Commercial demand for gold in the United States is important. It has a large impact on the total world commercial and overall non-monetary demand. Given the present free market price and our need to import gold, it has a substantial adverse effect upon our international payments position. But, according to most recent estimates, the United States demand is perhaps no more than 20% of the world as a whole. In 1971, United States consumption was estimated at 215.6 tons out of a total of 1,412.1 tons 1. This figure is very close to the 16% figure developed by Consolidated Gold Fields as the average for the years 1968-1970.2 Surveys of both production and use of gold on a world-wide basis are not new. With the bulk of gold production in only a few countries, it has been possible to develop fairly reliable series on gold output. Estimates have been developed on the known reserves of gold and probable output at various prices.3 On the demand side, figures have been somewhat less complete and reliable. The Bank for International Settlements and the Director of the United States Mint have regularly published estimates of commercial use in major industrial countries. The IMF has issued an increasingly comprehensive survey in its Annual Reports. The IMF has attempted to cover all nations-not restricting its efforts to major industrial nations-and has tried to estimate both gold taken for commercial uses (Estimated Industrial and Artistic Use) and for private hoarding. Their method is to begin with data on free world output plus any net sales by the Soviet Union, subtract any additions to world monetary stocks (or add to available supply for any net reductions in world monetary stocks), subtract estimates for commercial demand and have left as a residual an estimate for private hoarding. The method is straightforward and simple but the quality of the data is suspect. Industry sources tend to believe the figures as biased on the low side because of a persistent tendency to underreport gold movements.4

In view of the frequent occurrence of petroleum in other parts of the world, it seems odd that so large an area as is contained within the borders of Brazil should be without this product. This apparent deficiency may be due, however, to our ignorance of the regions in which it may exist. In some places, indications point to the probable existence of petroleum in ages gone by; and while the presence of petroleum pools may be problematic, in several regions conditions not unfavorable to their occurrence exist. Yet, Brazil has enormous oil resources in the rich oil-shales in different parts of the country. Many of these shales are very rich and only suitable processes for the extraction of the oil are lacking. At the present time, only a few small experimental plants are producing oil by distillation from these shales. These plants have been the subject of recent investigations by the Geological and Mineralogical Survey, a preliminary report of which is in the hands of the printer. The only regions where studies have not been made are the upper Amazon, the Acre, the Rio Negro, and the Peruvian frontier, which really seems to be the most promising field for explorations of any in the country. In the vast plateau region of the interior north of the 20th parallel of latitude, granites, gneiss, mica schists, and very old metamorphosed sedimentaries predominate. Later, sedimentaries occupy a minor position and, where found in the interior, represent a thin veneering resting on the older rocks. At several places near the coast they have a greater development and contain considerable beds of oil-shale and may, .in some cases, offer conditions favorable for the occurrence of oil. Such deposits are found in the Permian rocks of central and southern Maran-hao; in the Tertiary and Cretaceous beds along the coast of Alagsas Sergipe, Bahia, and perhaps farther south in Espirito Santo; and in the Parahyba embayment north of Cape Frio and in the interior Tertiary basin of eastern Sao Paulo.

Ore deposits are commonly divided into two classes, syngenetic and epigenetic, according to whether the ore was deposited together with the enclosing rock or was introduced after its deposition or solidification. Epigenetic deposits, which are by far the more important class, owe their formation to the channels that permitted the ingress of their metals, and both classes are, subject to great modification by post-mineral changes in the containing rocks. A discussion of the structural features of rocks, therefore, necessarily precedes any consideration of ore deposits or processes of ore deposition. The arrangement of sediments in parallel and approximately horizontal layers is called stratification, and is an original property of sedimentary rocks. Successive strata of the same sedimentary bed commonly differ from each other in some minor characteristic, such as texture or color, which results in a bedded or stratified appearance. The subjection of a rock to pressure develops within it parallel planes of weakness, called cleavage planes, along which the rock breaks into relatively regular slabs or blocks; the direction of these cleavage planes, which bear no relation to stratification, is determined by the direction of the pressure that produced them. Where there are more than one set of cleavage planes, one of them is likely to be more prominent than the others. In sedimentary rocks, the cleavage may coincide with the stratification but more commonly cuts across it. Van Hise has defined cleavage as the "capacity present in some rocks to break in some directions more easily than in others." Cleavage, therefore, does not imply the existence of subdivisions, but rather the tendency to subdivide along certain planes.

