In a paper, " A Study of the Elimination of Impurities from Copper-Mattes, etc.," presented to the Institute at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1898, I gave certain figures which I called the relative slaggability in refining copper. In that paper* will be found the following pertaining to this subject: Relative Slaggability in Refining Converter-Copper. Cu. Pb. Bi. Sb. As. Se, Te. 1 129.5 1.13 7.30 5.22 0.81 and Relative Slaggability in Refining Electrolytic Copper. Cu. Pb. Sb. As. 1 41 9.97 7.13 Since there is a, possibility of misinterpretation of the above values, the following supplementary information may seem justified in explanation. As the contents of impurities in the unrefined or crude copper were unknown, the contents of the refined copper were substituted therefor, merely in order to obtain the two series of figures for comparison. These figures are higher than they would be had I been able to take the correct ones for the unrefined copper. The high figure, 129.5, for lead, in the case of converter-copper, means simply that more lead was slagged from the crude copper than remained in the refined copper; or, in definite values, that to 1 per cent. of copper slagged, the ratio of the lead gone into the slag and the lead remaining in the refined copper is 129.5 : 100. It is possible to approximate the true slaggability much more closely by adding the quantities of impurities in the refined copper to those in the slag, thus obtaining values for the crude copper in which the amounts volatilized are ignored (the latter

EARLY workers attempted to study the structure of alloys by measurement of equilibrium electrode potentials in aqueous solutions containing ions of the metals from which the alloy was made.1 The method was subject to such limitations (e.g., the difficulty in attaining electro-chemical equilibrium at low temperatures) that it has not been widely used by metallurgists. Recently, Seltz and co-workers have introduced a greatly improved method for studying alloys by measurement of equilib-rium electrode potentials in molten salts.2-4 The mathematical treatment is the same, of course, as for equilibrium potentials of amalgams in aqueous solutions.5 This method will probably find extensive use, since it makes possible not only the deter-mination of phase fields of equilibrium diagrams but also the determination of certain thermodynamic quantities which can be used advantageously in metal-lurgical calculations. However, the method presents difficulties. With many metallic and alloy electrodes, reversibility is not readily obtainable. Also, the difficulty of obtaining suitable material from which to make the cells is increased as the temper-ature is increased. Moreover, the necessity of carrying out measurements in a vacuum requires additional apparatus and intro-duces considerable difficulty, especially at the higher temperatures.

INVESTIGATORS in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial tempera-tures; i. e., 1000° to 1800° C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree.

After eight years of testing and development, the E. J. Longyear Co. has adapted the wire- line core barrel to small diameter drillholes. Field performance indicates that the apparatus for the BX hole will be an important supplement to the conventional techniques used in the diamond core drilling industry. Higher core recovery, faster drilling progress, and reduced diamond costs will provide substantial savings to the user of coring equipment. The wire-line principle is not new, having been successfully applied to the large-diameter holes of the petroleum industry. But scaling the practices of core recovery in oil well drilling down to the small BX hole presented a number of problems. The technique, difficult even for large holes, was complicated by the exacting limitations of the small diameter in which durable and foolproof mechanisms would be required to operate. Since the maximum benefits could be realized from this sys- tem in holes 1000 ft and deeper or in holes in badly fractured ground, the drill string would have to be able to withstand heavy stresses. Most vital to the success of the idea was the development of a positive latching mechanism to assure proper positioning of the inner tube of the core barrel when the tube is dropped into place. Lastly, little was to be gained from the wire-line method without diamond bits that would give optimum penetration rates and a long service life in the drillhole.

Mining camps from Mexico to Alaska and from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic were represented by delegates at the 5th Annual Northwest Mining Convention which was held in Spokane, Wash., Feb. 19-24, 1917. About 300 delegates from outlying regions were present, this being fully 100 more than have been counted at any previous mining convention in Spokane. Graham B. Dennis, president of the Northwest Mining Association, made the address of welcome. In part, he said: "Heaven has made us the possessors of an area great enough for an empire, varied enough in climate and possibilities to compass the whole complex field of modern industry. In the development of this broad heritage, we are not only actors for today, but trustees for future ages. "It is to foster this spirit of unity; to create and maintain strong bonds of mutual good will and confidence, that we founded the Northwest Mining Association. Wee support it because we believe it will give us strength; because we believe we shall learn from each other; because, in industry as in every other walk of life, personal contact and establishment of ties of friendship enrich and round out the characters of men." One of the interesting lectures of the week was that on "Alaskan and Russian Gravel Mining," by Dr.' Henry Mace Payne, consulting engineer for the Russian government and Consolidated Goldfields of South Africa. Dr. Payne's illustrations showed the different appliances in use in the countries mentioned. The Resolutions Committee reported back to the Convention six of the seven resolutions that had been presented to it. These were adopted as submitted, with some minor changes.

