher magnetic separation.

A PAPER on "Iron and Steel Scrap in Blast-fur-nace Burdens," by W. C. McKee, general super-intendent, Federal Furnace plant, By-Products Coke Corp., Chicago, was published in the October issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, and written discussion by Richard Moldenke was published in the December issue. Following is the stenographic report of the oral discus-sion that took place when this paper was presented at Pittsburgh. J. N. REESE, Monessen, Pa.-I came to the conclusion that Mr. McKee must be using a poor grade of scrap, therefore his loss was high. Mr. Franchot said that there was ex-cess heat in the stack. There is no excess heat in the hearth, therefore, any heat that is used to melt this scrap must come from the stack. By using scrap in a blast furnace you can utilize this excess heat in the stack. The amount of scrap that can be used in any particular furnace involves a direct relation to the efficiency of that furnace. If a furnace is running on a very low-coke rate, you will not be able to use much; if on a high-coke rate, you can use considerable scrap, probably several times as much as that mentioned in these papers-without using any additional coke. This excess heat can be utilized with-out practically any serious mechanical and operating diffi-culties such as might be occasioned by removing gas from a point other than the top of the furnace. I do not think, scrap has any effect on the iron, although I think some foundrymen are trying to prove that it has, and perhaps some open-hearth men may have that idea.

At Cobalt, Ontario, Canada, a lake was drained to facilitate mining, by the Mining Corpn. of Canada, during the spring and early summer of 1915. Previous to pumping out the water, great quantities of sands and slimes from concentrating plants had been discharged into the lake and during and after the lake's drainage, its basin was a receptacle for tailing products. As the writer was at work along the shore line as the lake was being drained, he had a good opportunity to observe the changes that took place as the water was withdrawn. Some adjustments between the incoming sands and the mud in the lake had taken place before pumping was commenced. One of the most interesting results was the appearance of a small dome in a path the writer traversed twice a day for several months; he remembers distinctly the difficulty of crossing this. Cobalt Lake owed its existence to the gouging out of a rock basin by glaciation. The long axis of the basin closely follows the strike of a thrust fault of about 500 ft. (160 m.) vertical displacement. The lake was originally shaped somewhat as shown. The length was about 3000 ft. (914.4 m.), the width at the lower lobe was about 1000 ft., and the width at the narrows probably 400 to 500 ft. The original depth of water varied from 20 to 30 ft. (6.1 to 9.1 m.), near where the island later was formed, to 60 to 70 ft. (23.6 to 27.6 m.) in the widest part of the lower lobe. At the narrows, the depth was 30 to 40 ft. Above the bed rock was sand, with boulders near the bottom, and mud. During the building of the railroad in 1903, considerable filling was done along the right of way. With the commencement of mining operations, about 1905, waste rock and mill tailings were dumped into the lake. One of the mining companies operated a hydraulic giant to remove the glacial debris from several hundred acres of rock surface; much of the sand and clay from this operation was deposited in the lake. About 1,500,000 tons of mill tailings, composed of sands and slimes, were discharged into the lake's waters previous to 1915. Most of this material

During the past few years the combination of continuous billet casting with in-line reduction has been studied and several machines have been built with this capability included in the design parameters. (1,2,3,4,5) In-line reduction and continuous casting in combination are obvious and attractive. As pinch rolls are already in place for the continuous casting operation, it can be readily seen that a redesign of the mechanical and electrical equipment of the pinch rolls is all that is necessary to have in-line rolling. There have been numerous in-line reduction experiments conducted by simply increasing the pinch roll pressure on existing machines. (6,7,8,9) These generally failed to produce quality billets and often resulted in internal metallurgical defects (Figure 1).

Recent studies of inelastic behavior and acoustic emission in geologic materials further validate the concept that such materials may be considered to consist of an elastic media containing an array of pores and cracks. In the present paper this concept is investigated further by experiments in which the mechanical behavior of a number of geologic materials were studied in detail at low stress levels using ultrasonic pulse methods. Experiments were carried out on cylindrical test specimens of Indiana Limestone, Tennessee Sand- stone and Barre Granite under relatively low confining pressures (0-5000 psi). Analysis of data from these experiments indicated that there existed a low-level critical stress at which there appeared to be a transition in the mechanical behavior of the material. Under triaxial stress, results indicated that the differential critical stress was relatively independent of confining pressure, i.e., the mechanism responsible for the transition in mechanical behavior was governed by a maximum shear stress criteria.