The ability of activated charcoal or carbon to adsorb complex metal ions has been recognized for many years, but it wasn't until the late 1940s and early 1950s that attempts were made to employ carbon-In-Pulp or C. I. P. processing to the recovery of gold. Early plants using the process were those at the Golden Cycle in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the Getchell Mine near Golconda, Nevada, and at the Idria Mine in Honduras. Recovery of the carbon from the pulp was done by screening or flotation, and recovery of gold from the carbon was done by burning the carbon (a very difficult task) or by sending it to a smelter. Unfortunately at the time, the price of gold was still fixed at $3-5 per ounce and labor costs were rising to the point where these mines were no longer able to operate. Consequently, C. I. P. treatment was temporarily forgotten. In the early 1970s, however, Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota, were being forced by environmental regulations to discontinue the use of mercury for amalgamation in their 7,500 ton per day plant, and at the same time were encountering high labor costs in the slime circuit of the plant, where over 2,000 tons of slimes were filtered each day in Merrill plate and frame filter presses. Shortly before that, researchers of the United States Bureau of Mines had developed the caustic -cyanide method of stripping gold from activated carbon and an electrolytic cell (now known as the Zadra cell) to recover gold from the carbon strip liquor. Homestake and the United States Bureau of Mines then jointly operated a C. I. P. pilot plant at Lead. Results were immediately favorable and a 2,400 ton per day C. I. P. plant was then built to treat the slime fraction of the Homestake ore. (See Au and Ag Cyanidation Plant Practice, Volume I, SME of AIME, 1975. Later, Homestake built a second plant at Creede, Colorado, to treat the slime fraction of the tailings from a silver-lead flotation plant. Next was Duval Corporation's 3,000 ton per day C. I. P. plant at Battle Mountain, Nevada. Both of these latter plants are described in this volume. C. I. The importance of understanding the phenomena associated with rock fracture has long been fully appreciated in rock mechanics. This is clearly apparent from the special attention paid to rock fracture in the comprehensive papers published within the past four years.l-5 These papers present a picture of how the knowledge of brittle fracture of rock was gradually enriched and also show that what was often taken for granted three or four years ago is no longer considered as valid today. The Griffith hypothesis,6 thought in the past to predict the strength of rock, is now known to be applicable to fracture initiation only. The knowledge of a failure criterion for fracture initiation is not sufficient, however, as after fracture initiation the rock is still a useful material even possessing increasing load-bearing ability. The importance of the fracture propagation process, subsequent to fracture initiation, is thus obvious. Yet, relatively little attention has so far been paid to brittle fracture propagation in rock. As it is now realized that understanding of this process is a prerequisite for practical rock mechanics applications, studies of propagation of brittle fracture in rock constitute an important aspect of rock mechanics research. It has been pointed out 4 that it is essential that the failure mechanism is fully understood before a failure criterion is postulated. Many failure criteria have been propounded in the past on the basis of theoretical reasoning alone and could not be verified by experimental evidence. Recently, a hypothesis for the mechanism of brittle fracture of rock was propounded, 4 describing the events taking place in the rock from the initial application of gradually increased load to complete disintegration of the material.

