The friction factor plot presented by Cornell and Katz4 and developed for the flow of fluids through consolidated formations has been directly adapted for handling fluid flow problems involvitrg both linear and radial flow. In this adaptation the friction factor plot is used directly for the solution of problems and thereby eliminates the use of conventional equations which are specific to laminar (Darcy) or turbutent flow. This upproach overcomes the disadvantages inherent in the use of these conventional equations. It eliminates the necessity of checking the type of flow occurring in order to identify the specific equation which must be used. In radial flow problems, because of the increasing mass velocity of the fluids as they approach the wellbore. the type of flow may no longer remain laminar. Consequently, it is necessary to use more than one equation in a problem and to identify the range over which each equation should be applied. Finally, in practice it has been found that much of the flow of gases through consolidated media occurs in a range that is neither laminar or turbulent. For this transitional region, no convenient equations are available. The method and presented friction factor plot are appficahle to both liquids and gases. INTRODUCTION The flow of fluids through unconsolidated media in packed beds has been treated extensively by a number of investigatorsl,2,3,5,7,8 Most of these studies present friction factors as a function of modified Reynolds number similar to those developed for conventional fluid flow through pipes. These friction factor plots are presented for linear flow; however, Elenbaas and Katz have extended these concepts to apply to radial flow. All of these studies on unconsolidated materials require a knowledge of packing properties such as sphericity. porosity, and particle diameter. Sphericity and particle diameter cannot be defined at the present time for consolidated formations such as those commonly found in gas or oil reservoirs. As a result many investigators have not utilized friction factors and Reynolds number in the study of fluid flow through consolidated media. However, Cornell and Katz4 present a plot (Fig. 1) for the flow of fluids through consolidated porous media, in which the friction factor defined as: The turbulence coefficient, P, is related to the formation permeability, K, as presented in Fig. 2. THE basic problem in the generation of water gas from carbonaceous fuels and steam is the supply of the heat of reaction, and in general the source of this heat is the combustion of a further quantity of carbon with oxygen. Existing and proposed processes for complete gasification differ in the methods employed for transferring this heat to the fuel, and involve one or other of the following alternatives: 1. Use of a steam-oxygen mixture as the gasifying medium, so that the combustion and gasification reactions are combined. 2. Alternate passage of air and steam through a fixed bed, as in conventional water-gas production. 3. Cyclic passage of fluidized fuel through combustion and gasification zones. 4. Intense preheating of steam and of a portion of the gas made, and recirculation of this mixture through the fuel bed. 5. Supply of heat to the fuel bed through an externally heated wall. Except for the conventional water-gas process using large coke or low- volatile coal, only processes in the first group, operating with steam and oxygen, have proved practicable with fuels other than brown coals and lignites. A possible exception, which has not so far reached a commercial scale, is the moving-burden process developed by Imperial Chemical Indus- tries, Ltd. The cost of industrial oxygen is so high that its use can probably be justified only if it is attended by substantial savings in other directions; for instance, the use of cheap fuel. In the United Kingdom, no very cheap solid fuels are available, and it is unlikely that an oxygen-gasification process could compete economically with conventional production of blue water gas from coke. Hence particular interest attaches to all possibilities of making water gas without using oxygen, if any possible saving in fuel or other costs is involved. The cheapest and most abundant coals in the United Kingdom are the low-rank noncaking bituminous coals in small and ungraded sizes, typically those from the East Midlands coal field, and-fines of high ash content produced in coal-cleaning operations. WE must begin by defining what we mean by the Copperbelt. This term is generally used to denote that region of Northern Rhodesia in which the copper mines of that territory are situated. The first published use of the term Copperbelt we have been able to trace dates back to 1905. The African World of December of that year contained an article entitled "The Great Northern Copper Belts of Rhodesia." The next reference we have traced is in 1909 in an article in the Transactions of the Geo- logical Society of South Africa. It began to be used generally in the late twenties and by 1929 was in common use to denote the region which today contains the existing large copper mines of Northern Rhodesia. The first of three accompanying maps is a very simple outline map of Africa showing where Rhodesia is within Africa, and where the Copperbelt is within Rhodesia. The second is a larger scale map of the Copperbelt itself. It will be seen that within the present Copperbelt there are six producing mines. Two of these are new and four are relatively established, having started operations between the two world wars. The Copperbelt also includes a town- ship called Ndola, which is not a mining town, but a railhead on the main line. This town has developed primarily as a result of the mining industry in the neighborhood. It describes itself as the Gateway to the Copperbelt and is shortly to become a refining center.

