The expansion coefficients of hexagonal (a) zirconium have been calculated from the lattice expansionparameters of both coefficientsofhexagonallow and high hafnium alloys in the range 0° to 600°C. It is found parametersofboththat the coefficients are straight-line functions of the temperature and that the effect of hafnium is to depress the mean coefficients by about 1 pct at room thattemperature and 9 pct at 600°C. The cubic (ß) form was stabilized so that its coefficient could be determined from 400' to 900°C. COEFFICIENTS of thermal expansion for hexagonal-close-packed (a) zirconium were determined up to 600°C (1112°F), without any interference from the effects of preferred orientation, by measurement of the lattice parameters obtained from a symmetrical back-reflection focusing X-ray camera. This paper combines the results for a 1.2 atomic pct hafnium alloy from an earlier report' with those for hafnium-free zirconium. The problem confronting the investigator is essentially that of getting sharp, high-angle diffraction lines which represent the material at a known constanl. temperature and chemical composition. In order to do this, it was necessary to use the proper X-ray emission wave length (Co K was chosen) and to have a fine-grained metal whose atomic spacings would be free from effects of cold work (the specimen was annealed) and to prevent a changing composition owing to gas absorption during the heating of the metal to temperature (the sample was heated in a vacuum). A summary of the effect of temperature on properties is listed in Table I which gives data for ordinary zirconium, as well as new values for the low hafnium metal. The coefficients of the linear thermal expansion that have been reported are given in Table 11. The discrepancies shown may be explained perhaps by the effect of preferred orientation, and McGeary and Lustman2 have done this successfully for sheet metal. The differences in texture cannot explain all the differences in expansion coefficient shown in Table II. liesults by the author agree most closely with those of Kroll.3 Chemical analysis of the high hafnium metal pre- viously reported1 showed that it was 98.22 atomic pct (97.40 wt pct) pure. The low hafnium metal was dehydrogenated Westinghouse crystal bar, designated SMZ-137A. Its analysis was as given in Table 111 (chemical analyses 5377, 5431, and 5432).

The reports for the years 1942 and 1943 were written in 1943 and 1944, respectively, and were summarized at the meetings of the Institute in February 1941 and February 1944, but were held in manuscript form until released for publication in 1945. 1942 During the year 1942, developments in the Peruvian oil industry continued to be subject to repercussions from the swelling war effort, which steadily diverted more of the normal supply of men and materials into war channels, and necessitated the rerouting of supply lines. The result in Peru was an increasing demand for crude oil and products. The production of petroleum in Peru in 1942 was 13,626,259 bbl., as compared with 11,935,584 bbl. in 1941—an increase of 1,690,675 bbl., or approximately 14 per cent. The largest increase, amounting to over 61 per cent, was from the Lobitos fields, but this increase was caused largely by the subnormal production in 1941. International Petroleum Company's production in the La Brea y Parinas field increased 727,111 bbl., or 7 per cent, whereas the Peruvian Government's production in the small Zorritos field declined 10,380 bbl., or approximately 20 per cent. The final production figures for the Ganso Azul field at Agua Caliente were not available for 1942 at the end of the year, but the production was believed to have increased approximately 80 per cent from 1941, or from 13,750 to approximately 25,000 barrels. Development and Exploration Exploration in Peru in 1942 was very limited and confined to areas adjacent to the older producing fields, and the efforts there were largely expended in the extension and development of the producing areas. This situation resulted partly from the shortage of transportation and drilling equipment, and also from the strong demand for increased production of oil. . International Petroleum Co. completed 69 wells during the year, including seven exploratory wells, three of which added moderate extensions to the proven areas. Sixty of the completions were oil wells and nine were dry holes. Lobitos Oilfields, at Lobitos and Restin, is understood to have concentrated its drilling effort on development rather than on exploration. The Peruvian Government operating at Zorritos confined its drilling to the development of the small producing areas previously found. During the year it announced plans to drill three exploratory wells in the Pirin area of southern Peru (see map on p. 638). It was reported that the Government had made a survey of the Sechura area (representing the southern part of the Northern National Reserve as shown on the map), but no work under this arrangement was announced. The Cia. Ganso Azul, at Agua Caliente, completed its No. 6 well as a producer on March 27, and during the year it completed the installation of a 400-bbl. topping plant.