We have studied the gold-aluminum system by X-ray diffraction and by the microscope over the entire range of composition for temperatures between 300° and 500° C. Results obtained are shown in Fig. 1, combined with the work of Heycock and Neville1 at higher temperatures. The diagram differs in important details from that given by Hansen2 in his critical compilation of the literature of binary alloy systems. This work was undertaken both because of the intrinsic value of a knowledge of the phase diagram of this system and because of the need of theoretical metallurgy for precise and accurate data, particularly X-ray diffraction data. Systematic studies of equilibrium diagrams, particularly by Hume-Rothery,3 have shown regularities that yield a certain insight into the nature of alloying forces. It has been shown, for example, that solid solubility depends on the concentration of free electrons in the alloy, on the relative radii of solvent and solute atoms, on the forces of attraction between atoms, and on the relative stability of intermediate phases. The well-known Hume-Rothery rule states that the crystal structures and compositions of many intermediate phases depend on the electron-to-atom ratio. This has been confirmed and extended by wave mechanical calculations.4 A knowledge of the forces between atoms in alloys, even an imperfectly developed empirical one, should be a valuable guide in the preparation of technological alloys of desirable properties. Furthermore, such information is basic in such problems as rate of diffusion, age-hardening, phase transformations, and others. We have studied the simple case of repeated stress, without considering impact, which might bring in other factors. This investigation has shown that steel under repeated applications of stress, reversed from positive to negative, will not fail below some fairly clearly defined limiting stress that, so far we can see, does not bear any definite relation to the ordinary elastic limit, being as large as the elastic limit in some cases and about one-half the elastic limit in others. According to one theory, fatigue is the result of changes in crystalline structure by repeated stress. I do not know of any evidence in favor of this theory. The crystals are broken under repeated stress. According to Bauschinger, under repeated stress some inherent property of the material changes its elastic limit; possibly some property of the amorphous cement between the crystals. A third theory is that all fatigue of metals is the result of the spread of damage from little localized overstresses. While I do not feel justified in accepting the last theory rather than the second, I have yet to run across a case of failure of steel or other metal, either in the laboratory or in service, that could not be explained by the gradual spread of damage from some nucleus. We have found, for example, that it is possible to subject a homogeneous steel, like Armco iron or a 0.90 per cent. carbon steel, that has been thoroughly annealed, to one hundred million reversals of stress as high as the elastic limit of the steel with no sign of failure. On the other hand, a complex structured steel, like a chrome-nickel steel that has been hardened with very little drawing, will fail at a stress about 58 per cent. of its elastic limit. Between these two we get a variety of results. In the steel work of any building, there are undoubtedly many thousands of places where structural damage was done—where riveted members were bent into place cold and where the rivets were fitted with drift pins, etc. Locally the steel in the building was stressed beyond its yield point in many places. These little localized overstresses do no damage at all; the building is entirely safe. But if this building were subjected eight or ten times a day to a mild earthquake, these little localized overstresses might be nuclei from which damage would spread

INTRODUCTION Economic evaluation of an open pit mine is similar to the economic analysis of any major investment project in any industry. It requires (1) taking into account all of the costs and revenues that are estimated to be incurred over the economic life of the project; (2) crediting the project with all the tax savings and tax credits that will be realized over the project life from tax deductions and credits related to various project costs; (3) charging the project with all taxes to be paid on taxable income over the project life; and (4) properly accounting for the time value of money for all project costs, revenues, taxes, tax savings, and tax credits when making the overall project economic evaluation. These considerations must be taken into account for any valid method of economic analysis such as discounted cash flow rate of return (DCFROR) or net present value (NPV) analyses. All economic analyses fall into one of two categories. ( 1 ) comparison of income-producing alternatives, or (2) comparison of service-producing alternatives. The analysis of alternatives in either of these categories can be made by using correctly any of five basic economic evaluation approaches which are. ( 1 ) present value, annual value, (3) future value, (4) rate of return (ROR) , and (5 ) break-even analysis. Of these evaluation techniques, DCFROR and NPV analyses are used most widely for evaluating income-producing alternatives while present worth cost and equivalent annual cost analyses are used most often for the evaluation of service-producing alternatives. In this chapter income- producing alternative analysis is emphasized, so DCF- ROR and NPV are utilized for evaluating the case studies presented.

THE COMMITTEE, appointed early in May, met and organized in Washington, May 9, 1923, and were then advised that such data as they required would as far as obtainable be submitted to them in tabulations, and that they could not be allowed to see the individual reports nor know the identity of the operators on whose reports the figures submitted were based, therefore the Committee's valuation is based on data received from your statisticians, and on tonnages estimated by your staff and by the United States Geological Survey. Various methods of valuation for mining properties have been suggested, but all authorities seem to agree in accepting, as the fairest and most practicable and logical, a capitalization of the estimated future earnings, when such estimate can reasonably be made. Hoover and Finlay both emphasize this. The United States Supreme Court says in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Co., v. Backus, 154 U. S. 439: But the value of the property results from the use to which it is put and varies with the profitableness of that use, present and prospective, actual and anticipated. There is no pecuniary value outside of that which results from such use. The amount and profitable character of such use determines the value. The Committee on Federal Taxation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, appointed in 1919, in its report states: A proper value of a mining property is the present value of the prospective net earnings, taking into account probable variations in output and value. Ingalls (" Wealth and Income of the American People," p. 97) says: The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding with the life of the mine. It is a convention that the estimated period shall not be more than 30 years.