Haulage in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct, ‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* Studies by the New York State Department or Labor Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on a test block. The byproduct coke oven is the most important artificial source of fuels for metals melting. Its products are solid, liquid, and gaseous in form. The amount of coke and primary byproducts obtained per ton of coal varies with the nature of the coal. The following represents the results obtained in many plants: Metallurgical coke (over 3/4 in.).............................. 69 per cent. of coal Domestic coke (1/2 to 3/4 in.)................................ 2 per cent. of coal Breeze (under 1/2 in.)...................................... 4 per cent. of coal Surplus gas, cubic feet per net ton........................... 6600 Gas for heating ovens, cubic feet per net tor i................. 4400 Tar, gallons per net ton.................................... 9 Ammonium sulfate, pounds per net ton....................... 25 Benzols, gallolls per net ton................................. 4 All of these products, except ammonium sulfate, have important fuel value. Part or all of the metallurgical coke may be crushed or screened to furnish additional domestic coke. If producer gas is used, there will be a surplus of 11,000 cu. ft. of coke-oven gas per net ton of coal. The use of coke in the metallurgical industries has been retarded by the mental attitude of writers who disregard the dependence of coke quality on the conditions of its manufacture. Terms like "byproduct coke," ('beehive coke," "48-hour coke," and "72-hour coke" are only generally descriptive and tell nothing of the coke quality. For example, one writeri stated that in brass-foundry practice, Connellsville coke is considered rnuch superior to byproduct coke on account of the high sulfur content of the latter. Another2 says, "At equal prices for hard Connellsville coke and for byproduct coke at the foundry door, the hard coke is unquestionably cheaper. It will melt more metal per ton than the byproduct coke and requires less labor, as the byproduct coke is less dense and burns faster, thus requiring more frequent firing." A little study of the conditions under which coke is manufactured will show the error in making general statements like these. The process of recrystallization has not as yet been explained satisfactorily. Some definite conclusions could be drawn from recent investigations, such as, for example, that recrystallization is a process of nucleus formation and crystal growth1 and that the orientations of the nuclei correspond to some fragments of the original crystals, which have been considerably distorted during deformation.2 There are, however, a number of metals and alloys crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system, which form a particularly simple orientation if recrystallized as a sheet.3 Such a shect is almost a single crystal with the cubic axes parallel to the rolling, transverse, and normal directions of the sheet. This preferred cubic or (100) orientation of the recrystallized sheet has been considered to be very different from the rolling structure of the same metals,4 but there are two reasons why this last supposition remains open to controversial discussion. The first reason is academic: In practically all cases except the one mentioned above, close correlations and similarities between rolling and annealing orientations have been observed; for instance, in iron and steel sheet.6 Secondly, no deformed metal actually forms a simple orientation. In any thoroughly investigated case a number of different orientations and considerable scattering or deviations from the ideal orientations have been found.6 It is generally true that investigations on single crystals have shown that a definite orientation is approached in stretching or in compression of an originally undisturbed crystal.7 In the special cases, however, where the initial orientation was close to an important crystallographic direction that differed from the final "ideal" orientation, the resulting orientation changed very little by deformation, staying somewhere in the vicinity of the initial orientation.8 Such deviations

Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.

