A FORMER paper1 described in detail various methods of calculating coal analyses to obtain the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance-that is, of the coal free from its mineral matter. The paper included a table showing calorific values of pure coal, as calculated from float-and-sink portions, by means of the Parr formula for "unit coal" and by the customary moisture-free and ash-free formula. A modification of the Parr formula was proposed, based on the assumption that one-half the sulfur present in coal occurs as pyritic sulfur and one-half as organic sulfur. In the published discussion of the paper Cady gave a table of results on a large number of Illinois coals as obtained by the Parr formula and the proposed modification thereof. The results obtained by Cady indicate that the Parr formula applies better to Illinois coals than does the modified formula proposed by Fieldner and Selvig. The present paper gives results obtained by applying the modified Parr formula to the analyses of the float-and-sink portions of the coals shown in the former paper, and results obtained by applying the Parr formula, the modified Parr formula, and the simple moisture-free and ash-free formula to various coals of the United States ranging in sulfur content from less than 1 per cent to more than 4 per cent sulfur. A graphic method of estimating the calorific value of pure coal and determin-ing the relation of the coal ash to the mineral matter of coal, as proposed by Stansfield and Sutherland,2 was applied to a number of coals, and the results are given herein.

JOHN ALEXANDER MATHEWS, who has been awarded the Hunt Gold Medal for his paper "Austenite and Austenitic Steels," which was pre-sented before the Institute as the Howe Memorial Lec-ture for 1925, was born at Washington, Pa., on May 20, 1872. His interest in metallurgy may be said to be hereditary, as three generations of his Colonial forbears were gold and silversmiths. After graduating from Washington and Jefferson College in 1893, he entered Columbia University where he was successively assistant in assaying and tutor in chemistry and at the same time continued his work for the Ph. D. degree, which he received in 1898. He was at one time awarded a fellowship in chemistry, and for 1900, 1901 and 1902 re- ceived the award of the Ear- nard Fellowship for the En- couragement of Scientific Re- search, spending one year at the Royal School of Mines, in London, studying alloys un- der Sir William Roberts- Austen, another at Columbia under Henry M. Howe, and the third at Sanderson Bros. works, Syracuse. While in England, he was one of the first three, recipients of an Andrew Carnegie Scholarship of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, which later awarded him the first Car- negie Gold Medal for Re-search. He entered the employ of the Crucible Steel Company of America, at its Sanderson works, in 1902, as metal- lurgist and soon became as- sistant manager. In 1908 he ent to the Halcomb Steel JOHN A. Co., Syracuse, N. Y., as superintendent, later becoming general manager and president in 1915. In 1920 he returned to Crucible Steel Co. of America, first as vice-president and later became president from 1921 to 1924. He retired from the presidency in 1924, made a metal-lurgical trip to Europe, and returned as vice-president to resume his "favorite pastime" of directing research and development work in the production of special tool and alloy steels. He has taken a particular interest in the development of austenitic steels which, in addition to an extraordinary resistance to corrosive attack, show under fatigue, torsion, and tension tests superior qualities as compared with the ordinary engineering steels, and at elevated temperatures show remarkable resistance to oxidation and scaling and several times the strength of many of the complex alloys that are not of the natural austenitic variety.

BY far the most conspicuous of the Pennsylvania slate districts is that extending from the New Jersey line at the Delaware Water Gap westward almost to the Schuylkill River. This covers parts of three counties in east-central Pennsylvania: Northampton, Lehigh, and Berks. The most important development, both in geographic size and product importance, is in Lehigh and Northampton counties. The greater part of the region is underlain by only one formation-the Martinsburg, consisting of slates, clay slates, and sandy shales, all of the Ordovician period. The slate-bearing Martinsburg formation is underlain by Cambro-Ordovician limestones. Immediately overlying the Martinsburg formation is the Tuscarora quartzite of the Silurian period. The Martinsburg formation itself is divided into three distinct divisions, termed simply: the upper, the middle, and the lower members. Commercial slate has been extracted from all of these members, but the formation of greatest importance is the upper member, representing 2600 ft of the total formation thickness of nearly 11,000 ft. The upper member is commonly referred to as the "soft slate" and consists of three facies: 1) beds of blue-gray, very sandy, almost quartzitic slate, in many places, approximately a medium-coarse sand- stone with calcareous cement; 2) blue-gray sericitic slat-the dominant rock type of this member-with occasional chloritic beds; and 3) dark gray or virtually black, highly carbonaceous beds, referred to locally as "ribbons."

