Computer use in mine planning has evolved from theory to practical application at the Bingham mine of Kennecott Copper Corp.’s Utah Copper Division. Traditional mine planning methods have been combined with computer technology to produce a more realistic calculation of ore reserves and mining plans. The techniques used are not revolutionary but are an expansion of previous mine planning methods using the calculating power of the computer. These methods can readily be adapted for planning use by practical mining men.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales' method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

For the third year in a row total value of the Nation's mineral production broke all previous records. A new peak of $20.4 billion was reached in 1964. So says the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Bureau's preliminary estimate for 1964 is $800 million higher than the value reported for 1963, and $1.6 billion greater than the 1962 figure. The unprecedented demand for minerals, has stimulated development of new mines and expansion of processing capacity in many parts of the country.

In making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I have tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has more of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 1 1/2 - inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer-is blown with

BICRYSTAL specimens grown from the melt have been used extensively for investigations of the influence of grain boundaries on plastic deformation. The bicrystals are usually of predetermined orientation prepared by seeded growth from the melt in milled graphite boats. This technique has been described in detail by Chalmers.' Since the direction that the grain boundary follows during growth is affected by both thermal conditions and crystallography, a difficulty arises in maintaining the grain boundary position constant along the length of the specimen. THE compositions of coexisting phases in the methane-propane-n-pentane system were determined at 160° and 220°F. throughout the two-phase region, at pressures above 500 lb. per sq. in. The experimental results permitted the calculation of gas-liquid equilibrium constants as well as the establishment of the critical behavior of this ternary system. The experimental results are presented in tabular form and a number of diagrams illustrating the phase behavior of this system have been included.

In the paper by Mr. Fernom, on Red Charcoal, read at the first session of this meeting, it was suggested that this fuel might be used in the blast furnace with greater economy than ordinary or black charcoal. In the discussion which followed the paper, it was stated that the charcoal furnaces of the Lake Superior District have used imperfectly burned charcoal with success, and that these furnaces have given the best results in fuel economy on record. On consulting some of our well-known metallurgical authorities the writer finds that the question of the use of red charcoal, or other imperfectly burned charcoal, or charred wood, is not at all new. In Percy's late work on Fuel, pages 409-414, are given a few facts, which are here condensed, as follows:

A study has been made of the crushing and grinding circuits by the Portland Cement Association in nine cement plants. Five of the plants used the wet process and four, the dry method. Both raw and clinker grinding were studied in the four dry processing plants. The raw materials used varied considerably from plant to plant. Actual power consumption data were obtained for the majority of the grinding mills in these plants. Previously representative raw and clinker samples had been obtained from the nine plants, and Bond1 and Hardgrove2 grindability tests were run on these samples. All pertinent data concerning the grinding mills, such as mill size and speed, ball charge size and weight, size distribution of feed, and discharge materials were also obtained. Thus it became possible to calculate the actual horsepower used by the various mills, and to compare this figure to the theoretical horsepower as calculated by several different methods.

The ores treated by the Canada Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Deloro, Ontario, have been described in a paper read before the Institute in 1881. They are gold-bearing arsenical sulphurets of iron (mispickel), carrying the theoretical proportions of 42 per cent. of arsenic, 20 per cent. of sulphur, and the remainder iron. The gangue is quartz, calc spar, and some talcose, slaty rock, evidently resulting from the decomposition of the wall-rock, which on each side of the veins is syenitic granite. The treatment of the ore consists of: 1. Crushing. 2. Concentrating.

The recently enacted federal surface mine law (P. L. 95-87) increases further the complexity of securing a reclamation permit This law intensifies the need to present the required reclamation plan in a thorough and comprehensive manner. One plan format, that used in construction performance contracts, offers promise of filling this need. Reasons for using the format of expressed, bilateral, negotiated contracts common to the construction industry, and the salient aspects of an application which uses this format are reviewed. Advantages of this procedure are seen to be improved mine planning, awareness of the total design job, potential for improved speed of permit acceptance, and improved cost control.

A good mining engineer is supposed to make a good mine. What then makes a good mining engineer? There certainly are a lot of answers to that question. The answers depend on whether you are one, work for one, or employ one. There are several cliches about mining engineers, and there is some truth in them-as there usually is in any stereotype. Hollywood chose Jeff Chandler to portray a mining engineer in Foxfire. The image here was of an almost one-man mining operation. When Chandler picked up a jackhammer, cradled it in his gut and started drilling out a tunnel round, it gave one the hives. I would have liked to see him finish just one round that way. There are limits to what even the most hairy-chested of us will try. We can assume that Hollywood feels it needs to over- draw any profession to add impact.

Open pit mining at Inspiration began in 1947 after 32 years of underground mining. Two separate pits are included in the operations: the Thornton pit, which measures approximately 2500 x 2000 ft, and the Live Oak pit, which is 1500 x 3000 ft. The geographic centers of the two pits are approximately 4000 ft apart, and at the closest point, the two slopes are only 500 ft apart. Today, much of the open pit mining is being carried out in areas which were broken by earlier underground block caving operations; less than 50% of the total material moved has required drilling and blasting. In the solid or virgin areas, the, material ranges only from soft to medium hardness, thus simplifying drilling, blasting and loading operations. As a result, most mining costs and problems have been centered around truck haulage, truck maintenance and the ever-increasing length of the grade haul.

As there exists a strong trend to computer assisted mine design, this twofold presentation will emphasize an examination of the parameters wed to create a mine design computer program. The program results are a first-order engineering design and evaluation of methods wed to handle the parting or inner burden found in thick-seam western surface coal mines. The alternative selections are draglines, backhoes, scrapers, front-end loaders, shovels, and bucket wheel excavators used in direct stow or haul-back techniques. The computer program wed in the design selection will be explained and typical input and output information shown.

The paper describes a cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte sodium sulphate acid and a catholyte containing caustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to form soda and reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant solution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate site a high-grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. the results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes which permit transfer of using or cations during electrolysis are described. The following notes on the cheap milling of a soft lowgrade ore-body in the State of Chiapas, Mexico, may be of interest. The ore-body in question was worked, not by itself, but incidentally in connection with a large extraction of concentrating-ore; and one 10-stamp battery of a 30-stamp mill used for re-crushing tailings, and provided with copper-plates, was set aside for the treatment of this particular ore, of which, during a period of 17 months, 10,274 tons, of 2240 lbs. each, were handled. THE Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district covers an area of some 2000 sq ml located in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, the north-western corner of Illinois and a portion of eastern Iowa around the city of Dubuque. Commercial deposits of lead and zinc have been mined in Iowa but the major discoveries during the past eight years have been made in Jo Daviess County, Ill, and LaFayette County, Wis. Activities in the state of Illinois are centered about the city of Galena, while those in Wisconsin are located a few miles south and west of the town of Shullsburg.
