WHEN geologists began probing the grayish rock mass, natives of Adams County, Pa., called soapstone, they were paid scant attention. However, the soapstone, at first misidentified as pyrophyllite, was in reality sericite schist, a hydrous aluminum silicate whose chemical analysis resembles pyrophyllite, except that it has a slightly higher iron and potash content. In addition to its grayish color, sericite schist is foliated and has a greasy feeling much like that of talc.

A roof bolting theory and structural model are presented which explain the success of most roof bolting installations as the creation of a competent roof bolt reinforced rock arch within the immediate roof rock overlying an underground opening. Nickel, copper, and elemental sulfur can be recovered from a low-grade pyrrhotitepentlandite type concentrate by leaching with HNO3 in a pressure reactor at moderate temperature and pressure. The bulk of iron is converted to an oxide. Same results can be achieved by leaching in an open vessel under a reflex condenser for an extended period of time.

An exploring-drift, on the bottom level of the Curry mine, at Norway, Mich., on the Menominee range, cut a stream of water, which increased considerably the expense of pumping. The hope that the supply would drain off was not realized. It was decided to build a dam in the exploring-drift, as it was estimated that the cost would be recovered by the saving in fuel in less than two months.
