To date information is somewhat limited concerning the strength and bearing capacity of floor strata, which is of great importance where proper roof control is desired. If the bearing strength of strata is not known, the support may be excessively strong in relation to the support capacity of the floor, with the result that strong props sink into the floor strata, giving them dubious value as a roof support. The method described is used to determine how tests are made on dry rock to determine the required support area for the base of props or other structures which may rest on rock strata in mines. Relationships were established for the bearing capacity of rocks which were subjected to loads by means of bearing areas of various sizes ranging from 0.09 sq cm (.014 sq in.) to 700 sq cm (108.5 sq in.). This permits the evaluation of the bearing capacity of rocks by testing small areas for the de- termination of the capacity of larger areas.

World consumption of petroleum and related fuels for civil purposes in 1939 was close to 2,024,000,000 bbl., or approximately 110,000,000 bbl. more than in 1938, the United States accounting for 96,000,000 bbl. of the increased amount. With the annexation of Czechoslovakia and part of Poland, civil consurnption in Germany during 1939, notwithstanding sevre rationing in the last four months of the year, was 54,000,000 bbl., or only 1,600,000 bbl. less than in 1938, and domestic production of pctroleum and related fuels was some 34,000,000 bbl. short of civil consumption. The mounting petroleum requirements of the military forces of greater Germany are, of course, not included in these figures of civil consumption. To supply this deficiency Germany now must rely almost exclusively on the Rumanian fields, which in 1939 produced about 35,000,000 bbl in ewes, of the Rumanian civil consumption. THE Sierra Consolidated Mines Co., organized in 1909, owns, together with other holdings, practically all of the productive mineral area in the Ocampo district. Lying within this area are 15 mines, large and small, that had previously been worked and appear to have yielded, since the discovery of the camp, about 100 years ago, bullion of a total value of over $50,000,000. The deepest mine, the Santa Juliana, had been worked to 1,100 ft. below the outcrop. The reopening of the mines involved, first, extensive and thorough development to open up the known ore-shoots at greater depth and explore the ledges for additional shoots, and, second, a revision of existing equipment and methods, so as to increase output and reduce cost of production. This paper will give some account of the metallurgical treatment and a description of the new mill to be built at El Salto.

THE application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydro-carbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production.

There has been a recent interest in studying the action of anhydrous sulfur trioxide on ores to convert the metal values into a water-soluble form as a substitute for leaching by sulfuric acid. For example, Svenke1 converted the small amounts of uranium in slate ash into a water-soluble form by treating the material with SO, at about 600°C. Chao and Sun found that a variety of aluminum-bearing minerals could be sulfatized by SO, in the temperature range 400° to 600°C usually in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium sulfate. Kruse3 patented a process for beryllium recovery from the low grade ore in Utah by first reacting it with SO, at 560° to 750°C then leaching the product with water. In the present report, the action of SO, was examined in the temperature region 100°-300°C which was not investigated by those workers. Experimental Tests were conducted on a beryllium ore sample from Utah, the analysis of which is given in Table 1. It corresponds closely to a saponite ore type as given by Crocker et al. The location, geology, extractive technology, as well as the growth of uses are reviewed. An expanding recent growth has been in the use of solution cavities for storing hydrocarbons. The development of the technology to obtain and operate these storage cavities as well as the development of the methodology for solution mining of the soluble salts are discussed.

Largest uranium deposit in the Northwest is Dawn Mining Co.'s Midnite mine on the Spokane Indian B Reservation. The orebodies lie along the contact of granite and metamorphosed sedimentary rock and are controlled by faults and shear zones near the granite contact. In the oxidized zone the deposits consist mainly of the secondary uranium mineral meta-autunite; sooty uraninite and primary uranium minerals are known to occur at greater depths. Elevations in the mine area range from 2500 to 3500 ft. The rolling hills and low, rounded mountains are covered with grass and evergreen trees.

FIG. 1 shows a volute aging break which developed spontaneously in a hardened and tempered steel helmet between 19 and 38 days after it had been tested ballistically. A similar break, shown in Fig. 2, developed spontaneously in a similar helmet about 40 days after the ballistic testing. In this case the rupture occurred abruptly and with a loud report. Several weeks later, after the photograph for Fig. 1 was taken, a similar doubling of the volute crack occurred in this helmet, starting from the end of the eyelash crack near A and spreading thence to the left contra-clockwise for about ½ in. The negatives from which these pictures are made have not been touched up in any way, save writing the letters on them. For the purpose of developing combinations of higher strength and conductivity than are obtainable by heat treatment alone in the age-hardening copper alloys, an investigation has been made of the effects of combinations of heat treatment and strain hardening on the properties in question. The investigation was limited to a study of the alloys containing nickel and silicon; nickel, silicon and cadmium; and cobalt and silicon. The experiments made in the course of the study are described in this paper in three groups: 1. The effect of hard drawing subsequent to heat treatment on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys. 2. The effect of low-temperature aging on the properties of heat-treated and hard-drawn alloys. 3. The effect of strain on the rate of aging of quenched nickel-silicon-copper alloys.

