THE development by the U. S. Bureau of Mines of a process for purifying manganese by electrolysis has stimulated interest in manganese alloys. While recent publications have shown some alloys of manganese and copper to possess rather unusual properties, none have included information on tensile properties, which have an important bearing on the usefulness of the alloys. Manganese-copper alloys can be heat-treated, since the single phases that exist at high temperatures may be retained by quenching. According to Persson,1 when quenched alloys containing from about 30 to nearly 100 per cent manganese are reheated, alpha manganese is precipitated (Fig. I). Calculations based on Persson's X-ray data indicate that this decomposition is accompanied by a change in volume of as much as 5 per cent. The reason that this large volume change has not been noted probably is the slow rate at which equilibrium is reached by these alloys. In an investigation on hardening by cold-work and heat-treatment, Dean and Anderson' found that quenched alloys increase in hardness with manganese content and that high-manganese alloys harden very slowly with cold-work, while high-copper alloys harden much more rapidly. Heat-treatment has little effect on manganese-copper alloys containing less than 40 per cent Mn, and affects those alloys containing more than 40 per cent in accordance with their manganese content and heat-treating temperature. Dean and Anderson4 also found that cold-work increased electrical resistance of alloys containing from 50 to 80 per cent Mn, and that heat-treatment of alloys containing from 40 to 96 per cent Mn altered the electrical resistance considerably. Dean, Anderson and Potter5 have shown that the high vibration damping capacity that characterizes manganese-copper alloys containing 40 to 90 per cent Mn is affected by cold-work and heat-treatments. Highest vibration damping capacity at low stresses was obtained by heating for 2 hr. at 450°C. (842°F.) after quenching from solution temperatures. Preparation of Alloys.-The alloys for these tests were melted in a 17-lb. basic-lined high-frequency induction furnace using electrolytic manganese, grade A ingot copper and a 70-30 Cu-Mn master alloy (69.80 per cent Cu, 0.12 Fe, 0.04 Si, 0.006 S, 0.07 C, balance Mn). The manganese was heated slowly to expel excess dissolved gases and melted before the addition of copper. No fluxes or covers were used. The melts were cast in tapered iron molds and the ingots were reduced 90 per cent when forged to ½ -in. rounds. These rods were given 2-hr. solution treatments at temperatures that depended upon the composition (Table I). The traces of fossils herein described were discovered in or upon piles or heaps of iron-ores upon the docks at Erie, Pa. The author has worked among these ore-piles since 1890, when his attention was first directed to what looked like organic remains upon certain specimens collected. All the specimens described and figured herein were found by him, and, as no ironore is used at Erie, and no other iron-ores, save those of the Lake Superior region, find their way to the stock-piles at this place, there can be no question but that the specimens in question are genuine ore transported from that region over the great lakes, and cannot have been brought in from other ironore regions. The author has reason to think that no fossil remains have been reported hitherto as occurring in the iron-ores of the Lake Superior region, and he believes that these specimens, however imperfect, rank among the oldest forms of which man has any knowledge. The illustrations are engraved from photographs of drawings. The specimens themselves have not been photographed, because their condition would have prevented bringing out, by that process of reproduction, all the markings as clearly as is necessary, and would have rendered the specimens otherwise less distinct by reason of the blotchy character of their colors, the presence of cracks, or of marks more or less in contact with those of the organisms. In drawing these remains, therefore, I left out everything upon the specimens of ore that did not seem to belong in any way or contribute to their value as illustrations of the fossils. According to information obtained from the dock superintendent at Erie, Pa., the majority of these specimens came from the Chapin mine, Iron Mountain, Menominee range, Mich. In May and June, 1885, I was engaged in examining the goldores of Las Minas, in the State of Vera Cruz, Mexico, with a view of finding a cheap and efficient method for extracting the gold. The following minerals could be plainly seen in the ore : magnetite, pyrites of iron, pyrites of' copper, quartz, and garnet. Neither galena nor zinc-hlende mere visible, but the ore contained a trace of lead, and in some samples of ore from the Muertos mine, 1.19 per cent. of zinc mas found. Antimony and arsenic were not present. Native gold could scarcely be seen in specimens of' the ore, and it only appeared—mainly in extremely fine particles—after pulverizing and washing. Magnetite was in every instance the most prominent mineral, its quantity varying between 43 and 67 per cent. Determinations of copper and sulphur showed that from 3.5 to 7 per cent. pyrites of copper, and from 3 to 22 per cent. pyrites of iron were present. The gold-value of the ore varied between 0.3 oz. and 0.8 oz. per ton. I do not speak of specimens, but of average samples of large quantities of ore put through the battery. In ore that had been crushed through a No. 40 screen, the gold appeared, in part, as free gold, the rest being thoroughly mixed with the magnetite and pyrites, both minerals containing about the same percentage of gold. If this free gold was brought in contact with pure quicksilver it (lid not amalgamate readily, even if the quicksilver was charged with sodium amalgam.

