ANYTHING that may be said about "too much coal" must seem rather incongruous just at this time when two-thirds of the mines in the United States have been idle for nearly four months and a temporary coal shortage looms as more and more of a possibility. It is the purpose of this article, however, to deal primarily with the fundamental ills of the bituminous-coal industry, which, when summed up, can be expressed in one word-overdevelopment. During recent years the bituminous-coal industry in the United States has been seldom, almost never, in a state of normal business health with production run-ning evenly, prices steady and the market absorbing the output from week to week. There has been either a condition of feverish activity or apathetic sluggish-ness. We have had, for example, the intense strain on production during the war years with heatless days and lightless nights, followed by the slump late in 1918 which lasted through the greater part of 1919 when coal was a drug on the market. Then came the panicky demand of 1920. Competitive buying forced prices up to the highest levels in history. This demand in turn fell off suddenly in November, 1920, and the market remained apparently paralyzed all through 1921. During the latter year, lack of buying forced intermit-tent suspension of mining in all fields and prices averaged less than actual cost of production.

A continuous on-line particle-size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 µ) to 20 w are discussed in detail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from both a practical and a theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

With plant start-up slated for early 1966, Palabora Mining Co. will take its place among the large copper mining properties of the World. Located near the town of Phalaborwa in the Lowveld area of Transvaal Province, approximately 250 air miles northeast of Johannesburg, Palabora is the result of a cooperative project between Rio Tinto-Zinc Corp. and Newmont Mining Co. Other large shareholders are American Metal Climax, Inc., Union Corp. Ltd., and Selection Trust Ltd. Earliest known mining activity in the area is thought to date back about 400 years, when the Bantu tribes were migrating southward from the great lakes of Central Africa. Old workings and hand tools have been found in numerous places on the flanks of Loolekop, the hill that contains the outcrop of the Palabora orebody. Nearby ruins of small furnaces give added evidence of the knowledge of copper smelting possessed by these natives.

Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), Section 516 (b), requires the underground coal mining operator to "adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence cawing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mine stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable we of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology wed requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner.. . ." Congress also directed the Secretary of the Interior to promulgate regulations to implement the law. As a result, the control of subsidence from underground coal mining to minimize surface damage has become the mandate of a federal law. This paper discusses the mechanics of subsidence and the effects of subsidence on ground features. This paper also summarizes some measures used to minimize the possibility of damage to structures as a result of subsidence due to underground coal mining.

The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will he sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

The gravity concentrator of the Heela Mining Co. was originally constructed in 1888 by the Milwaukee Mining Co., which was operating the Gem of the Mountains mine. It was purchased by the Hecla Mining Co. in 1900, and placed in operation 2 years later. At that time the capacity was only about 200 tons a day, but many additions and changes in equipment have been made so that the present capacity is about 800 tons. One of the outstanding improvements made was the substitution of Callow flotation cells for vanners, which occurred in 1915. THE year 1924 showed even less drilling in Kentucky and Tennessee than the preceding year. The operators in this section, however, are anxious to resume development work and are only waiting for a higher market for crude oil before starting such a program. In Kentucky, during 1924, 1605 wells were completed, the combined initial daily production of these wells being 25,599 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled 1176 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 368 were dry holes. The average initial production of the oil wells was 21.8 bbl. per well. In Tennessee, 28 wells having an initial daily production of 1199 bbl. were completed during 1924. Of these, 3 were oil wells, 6 were gas wells, and 19 were dry holes. The initial production of the three oil wells was 400 bbl. Of the total number of wells drilled in Kentucky in 1924, 73 per cent. came in as producing wells; and of those drilled in Tennessee, 10 ½ per cent. came in as producing wells and 20 per cent. as gas wells. In Tennessee, during 1924, wildcatting dropped off considerably and only about one-half as many wells were drilled as in the preceding year; in Kentucky, on the other hand, there was only a slight curtailment in drilling, there being 1943 wells drilled in 1923 as against 1605 in 1924.

On June 30, 1960, ground was broken for the construction of the facilities to mine, concentrate, and agglomerate the iron ores of the Atlantic City, Wyo., area which has become known as the "Atlantic City Project." This was a historic occasion for Columbia-Geneva Steel Division of United States Steel Corp. When completed, the installation will be the first integrated iron ore beneficiation plant west of the Mississippi River producing an agglomerated product. This Project, named for a nearby ghost mining town, is located in central Wyoming on the south-east flank of the Wind River Mountains. It is 16 miles north of the South Pass, where the early pioneers who followed the Mormon and Oregon Trails crossed the Continental Divide. White men first penetrated into this area in October, 1812, when Robert Stuart Party brought the returning Astorians through South Pass on route to St. Louis from the Columbia River area. Further interest in the area developed when gold was discovered in the sands of Rock Creek and the towns of Atlantic City and South Pass City were founded.