THE great subject of interest in American affairs during February was the consideration of the proposed soldier bonus. This proposal was based upon the idea that, because most of the workers of the United States had enjoyed high wages during war, the soldiers were entitled to "adjusted compensa-tion" in order to equalize things. It overlooked the fact that the soldiers, themselves, had the opportunity to enjoy high wages in 1919 and 1920, when rates were highest. Apart from this, the whole project was founded on fallacies and involved what would be nothing less than economic crime. Although it looked as if the measure were destined to be railroaded through Congress, so great a storm of protest was pelted upon Congress that the present outlook is that the whole project will be abandoned. There was probably some increase in the physical volume of business during February. A rise in prices for agricultural products assisted the farmers mate-rially. These developments, however, are not to be construed as presaging any general upward movement. On the contrary, the current year is to be contem-plated as one of serious labor troubles, following inevit-able reductions of wages. These began in February in the form of an extensive strike in the cotton textile industry of New England, accompanied by some rioting in Rhode Island. The coal miners have had numerous conferences, without coming to any encouraging results, and the stage appears to be fully set for a general strike beginning Apr. 1. About the only question now is whether this will comprise both the bituminous and anthracite miners. If the latter refuse to go out, no serious shortage of coal is anticipated, the belief being that the existing stocks together with the output of the non-union mines will supply the demand, which is sub-normal even now. In the metal industries, lead and zinc were dull but stable. The weakening tendency in iron and steel that was manifest during January appeared to be checked, at least temporarily. Copper was charac-terized by a distinct weakness and a considerable decline in the market. This downward movement was inspired by the news during January that several of the important mining companies were taking steps to resume production. During February the demand for copper, both foreign and domestic, was poor.

Curiously enough, considering the relative accessibility of the two places, coal was reported at an earlier date in Saskatchewan than in British Columbia. Henry and Thompson were on the Saskatchewan River in February 1811, and on the 4th of that month recorded, while on Jack's Branch of North Brook, "I observed in one of the bends on the north side a bank of yellow clay, on which there appeared several horizontal veins of pure coal, of the best quality I have seen along this river." Later at Rocky Mountain House it was said: "a quantity of coal is tumbling into the water, as the current washes away the earth underneath. This coal abounds along the Saskatchewan, in some places forming solid beds several feet thick for several acres, which are washed by the river. In its pure state our smiths use it for the forge with equal proportions of charcoal made of birch or aspen, which answers every purpose for making and repairing our axles and other tools."1 It is needless to say that it was many years before this coal was used for any commercial purposes. Coal was first found on the northern end of Vancouver Island in British Columbia in 1835 at Beaver Harbor, where later Fort Rupert was established, where Indians had advised some of the Hudson Bay Company officials it would be found.2 The coal was used by smiths, and later on by the steamer plying along the coast.3 A report to the government in 1845 called attention to the coal reported in the neighborhood of Puget Sound and on the Cowlitz River, and that probably the samples used by the Hudson's Bay Company were obtained from the surface and. were not good. On September 7, 1846 a report on the coal situation was submitted by Ogden and Douglas, and a naval vessel was sent to investigate the report and was loaded with 62 tons dug out by the Indians, the seam outcropping along the shore.2 In 1847 some samples were sent to England by a returning war vessel. In 1849 the Hudson's Bay Company established a

INTRODUCTION The Luanshya Mine is situated in the southern part of the Zambian Copperbelt. The copper ore deposit is stratiform, and is preserved in a synclinorium known as the Roan/ Muliashi basin. Roan shaft (formally called No.14 shaft) is located at the eastern end of the syncline and is theoldest of the presently operating hoisting shafts, being sunk during the 1930's. It presently hoists some 45 per- cent of the total Luanshya Mine production. A cross-section through the shaft is shown in figure 1. The ore formation on the south limb is unmined on this section because until recently it was believed that such mining might cause damage to the shaft. This paper examines the influences of adjacent mining on this so-called 'shaft pillar', and describes the mechanics of subsidence of the pillar itself. GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE Figure 1 shows the general form of folding in the vicinity of Roan shaft. The north and south limbs of the main syncline approach parallelism, with the bottom of the trough fairly smoothly rounded. The axis of the - trough plunges to the west-north-west at 6° - l0°. A brief summary of the major lithologies present in the Roan basin is given in table 1, however, the performance of the overall structure during progressive mining of the ore horizon is controlled by the following features in addition to the mining method. Intraformational Contacts These are characteristically weak in most geological environments. The BC/RL7 contact is an unconformity between moderately weak quartz-biotite schists below (unconfined compressive strength 40 - 80 MN/M 2), and strong quartzites above (U .C .S. 170-200 MN/M2) Subsequent formations are conformable, and planes of weakness are generally the result of contrasting lithology (see below). Weak Interbeds The Rt7, RL6, RL5, RL3 and RU2 horizons consist predominantly of quartzitic rocks, i.e. conglomerates, quartzites and argillites, and as such are generally strong and considered suitable for the positioning of development. Between these however, lie two much weaker dolomitic horizons, the RL4 and RU1. The Rt4 is the main hangingwall aquifer, and must be drained prior to mining. Drainage results in an extremely weak, blocky cavernous horizon which usually requires support if exposed by development. Similarly, the RU1 formation is comprised mainly of dolomites and dolomitic arqillites which are weak and cavernous. In the eastern part of the Roan/