Among the many newer disclosures that have accompanied the petroleum industry's progressively deeper exploratory drilling is the increased frequency with which the operators are encountering reservoirs of which the products at the time of discovery exist wholly or predominantly in the gas phase. The popular term "distillate pool" is most often used within the industry when referring to this type of reservoir, and in this paper the term is used in that sense. These pools have been observed in many different surroundings. In some places the entire reservoir is filled with the wet gas containing its water-white condensible products in the gas phase but apparently with no dark oil or other hydrocarbon liquids in the reservoir. The 8200-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field in West Texas is a good example of this type. At other places the wet, or distillate-bearing, gas may form a large gas cap directly overlying and in contact with an extensive reserve of dark oil. Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills, the 8500-ft. horizon in the Big Lake field, and many others are examples of this type. There are also many places in which the wet distillate-bearing gas fills nearly the entire reservoir space, while the dark oil occupies only a narrow, bandlike zone, which marks the boundary of the reservoir along its lowest productive contour. The heavier components of these deep pool gases are generally water white in color, a large portion of which are condensible in a conventional oil and gas separator, when operated under pressures of the order of 400 to 800 Ib. per sq. in. Although the water-white products recovered in the separator sometimes have end points of 650" F. and higher on standard Engler distillation, they occur only in the gas phase in the reservoir. It is entirely possible that even some small amounts of dark colored reservoir components may occur in the gas phase when the temperature is 300" F. and pressures exceed 6000 Ib. per sq. in. Close approaches to these conditions have been encountered in the deepest producing wells. The condensible content of the deep reservoir gases of the many pools that have been tested or produced to date shows a wide variation in both condensible content, per 1000 cu. ft. of gas, and physical character.

lined-cavity shaped charge is an explosive mass with a cavity at one end and the detonator at the opposite end. The cavity is lined with a dense material, such as metal, glass, or a ceramic. Such an explosive device can be a useful drilling tool. Lined-cavity shaped charges are constructed to do just one thing — create a high-velocity jet of liner particles that can bore a hole in a target. The liner must be smooth and symmetrical, and high-velocity, high-brisance explosive must be used rather than ordinary commercial dynamites. Since the depth of target penetration is related to jet length, a standoff distance should be provided to hold the charge a short distance from the target. This allows the jet to lengthen prior to target impact. The best results are obtained when the jet is perpendicular to the target surface. Charges can be positioned for firing by taping them to a stake or simply laying them on a flat surface at the proper distance and angle with respect to the target. EFFECTS ON THE TARGET When a jet strikes a rock target, the jet and target particles at the jet-target interface move outward radially with respect to the jet axis to create a tremendous compressive load on the target material immediately below the target surface. The result is a shallow crater formed by spalling at the point of target entry. After cratering ceases, the steadily deepening hole continues to form as a result of the jet's imparting radial motion to the target particles at the jet-target interface. These radially moving particles collide with one another and with the hole walls, the net motion of the spent jet particles and target particles being back out of the hole in an axial direction (the backblast). The backblast keeps the penetration free of debris during penetration, al- though loose surface rock often falls into the hole after penetration ceases. The sudden stress relief after penetration ceases sometimes results in minor hole-wall rebound, which can partially fill the hole. The hole bottom will taper as the jet velocity decreases, until the jet velocity is too low to maintain the backblast. At this point the remaining jet and the following slug material are simply packed into the hole bottom. Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their, warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast-moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. ASIDE from being the youngest of the Porphyries-from a producing, not a geologic standpoint-Andes probably presents the most finished piece of engineering, considering the enterprise as a whole: The various units of the mining and reduction works are well designed and efficiently operated, but that is true also at most of the other properties. Some mills or smelters may be superior to those at Andes; but as a complete mechanism for the exploitation of a big copper orebody, the Andes plant stands in a class by itself in many respects. Chuquicamata and Braden, as well as the properties in the United States, grew piecemeal. Capacities were increased and new plants were built as expansion progressed. Andes, on the other hand, existed on paper essentially as it is today before a start was made on actual construction of the reduction plant. More than $35,000,000 had been spent in developing and equipping the mine, and in building the concentrator and smelter, before the first ton of blister copper was produced on January 14, 1927. And another $12,500,000 was spent during the next two years in building the leaching plant and completing other construction. The orebody had been fairly well developed and tentative plans for the erection of reduction works had been made when the post-war depression descended on the copper industry and dictated deferment of the construction of a plant. This delay, however, gave the engineers opportunity to study the problems thoroughly in preparation for the design of the reduction works. The task was performed at Anaconda, Montana, under the direction of Frederick Laist, metallurgical manager, and Wilbur Jurden, chief designing engineer, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's staff. THE steel industry has always been noted for producing men of forceful and versatile personality, many of whom combine the practicality that results from wide experience with an excellent theoretical background that comes from a college training plus years of wide and constant study of metallurgical literature. One of the best known examples of this type is Earle C. Smith, present Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division. After graduating from Ohio State and from Columbia, where he studied under Campbell, Earle started his career at that grand old prewar training school for steel men the Illinois Steel Co., where in the days of the twelve-hour shift he worked on the open-hearth floor. Following World War I, when he was in charge of government inspection at the Central Steel Co., Massillon, Earle held successively jobs of increasing responsibility with Central Alloy Steel, and when this company was taken over by Republic in 1930 he was made assistant district manager and a few years later was appointed chief metallurgist of the whole corporation.

The Copper Canyon and Copper Basin properties of Duval Corp., in Lander Co., have been recently added to the list of porphyry copper mines in Nevada, marking the first new copper open pit operations in this state in 15 years. Ore is processed in the 4000 tpd flotation mill at Copper Canyon, with some copper being recovered by dump leaching. The ore from Copper Basin, 10 miles northeast of the Canyon, is trucked to the mill for concentration. Cost of developing the properties is estimated at $22 million. It was recognized at an early stage of exploration that the two deposits were quite different. Continuity, mineralogy and grade of ore are much more uniform in the Canyon than in the higher grade, pod-like deposits in the Basin. The fundamental difference between the two areas is that the Canyon mineralization is dominantly hypogene, whereas the Basin ores are secondarily enriched.