Future of State and Federal Oil Regulation. BY NORTHCUTT ELY (Trans , vol 118 2400 words) The Interstate Oil Compact, ratified by six states and Congress in 1935, replaced the petroleum code, invalidated with other codes by the Schechter decision This compact endeavors, first, to conserve reservoir energy of oil pools through substantially uniform conservation measures by the states, second, it recognizes the state rather than the Federal Government as possessing the necessary police power for that purpose, third, it establishes an interstate advisory commission, so that orderly production in one state is not penalized by uncontrolled production in another, fourth, Federal interests are recognized in the control of hot oil, regulation of imports and fact-finding forecasts of supply and demand by the Bureau of Mmes It is not as complete an instrument as proposed by the Federal Oil Conservation Board in 1932, but is workable, and will be effective in proportion to the support given it by the industry Three results may follow First, now that fear of Federal control has subsided, the industry may lose interest in the compact and let it fall to pieces, second, if vigorously supported by the industry, the compact can accomplish most of the conservation objectives sought by the Federal control measures now believed unconstitutional, third, if the Compact fails, Federal regulation is almost certain to be revived, and can probably be sustained in connection with neutrality legislation, regulation of interstate pipe lines, and coordination of Federal and state gasoline taxes Nearly every step toward governmental regulation has originated within the industry state proration, the Federal petroleum code, Federal control of imports, Federal control of hot oil are examples The Compact shows a trend toward coordination between the powers of the industry, the state government, and the Federal Government If this arrangement fails through lack of interest by the oil industry, the next step is likely to be absorption by the Federal Government of the other two factors involved in the situation

BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

The high temperature properties of Fe-Cr-Co-Ni base alloys and the effects of hardening element additions on these properties are rationalized on the basis of general principles of alloying. DURING the past few years the base elements in high temperature austenitic alloys have gradually been changed from iron-rich materials to nickel-rich, then to cobalt-rich and more recently to various iron, cobalt, and nickel combinations, all with an approximately constant chromium content of 20 pct. Concurrently, the hardening additions of the incongruous* elements, have been shifted from small amounts of a single element to various ratios of molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, carbon, titanium, and aluminum with the percentages of these constituents continually increasing. It has been known that the typical soft high temperature alloy (such as Inconel) consisted of face-centered cubic austenite, but the effect of varying the composition of the base elements, iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt, has not been broadly analyzed. Therefore, it was reasoned that the first major problem in the understanding of the properties or the further development of high temperature alloys was to study systematically the effect of composition upon the mechanical properties of face-centered cubic Fe-Ni-Co-Cr austenitic solid solutions. The matrix of the strong high temperature alloys (such as Inconel X) is usually also a face-centered cubic solid solution of iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt but with additional phases which can be generally classified as intermetallic compounds and carbides. It is usually observed that combinations of the hardening elements, tungsten, molybdenum, columbium, tantalum, titanium, aluminum, carbon, and others have been used in these strong high temperature alloys. During the past fen- years, the requirements for steel have been raised so high that soundness is more important than ever before. The old practice mas to make steel ingots of suffciently large sections to permit a considerable reduction of area in rolling and hammering to a given size, relying on the fact that by such rolling and hammering all cavities will be squeezed together and practically eliminated. The finished sizes, if found by inspection of the surface to be faultless, were therefore pronounced to be sound. But when such steel is " worked up," the manufacturer is surprised and disappointed to find that it splits, or that streaks and seams make the product unmarketable. Large sections, such as rails, beams or heavy forgings, may, within certain limits, be sufficiently strong, even if the sides of the cavities are only squeezed, and not welded, together. But it is well known that, in the interior of heavy articles, under certain conditions, forging may develop small streaks into large cavities. Small sections, steel for ordnauce and tubes, and numberless articles in the tool-trade, always show up the defects. It may be doubted whether cavities in steel ingots can ever be completely welded. The old theory is, that the silver-clear blow-holes, without the blue oxide, can be welded by suffcient working. They are, however, not empty, but are filled with carbonic oxide. It is admitted that the " blue " cavities, resulting from air mechanically drawn down into the mold during the casting, can never be welded, because the oxide does not melt, and there would be no escape for it if it did. The only way in which steel can be made satisfactory for the above-named particular purposes is by having it " dead molten." But then the trouble of piping is encountered. As is well known, a pipe is the result of the contraction of the liquid interior after the surface of the ingot has become solid by contact with the mold. When this contraction is partly