The principles involved in lifting oil in wells flowing naturally are identical with those underlying the flowing of wells by means of the air-gas lift, and information of a dependable nature obtained in the study of the air-lift can be applied to wells with natural flow. A well flowing naturally is one in which the lifting is done by means of the gas-lift, for which the gas is supplied entirely by the formation from which the oil is derived. In air-gas lift operations, there is insufficient gas supplied by the formation to lift the oil to the surface in an efficient manner, therefore additional gas for this purpose must be furnished from an outside source. There may, at times, be conditions obtaining in natural flowing wells different from those in wells flowed by gas-lift, but these differences do not at all conflict with the main principles of gas-lift work. One such condition is met with in wells in which the gas supplied by the formation is in considerable excess of that required to lift the oil to surface; this excess may be so great as to reduce the quantity of oil that can be lifted through the particular diameter of casing or tubing that has been lowered into the well. This same condition can be brought about, however, by supplying a large excess of gas from an outside source to an artificial gas-lift well, and a study of the effects obtained from injecting a large excess into the well can be applied directly to handling wells flowing naturally which have a large excess of gas supplied by the underground reservoir. Conditions for Lifting Oil The main factors to be considered in flowing wells are as follows: 1. Submergence, or pressure at the bottom of the tubing or casing. 2. Lift; the height to which the liquid must be raised. 3. Diameter of the flow tubing or casing. 4. Quantity of liquid to be lifted. 5. Pressure at the discharge end of the flow tubing, or back-pressure, as it is sometimes called.

EVEN the highest purity silicon available for semiconductor use contains significant amounts of donors and acceptors, usually aluminum, phosphorus, and boron. Aluminum and phosphorus can be removed from silicon by adaptations of the zone refining techniques' widely used with germanium. Removal of boron, however, has been a difficult problem. The approximate distribution coefficient for boron in silicon is 0.8, so that while zone refining is possible, it is not very effective in any reasonable number of passes. It has been found, however, that boron can be effectively removed from silicon by treatment of a liquid zone with hydrogen and water vapor. There is a growing interest in the possibilities presented by the manipulation of metal powders, which justifies an attempt to summarize their character and potential value. A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently are characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. Manipulation of Highly Refractory Metals The powder process presents a means of manipulating highly refractory metals, which cannot be cast and formed in the usual melting and casting process. Tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are the classic examples of the adequacy of the metal powder process for meeting unusual conditions of this character. Copper Basin in Yavapai county, Arizona Territory, about twenty miles southwest of Prescott, is well named. It is a depressed area, and a region of cupriferous impregnation.* The geologic conditions are simple. The foundation rock is a coarse-grained granite and gneiss, in which soda feldspar predominates. There are also dykes of porphyritic rock, and a large quartz vein containing pyrites. Superimposed on this crystalline foundation, we find heavy beds of mechanically formed rocks, conglomerates, breccias, and sandstones, in horizontal layers cropping along the bed of a creek, and apparently the remnants of a much more extended formation, now denuded and largely carried away by gradual atmospheric erosion. The heavy beds of conglomerate are in many places much broken and tilted up, even standing on edge in large blocks, as if they had been lifted by some great convulsion; but the cause is much more simple, being merely the removal by gradual disintegration and erosion of the softened and decayed granitic rock below. The materials of these sedimentary beds are chiefly fragments of granite, gneiss, and plutonic rocks loosely mingled. They are the chief repositories of the copper-ore, which forms the cementing substance. This copper-ore is the blue and the green carbonate, azurite and malachite, and the ore is so generally spread through the mass of the beds that the blue and the green croppings can be seen at a great distance, particularly after or during a shower of rain, when the colors are extremely brilliant and beautiful. The copper carbonate is not only a matrix and a cementing material for the fragments of rock, but it invests and covers these fragments so that only malachite and azurite are visible. The beds are from three to ten feet or more in thickness, and, although seemingly solid carbonate