THIS survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, and forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The survey was made in 1934 by A. H. Miller in collaboration with Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada. Observations began on June 15 and were completed four months later, on Oct. 15. Definite gravitational effects including a lowering of gravity were observed over the deposit. The survey also disclosed one other area of low gravity east of the mine but whether this area is underlain by a large body of salt is not yet established.

The Viburnum ore trend is the largest, single known ore body of lead in the world. Four well-known mining companies operate in the trend, which is approximately 64 km (40 miles) long and up to 610 m (2,000 ft) wide, located some 121 km (75 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO. Total production from the mines for 1979 was 33 kt/d (36,000 tons) of ore or 472 kt/a (520,350 tons) of lead and coproduct metal. The district is the number one producer of lead, providing 90% of the United States' output with its coproducts, zinc ranking second, and copper and silver both ranking sixth in total US output. Mining is done in a stratiform deposit approximately 305 m (1,000 ft) in depth with the host rock principally dolomite. Ore is mined in large open stopes by the method commonly referred to as room-and-pillar mining. Mining methods and equipment are fairly similar, with the mines classified as trackless, all mining equipment operates on rubber tires. This paper will present a description of the different methods and equipment used to move ore from the active heading underground to the ore shaft for hoisting to the surface. Basically, three methods are incorporated: front-end loader and truck haulage combination; front-end loader and truck, with main line track haulage combination; and front-end loader and truck, with conveyor haulage combination. The logistics of each system, such as method of use, equipment specifications, ore handling rate, and those cost figures that could be made public, will be included.