Blast furnaces are the tools of men, and it is men who have made them great. Here is presented the story of the Ironmakers-the men who first poured hot metal into what would someday be the sinews of a nation. W HEN the Jacobean merchant adventurers bade farewell to the first ship of colonists sailing for the new land, they instructed them to direct all their skill and energy to grow silk worms in Virginia. The adventurers felt sure that they could flood the market with highly priced and much desired goods like silk, sugar, tea, and indigo. They were also convinced that they would fill the needs of the mother country for iron. Early iron production in the colonies The merchants certainly had a wonderful imagination, for silk and indigo were just as exotic in Virginia as they were in England. The settlers found it more profitable to raise tobacco on the vast stretches of the free, fertile land. Thus the plans of settlers clashed with those of The Virginia Co.; and only point of agreement was the desire to produce iron. But, even there the motives of the settlers and those of The Virginia Co. of London were worlds apart. The settlers wanted to produce the tools badly needed in the colony, while the Company desired to cash in on the rising demand for iron which the home industry could not satisfy. Both the settlers and the Company lost no time trying to find iron ore. Locations of the early mines are not known. If, however, the reports of the Irishman, Francis Maguel, can be trusted, as early as 1609 a ship sailed for England with a load of 17 tons of crude iron which the East India Co. purchased at £ 4 per ton. The iron was of excellent quality and considered the best iron made of non-English ore that was ever purchased.

In a recent publication by Flemings and Nereo, equations for the calculation of the solute distribution in castings were developed, and the solute distributions for unidirectionally solidified A1-4.5 pct Cu ingots cast under various thermal conditions were calculated. The equations derived by Flemings and Nereo for the dendrite "expansion" and "steady-state" zones are essentially equivalent to those previously published by Kirkaldy and Youdelis, 16 for, although the flow velocity cooling rate, and temperature gradients appear in the fundamental differential equations, calculation of the solute distribution requires that the above be explicitly related to the assumed or measured solid-liquid mass distributions during solidification. In the treatment of Kirkaldy and Y-oudelis the mass distributions are simply assumed or measured without any prior and explicit association of the mass distributions to a velocity parameter. The treatment of Flemings and Nereo permits solidification conditions more complicated than the simple unidirectional case to be considered (although in principle the treatment of Kirkaldy and Youdelis could also be extended to include the more general solidification case); however, we note some limitations in the treatment of Flemings and Nereo, and the purpose of this discussion is to point these out and also to indicate those points of similarity in the mass distribution models used which make the two treatments equivalent. Both the Kirkaldy-Youdelis and Flemings-Nereo treatments consider a zone of dendrite "expansion" followed by a "steady-state" zone. However, Flemings and Nereo have failed to consider a zone of "collapse" which begins at the base of the first dendrites to reach the top of the ingot. The omission of this zone of "collapse" results in too high a value for the solute concentration in the latter portion of the ingot to solidify and the conservation of total solute is not possible. In the zone of "collapse" the solute concentration rapidly decreases, which may be accounted for as follows: consider a mushy zone of length X,, shown schematically in Fig. 11 (a), which develops at the chill face and then moves as a steady-state configuration along the length of a solidifying ingot. The solute distribution in this zone, when it first attains the steady state, is shown qualitatively in Fig. 11(b). The segregation is positive (above Co) in the region ab because this region contains primary dendritic solid, ranging from kco to kcE in composition (where k is the partition coefficient and CE is the composition of the eutectic liquid), and liquid metal near eutectic composition. The segregation is negative (below Co) in the region bc because it contains primary dendritic solid only slightly above kco in average composition and liquid metal only slightly above Co in composition. The interest shown recently in selenium and tellurium has brought many requests for an assembling of the analytical chemistry of these two elements. The intention of this paper is to discuss all of the chemical principles utilized in the detection and quantitative determination of these elements, as well as to describe the works methods actually followed by producers of tellurium and selenium in the United States. These methods have been furnished by S. Skowronski of the Raritan Copper Works, H. D. Greenwood of the United States Metals Refining Co., F. F. Colcord of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, and E. W. Rouse and A. E. Hall of the American Smelting and Refining Company. Occurrence Selenium is found associated with sulfur, to which in many respects it is quite similar. Occasionally deposits of native sulfur, notably those in the Lipari Islands, Kilauea, and