of copper, rarely contain over 12 or 15 per cent. of that metal. Within the past few months I have had occasion to visit and examine the area of country in Gunnison county locally called the Gold Belt and extending from the Cebolla river on the west to the head of Taylor Park and the Sawatch range on the east. The region including the "belt" may be hided topographically into two parts, a northern and a southern one. The former is characterized by lofty mountains and deep canons, with occasional parks and wide valleys. Most of it is included in the granitic system of the Sawatch range, with local patches of the Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, more or less traversed by great bodies of porphyry and other eruptive rocks. The southern portion, on the other hand, is characterized by comparatively low, rounded hills of schist and sahistose gneisses, underlain by coarse, massive granite, which outcrops locally in small, and sometimes in large, patches. These hills also sometimes form table-lands by reason of overflows of lavas, such as andesitic breccia, rhyolite, trachyte and basalt. The leading geological feature is that of a schistose area of width and extent unusual for Colorado. These schists and gneisses are of pre-Cambrian age; but whether assignable to the Algonkian or to some older system has not been determined. The granite which occasionally outcrops from beneath these schists is, I think, of true eruptive character, since its mode of occurrence indicates a once molten, or at least highly viscous or plastic, condition. Thus, we may observe, included in its mass, numerous fragments of schist, almost like a coarse, volcanic breccia. Again, at its immediate contact with the schists, which often stand vertically upon it, the pediments of the latter are fused into the granite, and granite tongues and veins run up amongst the schists, as only a molten or viscous

TENTATIVE -reservations for the cruise to Vene-zuela and the West Indies have been coming in nicely, but there is plenty of room yet for mem-bers and their friends. The exact schedule is even yet not entirely fixed. Owing to difficulty in securing the release. as, early as had been hoped, of the Lapland, which is so particularly well adapted to this cruise, the time has been shortened. The steamer is now scheduled to sail at midnight on Jan. 30 or 31, the exact date still to be determined, and to return on Feb. 20. This change will so shorten the time as to permit many more to attend as they need not be so long. away from their business. It .will necessitate cutting out the pro-posed day at Kingston in Jamaica, and, if the steamer is -not available until Jan. 31, may also necessitate passing Bermuda without a stop. The time remaining will, however, allow a stop of one and a half days at Havana, a full day, on the Canal, Zone with opportunity to go through the locks, the Culebra Cut, and to see Panama, and the five days, planned in Venezuela: Just how many can be taken into Lake Maracaibo and the oil fields will depend on the local transportation that can be made available. It may be necessary to restrict this shore party as to numbers, but if so, something interesting will be provided to fill the time of the others. At other points accommodations will be ample for all Members of the excursion will get back in time to register and attend the smoker on the opening day of the meeting as also possibly the Monday after-noon sessions if any be held. The usual Institute rules for excursions will be fol-lowed assigning space in the order of application with members first. Guests vouched for by members will be heartily welcomed. The steamer rate varies accord-ing to the accommodations chosen. There are a limited number of one and two berth rooms at the minimum of $250 per passenger with plenty of room at $300 to $500, according to space and location. At prices from $750 up per passenger rooms with private bath are to be had. Plans are on the-basis of two people in a three-berth room. INTRODUCTION Laboratory studies on the deformability and strength of intact rocks generally involve the uniaxial compression test, the standard triaxial compression test and direct or indirect tension tests. If [al ,a2 ,a3] are principal stresses [(al>a2>a3)] with compression taken as positive and tension taken as negative, the applied stress field for each one of these tests can be represented as shown in Fig. 1. However, for most in-situ conditions, such as those that exist at any point around an underground excavation, the stress field is truly three-dimensional or multiaxial [(al+ a2+a3)] and none of the tests shown in Fig. 1 can be used to predict the mechanical behavior of the rock. There are special cases for which one of the three principal stresses vanishes. Biaxial loading of rocks in-situ takes place, for instance, when rocks deform and fail in plane stress conditions. This can occur in a free unloaded surface of a rock structure such as in the wall of an underground excavation or a rock slope. Parallel to the free surface, the stress field components can be both compressive [(al>a2>0)], both tensile [(O>a2>a3)], or mixed, one component being compressive and the other one tensile [(U~>O>U~)]. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of 25 true biaxial tests that have been conducted on cubical specimens of Indiana Limestone using the multiaxial cell available at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The tests include uniaxial compression and tension, biaxial compression and combined biaxil compression- tension. Flexible fluid cushions and brush bearing platens were used for compressive and tensile loading respectively in order to minimize loading end effects on the test specimens. The Miami orebody occurs in an altered Pinal schist. It is popularly known as one of the '(porphyry " deposits but, as at Inspiration and Ray, the ore is an altered mincralized Pinal schist. The orebody mined is the zone of secondary enrichment. Speaking in general terms, the area of the orebody at Miami may be considered as 1000 ft. long and 800 ft. wide. The vertical thickness varies from 200 to 400 ft., so that it is an extremely irregular mass. The study of the ground movement and resulting subsidence at Miami is complicated by the fact that the formation is not homogeneous throughout the mining area, the orebody terminating on its eastern extremity at a fault plane adjoining the Gila conglomerate. This conglomerate is a recent sedimentary deposit somewhat analogous to glacial drift and consists of boulders of granite, schist, and other material cemented with clay, and at times is quite hard. The fault dips eastward at an angle of 45". The original method of mining was top slicing, the slices being 10 ft. thick. At first, there was a good deal of experimenting with mining methods. Some undercut rooms were tried, and the stopes were filled with broken ore with the idea of removing intervening pillars by top slicing. The adoption of the top-slicing method in itself involved considerable experimenting, including some experiments with a long-wall system. The method finally adopted involved the operation of top slicing areas 250 ft. square, each with a central supply raise and ore-gathering raises, each block being worked as a unit. Mining operations in the Captain orebody, which connects with the boundary of the Inspiration property, were started by the room-and-pillar system, the rooms extending across the orebody, with widths of 10 to 15 ft., with 15- to 10-ft. pillars between. The intent was to operate the rooms as shrinkage stopes, permitting the pillars to crush when the ore was drawn from the rooms. It was found that the shrinkage stoping was unnecessary, so a system of block caving was adopted. This system was so successful in the Captain orebody that, about three years ago, the method of mining in the orebody was changed from top slicing to block caving, the method now in use. In a paper read at the meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1875,* I showed that as a result of changing from open-topped to close-topped furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, there had been a decided falling off in regularity of working, which we attributed to the very different distribution of the materials in the new method of filling. Subsequent experience has, on the whole, confirmed the opinions then expressed, and in 1881 we decided to try the modification of the Langen charger, shown on the accompanying drawings, thinking by its use to approximate to the distribution obtained by dumping the barrows at six equidistant points in the circumference of the open-topped furnaces. The top of the furnace is closed by a ring-shaped " bell," as we still call it, the outside of which is cylindrical and rests by the turned lower edge on the bored seat of a " loose ring," supported by the lower part of the hopper. The inside of the bell is an inverted frustrum of a cone, the central opening in which is closed by a cylindrical plug, which is prolonged into a pipe to carry off the gas.? This center-plug is connected by rods and chains to sectors on the ends of a forked lever, to the other end of which is attached, by a wire rope, the piston-rod of the blast-cylinder used in opening the top. The rods connected to the center-plug pass loosely through the apexes of triangular frames, to the other angles of which the bell is attached; it thus being suspended by four points when the top is open. THE martensitic transformation occurring at cryogenic temperatures in the bcc ß-phase Cu-Zn binary alloys has been discussed in a number of publication~.1-3 Addition of a second solute element to the binary Cu-Zn alloys enables the ternary martensitic phase to be stable at temperatures above room temperature, and the variation of the MS temperature with third element content has been determined recently4 for a series of Cu-Zn based alloys in which either the zinc content or the electron concentration was maintained at a constant value. The present paper describes some characteristic growth features of martensite observed in ternary alloys.