In recent years bismuth telluride has received considerable attention, primarily due to its value as a thermoelectric material. Since there seems to be little dependence of thermoelectric effect upon crystal orientation1 many of those who have previously worked with this material have been unconcerned with knowing its crystallographic angles to any degree of accuracy. However, when one studies deformation modes, lattice stresses, or the aniso-tropy of mechanical properties of a material, knowledge of the interplanar angles and their relationships as depicted in a stereographic projection becomes essential. Lange2 originally published crystallographic data which described the structure of bismuth telluride as rhombohedral with the space group A more recent work by Francombe3 presented data which corroborated and refined the original findings of Lange. In addition, Francombe established that there is no coexistence of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattices in bismuth telluride as was suggested by Vasenin and Konovalov,4 and that the structure can be treated as a pseu do hexagonal structure with an axial ratio, c/a, of 6.95 for convenience of presentation and study. The interplanar angles and standard projections for several unalloyed hexagonal metals have been previously published,5-9 but the present work appears to be unique in that it presents data for a rhombohedral compound in pseudohexagonal form. As a pseudohexagonal structure, this material has an extremely large axial ratio as compared to the usual range of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 for the hexagonal metals. THE preper classification of mining methods has received the earnest study of many mining engineers and has resulted in much technical controversy, depending no doubt upon the point from which classification is viewed or the use to which it is put. So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of underground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute Transactions, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in Mining and Metallurgy in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. CERTAIN influences of oxygen on iron have been known for many years and it has always been considered one of the worst enemies of the iron and steel founders. Nobody had a good word for it, hence little was done to make use of this oxygen. In all the fields of foundry practice, the desideratum was "melt without oxidation of the metal." In the consideration of the influence of oxygen on cast iron, we must not confuse this condition with oxidized iron caused by poor melting conditions, due to a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, excessive melting rate, high blast, or poor charging. It is admitted that oxygen absorbed by iron melted under these conditions has a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron. The writer has had experience both in the melting under such poor conditions and in remedying these bad conditions and considers the product far inferior to iron melted under normal conditions. As stated by Dr. Richard Moldenke,1 such iron has a higher melting point and high combined carbon, is sluggish, and contains slags and oxides in solution in the liquid, causing slag inclusions and gas occlusions, thus producing defective castings. This oxidized condition cannot be counteracted or removed by any of the known deoxidizers; it can be remedied only by proper melting conditions. Such iron is really burned, whereas the iron considered in this paper was melted under normal conditions with moderate blast, correct bed height, light charges of iron, and low coke consumption and is not in this category at all. In 1914, the late J. E. Johnson, Jr., startled the metallurgists of the world when he published his results on the advantages of oxygen on cast iron.2 His work is so convincing and so logical, in spite of the common and well-established notions on the subject, that nobody has been able to refute a single argument. WHEN examining a coal property it is customary for the engineer to take channel samples at several coal faces. In doing so the extraneous matter, or partings, which can be removed by hand, or mechanically, with the facilities at hand, or proposed, is rejected. Where there is doubt concerning a stratum it is usually rejected from the main sample but part is taken for separate analysis. The samples are forwarded to a chemist for proximate analyses and determination of British thermal units, and, sometimes, ash fusion. Consideration is given all available commercial analyses but frequently the owner presents only the favorable ones. From the results thus obtained a general evaluation is made, monies are loaned or expended, markets are determined, and realization is estimated. In many instances, such grades are not substantiated and it is time we looked deeper for a basis which will prove more practical. Institute committees are working hard on analytic and use classifications and much valuable information has already been assembled and distributed. However, no single grade can be applied to any particular bed or region. Much study has been given the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, yet that bed is subject to material differences in a single section; i. e., some strata of a face may differ from others in structure and analysis, particularly in sulfur content. From some localities it yields a good carbonization fuel, while in others it is chemically unfit for such use. Traveling south to the Logan, W. Va., field we find the Cedar Grove (Island Creek) seam a hard, gray splint coal. In the same field, and not far distant, the same bed changes, both structurally and chemically, and consists of excellent gas coal. In Illinois the moisture content of a bed may vary greatly in different localities. We have seen mines in which part of the coal is excellent for special purpose use but is spoiled by the product from another part of the same mine.

