In spite of its recognized irregularities, the cyanide-assay for copper has always been popular among volumetric methods, being easy and rapid, and reasonably accurate when the solution tested contains nothing but pure copper and ammonium salts. In order to secure this condition, however, especially in operati~ig on low-grade ores, tailings and slags of complex composition, it is the practice to precipitate the copper from the ore-solution,—usually by means of metallic zinc or aluminum. The copper thus precipitated in the metallic form must be dissolved again; and the separa tion is never, in practice, complete, since an appreciable amount of the copper remains behind in the first solution, and the second solution always contains some of the other metals of the gangue; so that the result is at best but partially satisfactory. ALTHOUGH the similarity between puzzolana, or trass, and blast-furnace slag, as seen by comparison of the analyses, is a well-known fact, blast-furnace slag has not been used commercially as a substitute for those cementing materials. The reason, the writer apprehends, lies in the fact that unless such slag is disintegrated or subdivided by rolls, the process must either be too costly, or the material is not in a fit and proper condition for the purpose. In order to produce a reliable slag cement, the slag must be ground together with the lime into an impalpable powder. The subdivided slag must, therefore, be perfectly dry, and, at the same time, friable. The stronger the hydraulic properties of the lime, the more reliable the slag cement will be, and practice has proved, that the slag from a gray-iron furnace gives the best results. The slag cement which has given the results shown in the annexed table, under pressure tests, was composed of six parts of slag, from a blast-furnace producing No. 3 foundry iron, and one part of lime, of medium hydraulic properties. The above-described class of cement bears storing as long as most Portland cements, and the cheapness of its production is self-evident.

The environmental status of underground mining operations is critical to the health and safety of the miners; particularly in a large mine, the multitude of interacting parameters that can favorably or adversely affect the environmental status makes the manpower requirement of the routine checking of specific areas and conditions a formidable one. While the concept of environmental monitoring for miners has been considered for some time, until recently the availability of sensors to reliably measure the parameters of interest severely limited the utility of such systems. The status of sensors for mine use and the evaluation of enviornmental monitoring systems is reviewed.

(with map on plate I.) THE coal-beds of Canyon City are situated six miles below the town, upon the Arkansas River. At this point the Rocky Mountains have thrown out from their main ridge two spurs. The one to the north, containing Pike's Peak and Cheyenne Mountain, is known as part of the "Rim Range;" the one to the west and south is known as the `1 Green¬horn Range." Against these syenitic mountains, the later rocks are piled and uplifted; at right angles to the direction of this main uplift is the axis of a lesser plication. On the north, west, and south, the pitch is steep, gradually flattening as it approaches the centre of the basin and rising again to the east at a pitch of about 5°, thus forming a perfect basin, the centre of which is only three miles east of the base of the Greenhorn Range.

The four papers making up this symposum have been prepared especially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathematical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismograph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspests of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

About eighty miles north of the city of Antofagasta, Chile, located just below the Tropic of Capricorn, there spreads a wide desert area where copper oxide outcrops can be seen with the naked eye. Numerous old mining works and dump heaps with the green of atacamite and chrisocolla shining in the blazing sun, attest to the work done by miners in the beginning of this century. The dry desert air preserves the footstep marks, paths and trails of old cartwheels from years back. The mining area known as Michilla and Panizos Blancos, is located on the high plateau at 3000 ft above sea level. Around 1920 a Bleichert ropeway was built, which carried ores from the best known mine to a wharf at the Michilla bay. High grade silicious ores were shipped to the Gatico Smelter further north or to smelters in the United States or Japan.

Predictions of creep closure for periods ranging up to more than 1,000 years are needed for designing a radioactive waste repository in a salt formation. Such long-term predictions must be based on the use of laboratory and field test results extrapolated by numerical modeling. Laboratory test results are presented which show highly variable creep behavior for salts from different sites as well as salts from the same site. Comparisons of measured creep closures against predicted closures are presented for two deep boreholes in Louisiana salt domes and for an exploratory shaft and drift in southeastern New Mexico bedded salt (WIPP). These data illustrate the significant uncertainties involved in long-term closure predictions and indicate the critical need for site-specific, in situ closure measurements over extended periods of time for repository design.

Sampling and assaying procedures were developed to obtain unbiased and reasonably accurate Au grade estimates in drill samples fm a coarse gold deposit. Gold grade comparisons were made by assaying 3 (1 assay ton) splits from each drill interval, then processing the entire reject thru a pilot plant for a blocked out zone. The result comparing the assay splits to the pilot plant results gave a ratio of 1 to 1.07. Another technique was developed to detect drill samples which has a coarse gold content by monitoring the varience. Testwork could be done on a 1 kg sample to improve the accuracy of the grade estimation if the variance was high for a drill interval.