INTRODUCTION Recent research has shown that popu- lation balance models hold considerabl e promise as a basis for accurate mill scale-up from laboratory batch grinding tests. It has been shown that entire product size distributions from large ball mills can be predicted from data obtained in tests in small mills with errors of less than one or two percent. This level of accuracy has been demonstrated for batch grinding scale-up (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1980; Austin, 1973; and Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976) and for continuous grinding scale-up (Herbst, et a1., 1976; Herbst, Rajamani and Sanchez, 1982; and Herbst, Rajamani and Lo, 1982) in commercial mills up to 14.5 x 32 feet. A procedure which has been proposed for commercial mill design using the population balance approach and specific power information is shown in Figure 1 (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1980). Here batch grinding data (size distributions for various energy inputs) obtained in a small batch mill is input to an estimation program which determines the "best" set of breakage rate parameters from the data provided. In turn, these breakage rate parameters are input to a scale-up program along with traditional inputs such as: a) desired circuit throughput and product size b) circuit operating conditions including fraction of critical speed and fractional ball load, size distribution and % solids in feed and circulating load (if closed circuit). In addition, since the population balance approach relies on more detailed models of the grinding circuit sub- processes than the classical design methods do, it is necessary to provide input to the scale-up program on the nature of material transport through the mill (e.g. residence time distribution information) and classifier performance characteristics (e .g. selectivity functions). The scale-up program will make the design calculations including the selection of mill dimensions and drive requirements, will predict product size distributions throughout the commercial circuit and will provide information on the sensitivity of the design to errors in the design assumptions. In order to implement such a scale- up scheme it is necessary to have a computer program for parameter estimation and a program for scale-up prediction. A program which is suitable for parameter estimation, ESTIMILL, has been developed and tested on a wide variety of ores at the University of Utah. This program has been in use in

To a very large extent the quality of a mild steel ingot is determined by the manner in which it is poured into the ingot mold and its behavior during the first few minutes after it has been poured. The formation of the solid rim of metal around the periphery of the mold, the effervescent action of the liquid steel within this solidified rim and the upward or downward movement of the metal level are indications of what is going on beneath the surface of the liquid metal, especially at the interface at which solidification occurs. Observation of this "rimming action" enables an experienced observer to predict the thickness of the sound skin of the ingot and the location and extent of cavities or "blowholes" caused by entrapment of gases. The control of rimming action at the hands of a skillful steel pourer is a vital part of the control of quality in mild steel sheet, and the behavior of the liquid steel during the rimming period is a useful criterion of the melting and refining practices employed in the open hearth. The behavior of rimming steel during solidification depends primarily upon the evolution of gases from the molten metal and it is therefore a problem of considerable interest to determine the nature and amount of the gases evolved. A number of attempts to determine either the amount or the analysis of the, evolved gases have been reported. Klinger,1 in 1925, analyzed the gases extracted from rimming, semikilled and killed steel ingots and found that the chief constituent of the rimming gas was carbon monoxide. The relatively large amounts of nitrogen reported in his first few samples may have been due to incomplete removal of air from the gas-collecting mechanism. McKune2 reported similar studies of rimming ingots from which surprisingly large proportions of nitrogen and hydrogen were evolved. Ameen and Willners3 determined both the amount and composition of gases extracted from unkilled ingots with the aid of diminished pressure. Their ingots weighed only 80 kg. (176 lb.) and apparently were solid within two or three. minutes, so that their