A geochemical survey was conducted in the gold district in Alabama. Eight old mines were found to be sufficiently large in tenor and tonnage to be economical today. Four of these appeared to be amenable to exploration for new blind deposits. A gaseous aspiration AA method was used on soil samples. The results indicate that arsenic, antimony, and zinc may be good pathfinders for lode gold and residual placers in the saprolite. Antimony and zinc display a high correlation coefficient at gold-bearing locations in contrast to non-mineralized areas. The low cost of this method could make it a tool for selecting detailed targets to be drilled and trenched in the saprolite. Outcrop sampling was found to be inefficient due to paucity of outcrops and lack of correlation between the trace elements and gold in the rock samples, due to extensive weathering. Schistosity changes and silicification, on the other hand, have been found to be helpful in exploration around granite plutons.

This paper presents the results of experiments in the treatnient of the gold-bearing ores of the Pis Pis district, near the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua, C. A. Up to the present time, the methods in use in this section of the country for the extraction of the values from the ores have been of the crudest, and the waste has been criminal in its enormity. The transportation of heavy machinery being difficult and costly, recourse has been had to flimsy and inadequate installations, involving great wastes in operation. In some places $15 ore is considered the lowest workable grade. One mine that came under my observation had a 7-ft. vein of $23 ore when examined for purchase; it has been running for years and is now deeply in debt. The future metallurgy of these ores must depend upon chemical, mechanical, and economical considerations—the last being, of course, a resultant of the two former, discussed in the light of prevailing or realizable commercial and industrial conditions. I. Chemical. The ores consist principally of quartz, carrying galena, pyrite, marcasite, and chalcopyrite, and occasionally magnetite, hematite, pyromorphite, and sphalerite, in which minerals the gold lies. The quartz veins occur between malls of andesite, " porphyry," or dioritic rocks, occasionally limestone and dacite. Often the dacite itself is heavily ribbed and filled with auriferous quartz, and is mined as ore. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies, of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. ThE equilibrium phase diagram of the Mo-Cr system, described by anssen,' indicates that chromium and molybdenum form a continuous series of solid solutions above 1673K. The liquidus and solidus have been reported to have a minimum at about 12 at. pct Mo and 2133°K by Bloom and Grant2 and by Putnam, Potter, and Grant.3 X-ray studies by Trzebiatowski and ploszek4 and Baen and Duwez' revealed no indication of solid solution decomposition after long anneals at 1473", 1273", 923", and 873°K. However, Bloom and rant' by means of cooling and heating curve analysis of alloys containing up to 45 at. pct Mo found thermal effects at temperatures approximately 100" * 30°K below the liquidus. The only previous thermodynamic study of the Cr-Mo alloy system was made by Laffitte and Kuba-schewski6 who used the Knudsen effusion method at 1471°K. These investigators reported the possibility of a miscibility gap because they observed positive deviations from ideality in their chemical activity

The removal of heavy metal compounds from a synthesized waste cyanide solution is achievable by a precipitation-flotation method. However, the differential separation of constituting metals by this method was thought to be very difficult. The present author found that addition of ferrous salt to the synthesized waste cyanide solution of cadmium and copper can modify the separation characteristics of these metals. In this paper, the separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water by the precipitation-flotation method is discussed. This differential flotation uses ferrous salt as a precipitant and sodium oleate as a collector. Based on a series of fundamental flotation tests, actual differential flotation tests were made. The separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water was found to be satisfactory. This method can be effective for the removal of difficult-to- separate colloidal precipitates from liquids by the sedimentation method, provided the applicability of this method to the separation of the other metals is promising. This consists of the intensive studies which have been conducted at author's laboratory.

This study initiated to explore the potential of commercial chelating extractant for beneficiation of minerals revealed "LIX "65N to be an excellent collector for cuprite and chrysocolla. The collector action of the LIX is proposed to result from its chelation with copper species on the surface of the minerals. Thus, the syn-isomer of LIX65N, which is unable to form a chelate with copper ions, failed also to act as a collector. The proposed mechanism takes into account partitioning of LIX between the mineral surface (to form a surface chelate) and the copper chelate dispersed in the bulk aqueous phase (either due to formation of the chelate with dissolved copper, or due to detachment of chelate formed at surface). The efficiency of the collection is dependent upon this partitioning since the bulk chelate is found unable to collect. The marked decrease in flotation obtained when copper was added to the system supports this mechanism. The dependence of flotation of chrysocolla and cuprite on pH and reagentizing time is discussed on the basis of the proposed mechanism. Batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of oxide, sulfide and mixed oxide-sulfide copper minerals with quartz demonstrated the ability of LIX to separate the copper minerals from quartz.