The method of using the bromine process of determining sulphur in steel, described below, is in successful use at the Midvale Steel Works. Ten grams of drillings are weighed out and put into the 1/2-liter flask A, with long neck. The flask is connected with a wide glass tube C', which, in its turn, is connected with the absorption bulbs B, containing HCI, 1.12 specific gravity, and ahout 5 C.C. of bromine. The wide tnbe C causes the vapor to condense and flow back into the flask A during boiling. The bulbs B connect with a long glass tnbe, which may be made to carry off the bromine fumes through a hole in a window, or, better still, through a flue with powerful draught. The connections being made, 100 C.C. of boiling water are run in through the thistle tube T. The air is thus completely driven out of the flask. 100 C.C. of HC1 (about 1.19 specific gravity) are then run in. When the gas begins to run rattler slowly through B, heat is applied until boiling gradually ensues. The steel being completely dissolved, the apparatus is disconnected, and the contents of B rinsed out into a beaker of 100 C.C. capacity, into which a few C.C. of a concentrated solution of BaCI, have been previously introduced. Heat is then applied (best by means of the hot iron plate) until the bromine is completely driven off and the BaSO, has settled nicely to the bottom. The BaSO4, is then filtered off on a small

Laboratory crater tests were performed in two-dimensional plates and three-dimensional .blocks of Holston Limestone. Fractures in the blocks were exposed by sawing through the crater region, and a technique employing dye penetrants is described for examining the resulting fracture systems in both blocks and plates. Crater fracture patterns changed from extension of radial fractures to spa11 fractures parallel to the free face as charge depths were increased. The amount of fractured rock was found to be greater than the amount determined from standard crater volume measurements. Graphs and photographs illustrate these findings.

During 1931 Peru maintained its position as the ninth oil-producing country of the world, with an output somewhat greater than that of Trinidad and Argentina, and considerably less than for Colombia and Mexico. Outside of the three old producing fields, there was little or no activity of importance; no new areas were brought in and no extensive wildcat drilling was done. On the other hand, the old fields continued to produce at a rate only slightly below normal and such restriction as existed may be attributed to market and not to field conditions. Political disturbances during the spring led to several strikes in the field, causing temporary suspension of activities there. However, such troubles were of short duration and no permanent loss of production was sustained. The production in barrels during the past three years for the three coastal fields of Peru has been as follows: The oil industry in Peru is relatively old; 29 wells were drilled in the Negritos area between 1888 and 1898. Prior to 1900 the production was relatively insignificant but from 1900 until 1929, it has slowly but steadily increased to a maximum annual production of over 13,000,000 bbl. The potential production of the fields since 1939 has exceeded the production of those years; the actual production has been controlled by market conditions. The production of the property of the International Petroleum CO. since 1900 has been just over 100,000,000 bbl. The production from the Peruvian fields will doubtless remain for some years at approximately the same level as during the past few years.

Prior to 1950 Magma's ore production came from two parallel, steeply dipping, east-west striking mineralized faults, one called the Main or Magma vein and the other the Koerner vein, which lay about 1100 ft to the south. This vein system has been explored and mined over 9000 ft horizontally and 4800 ft vertically. In 1950 continued exploration led to the discovery and development of replacement orebodies in the Devonian limestone zones adjacent to the veins. These replacement deposits occur in the eastern part of the Magma mine and follow the strike and the 30º east dip of the host limestone. Strike length of the ore bodies varies from 250- 500 ft and thickness from 15-125 ft. The orebodies are large tabular masses with chalcopyrite and bornite being the dominant ore minerals. Hematite and pyrite are the most abundant gangue minerals. Incompetent limestone, shale, or a porphyry sill hanging wall is characteristic of portions of the replacement beds. In many instances the ore is blocky, badly fractured and intermixed with layers of limestone gouge, pyrite and hematite.