THE iron fields described here are located in the Iron Springs and Pinto Mining districts, Iron County, Utah. This region is in southwestern Utah, about 260 miles south from Salt Lake City, and is reached by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad of the Union Pacific system. The iron fields lie at an elevation of 5500 to 7500 ft. above sea level, and are essentially desert in character. They are covered with a light growth of sage brush, piñon pine, and scattered cedar. Weather conditions are unusually favorable for all-year mining operations, the winters being mild with little or no snow; and the summers not excessively hot, the temperature rarely rising to 100° during the day, while the nights are invariably cool. The iron-ore bearing area extends from the Iron Springs district to the Iron Mountain mining district, being approximately 25 miles long in a northeast-southwest direction, and from 1 to 3 miles wide in a northwest-southeast direction. In the Iron Springs and Pinto mining districts, the ore occurs at various points around three sides of Granite Mountain and Iron Mountain. This is readily understood by reference to Figs. 1-4. These mountains are composed of andesite, which has been forced up through the surrounding sedimentary formation, in the form of laccoliths. An extensive report on the geology of these districts was made by Leith and Harder,1 who state: The three dominating geological features of the district are three large andesite laccoliths which constitute the Three Peaks, Granite Mountain, and Iron Mountain; lying in a northeast-southwest line across the area in question. Three unconformable sedimentary series, aggregating 4000 ft. in thickness, outcrop in successive rings around these laccoliths, dipping outward asymmetrically, very steeply at the contact, less steeply further away. Still farther from the laccoliths, lava-flows 2000 ft. thick rest in nearly horizontal attitudes on the tilted sedimentary rocks. These general relations are modified by faulting. All of the rock formations of the district are more or less covered on the middle and lower slopes by unconsolidated and partly consolidated erosion debris, both aqueous and subaerial, which spreads out on the lower ground to make the deserts.

INTRODUCTION Epithermal silver-gold deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. These deposits are found in all rock types, but historically, the most important deposits occur as veins in volcanic rocks (e.g., Creede, Colorado; Pachuca, Mexico) and as replacements in sedimentary sequences (e.g., Mercur, Utah; Carlin, Nevada). Increases in the open-market prices for silver and gold in the last few years have resulted in renewed interest in precious metals and the economic viability of large-tonnage low-grade deposits. These bulk-mineable deposits form as replacements in permeable horizons or as stockworks in the up- per parts of otherwise bonanza-type hydrothermal systems and newly recognized systems that erupted onto the surface as hot springs, fumaroles, or geysers. Large tonnage low-grade de- posits were an unconventional resource prior to price increases; however, now they constitute one of the main sources of precious metals in the United States and the importance is growing worldwide. This paper presents conceptual geologic- geochemical models of epithermal precious-metal deposits derived from studies of productive deposits throughout the world. Much of the data presented is not new. However, the interpretation of the data in terms of current concepts of hydrothermal processes is new. This paper deals with idealized and general ore-forming mechanisms, and no attempt is made either to explain the origin of the different chemistries of ore- forming fluids or to examine all of the variations in specific deposits due to local structural controls and host-rock compositions.