Peru has produced petroleum since the early seventies, the first work being in the Zorritos field, in the Province of Tumbes, adjoining Ecuador. In the early nineties, the Negritos field, in the Department of Piura, came into prominence, and by 1905 had attained an annual production of 335,160 bbl. The early development of the field was under the general direction of the London & Pacific Petroleum Co., but it is now handled by the International Petroleum Co. In 1900 and 1901, the Lobitos field became the scene of marked activity. In 1905, its total production amounted to 75,000 bbl.; it has continued to increase as has Negritos. From 1897 to 1902, there was prospecting in the region of La Brieta (or Fernandez), on the Mancora River, about 25 to 30 km. from the coast. Small production of a heavy oil was obtained from three different sands. So far as the author knows, no work has been done in that locality since 1902. There are thus four distinct fields in the north endof the Peruvian coastal plain. The, remaining productive locality of Peru is the Pirin or Pusi field, at the northwest end of Lake Titicaca, Department of Puno, in southern Peru. The first prospecting near Pusi was done by Brown Brothers, of Los Angeles, Calif., who obtained modest production about 1906; according to reports, activities ceased about 1914 or 1915. The maximum annual production was obtained about 1908, estimated at 76,000 barrels. Peru possesses two distinct geographic provinces in which we may look for the development of a larger oil industry; namely, the coastal plain province, and the inter-Andean plains.

I FEAR that my treatment of this subject may not, in all instances, meet the approval of those who read my opinion as to the utility and efficiency of pyrometers in the making of glass, or bottle-glass. It may be superfluous for me to add that this opening statement is based on over 15 years' experience in an endeavor to successfully apply pyrometers, or heat-measuring instruments, to glass-melting furnaces, particularly the type known as tank-furnaces, and that such endeavors have proved more or less futile. It is my desire, therefore, to herein set forth the problems encountered, hoping thereby to stimulate further effort in the successful application of pyrometers. It is my desire, also, to invite criticism of the methods used and suggestions from those who may have a wider experience, or who may have better methods. Fin. 1.-GLASS TANK FURNACE. In general, I believe that the inefficient application of pyrometry to the melting of glass in tank furnaces is not due as much to the instruments as to the conditions under which they must be used and the character of the medium in which they must reside. Most of those present no doubt, are familiar, at least in a general way, with the methods and apparatus used in the melting and making of bottle-glass, or glass that is formed into containers of various shapes and designs. Most of this glass is made in what is known as a tank furnace, these furnaces vary widely in design and construction. In general, they consist of a rectangular tank-like form, built up of fireclay blocks, and range from 2 by 4 ft. (0.6 by 1.2 m.) to 24 by 140 ft. (7.3 by 42.6 m.) with a depth of glass from 2 to 5 ft.; or a capacity of from approximately. 2 to 700 tons. Fig. 1 shows the general

WITH capacities of milling plants expanding from a few hundred tons per day to many thousand, replenishment of grinding media is an important phase of mill operation. Information on this aspect of milling procedure, solicited from several mining companies, is summarized here. At International Nickel's Copper Cliff concentrator the normally strenuous job of changing rods is considerably simplified by the use of the Garrow rod charging machine, Fig. 1. The overhead crane, Fig. 2, brings a bundle of rods, weighing four to a ton, to the loading platform of the machine, positioned in front of the mill. The rods roll one by one down the slight incline of the platform onto a conveyor which sends them into the mill.

