Introduction of continuous mining machines in the late 1940s created a new production bottleneck in room-and-pillar sections-the shuttle car. While continuous miners could cut and load coal at a nearly constant rate, the mining sequence was repeatedly interrupted as fully loaded shuttle cars changed places with empty ones. This wait-for-the-shuttle delay period forced the coal industry to reassess the shuttle's batch-type procedure with an eve toward continuous haulage systems that would allow uninterrupted coal flow from face to portal.

An overland belt conveyor system installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio, is presently carrying coal three miles at an estimated cost of 4.499 per ton-mile. Installed by Link-Belt Co. in late 1961, this system transports coal from open pit and underground mining operations to the Conesville Power Plant. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. In 1960 the power plant completed plans to enlarge by adding a third boiler. As a result, Simco-Peabody was required to provide means to produce and handle more coal. The haulage equipment, which consisted of one 90-ton, five 60-ton and one 50-ton off- highway trucks, was too small to handle the increasing daily coal demands. Annual tonnage was approaching a million tons and in a few years would be well over that figure.

PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.1 From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch- chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. To add to the existing knowledge of the chemistry of the flotation process, it is desirable to ascertain the effects on the corn starch as an iron oxide depressant when some of the hydroxyl radicals are replaced by other active groups that are common to flotation reagents. The ideal way to carry out this investigation would be to test reagents containing different active groups derived from corn starch. The preparation should be such that the reagents possess the same degree and location of substitution and are ac- companied by little or no degradation of the starch molecules. This, of course, is almost impossible to realize, as it is difficult to control the degree and location of substitution as well as to prevent degradation of the starch molecule during preparation.

In 1951 the first ton of iron was shipped from West Africa; ten years later the total export exceeded 4 million tons, and an optimistic forecast for 1970 indicates a production capacity of something around 40 to 50 million tons. The quality of the ore varies from normal hematitic concentrates, through naturally enriched hematitic direct shipping ores with comparatively high content of ore fines, to dense, hard, rich lump ores of magmatic character. West Africa is largely composed of folded Pre-cambrian rocks trending generally northeast to southwest. They are exposed over about one third of West Africa and are part of the vast continental plateau which has an average elevation of about 1300 ft in this area.

THat the problem of utilizing anthracite waste is worthy of the thought bestowed upon it, may be shown in few words. In the year 1889, for instance, 35,408,000 tons of coal were sent to market from the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania. According to the report of the State Geological Survey, the amount of coal thrown on the dumps as waste, varies, with circumstancett, from 44 to 60 per cent. of that shipped to market. The lower of these figures represents 16,579,000 tons of waste for that year, and it is obvious that if this, or any considerable portion of it, could have been saved, it would have constituted an important addition to the fuel-supply of the country. It is not surprising, therefore, that so much attention has been given to the utilization of this waste. Among the many lines of experiment pursued with this object in view, the conversion of the carbon of the culm into producer-gas seemg at first to promise the most satisfactory solution of the problem. INTRODUCTION Manganese nodules were first discovered by the H.M.S. CHALLENGER expedition of 1873-76 and have engaged the interest of oceanographers and natural resources engineers ever since (1-4). Manganese nodules, some of them as large as grapefruit, cover vast stretches of the ocean floor throughout many parts of the world. In some areas the ocean floor is literally paved with nodules. The Pacific Ocean alone is estimated to contain 1.5 trillion tons of nodules which are forming at the rate of about 10 million tons per year (2). An analysis of the principal metal values for Pacific Ocean nodules is shown in Table I (5). [ ] The principal ingredients of the nodules are manganese and iron, but they also contain other important associated metal values such as copper, nickel, cobalt, and molybdenum. The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environmental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of environmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

Until four years ago the market price of oil securities moved directly and immediately with the general list. This point, was first developed by the senior author in 1924 while making a statistical study of the relative movement of oil securities and the general market. Plotting the monthly averages of 17 oils against 233 industrials disclosed the sur- prising relationship shown in Fig. 1. The traditional vagaries of the oil business, the wide fluctuations in current supply and resulting abrupt changes in crude prices nevertheless produced no movements in the market price of oil securities as a group, which departed notably from the movements of the general market. The Iron Mountain, situated three-quarters of a mile NE. of the limits of the City of Durango, rises abruptly from a level plain, and trends N. 83' E. Fig. 1 gives a view of the mountain, with the company's iron-works. There are indications that the vein or deposit of iron-ore extends also about two leagues across the Murca ranch, in the same general direction. The Iron Mountain proper is divided into two great lenses by a horse of cantera or eruptive rock, some hundreds of feet in width.