Sound design of structures founded in or upon rock requires that the deformability of each rock member involved be characterized. This can be done by means of loading tests (plate bearing, flat jacks, borehole jacks, pressure chambers, etc.) or through convergence measurements (tunnel convergence, roof sag, etc.) in exploratory works. Analysis of data will be qualitative (degree of nonlinearity, creep behavior, scattering of results over a number of sites, etc.) and quantitative (modulus of elasticity or deformation). Some of these tests involve a very bulky apparatus and are expensive to perform. On the other hand, for the purpose of mapping and describing the various rock members which occur within a given site, many feet of diamond drill holes are frequently completed. Even with the optimum equipment and expert drillers, however, quantitative characterization of the rock units on the basis of tests on returned samples is apt to be misleading; the softer and weaker components of the rock tend to be lost and the fabric of the rock block- fracture system in situ is not sampled. Laboratory moduli of elasticity have proved to be consistently higher than in-situ values selected for engineering purposes. This led to the design of instruments which would operate in boreholes, combining the advantages of a reduced size and a deeper investigation, from the surface to several tens of feet. Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig's test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck's path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

The washabilities of typical bituminous coals are discussed in an effort to illustrate the importance of determining, by a complete washability study, the sulfur forms and their distribution in a coal. This study will then show the extent to which the sulfur can be removed. It should be emphasized that each potential application requires a thorough study because of the varying amounts of sulfur in different coals. It is not the intent of this paper to show the best results that flotation can produce, but rather to illustrate the potential of this process and point out the importance of improved flotation techniques where sulfur reduction is involved. It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur make up almost all of the total sulfur content, occur in varying amounts in different coals, and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam. Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported. Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and ones' state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing

INTRODUCTION The equilibrium constants for methane and for water, and for ethane and water have been calculated from experimental data for the two binary systems.2,3,11,12 These constants are for the two-phase systems for the temperature range of 100" to 340°F and the pressure range of 200 to 10,000 psia. The constants for ethane are greater than those for methane. Equilibrium constants for a natural gas from a natural gas-water system6 are about the same as those for methane. Equilibrium constants for water in all three systems are very nearly the same over the greater part of the range of temperatures and pressures studied. In ideal solutions, the vapor-liquid equilibrium constants for a component should be the same in all such solutions at a given temperature and pressure.5 Few solutions are ideal, and consequently the use of generalized constants often leads to error in situations where they do not actually apply. In decidedly non-ideal systems, it is desirable to have equilibrium constant data for the specific system. Vaporization equilibrium constants may be calculated either by thermodynamic methods or from experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data. In the thermodynamic calculation. the equilibrium constant K may be shown to be" K = fP,/fl'..........(1) where fPi is the fugacity of the pure component i at the given temperature and at the vapor pressure of the pure component, and fp is the fugacity of pure i in the gaseous state at the temperature and total pressure of the system. At best the thermodynamic calculation results in a K applicable to ideal solutions. Equilibrium constants calculated from Equation (1) have been found to have only limited agreement with experimental values, even though the solutions for which they were calculated approached ideality."'" If the more volatile component is at a temperature above its critical, the accuracy of the equilibrium constant for the component is made more doubtful by the use of the vapor pressure term under such conditions. In order to make the thermodynamic calculation on a component above its critical temperature, one must resort to one of the empirical methods of extrapolation of the vapor pressure to conditions above its critical point.13 Application of the thermodynamic equilibrium constant then to the methane-water or the ethane-water systems would be risky since the systems are non-ideal, and the methane and ethane are above their critical in most petroleum operations. The cracking of silicon particles embedded in an aluminum matrix occurs progressively over the range of plastic deformation of the composite specimen. The fracture probability of the particles increases with increasing particle size and decreasing silicon contents. The crack orientation tends to be perpendiculay to the direction of the maximum tellsile strain. An example of a direct association between matrix slip and particle cracking is shorn. ALUMINUM-SILICON alloys of commercial compositions fail by ductile fracture in three stages:' I) initiation of cracks in the silicon particles, 2) growth of cracks into cavities, and 3) rupture of the aluminum matrix separating the cavities. The present work is concerned with the first stage: the initiation of cracks in the silicon particles. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum samples with 2.8, 6.1, 9.6, and 13.2 vol pet Si, respectively, were cast from commercial al- loys. Machined tensile specimens (2 in. gage length) were annealed in air at 1000°F for 100 hr, and then pulled at a strain rate of 0.025 per min. The grain size (average linear intercept) of the aluminum matrix was 0.24 and 1.6 mm in the 6.1 and 13.2 pet Si alloys, respectively. The particle size of silicon in alloys of one composition (6.1 pet Si) was varied by either modifying the castings with 0.15 pet Na or prolonging the annealing time. The average particle size was measured by linear and planar analysis, assuming spherical particles of uniform size. The particle sizes and compositions of all samples are tabulated in Fig. 8, together with the identifying symbols used in the graphs. The respective numbers of broken and unbroken silicon particles were determined from metallographically prepared longitudinal sections by counting a total of approximately 2000 particles per sample. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Crack Initiation During Deformation as Function of Composition. Nominal stress-strain curves of four specimens of different compositions, but approximately equal particle sizes, are presented in Fig. 1. The fraction of broken particles, P (no. of broken particles/ total no. of particles), is shown in Fig. 2 as function of true stress and in Fig. 3 as function of nominal strain. Although lateritic ore deposits are relatively flat-lying, surficial ore bodies, the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist. Laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain trivalent metals - principally iron and aluminum, but also, locally, nickel and manganese. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Whereas bauxite generally is confined to the lateritic zone, some nickel deposits occur in both the laterite and saprolite zones. The evaluation of bauxite and lateritic nickel deposits thus has both similarities and differences. These ores have been formed by supergene, soil-forming solutions moving downward through zones of widely varying permeability within the weathering rock. Because the permeability varies widely, both vertically and laterally. the extent of weathering may vary greatly within short distances. Because the weathering process varies widely, the degree of metal concentration may also vary widely. It is not at all uncommon for a laterite to change, within a few centimeters, from a virtually valueless rock to a high grade ore. Moreover, the depth of weathering, and hence the depth and form of the ore profile, vary greatly. Obviously, for this type of deposit, a few grab samples or a few drill holes are virtually worthless. The evaluation of such a deposit requires a sophisticated statistical study based on thousands of carefully selected samples. As a rule of thumb, the cost of evaluating a large bauxite or lateritic nickel deposit will be about one cent per ton of ore in the ground. Thus, the cost of evaluating a several hundred million ton deposit may be considerable. The following factors must be considered during the evaluation: Type of Sampling: The best and most reliable samples for the evaluation of lateritic ores are taken along large, vertical channels in hand-dug pits. Where labor costs are high, some form of drilling may be used in place of pitting, but it is always wise to choose a drilling procedure after checking drilling results against a series of pit channel samples. The drilling may not reproduce exactly the results from pit channel samples, but it may be possible to derive a constant correction factor. If the physical character of the laterite varies within the deposit, it may, of course, be necessary to change the type of drilling, the correction factor or both. In some areas, it has been found empirically that augers, chum drills, vacuum drills, rotary drills, or core drills yield satisfactory results. The problem is to find which drilling technique gives results most similar to channel samples through the heterogeneous sequence characterizing the laterite in a given area. In lateritic nickel deposits, the drilling characteristics of the lateritic and saprolitic portions of the deposit are very different. Within the saprolite, the major nickel values are commonly found in weathered zones within less altered boulders - a type of occurrence which makes sampling very difficult.