Japan, show a red-brown coloration, I which is readily distinguished from that of other sulfur; this red-brown * sulfur contains a small amount of selenium. Not infrequently, the , sulfides of the heavy metals are accompanied by selenium and tellurium, • presumably as selenides and tellurides. The Scandinavian pyrite, which is one of the large sources of European sulfuric acid, when roasted has fur- - nished a large part of the selenium that has come to the United States; it I was in flue dust from the roasting of Scandinavian pyrites that the element was discovered by Berzelius in 1817. Practical experience has shown that at elevated temperatures solutions containing sodium hydroxide may attack stressed steel in a manner that cannot be explained in terms of ordinary corrosion. Because the ductility of the metal has been greatly reduced during the reaction, the entire phenomenon is usually called "embrittlement." Thus, after several years of operation caustic evaporators have been so badly embrittled that rivets could be cracked off with the blow of a hammer. Since fine intergranular cracks are almost always present in the zone of fracture, it has often been assumed that a process of selective corrosion in grain boundaries was responsible for the failure, although this has not been clearly proved experimentally. Concentrations of sodium hydroxide below those necessary for the uniform, rapid attack of the steel surface are reported to be most effective in producing embrittlement2, 3. In the operation of steam boilers a similar type of failure has been found, mainly in riveted seams or other capillary spaces where the solution may concentrate and where high stresses may also exist. It is believed that in such localized areas the dissolved solids may reach a value many times the few hundred parts per million prevalent in the body of the boiler. While this type of boiler failure has been the subject of investigation for a period of 20 years1, an understanding of its mechanism and a rational basis for complete protection have not yet been secured. The Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease. Conditions Leading to Organized Safety Effort A brief sketch of conditions in Butte prior to 1912 is necessary to an understanding of the reasons for placing accident prevention on an organized basis. As early as the year 1884 there were a large number of small independent mining operations depending principally upon the production of silver, although even then copper was becoming prominent in the value of total production for the district. The Butte camp was then just emerging from the log cabin stage to that of a modern city.

Measures appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-l9 has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors—the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious airborne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects—one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I—Factors Comprising Degree of Individual Susceptibility Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust, exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

Temperature measurement in wells is an old practice and geothermal gradients have been of interest to geologists for many years.le2 Their application to the operation of oil wells is a more recent practice. It has long been recognized that temperature anomalies occur in drilling and producing wells but thermometers that could obtain a satisfactory record of the anomalies were not available. The normal geothermal gradient is con-sidered as being about one degree Fahren-heit for each 60 ft. of depth.4 This "nor-mal " gradient varies in different areas, but whatever it may be in an area there is little variation from the surface to as deep as the : drill penetrates. The normal gradient is appreciably changed by gas expanding ; from the reservoir into the borehole or by the movement of fluid through a borehole : while drilling, producing, or circulating. It is the resulting anomalies and abnormal gradients from which conditions in wells can be interpreted. Some of the applications of such interpretations are locating the position of oil or gas sands, permeable strata in a reservoir zone, gas-oil contact, source of water, casing leaks, and the top of cement behind casing. Thermometers A thermometer for use in wells must be sensitive and have a low thermal lag. The sensitivity should permit recording 0.2OF. or less for differential temperatures although the actual temperature need not be more accurate than 1°F. The thermal lag should be as low as rugged construction will permit in order to allow surveys to be made in a minimum of time. Of the several kinds of thermometers, these requirements are most easily obtained with the vapor-pressure, expansion, and electric-resistance types. Thermometers for use in wells may be self-contained—that is, the complete instrument is lowered into the well and a record made of the temperature—or the thermal element only may be lowered into the well and the temperature recorded at the surface. The vapor-pressure and expansion types are more adaptable for a self-contained instrument while the electric-resistance thermometer is more suitable for surface recording of temperatures. The self-contained instrument can be run against high pressure on a single wire line with only one operator required. The instrument and its hoisting equipment is easily portable and can be mounted on a