Although the situation in the oil industry during the past year has not been conducive to large expenditures for development and research, there is little indication that such expenditures have been curtailed. While few outstanding achievements have been reported, considerable progress has been made in the development of new product,s and the adaptation of petroleum derivatives to new uses. The most important question facing the refiner today is the antiknock quality of his gasoline. This year has seen the widespread adoption of the term "octane number" as a measure for anti-knock values, and in the latter months of the year the public has been made acutely aware of this condition through competitive advertising. Gasoline is no longer priced on volatility and gravity alone, but on octane number as well; and premiums are being paid for material of relatively high octane rating. The situation has grown more and more competitive and has forced refiners continually to raise the octane rating of their regular and competitive grades, and at this writing the same situation exists for premium grades which have possessed relatively high anti-knock properties for some time. Straight-run gasoline produced from paraffin-base or semiparaffin-base crudes has an inherently low anti-knock value, and in order to convert this material to a higher quality it has been found necessary to crack an increasing percentage of the crude oil charge. By completely cracking the heavier portions of the crude and blending back with the straight-run gasoline, it has been possible to produce an average of 63 to 65 octane number gasoline on average Mid-Continent crude. This operation carried to the fullest extent does not suffice, however, and the recent and rapid development of the so-called '(reforming unit," has resulted. The straight-run gasoline fraction is cut into two parts: a light, low boiling point gasoline; and a heavy gasoline or naphtha. The latter containing the low anti-knock portions of the gasoline, is sent through a re-forming unit and subjected either to high temperature or pressure, or both, which materially increases its octane number. Although the subject matter contained in this paper is presented under a new title, its writing was induced by the work of S. Skowronski and K. W. McComas.' A discussion of the latter is here combined with the presentation of new and independent data. The' physical constants quoted by the authors of that paper, such as melting and boiling points, as also the chemical reactions of the substances involved, are so well established that the numerous confirmatory experiments and their application to metallurgical conditions leave little or no room for criticisms. On the contrary, they will greatly aid to dispel any lingering skepticism as to possible considerable losses of copper accruing when the metal is melted in the presence of its own and, probably, other chlorides and when no provision is made for the recovery of volatile products. Exception may be taken, to some degree, to that part of the work under the caption Melting Drillings of Copper Mixed with Sodium Chloride. These experiments should have been extended in order to make the implied reactions clear and the results convincing. The latter are stated to be, "that when sodium chloride is present above certain minimum quantity relative to copper some of it is found to volatilize in the melt while another part reacts with the metallic copper to produce the volatile cuprous chloride, and that when smaller quantities of sodium chloride are present the reaction is complete and all chlorine is found to have volatilized as cuprous chloride." Metallic copper and sodium chloride are mentioned as the sole reagents in this chemical process, acting, according to the authors, in a neutral atmosphere of carbon dioxide. The chemist, quite naturally, wi11 inquire into the formula according to which that reaction takes place and will find that it presents itself as follows: 2Cu + 2NaCl = 2Na + Cu2Cl2 It would appear that the truth of this formula will be challenged and a more rational explanation of the reaction sought. Apparently, carbon dioxide is neutral relative to metallic copper in its molten state; whether it remains neutral in the presence of sodium chloride is quite another

INTRODUCTION The surface processes involved in preparing ores for flotation and for operations depending on their flocculation/dispersion characteristics * vary widely in agitation dependence. Most of the reagents used for these purposes are added to grinding circuits, pump sumps, launders, or directly to flotation cells with the turbulent flow conditions usually adequate both for mixing reagents and for surface reactions without special conditioners. However, some reagent systems do require specific control of agitation intensities and reaction times, the more important of these being the following: 1. Activation of ZnS with CuSO4. With the usual conditions pH about 10, with collector added with the CuSO4, Cu 2+ is almost completely precipitated as basic compounds and as collector salt. As a result the levels of reagent in solution are extremely low which probably accounts for the need for separate conditioning. The agitation intensities are at about the 0.01 HP/ton level.** 2. ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi¬menting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electrodeposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electrodeposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

It is the purpose of this paper to summarize data on unitization projects in Oklahoma and Kansas as obtained from replies to questionnaires sent out by the A. I. M. E. committee for these states. The information received indicates that unitization is growing rapidly in this area, but has not been in operation for a sufficient length of time to develop production history. It was impossible to obtain a record of all unitization projects in the time available. The magnitude of such projects is indicated by the fact that reports were received covering a total of 171,420 acres in Kansas and 49,350 acres in Oklahoma. Most of these units have been formed during the past 2 years, the greater number having been completed in 1929. It is anticipated that even more will be formed during the present year. The following important facts have been emphasized by answers to the questionnaire and discussion with various operators: 1. Unitization is growing rapidly, as evidenced by the number of units and the large total acreage now included in units as compared with practically no acreage 2 years ago. 2. Operators are convinced that unitization is reducing development and operating cost and they anticipate greater reductions as experience is gained in unit operation. 3. Producing units have not been in operation for a sufficient length of time to give significant production history from which to estimate the ultimate recovery of oil, but the general opinion seems to be that more oil will be recovered. 4. In view of the benefits to be derived from unitization, many operators are refusing to carry on wildcat operations unless a unit has been formed. If this attitude continues to grow there will be no large pools developed in Oklahoma and Kansas in the future except under unit control. Summary The following tabulation gives a condensed summary of the information received on unit operations in Oklahoma and Kansas, but does not include all units, because many were not reported.