INTRODUCTION As the world's population expands and nations struggle to better their relative position and standard of living, increased emphasis is being directed to the exploration and production of mineral resources, to the mitigation of natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and to geotechnical engineering projects such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, underground military facilities, and transportation tunnels. Several topics are common to all of these endeavors. One is the characterization of the rock mass in situ, including the definition of the initial environment (e.g., temperature, stress, etc.). A second is, depending upon the use of the underground or the desired result, the manner in which the boundary conditions or the environment are to be changed by man. Next, the physicochemical behavior of the rock mass must be measured, or inferred with uncertainty limits placed on this behavior, over the appropriate range of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemistry, etc.) for the application proposed. And last, an appropriate, validated predictive model must be applied to estimate the rock mass response to the perturbation. In the period preceding about 1955, only relatively simple testing of soils and rocks was commonplace, partly because the environment (depth) to which these data were applied was not so extreme as it is at present and partly because less precise predictions of material response were acceptable. Only limited and relatively simple test data seemed to be needed to guide the engineering. At the present time and certainly in the future, as we extend our interaction with the earth's crust to greater depths and impose more extreme perturbations on it, we need a larger body of data, deter- mined under much more complex conditions, in order to make the required predictions. In presenting the subject of " Armored Turrets for Coast Defense " to this Institute, I am indebted to the Gruson Ironworks, a company incorporated under the laws of the State of New York, for valuable information, model and plans, by which I hope to make clear the construction and peculiar merits of this class of gun-protection. I wish it understood, however, that this is not an undeveloped and untried inventor's ideal, but an advanced and fully perfected system, which has long since passed the experimental stage and has been adopted by most of the foreign governments, after years of extensive experimenting and the expenditure of millions of dollars. The present seems an appropriate time to present the matter to the scientific public, since, for the first time, it is possible to produce these turrets in this country, of American material, and made by American workmen, owing to an agreement entered into between the Gruson Iron-works and the Fried. Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, where they have hitherto alone been manufactured. Although its full development and present perfection have been attained at the German works, it may be of historic interest to state that the first idea of using a rotating protected platform for large guns originated with Mr. Theo. Ruggles Timby, a native of the State of New York, who filed a caveat in 1843 for a " metallic revolving fort, to be used on land or water, and to be revolved by propelling engines located within the same and acting upon suitable mechanism." This was followed in 1862 by the issuance to Mr. Timby of two patents (No. 35,846 and No. 36,593) covering the ideas described in his caveat of 1843. An item of considerable importance to the producers of pig-iron is the disposition of the slag or cinder from the blast-furnace; and various plans have been adopted at different works to care for the rapid accumulation of this generally waste material. The charge per ton of iron made which must be allowed for the care of cinder is sufficient in times of business depression to give plants having facilities for disposing of their slags an advantage over others less favorably arranged, and to allow iron to be produced profitably in the one case and prevent a profit in the other. The varied methods employed and the means of conveyance utilized need not be detailed. It is sufficient to say that the large outputs of American blast-furnaces, and consequent rapidly augmenting dump-piles, have brought into general favor the use of cars carrying the slag in a liquid condition. The advantages of this method are the prompt removal of the slag, the reduced space occupied by the dump-piles, and the facility of converting the slag into such forms for use as may be desired. The progress in iron-manufactlire is also marked by a more general adoption of methods by which molten metal is carried in vessels away from the point of its production; and, anticipating the prospective advance in pig-iron manufacture, it does not seem unreasonable to prophesy the early abolition of casting-houses at blastfurnaces, particularly where several are grouped together; or the casting of steel ingots away from the converters or furnaces. In some large blast-furnace plants, the iron is carried molten from the blast-furnaces to the converters or other furnaces. Even where it is cast into pigs, casting-sheds removed from the immediate vicinity of the furnace-stack would, perhaps, be superior to casting in beds in front of the furnaces. The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2SO4 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen,HC03, U. V, Na, K, Ca, Mg,S04, CI, Mo, Mn, Fe, AI, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

As part of the mine permitting process as delegated by the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977 the regulatory authority must assess the probable hydrologic consequences and cumulative hydrologic impacts of surf ace mining. The U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM), in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment and ENCORE Systems Inc., has developed a user friendly groundwater model that is capable of predicting the effects of surface mining on groundwater quality and quantity. The model is a variation of the Prickett-Lonnquist model which has been modified to be specifically applicable to surface mine applications. This model is presently being used by OSM, the states, and industry to determine mining impacts on groundwater resources. The model is designed for use by the hydrologist with minimal computer training. The model accounts for multiple pumping wells, injection wells, multiple mine pits, and mine pit movement through time. This paper presents an example of how the model may be used in permit application review and how the model can be used by industry to simplify permit preparation.