THE milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I have thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value and interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern ; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a wet stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulphides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80-stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. This mill treats the ore from the Ontario mine, ore which at present is very base, being composed of zinc, lead, and silver sulphides and silver chloride in a quartz gangue. This ore has become baser as the mine attained greater depth, though the vein holds its own, or rather increases, both in thickness and richness. This study is an investigation on using hydrogen peroxide for tank-leaching of uranium with sulfuric acid. The optimum sulfuric acid concentration was found to be 0.03 mole 11 -'for a 25% pulp density suspension. The order of reaction with respect to sulfuric acid concentration was found to be ns0.75. The best results vith hydrogen peroxide were obtained at a 4.64 molar ratio of 6202 to U in the ore. The order of reaction was found to be zero with respect to hydrogen peroxide concentration. The theoretical maximum rate effect of Hz02 on uranium extraction was derived as Vm = 8.15 x mole &-'min-'. The highest rate experimentally attained was 8.09 x mole kL'min-'. It was found that the uranium extrac- tion was not affected by the pulp density up to the 50% used in this study. However, the final yieldswere significantly higher (over 90%) for leaches carried out in the presence of Hz02 than (less than 90%) for leaches carried out in the absence of H202. The reaction was found to follow a first order course with respect to substrate concentration (pulp density) regardless of the presence of H202. The effect of temperature was more explicit at moderate tempetatures (30 to 55 C) than at lower (10 C) or at higher (70 C) temperatures. At this latter temperature an almost complete extraction was realized even without H202. The apparent activation energies were found to be AEa = 2.68 kJ mole-' in the absence of H202, 0.5 kJ mole-'with Hz02 at 40 C to 70 C. and 4.72 kJ mole-' with Hz02 at 10 C to 40 C. All these activation energy values suggested that the uranium extraction process is diffusion controlled regardless of the presence of H202. Further, the change in activation energy in the presence of Hz02 indicates the possibility of change in the reaction mechanisms at lower and higher temperatures.

During the last 15 years much attention has been given to the " contact-metamorphic" ore deposits which mainly occur in limestone close to intrusive contacts. In general, these deposits are characterized by the association of magnetite and simple sulphides with the so-called L'contact-metamorphic" silicates. These silicates comprise garnet, epidote, vesuvianite, tremolite, wollastonite, diopside, hedenbergite, ilvaite, and many other rarer forms. The contact-metamorphic zones contain also in places minerals with boron, fluorine, and chlorine, like axinite, tourmaline, danburite, fluorite, and scapolite. There is also more or less quartz and coarsely recrystallized calcite. The simple sulphides embrace pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, zincblende, more rarely arsenopyrite. On the whole, sulphantimonides and sulph-arsenides are rare. Deposits of magnetite or chalcopyrite or of both are most common. The deposits have an irregular or rudely tabular form, following main contacts, dike contacts, or stratification planes; they rarely extend for more than 1,500 or 2,000 ft. from the contact; far more commonly they only reach a distance of a few hundred feet from that surface. The deposits are usually formed by replacement of limestone, or allied calcareous rock. Apparently they are found both in relatively pure and in impure carbonate rock. The deposits are geoiogical bodies of a chemical and mineralogical character differing greatly from the adjoining intrusive rock and from the unaltered limestone. They are rich in silica and iron, with more or less of lime, magnesia, alumina, sulphur, and rarer metals like copper. The so-called contact-metamorphic silicates which form the gangue usually are coextensive with the metallic minerals, though of course not necessarily with the merchantable ore. All opinions agree in holding the deposits of epigenetic origin, later than the inclosing limestone. Regarding the origin of the metals and the genesis of the ores there are several opinions. 1. It is claimed that the first mining of copper by Americans in Arizona was done at Ajo, near the Mexican border, in 1854,* a year after this region had been added to the United States, under the terms of the Gadsden purchase. A group of adventurers, organized at Los Angeles under the name of the Arizona Mining & Trading Company, came, to the district. This party of prospectors consisted of 20 men, led by Major B. Allen, J. D. Wilson, and William Blanding. † They went first to Yuma, where the party divided, some of them going southward into Mexico while the remainder took the trail to Tinaja Alta, where they heard of the copper deposits of Ajo, which is 85 miles southeast from Yuma.‡ They found attractive outcrops of copper ore, and set to work energetically, but their operations suffered many interruptions, because that part of the country was still controlled by the Mexicans, who were uncertain about the exact position of the new international boundary. The Mexicans tried to expel them, but they held their ground. The first shipment of ore, consisting of native copper and cuprite, came from what is now the western end of of the New Cornelia workings; it was hauled in ox-carts to San Diego, 400 miles across the desert. § Later shipments were hauled to Yuma and floated on barges down the Colorado river to the Gulf of California, whence the ore was loaded on