HENRY A. VEZIN, Denver, Colo. (communication to the Secretary, February, 1897): I have read Mr. Austin's paper with considerable interest, more especially as the designing and study of such works have been an attractive occupation for me during the last twenty-five years. Mr. Austin says that a " plant on a terraced site has generally been considered the most advantageous," and also that " many advocate a level site," while he himself " is disposed to advocate a modification of the latter plan, utilizing an extended surface with a moderate slope."* Among the advocates of the terraced sites as against level ones, I do not recollect ever meeting a metallurgist who had even made an attempt to plan his works for level ground, or who had, in a lucid interval, figured how much he gained or lost by one or the other method. The average metallurgist starts with the assumption that it is rational to conduct his material down hill because its movement is aided by gravity, while to elevate ore or furnace-material by machinery he vaguely believes to be not alone wrong in principle, but also unnecessarily expensive. X HE development of the cube-on edge secondary re-crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip requires that normal grain growth be restrained. It has been shown that the degree of restraint and hence the completeness of secondary recrystallization depends upon the size and number of second-phase particles, which in turn is dependent upon the prior processing history.1y2 The purpose of this note is to show that, for heats in which manganese sulfide particles are providing the restraint to grain growth, the choice of hot rolling temperature depends upon the manganese content. The making and processing of the heats to the final gage of 0.012 in. has been described.3 The compositions are given in Table I. Apparent in Fig. 1 is the decrease in the ability of strips hot-rolled from 1175°C to undergo secondary recrystallization as the manganese content increases. It has been shown that 1175°C is below the solubility temperature of 0.014 pet S in even the 0.038 pct Mn alloy: and the observed behavior is attributed to an increasing fraction of the sulfur forming large manganese sulfide particles at the heating temperature for hot rolling. This fraction of the sulfur is thus unavailable to subsequently form the small, uniformly dispersed particles which are needed to restrain normal grain growth. Since the sulfur is completely in solution at 1325°C,3 strips from all three alloys show strong secondary recrystallization behavior when hot-rolled from that temperature.

THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is con-fined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjust-ment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less. power, steel and main-tenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representa-tive concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa. In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion.

THE possible oil territory of Alabama can be readily divided into two regions, the Paleozoic area of the north, and the Coastal Plain province of Cretaceous and younger formations lying to the south. This latter area has received much attention in the last few years and has been described by a number of writers.1 Although the possibilities of the Cretaceous series have been much emphasized by recent writers, the fact remains that the two or, possibly, three localities where oil or as have been found in, anything like paying quantities are confined o the area of Carboniferous rocks. Moreover, almost all of the oil seeps and a good percentage of the gas seeps are confined to this area .2 Topographically, as well as structurally, the Paleozoic area can be divided into three rather well defined provinces: (1) The broad, open Coosa Valley lying adjacent to the crystalline oldland, with comparatively little relief, except for occasional longitudinal ridges and rather intense folding; (2) the plateau region of horizontal or gently warped Pennsylvanian strata broken by occasional anticlinal valleys aligned northeast and southwest, outliers of the Coosa Valley proper, in which

In 1972 Kennecott Explorations, Inc. conducted a three month cruise to the central Pacific as part of a study of deep-ocean manganese nodules. One of the objectives of the voyage was to collect at least 200 tons of nodules for use in extractive metallurgy research and various engineering tests. It was determined to cut off production at a maximum of 200 tons, should we reach that amount before the end of the 38 on-station days. We were able to reach that goal; 200 tons of nodules were collected, representing an average return of 2340 lb from 171 dredge runs. Once equipment and techniques were refined, normal returns consistently exceeded 2 tons per haul. Up to this time, Kennecott had sampled extensively with the use of small free-fall devices using wire rope and winch equipment. These devices have never offered a viable method for collecting nodules in bulk, and we sought to develop a dredging capability which would give some assurance of meeting future requirements with efficiency and economy. After testing a series of increasingly complex dredge designs at sea, it was decided to utilize two of the simpler configurations, which after modification provided the basic design for the dredge used.

Swelling ground is one of the most feared problems in tunneling. Although usually not causing sudden failures during construction, the very large and longlasting deformations give contractors and designers the impression of facing an inevitable phenomenon against which there is no technical defense. Examples are concrete liners up to 1 m (3 ft) thickness that have been cracked or crushed, tunnel inverts that are heaving at 0.1 m (0.3 ft) per week during construction and continue to heave during decades. This paper summarizes essential components of design construction procedures where tunnels in swelling rock can be built to perform satisfactorily. It is important to point out that design and construction cannot and should not be separated. The way the tunnel will be built has to be an integral part of the design. Swelling can be defined as time dependent volume increase and is distinguished from squeezing, another time dependent phenomenon occurring in tunneling. Squeezing involves exceeding the shearing resistance while swelling usually does not. Swelling of rock masses can occur as swelling of the intact rock, swelling of wall rock, of gouge and of filler in the discontinuities of a rock mass, and as a combination of the above. Swelling mechanisms have been discussed elsewhere (ISRM 1983).

Longwall mining which has a long history abroad, was used only on a limited scale in the United States until less than 20 years ago. Modern longwall mining in this country can be said to have begun in 1960 with the first installation of self-advancing props in a coal mine in southern West Virginia. In Europe, because of adverse natural conditions, longwall mining is frequently the only practical method, but, in the United States, the system has had to compete economically with highly productive room-and-pillar systems. However, because it is inherently continuous, it has greater productive potential than room-and-pillar systems, and, therefore, although only about 5% of the total U.S. underground production today is the result of the longwall system, its growth potential is great. As mining, by necessity, progresses deeper and must be done under poorer natural conditions, less opportunity will exist for the room- and-pillar system, and the longwall system will have to be used.
