Oil activities and the petroleum industry in general have suffered severely in this country as a result of present war conditions. War has imposed a very heavy and unpleasant burden on the shoulders of those whose duty it is to keep .Argentina supplied with the necessary oil to meet industry's growing demands. Since 1940, imports of manufactured products from Europe and the United States have fallen to a minimum, making it necessary to manufacture as many of them as possible locally. This has brought about the establishment of many new industries and the enlargement of already existing plants, creating new demands for fuel that drain heavily the country's stocks, which already were overtaxed because of the diminished supply imported. To cope with this problem, a plan for an intensification of oil-field activities was drawn up by Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Government Oil Fields) which included the drilling of many new

Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. This paper describes the computer-assisted development and implementation of new written examinations for persons desiring to become certified as underground or surface mine electricians in the State of West Virginia under the certification program defined by the WV Department of Mines and the Board of Miner Training, Education and Certification. The procedures used to develop and validate the new certification tests have simplified the administration of the new tests. Future developments in mine electrical work can also be easily incorporated into the certification program by augmenting the existing computerized pool of test questions prior to computer-production of future test forms. Most important, computerization now facilitates continual evaluation of the certification program, to contribute to greater safety in mine electrical work in West Virginia.

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

At the Vesta mines of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. on the Monongahela River, 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, JCM Joy continuous miners and 6-SC shuttle cars are used for pillar extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. The entire output of the mine goes into coke production for blast furnace operation. Because this coal, which has high metallurgical qualities, is close to the place where it is ultimately used and because supplies with these properties are being rapidly depleted, complete recovery is essential wherever possible. With the introduction of the continuous miner into the Vesta mines, therefore, it was necessary to plan a project which would facilitate development and provide for future total recovery. Use of continuous miners under varying conditions has necessitated changes with regard to roof action, method of development, method of pillar attack, and innovations in mining. In the following pages these changes will be discussed.

The Meadow River No. 1 preparation plant, owned by Sewell Coal Co. which is a subsidiary of the Pittston Co., was commissioned in the spring of 1974. A survey of the environmental noise levels was conducted, and the dominant noise sources identified. An engineering program was initiated to reduce the prevailing levels to a point that the operator's exposure would be within compliance with the MESA regulation for ear protection. The program was continued until compliance was achieved and the attenuation factors for each abatement device recorded. The highlights of this program will be presented with a discussion of the practicality of the devices utilized.

Total grinding mill system life is dependent upon the original selections and specifications of its components: the mill, its drive, drive motor, motor control, and power system. This paper discusses the complex considerations involved and the critical decisions which must be made by the buyer, the mill manufacturer, and by the gear vendor during the proposal and ordering stages. Interrelations between the mill manufacturer and the gear vendor, application of ACMA standards, how drive standards and specifications are refined through steady-state and computer-simulated torsional analyses are included, along with correlational field testing, as demands for larger sizes challenge the current state of the art.

A hemispherical, constant volume drop with forced internal circulation was considered as a model approximating a real drop at a similar stage of formation Axially symmetric steady flow within a drop contaminated by surfactants was described by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations written in terms of a meridian plane stream function Rotational flow occurred inside the drop above a computed Reynolds number of 5.8, and the change in interfacial flow caused by imposing a surface-tension gradient at the surface had a significant effect on the internal flow Although the work is quite fundamental in nature, the rotational flow described in the paper is responsible for much of the bulk transport of solute to the interface in hydrometallurgical processes such as solvent extraction.

Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal, and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multigaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multivariate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar, and reasonably accurate, estimates for recoverable reserves.

The phosphate ore, or matrix, is a mixture of white pebbles of phosphate, of all sizes but mostly minus I to 1 1/4-in. diameter, in a matrix that varies from nearly all silica-sand gangue to a mixture of pebble, sand and clay. There is an occasional streak of hard pan of sand cemented with iron oxide, which can be drilled without much difficulty.

DIFFERENTIAL thermal analysis measurements have been used to determine the ZnTe-In2Te3 pseudo-binary phase diagram. Since ZnTe and In2Te3 are both semiconductors, any intermediate compounds formed in this system should also be semiconductors according to the rules delineated by Mooser and pearson.1 The compound ZnIn2Te4 was first reported by Hahn et a1.2 and it has subsequently been prepared and characterized electrically by several workers. A brief summary of this work has been presented by Mason and O'Kane3 who also report that the compound appeared to melt peritec-tically. The Zn-Te phase diagram has been investigated by Kulwicki4 who found that ZnTe has a melting point of 1290° + 2°C. The In-Te diagram published in Hansen' contains significant errors, and has been redetermined by Grochowski et al.6 However, both sources agree that the melting point of In2Te3 is 667°C, with the latter authors reporting the previously observed solid-solid transformation occurring at about 550°C. (written discussion*).-When we undertook the development of the Kathleen mine, near DuQuoin, certain features greatly influenced the construction and underground development. The country is very flat, so that the usual gravity yard movement of empty and loaded coal cars would entail a very heavy fill at the empty-car end of the tracks, with some form of car-pulling arrange-ment to move the loads where it was practically impossible to provide. a gravity movement. So the yard was made level, except for 1000 ft. (304 m.) under the two tipples, where the cars are moved by gravity and controlled under the main-shaft tipple by four Fairmont car retarders. Both tipples are spread sufficiently to admit of introducing a narrow-gage track and locomotive. One 18-ton locomotive is at present employed in moving empties clown to a point above the main-shaft tipple and the loads off the track scales clown into the storage yard; ultimately a 25-ton loco-motive will be employed on the loaded side of the tipple. SILICON-IRON strip with a cube-on-edge secondary recrystallization texture is made commercially as thin as 10 mils. With inclusions present to inhibit normal grain growth, a few grains, and these have the (110)[001] orientation, grow very large at the expense of the matrix grains. In the absence of inclusions, only normal grain growth occurs and the texture is not as strong as when it is developed by secondary recrystallization.1 Strip for use at frequencies of 400 cps and higher is made in thicknesses of 1, 2, and 4 mils by a process developed by Littmann.2 Attempts to develop a strong texture in these thin gages by the same methods as were used for the 10 mil and thicker strip were unsuccessful,2 and Littmann's solution to this problem was to cold roll the grain

A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.

Since D. C. Jackling was famous for his adeptness at organizing and training teams of operating personnel, the subject of mine management is particularly appropriate for a Jackling Lecture. In fact, it is doubly appropriate because in very basic ways Jackling's career changed the nature of the tasks and challenges facing a mine manager. Management of mines, of course, is the art of finding and winning minerals economically from the earth's crust, and it involves the use of all the engineering sciences. But also of prime importance is a skill which is not yet a science-the area of management often referred to as human engineering. Since expenditures on staff and labor may well involve more than 50% of the direct costs of operating a mine, ability at human engineering is just as important as the ability to plan and put into effect the most efficient operating procedures.

This brief paper is designed to place on record some interesting occurrences, recently observed during an examination of the Golden Age Mine, in Boulder county, Colorado. Leaving the little village of Jamestown—or Jimtown, as it is more generally called—located in the canon of James creek, the road winds up a steep mountain composed of the coarse gray granite, with occasional belts of gneiss, common to all the mineral-bearing sections of Boulder county, to the summit of the front range of the Continental Divide. Here are located the mines known as the Golden Age and the Sentinel, the relative locations of which are shown in Fig. 1. The Golden Age location covers the outcrop of a quartz-porphyry dike, which cuts through the granite country-rock with a strike of about N. 70' E. This dike varies in width from a few feet, as at a point between the main shaft and the Hill shaft, to about 50 feet,