INTRODUCTION IN our everyday life, visual perception plays perhaps a more important role than any of the other senses with which we are equipped by nature. It is, therefore, quite understandable that the average person associates 'with the term "atmospheric pollution," clouds of dust, palls of smoke or deposits of soot, phenomena which are so familiar to the residents of industrial cities. On the other hand, "air" is usually considered the prototype of the invisible, of the intangible, and any suspensions in the air which do not conform to this concept, are regarded as foreign to the atmosphere and thus as "pollution." According to Webster, the term "pollution" implies uncleanness, impurity, in short, something undesirable. Although the scientist often accepts popular concepts, he is generally inclined to suspect that apparently "obvious" phenomena imply, literally, "more than meets the eye." To show that this suspicion is also justified with regard to atmospheric pollution, is the objective of this discussion. It will be shown that what seems foreign to the air at first sight, is by nature an integral part of it, and that the more important aspects of pollution generally escape attention. THE ATMOSPHERIC CONSTITUENTS We can distinguish two classes of atmospheric constituents: the permanent gases, chiefly nitrogen, oxygen, traces of argon, neon, and others, and the variable constituents which include water in its different states, carbon dioxide, ozone, and various suspensions, either in gaseous, liquid or solid form. These suspensions, known by the collective term "Aerosol,"20 will be considered in detail. DUST There are two general types of aerosols: the first type is represented by the socalled "neutral" particle 3, commonly known as dust and experienced by everyone, as it is the more conspicuous type of suspensions. . It often represents a special problem to the mining engineer, the mechanical engineer, the industrial engineer, and many other professional men. Dust consists of finely divided solids derived from weathering, drilling, handling and preparation of rocks and coal. Dust may also consist of organic or inorganic particles resulting from manufacture of a variety of products such as flour, rubber, lime and steel, from traffic on land be it on the highways, on rails or in city streets, from decomposed vegetation or from volcanic eruptions. Perhaps the most reviled member of this class of suspensions is the soot and fly ashes from coal fires and other combustion processes. The cosmic source of dust, namely the injection of meteoric matter into the atmosphere, is of minor significance because the concentration of particles is exceedingly small despite the relatively large mass of material invades the earth’s atmosphere from space

The Pinto Valley, Arizona, plant of Cities Service Company is one of the newest copper producers in the United States, having started production in 1975. It is located a few miles west of Miami, Arizona, on the site of the Castle Dome Mine, a World War II operation which was shut down and its mill later moved and renamed the Copper Cities plant. The Pinto Valley concentrator uses six 18 ft (5. 5 m) diameter by 21 ft (6.4 m) long, 4000 hp, single-stage ball mills, taking crushed ore from four 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and eight 7 ft shorthead crushers. It has a design capacity of 40,000 stpd but has higher tonnage capability for an expanded concentrator. The copper porphyry-ore is mined by two 15 yd and one 20 yd shovels (11.5 and 15.3 cu m) and is transported to the primary crusher by 150-ton trucks. The dump pocket is relatively shallow (14 ft or 4. 27 m deep); and because of the width necessary for the 150-ton trucks, it was designed to use the ore itself instead of manganese steel as an abrasion- resistant lining, although a heavy steel cap protects the dump pocket top edge. The pocket has a capacity of 300 tons of ore. Water sprays under the dumping positions direct a fog toward the truck being dumped for excellent dust control. Breaking of oversize is done by a hydraulic impact breaker mounted on a hydraulically operated articulated arm situated at the side of the dump pocket. Again because of the shallow pocket, no splitter is used to protect the spider of the 60 in. by 89 in. Traylor gyratory crusher, which is equipped with a hydroset mechanism. Crushed ore at 8 in. (203 mm) drops into the 360 st surge chamber lined with AR plate and then is fed directly to the 60 in. (1.52 m) stock- pile conveyor by an 84 in. by 20 ft (2. 13 m by 6.1 m) four-speed apron feeder at a rate of up to 4000 stph. Early in 1977, Cities Service will replace the four -speed electric drive with a hydraulic pump and motor with infinitely variable speed. They are also studying the replacement of the apron feeder with an 8 ft wide (2.44 m) belt feeder similar to those at Similkameen and Palabora. Peak crushing capacity would then be increased to 5000 stph. The AR plate in the crushed ore pocket was installed in large, rectangular sheets which required much less embedded metal to hold it in place than would the more conventional, smaller arid square pieces of cast manganese steel. For duty in the crushed ore pocket, where wear is not severe, the AR plate is a satisfactory material. The new Palabora Figure-8 crusher also uses this design.

The year 1942 in Michigan was devoted largely to the development of fields discovered in 1941 but was also characterized by a great increase in prospecting for new productive horizons below the Dundee limestone. Some new fields were discovered but as yet these have shown few signs of being of major importance. Michigan's total production for 1942, of 21,754,000 bbl. of oil, as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, was second only to the record year of 1939 when 22,799,000 bbl. of oil were produced. All important fields were prorated throughout the year, and it is obvious that without proration a new all-time high would have been established for the state this year. Maes A map of the oil and gas fields of Michigan in 1941, published in the report for 1942, shows the main producing areas and should be referred to if information in regard to their location is desired.* The main producing zones were shown in the columnar section in the same publication. Development in Fields Reed City Field.—During 1942 the Reed City field, which ended 1941 with 112 producing oil wells, added 70 new producers to bring the total at the end of the year to 182 wells and 4700 proven acres. A south extension of the field developed during the year was in large part responsible for the increase. Approximately 9,000,000 bbl. of oil was produced from the field during the year, bringing the total accumulated production to the end of the year to roughly 11,750,000 barrels. Headquarters Field.—The Headquarters field, which started the year with ro producing oil wells, ended the year with 41 wells aid 1240 proven acres. Approximately 2,300,000 bbl. of oil was produced in 1942. Kawkawlin Field.—Although not a 1941 discovery, the Kawkawlin field has been actively developed on the 40-acre spacing plan during the last year, 42 producers having been completed, bringing the total number of wells at the end of the year to 77. Nearly 500,000 bbl. of oil was produced during the year.