small car. The disadvantages are a somewhat greater thermal lag and the necessity of completing a run before any temperature or temperature anomaly is known. A surface-recording thermometer has the advantage of being somewhat more sensitive and of having a lower thermal lag. Production of oil within the state of Pennsylvania in 1940 was slightly more than the 1939 total, and this increase was due entirely to the new flush Music Mountain field south and west of the main Bradford pool. The influence and magnitude of Music Mountain production will be separately described, inasmuch as it is an important producing unit within the state. Production Bradford Field The production listed herein for Bradford field includes only the part of the field that is within the state of Pennsylvania. Approximately 4000 bbl. per day, or 10 per cent of the total Production of Bradford field comes from Cattaraugus County, New York, and should properly be attributed to production obtained within the New York state area, although locally and economically the Bradford field, situated both in New York State and Pennsylvania, is included as a single statistical unit. The 1940 average production in the Bradford field was 34,831 bbl. per day, as compared with a daily average in 1939 of 35,340 bbl., or a decrease from 1939 of 509 bbl. per day. The decrease in production from the Pennsylvania portion of the Bradford field would have been more pronounced if a portion of the crude from the Music Mountain field were not included with the statistics for Bradford field. The decline can be attributed largely to the fact that more properties of lower average recovery were being drilled in 1939 and 1940 than in previous years, and apparently a subnormal amount of drilling occurred in 1938 and 1939, when about 2100 wells were drilled each year. The full effect of the 1940 drilling is not felt immediately and undoubtedly will affect the producing period of 1941. It appears probable that the water-flood area in the Bradford field has reached a definite peak unless some unusual economic condition should cause abnormal prices and an excessive rate of development such as occurred in 1936 and 1937. Virtually all of the production in the Bradford field was obtained by water-flooding methods, as natural or stripper wells are uneconomical and air and gas repressuring have not proved so efficient as water-flooding as a secondary recovery method. Central and Southern Pennsylvania Central and southern Pennsylvania produced a total of 4,604,763 bbl. of oil during the calendar year of 1940; that is, an increase over the 1939 total of 166,728 bbl. The daily average production was 12,581 bbl., or an increase over 1939 of 422 bbl. per day. Table I includes the total oil production for the state of Pennsylvania for the years 1937 to 1940, inclusive, and the daily average for each of these years. A paper on this subject can cover but a limited range. A thorough visualization of the subject would contemplate a comparative analysis of haulage machines and batteries of various types; the relationship of the storage-battery locomotive to other types of mine haulage should be considered and limiting factors in each case should be carefully developed. This paper will deal briefly with these factors. So far as the writer has been able to determine, the first storage-battery locomotives for mine haulage were manufactured in 1897 or 1898 and were tried out in the Pocahontas coal field, but they were not sufficiently satisfactory to justify their continued use. Battery explosions were frequent and caused serious damage to the wiring, electrical equipment, and the clothing and bodies of the motormen. Sulfuric acid was used as the electrolyte. Experiments were then conducted with locomotives bearing reels of flexible cable through which connection between the motors of the locomotive and the trolley wire was maintained. At first, these reels were turned by hand. Later, the reels were revolved by contact with the wheels of the locomotive, being raised out of contact with the wheels, by a lever, when necessary. About 1902, the plan of operating the reel, by chain and sprocket wheels, from one of the locomotive axles, as is still the practice, was devised. The popular floating motor-driven reel had its inception in the Pocahontas fields prior to 1906. The maximum radius of operation of the reel-type locomotive is about 500 ft. (150 m.) from point of connection with trolley wire. This is ample for room work and certain entry work, but the need for a machine that would operate entirely independently of the trolley wire was so great that, with the development of the storage battery, renewed efforts were made to manufacture a successful storage-battery locomotive. About 1908, the gasoline locomotive was introduced. In spite of many objections to this type of machine for such work, the fact that hundreds of these machines were purchased was proof of the need for a machine operating independently of the trolley.

The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. In this case, a careful furnace tender tries to avoid overheating the metal by keeping a mild fire; that is, a reducing fire which, unfortunately, results in gassing the metal. A dirty, slaggy furnace may result in gassing the metal by retarding the heating and prolonging the time necessary to bring the metal to the proper temperature, thereby increasing the chances of gassing in uncertain furnace atmosphere.