During 1928 low prices in the East greatly restricted the Atlantic market for California petroleum. The situation was made difficult by only partial control of production. The month of December is estimated in the figures presented here and it is hoped that the differences in the final figures will be immaterial. Daily averages are used throughout. Production Daily average crude production for 1928 was 633,942 bbl., very little more than 1927. Natural gasoline production was 35,453 bbl. daily and the supply (crude and natural gasoline) was 669,395 bbl. However, potential supply was 785,621 bbl. daily, 47,436 more than that of 1927. This is accounted for by more production being shut in so that 116,000 bbl. daily was conserved in 1928 which would otherwise have been produced. Fig. 1 shows production by months for 1928. The mathematical description of solids transport in mills is an important aspect of the development of comprehensive models for the analysis, simulation and control of grinding systems. The basic mechanisms of particle transport and mixing, including gravity flow, carrier fluid transport, and "diffusion", are reviewed and their relative importance in wet and dry ball mills is discussed. Specific models for transport and mixing in dry, grate-discharge and wet, overflow ball mills are described. The limitations of the models, parameter estimation problems, scale-up criteria etc. are discussed and the conditions which lead to particle size dependent transport, and hence to internal classification in the mill, are described in detail.

ThE distribution of gold is obviously much wider than is Commanly supposed. Resides the usual matrices, vehicles, or associates, such as quartz, pyrite, chalcopyrite, etc., I find it occurring in quite a range of common rocks. For example, at the Rhodes mine, in Gaston County, a body of 9 to 12 feet of decoroposed, light-gray gneiss was worked together with the strings of quartz, and yielded from six to ten dollars to the ton. A mine in Moore County yields its gold mainly from a feldspathic schist. In the famous King's Mountain mine, in Gaston County, the gold is obtained not only from the seams of quartz in a blue, hydromicaceous schist, but a 60-foot ledge of grayish-blue, fine-grained, schistose limestone is quarried out bodily and sent to the stamps. It is gold-bearing throughout. In Montgomery County the singular concretionary, conglomeritic, quartzite schist, which contains Emmons's palceotrochis, is gold-bearing over wide tracts of country. This fact was noticed by Dr. Emmons. But a still more striking and significant fact is, that a large part of the gold of Montgomery, Davidson, and Randolph counties,

US underground mine production of nonfuel minerals was 153 million tons of crude ore in 1971, according to a recent US Bureau of Mines report compiled by Dravo Corp. Underground capacity includes all nonfuel mineral commodities and is distributed into three general categories: (1) metallic ores; (2) nonmetallic ores; and (3) construction materials, such as clay, sandstone, and limestone. All three categories are produced by a combination of open-pit and underground methods. While US underground mining represents only 5.9% of total domestic capacity, it is significant in the types of products produced. Domestic supplies of potash, trona, A lead, zinc, sulfur, and fluorspar are almost exclusively recovered from underground mines, as well as a significant portion of the gold, silver, molybdenum, and salt supply.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) SOME statements have already been made to the Institute in reference to the cost of other departments of the above-named works, and some details have been given in tabular form.* For the purpose of the present paper it may be sufficient to say that this converting works is made up of three buildings, a cupolahouse, an engine-house, and a converting-house. The machinery and fixtures comprise two blowing-engines, two pressure-pumps, two five-ton converters, five hydraulic cranes, three pig-iron cupolas, four spiegel cupolas, two lifts for the cupolas, together with the usual arrangements of smaller parts. Every effort was made in the construction to combine efficiency of operation with durability, and the general course of the operation of the works during two and a half years seems to warrant the belief that the large outlay has been fully justified. • In the accompanying tabular statement all items on vouchers less than ten dollars, and all freight items have been omitted. * See Transactions of the. Actual field data from several wells are used to illustrate the application of the method of determining the average density of the fluid column in a flowing oil well in the Yates field, Pecos County, Texas. The depths of the wells in the Yates field vary from 900 to 1700 ft., depending on surface elevation and the location of the wells on structure. Production rates over 8000 bbl. per hour have been determined and many wells are capable of producing 2000 bbl. hourly. Gas-oil ratios are usually below 400 cu. ft. per barrel, but a few wells high on structure have produced over 3000 cu. ft. per barrel. Incidentally, tubing wells has cut these high ratios to as low as 400 cu. ft.' By common agreement of the operators all wells making ratios over 400 cu. ft. will be tubed. Daily production of the field is prorated to 110,000 bbl. from an open-flow potential of 5,000,000 bbl. based on hourly open-flow gages.