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. DURING the course of an investigation of the plastic flow of aluminum aircraft sheet under combined loads, several problems arose in which analyses of the conditions leading to unstable plastic flow were needed. In order to provide these analyses, and in the hope of attaining a better understanding of the general problem of unstable plastic flow, the present study was undertaken. It is well known that unstable plastic flow is associated with a form of mechanical instability frequently observed during the plastic deformation of ductile metals. This instability is characterized by the fact that, at its onset, plastic straining will proceed at a constant magnitude of the externally applied forces. It is further typical that the resulting unstable flow is generally accompanied by the formation of a neck, a local bulging, or some other form of heterogeneous deformation. Perhaps the most familiar example of unstable plastic flow to the metallurgist is the formation of the neck in the ordinary tension test. It is well known that in this test most metals exhibit a maximum in the externally applied load, followed by the process commonly referred to. as "necking down." Instability in the simple tension test has been frequently discussed and numerous investigators 1,2.3,12 have derived the criterion for instability in terms of a critical rate of strain hardening. It is the purpose of the present study to extend the criterion for unstable flow to the more general case where the body undergoing flow is subjected to combined loads. It is hoped that the problems considered will provide a more consistent picture of the general features of this important form of mechanical instability. The most practical implications of instability in plastic flow arise in connection with sheet metal forming operations. In the formation of a great many sheet metal parts, the deformations are produced primarily by stretching. If the conditions which lead to unstable flow are fulfilled in such a formation, and if the resultant instability leads to a pronounced localization of flow, then the useful limit of ductility of the material will have been reached. It is also essential that the effects of instability be taken into consideration in any study of the plastic flow and rupture of metals under combined stresses. In general, when unstable plastic flow is initiated, straining becomes localized, the geometry of the test specimen changes, and the state of stress in that portion of the specimen undergoing plastic flow is no longer under external control. The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), 'and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

A brief description of this installation was included in a recent paper by H. Kenyon Burch.l The purpose of the present paper is to amplify Mr. Burch's description, as it is felt by the writer that the subject merits more than passing attention. In making a comparison between the common method of hoisting men in mine shafts, and elevator practice in high buildings, the former shows to great disadvantage both as regards safety measures and smoothness of operation. It is surprising that in view of the inducements offered, the step of applying the building equipment direct to the mine shaft has not been taken before, as in many respects the conditions of service are similar, and the objects to be attained are identical. Even without doing this, it is certain that safety to life and limb in the usual method of hoisting men underground can be greatly enhanced by the application to the mine hoist of some of the features of the building elevator. In the case under consideration, the elevator cage runs in a vertical, concrete-lined shaft compartment 5 ft. 11 in. by 5 ft. 6 in. (1.8 by 1.68 m.) in section and 585 ft. (178 m.) deep, while the counterweight runs in the pipe and ladder compartment of a twin shaft 102 ft. (31 m.) distant. The section of the division of this compartment occupied by the counterweight measures 2 ft. 4 1/4 in. by 3 ft. 101/2 in. (0.72 by 1.18 m.), and the counterweight is made in the form of a small cage which suffices to carry two men for the purpose of making inspections or repairs in the pipe and ladder way. The hoist is designed to carry a load of 7500 lb. (3401.94 kg.), ex-clusive of the cage, which weighs 7500 lb., at a maximum speed of 800 ft. (243 m.) per minute. It is installed in the main hoist and compressor building about 220 ft. away from the elevator shaft and is driven by a 160-hp. direct-current motor which is served by a 190-hp. motor generator set. A small direct-current generator mounted at the end of the motor generator set furnishes the current for the controller magnets, brake and fields of the hoist motor and generator.