The Robinson mining district in east-central Nevada is itself a century of study in the changing economics of the mining business. It began as a boom and bust area. In the district today, just west of Ely, Nev., the hills are pockmarked with the tunnels and shafts sunk in a frantic scramble for gold and silver before the turn of the century. But as the economics of dwindling reserves, rising costs, and changing markets were stamping out the efforts of the gold and silver seekers, copper took over as the king of the Robinson district. Today, Kennecott Copper Corp. has four open pit mines in the district and is planning a fifth. From these mines, Kennecott produces nearly 40,000 tpy (tons per year) of copper. In its hundred years of history, the district has produced more than $1 billion in mineral values, a richer treasure than that from the more famed Comstock Lode of Virginia City, Nev. Prospectors had reported copper outcroppings in the Robinson district as early as 1872. But the first significant copper orebody was not discovered until 1901. In that year, Dave Bartley and Edwin Gray exposed the top of the porphyry orebody that would become the Ruth mine in a shaft at a depth of 120 ft. Subsequently, other larger orebodies were discovered nearby which have resulted in this area being one of the leading copper producers in the country for some 60 years. Following a period of development and exploration, the Ruth mine started production in 1915 and continued as a prosperous underground mining operation until 1948. The mining industry in Nevada experienced the same increasing cost of labor and supplies that all other mining areas had to contend with, and by 1948 the Ruth mine was no longer profitable. Discussion of the paper of A. PERRY THOMPSON, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed 'in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 645 to 677. ARTHUR S. EAKLE, Berkeley, Cal.-At the old Morning Star mine in Alpine County, where large masses of enargite were found some years ago, I looked particularly for evidences of replacement of pyrite by the enargite. While I have not made a particular study of any of the specimens, I judge that the pyrite and enargite were precipitated together. They were both primarily in those rocks. Of course, by using Mr. Graton's method of determination we might possibly find a situation somewhat different, but I should say that the enargite is not replacing the pyrite, but was simply precipitated at the same time. The bodies occurred there within 50 ft. of the surface, so it is probably not a case of secondary enrichment. H. W. TOLMAN, Stanford University, Cal.-You can find practically all the evidences we have discovered in the microscopic study of ores. You can find all stages in the process of replacement of earlier minerals, especially bornite, by chalcocite, from a stage, in which the process has but just started with only occasional fragments of chalcocite set in bornite, to a stage where remnants of bornite are set in chalcocite. The replacement may take place along the cleavage lines or along the crystallographic directions of the earlier mineral, or it may take place irregularly. In one type of replacement you may find in one spot a few cross-cutting veins, and in another spot the latter may be so enlarged that there remain only a few individual specks of the replaced mineral.

THE Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining Co. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Doré bullion. All persons, actively engaged in your profession, must have a natural interest in the subject of weights and measures. All members of the engineering profession have to do with operations of weighing and measuring—some with measuring more than weighing, and some with weighing more than measuring—but all with both of these processes to a greater or less degree. Methods of weighing and measuring have improved constantly from the earliest times and have kept pace with the advance of other technical processes. It is, therefore, believed that you will be interested in a few remarks concerning some of the more recent advances in relation to the establishment of decimal standards of length and mass in this country. Before speaking of this, I will refer very briefly to some facts which may not be very generally known regarding our customary system of weights and measures. Although the yard is universally accepted as the unit of length, and the pound as the unit of mass, it is not generally understood, I believe, just in what respect the yard is the unit of length, or the pound the unit of mass. That is to say, it is not generally known in what degree these units have been legalized by Acts of congress. Doubtless, many of you are familiar with the facts which I will briefly recapitulate. The Constitution of the United States authorizes Congress to establish a system of weights, measures and coinage. The establishment of a system of coinage, as you know, was one of the first acts of the government, and the system then adopted is certainly one of the most perfect, if not the most perfect, that the world has yet seen.