Whereas single particle flotation is considered to be evoked by physico-chemical bubble adhesion, floc flotation seems to be governed by other mechanisms. This study demonstrates that air bubble size does not affect the flotation efficiency of inorganic particles which have been destabilized by different means: 1. addition of simple salts and 2. polyelectrolyte dosage. The air-to-solids ratio A/S does not influence the solids removal efficiency within a broad range of examination. However, there is a significant difference between A/S-values necessary to obtain optimum flotation comparing both destabilization mechanisms. Polyelectrolyte concentration corresponding to complete particle destabilization at the isoelectric point leads to optimum sedimentation rates but not to optimum flotation efficiency. To obtain optimum solids removal by flotation higher polyelectrolyte concentrations are necessary resulting in a positive solids surface charge. These effects are explained on the basis of different floc structures.

It is difficult to understand why they did it. It was a demonstration of total commitment which sent chills of mixed admiration and fear up and down your spine. The scene was the bodega in Section A, 2660 Level on the 12 to 8 shift. The jefe was patiently waiting for the tea leaves to settle in a large metal cup. His attention was distracted by the appearance of a miner who had a problem. The long and short of it was that the miner believed the branch raise he was driving was unsafe and he wanted the jefe to come and see it. After lunch the jefe went around. First cautiously shining his light to peer up the raise from outside the chute, he then scrambled inside and swiftly climbed the cribs to the face. No question, it was hairy; about 4 crib sets were needed to catch up to the face. The unsupported raise was slabbing. It didn't take the jefe more than a few seconds to ascertain this situation and to slide back down. As he came out of the chute, a small avalanche arrived on his heels and provided a sort of exclamation point to his order; "cerrado!" In other words, shut 'er down.

INTRODUCTION There is a lot of discussion about the relative merits of sinter and pellets as components of a BF-burden. Many people claim that sinter is to be preferred and that the percentage of pellets in the burden must be restricted to 20%. During BF-trials in IJmuiden various amounts of pellets having various basicities were tried. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in furnace performance. Consequently the choice between sinter and pellets must be based on the local manufacturing costs (1). Table 1 gives a summary of the pellet experience in IJmuiden. [ ] Because the BF-trials were relatively short, a survey of published BF-operating data has been undertaken to investigate if differences between a sinter and pellet based BF- practice could be found. The comparison of BF-operating results has been restricted to coke rate and productivity.

THE phase behavior of a number of binary systems consisting of paraffin hydro-carbons has been determined in recent years. In addition, the composition of the coexisting phases of mixtures of crude oil and natural gas has been investigated.1 However, the latter study did not include information concerning the influence of the concentration of a component upon its distribution between two coexisting phases. Owing to the paucity of such information it was considered desirable to investigate in some detail the composition of the co-existing phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system throughout the greater part of the two-phase region at a tempera-ture of 100°F. Information of this nature also permits the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system.

The pebble-phosphates of Florida occur in a district roughly bounded on the north by the 28th parallel, on the east by an irregular line running a few miles east of Peace river and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, and covering an area of about 4000 square miles. There seems to be no reason why the deposits should not extend farther south along the gulf coast. That section remains unprospected, transportation-facilities being non-existent. Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31, 1970, a notice of proposed rulemaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working places of underground coal mines. In light of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed rulemaking, the proposed standards were withdrawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974, and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting-standards &k place on October 1, 1976, which means that the underground coal mining, industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978.

In a cooperative research effort, the US Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Co. investigated floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground coal mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with underground openings, causing roof and pillar problems. The floor and roof analysis techniques that were used in the USBM/Pittston investigation may have a wide range of applicability in the mining industry. Recommended orientations and geometries for mining operations are directed at floor problems, but may also enhance roof stability.