As is well known, the alloys of iron containing 18 ± per cent chromium, 8* per cent nickel and less than 1.2 per cent carbon exhibit the same allotropic modifications as iron. The face-centered cubic or gamma phase is stable at high temperatures and the body-centered cubic or alpha ferrite is presumably stable at room temperature. The transformation from the gamma phase to the alpha phase in alloys of the above composition (18-8 or stainless steel) is sluggish; even moderately rapid cooling permits the retention of the gamma phase. Cold-work, however, causes the transformation from gamma to alpha to occur at room temperatures. It is difficult, nevertheless, to induce complete transformation regardless of the method of cold-working. Since metallographic polishing is very effective in transforming the surface austenite to ferrite, as indicated by the magnetic studies of Buehl and Wulff,1 it was decided to investigate the phenomenon by electron diffraction methods. Apparatus The apparatus used (Fig. 1) was a hot-filament type employing movable slits, similar to that described by Germer.2 The sample-to-photographic plate distance was 69 cm. and the accelerating voltage 30 kv. Since electrons do not in general follow geometrical paths, it is necessary that either the electron source or the sample be movable in a plane normal to the beam. In this case the sample is fixed and the electron source is movable. The source is adjusted until the shadow of the sample appears in the brightest part of the beam as viewed on the fluorescent screen, then the slits composing the two pinholes are inoved into position one by one. The system is evacuated by means of a mercury diffusion pump backed up with a Cenco Hypervac oil pump. Pressures lower than 10- mm. of Hg are read on a calibrated ionization gauge.

The stability of a rock structure depends primarily upon the extent to which fracture develops within the structure, The prediction of the extent of potential fracture, the first step in the study of fracture development, involves a knowledge of both the stress distribution in the structure and the criterion which governs rock fracture under various stress conditions. While a great deal of research effort has been devoted to the development of techniques for analyzing the stresses in mining and civil engineering structures1-3 and to the investigation of the fracture mechanism of rock 4-6 relatively little attention has been paid to the application of available knowledge to the solution of practical engineering problems. This paper describes a photoelastic technique for the determination of potential fracture zones in certain types of rock structures. A practical example, based upon a problem which might be encountered in designing the layout of deep-level mine excavations, is given as an illustration of the application of this technique. STRESS ANALYSIS AND ROCK FRACTURE In deciding upon the technique to be used for the solution of a problem involving the prediction of rock fracture it is necessary to consider: 1) What type of stress information is required to satisfy the fracture criterion for rock; anti 2) How this information can most conveniently be obtained. THE objects of this paper are: 1. To give cost data on drilling obtained at the North Star mine in California; 2. To describe the methods of testing drills employed there, giving the results of shop tests, and the correlated data obtained underground; 3. To demonstrate that these tests form a satisfactory basis upon which to judge rock drills. The rock at this mine is either close-grained diabase in the upper levels, or tough grano-diorite in the lower levels. The vein, which has an average dip of 23°, consists of about 5 ft. of "formation" lying between walls of unaltered country rock. Of the 5 ft., solid quartz and stringers make up 18 in. of pay ore. The formation, which consists of but slightly altered country rock, is almost as hard as the unaltered walls. From 4 to 42 ft. is sent to the mill. One-third of the holes are drilled in the quartz; two-thirds in the formation. The holes are about 42 ft. deep and break on the average of 1.15 tons per hole. The average number of holes per stope drill shift is at present 5.65. The number of drill shifts throughout the mine in 1913, was 18,679, and the cost of labor for drilling, power, supplies, upkeep of machines and air lines, tool sharpening, and distribution, amounted to 33 per cent. of total mining expense. To do this work there are in commission 43 No. 12A, three No. 17V and eight No. 16V Waugh stopers, three Jackhamers, two Waugh pluggers, and 17 No. 8 ,and two No. 7 water Leyners. For the past three years a record has been kept of the repairs on each machine and number of shifts operated by it. The figures given in Tables I and II for the cost of repairs per drill shift have been taken from this record. The underground air pressure is about 90 lb. The air consumption per drill shift was measured by, aerometers. The leakage of pipe lines between compressor and meter is not included. From the number of pieces of steel sharpened for each type of drill during the year the average used per drill shift has been ascertained. For other supplies the figures given represent a year's average.
