HAVING described and taught you the method of assaying silver for gold in the preceding chapter, and therein having proceeded in the order and Drover wav followed in the working of quantities of gold and silver, I could have fled this task of describing to you the first part of parting. In truth, there is no other difference in the method of arriving at the end except in respect to certain precautions that must be taken against the dangers causing loss. In order that you may guard against these, I shall repeat the procedure completely, in addition to the second part of this art, which is the method of reducing the silver to its body.

As was true with many mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Co. followed with interest the successful application of AN-FO as an explosive in coal stripping, construction, open-pit mining, and finally in underground salt mines. Since Tennessee Copper's operations required about 1,250,000 lb of dynamite annually, the potential savings in explosives costs that could be realized by switching to AN-FO could not be ignored. From a cautious start, AN-FO is now being used for stoping, development work and secondary blasting in all mines of Tennessee Copper Co. AN-FO accounts for 80% of the explosives used in such work. Fragmentation, fumes, crew acceptance, and cost savings have been quite attractive without any decrease in safety.

A few months ago I had the honor of addressing the Society of Mining Engineers annual banquet in Sun Francisco. I have since been asked to amplify some of the remarks I made at that time concerning the management policies of the Kaiser organization and various aspects of our corporate thinking. This is a difficult task for an insider like myself. I look at the different companies, and the men who run them, and it is hard to think of these men in terms of policy or procedure. Actually I prefer the term management philosophy to either policy or procedure. My father, Henry J. Kaiser, is not only the founder but the guiding spirit of our organization. His philosophy, and in turn that of the organization, centers around two concepts, service and accomplishment.

NUMEROUS ore deposits remain to be discovered. Many exposures of favorable host rock bodies within mineral provinces have not been adequately scrutinized geologically-the ore potential in buried portions of such rock bodies is enormous. Inasmuch as the more obvious deposits have been found, exploration has become more scientific and more expensive. Yet discovery continues to be very rewarding if exploration is intelligently approached. Although a number of exceptions can be cited, systematic geological exploration for ore on a significant scale has developed during the last two decades. So rapid has been the development of systematic exploration that a comparison of modern programs with those as recent as 1940, would suggest that many large mining companies and various Government agencies were hardly in the exploration business at that time. Use of high-expansion foam for controlling mine fires was first made known in a published announcement in June, 1956, by representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Buxton, England. In 1957, the United States Bureau of Mines, interested in this new method of controlling mine fires which could not be approached or extinguished by conventional methods, began to investigate the practicability of the foam-plug technique under American mining conditions at its experimental coal mine in Bruceton, Pa. Results of these experiments proved the potentialities of controlling mine fires with foam. The USBM conducted numerous demonstrations at its experimental mine to show this foam-plug method to groups of coal mining men, many of which were impressed by the action of the foam as it moved away from the netting toward an open fire and its ability to control the fire in a very short time.

The minimum sulphur level which can be attained during fluid bed roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates is largely determined by the residual sulfates of calcium, magnesium, and zinc. The fractional conversion of these elements to their respective sulfates is derived from semi- empirical relationships, and multiple regression analysis is used to fit the relationships to experimental data from a commercial fluidized bed roaster. The resulting equation shows that the calcine leaving the roaster contains almost no zinc sulfate, nearly all of the calcium is present as calcium sulfate, and the amount of magnesium sulfate formed is primarily dependent upon the roaster temperatures.

This paper describes a computer program which calculates material balances for complex steady-state material flow circuits encountered in mineral processing. The program determines mass flows in the various process streams of a flowsheet from multicomponent analytical data obtained from samples of the streams. The program, Metallurgical Balance System (MBS), has been used extensively in treating Pilot plant test data, in production evaluation and control, and in plant design. The program performs well even on ill-conditioned data. Input to the program is easily accomplished by unskilled personnel and the output appears in well-formatted tables.

Mine backfilling is a desirable method for the disposal of retorted oil shale. Hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic transport and stowing methods were investigated, and the mechanical transport and stowing method using conveyors was selected as the most promising system. Transport of retorted oil shale at the rate of 2700 t/h (3000 stph) to the backfill level, situated about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface, with skips or conveyors is uneconomic. Hence, borehole transport utilizing gravity flow was investigated. This Paper describes the theory of flow, flow properties of retorted oil shale, and the design of a borehole and hopper system.

Three rapid cold bonding production methods wing sponge iron powder as a binder for low temperature pellets have been successfully developed. These methods differ from ordinary bonding by the elimination of salt and other catalyzers, equipment corrosion and environmental pollution. Experiments show that these pellets have good metallurgical properties. A semi-industrial test has proven the laboratory results, with the continuous and stable production of metallic pellets. These methods replace traditional high temperature firing of oxidized pellets for direct reduction. As a result, the plant for oxidized pellets can be saved and substituted for grate in the grate-kiln system. Thus, 20% of the investment could be saved, and production cost may also be decreased because the production of cold bonding pellets does not need additional space.

Basic electric-are furnace steel production mainly involves the use of two separate types of slags. The first, known as the "melt down" or oxidizing slag, which is in most cases removed from the furnace mechanically, and the heat finished under the second or deoxidizing slag, which is commonly known as the "finishing slag.'' The melt down slag is formed by the addition of lime or limestone to the charge, which combines with the oxides formed during the melting period and the product of any bottom erosion that may take place.

During 1935 there were drilled in North Central Texas 1071 wells, of which 565 were dry holes, 469 were oil wells with an initial production of 43,766 bbl. and 37 were gas wells with an initial production of 129,332,000 cu. ft. Production has been 14,180,042 bbl., or a daily average of 38,849 bbl. In Table 1 are listed the various pools of the district. Most of the smaller pools are of minor importance and are merely productive spots. Numerous other similar spots might have been listed as pools but their production is included in other fields. There are a few flowing wells but practically all of the wells are being pumped. The estimated potential is about 50,000 bbl. and the allowable production is based on the Texas Marginal Well Law. In Table 2, wildcat wells that have resulted in the discovery of pools or important extensions to old pools or that have contributed to the geological information of the area are listed.