The mineralogy of the solids contained in the black-water effluent from coal preparation plants has been investigated. Samples were obtained from 13 locations, representing major coal seam in the Appalachian, mid-continent, and western regions of the United States. On the average, the samples were found to contain 60% carbonaceous material with the balance as mineral matter. The mineral fractions from all of the samples from the eastern half of the United States were found to be remarkably similar, consisting of over 50% illitic clays; about 10-15% each of kaolinite, calcite, and quartz; and lesser amounts of chlorite and pyrite. The western samples were somewhat different, generally containing significant quantities of montmorillonite clay. Flotation may be wed to recover additional clean coal contained in the black-water discharge.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must he secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

The new, internationally-owned Savage River Mines iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project, built and operated by Pickands Mather & Co. International, was dedicated March 6 at Port Latta, Tasmania, Australia. Construction of the $79 million project began in 1965 and involved an open pit mine and concentrating plant plus a complete town for about 350 employees at Savage River; a 53-mile pipeline to transport the concentrates; a pelletizing plant and shipping facilities at Port Latta, which is on Bass Strait separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland. The project has a rated capacity of 2.25 million Ltpy of high-grade magnetite pellets, which will be sold to five Japanese steel companies under 20-year contracts. The open pit mine is located in the central portion of the Savage River deposits. Mining equipment, capable of moving 10 million tpy of ore and overburden, consists of four 6-cu yd electric shovels and 12 50-ton trucks. The concentrating plant, with a design capacity of 5 million tpy of ore, will use magnetic separators to upgrade the ore, which averages 38% iron, to a concentrate averaging 67% iron.

In view of the recent important discussions before this Institute on the genesis of metalliferous deposits, certain features in the occurrence of gold which seem to be more clearly developed in Brazil than elsewhere can hardly fail to be of interest. The disturbance of surface land to support the underground mining of coal requires several hundred acres to produce easily in excess of $1 billion in sales at a moderately sized mine over 20-30 years. Due to the recent influx of environmental legislation, these surface operations must now undergo complete reclamation upon permanent cessation of production. This reclamation procedure has become so complex that the cost of reclamation must be a major consideration in the design of a new mine. This presentation will discuss these costs as they may be methodically evaluated and surcharged as a percentage of the product price. When placed in the proper, logical perspective, it is anticipated that the obstacles involved in this process may be minimized.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory was involved in an oil shale fragmentation research program in cooperation with a Consortium of industrial companies to investigate the feasibility of using modified in-situ (MIS) recovery of oil from oil shale. Field tests were conducted at the Anvil Points Mine, Colorado, in the thick oil shale beds of the Green River formation. Part of the program included obtaining data about fragmentation by instrumenting the tests with accelerometers, velocity gauges, and the CORRTEX technique (Continuous Reflectometry for Radius versus Time Experiments). Some of the rock motion data from accelerometer and velocity gauges is presented, along with some conclusions. In addition, the signal recording system is briefly explained. The CORRTEX technique is discussed, and some results on explosive performance and stem behavior using the method are discussed.

CONVENTIONAL usage defines emery as a natural aggregate of corundum and magnetite. Because emery bodies contain abundant spinel two types are recognized, spinel-bearing and spinel- free. Watson and Steiger1 introduced the name spinellite for emery in which spinel is a major constituuent, but this term has not been generally adopted. Spinel emery grades locally into spinel magnetite rocks with or without accessory corundum. Even this variety has been used commercially in the past. The term emery therefore applies to natural aggregates composed of corundum and magnetite; corundum, magnetite, and spinel; and spinel and magnetite.

These furnaces are of the ordinary Siemens type, and present no special peculiarities of construction. The bed of each is 8 feet by 20 feet clear inside of the walls and ports. The producers are placed at a distance of about 200 feet from the furnaces, and the gas is collected in an iron tube and led across the yard overhead. It then drops underground into the gas flue, and is distributed to the furnaces. A considerable weight of floor-plates over the valve-pits is included in account 39, but none of the general stock of floor-plates for the mill were charged to the furnaces. In Table No. 1 is shown the money cost of the furnaces as distributed to the several accounts named. In Table 2 is shown the proportion of each account due to each of the several items or classes of expenditure named.. It is thus rendered possible, almost at a glance, to determine the money value in this particular case of each of the items named. The regular work of three of these furnaces in heating steel blooms for the months of January and February, 1877, was 77 rounds per week of 60 blooms each, or 4620 30-foot rails per week. Each furnace will heat 8 14-inch ingots, for three rails each, at one time.