THE modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio of stress within the proportional limit to corresponding strain. This property, as thus defined, is a constant for each kind of material; and in tension or compression is usually designated by the symbol E. The modulus of elasticity serves as an index of the stiffness of a material or a measure of its ability to resist change of shape under stresses not higher than the proportional limit. In view of the frequency with which the modulus of elasticity is used in engineering calculations, it is surprising to note the uncertainty that exists as to authentic values, and the marked lack of published information relating to the variation of the constant E within individual alloy systems. A value of 10,000,000 lb. per sq. in. has been quoted as representative of aluminum and its alloys. This value has been found to be approximately correct for pure aluminum and aluminum alloys in which the total percentage of the alloying elements is low, but seriously in error in the case of alloys that contain relatively large amounts of the alloying elements.

IN a previous study of the effect of atmosphere on creep-rupture properties,' it was shown that the relative strength of nickel in air and in vacuum may be reversed by a change in either stress or temperature, Fig. 1. At low stresses and high temperatures the metal is stronger in air but stronger in vacuum at high stresses and low temperatures. A mechanism to explain this reversal was proposed involving two competing processes; oxidation strengthens the metal while adsorption of gas lowers the surface energy, relative to that in vacuum, and reduces the work required to propagate a crack. (communication to the Secretary?).-In discussing the question of the deoxidation of steel and material suitable for performing this function at the end of the heat, it would seem logical also to include the question of prevention of oxidation in the steel or the formation of iron oxide, FeO. I refer to the use of manganese in the basic open-hearth and basic Bessemer processes. The advantages of high manganese in pig iron for these processes have evidently been clearly understood in Germany for a number of years, although little has been written in regard to the exact manner in which the benefits are obtained. In this country, while we make no steel by the basic Bessemer process, our basic open-hearth process is becoming more and more important. Until 10 years ago, in this country, manganese in the pig iron for this process was considered of little value and by many writers it was spoken of as a disadvantage. During the past 10 years, however, in certain parts of the United States, higher contents of manganese in basic pig have been used with considerable success, although there is apparently nothing in our technical literature to show the reasons for this trend. A German book, "The Basic Open-Hearth Steel Process" by Carl Dichmann does, however, offer an explanation. Dichmann says that if the charge for either of the above-mentioned processes contains 3 per cent. of manganese or above, satisfactory steel.

Two unique processes of reclaiming zinc from various secondary materials were developed and have successfully been operated for years by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. These processes were established based on the characteristic and local energy conditions; i.e., (1) at Miike Smelter, located above the largest coal deposit in Japan, a combination of slag fuming and semi-blast furnace (MF)processes takes advantage of using coal and the carbon bearing briquette residue from the vertical retort plant as reducing agents, (2) on the other hand, at Kamioka Smelter, a direct reduction of zinc-bearing lead slag by using electric furnaces is of advantage in view of cheap electric power supply from our own hydraulic power plants. The former also consumes lots of zinc bearing fines and drosses from various steel plants, fabricators and secondary zinc smelters, while the latter, zinc leach residue from its own electrolytic plant

THE increased importance and value of chemical analysis in connection with metallurgical operations is largely, if not entirely, due to the increased accuracy of the analytical methods used for the quantitative determination of the foreign elements always associated with the metal operated upon. This applies especially in the working of iron and steel, and to the determination of the amounts of such elements as phosphorus, carbon, and silicon. The influence of greater or smaller amounts of these elements upon the physical properties of iron and steel will be better understood when the proper experiments shall have been made upon samples whose chemical composition is known with almost absolute certainty. From the present standpoint of analytical chemistry, it is easy to see that at least one reason for the failure of many attempts to solve this problem, is the inaccuracy of the analytical methods used. Even at the present time the frequent want of agreement (over and above the unavoidable error due to manipulation) between chemists working on the same sample, leads one to think that there is still at least a choice in the methods used. It is true that very frequently a faulty method in the hands of a skilful analyst may be made to give corroborative results

The Institute assembled in the room of the Board of Trade, Mercantile Library Building, on Tuesday evening, May 20th, at 8 o'clock P.M, Hon. W. D. Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. The Council reported, through the President, that the Institute had during' the past year, held three meetings, in New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. The substance known as carbonite, or natural coke, has been several times the subject of comment before the Institute. The most important contribution hitherto made to the discussion is that of Dr. Henry Wurtz, of Hoboken,* who states, upon the strength of a chemical analysis, that carbonite is not a coke, but contains 14.08 per cent. of volatile combustible matter. In 1882 a mine was opened upon a carbonite seam, near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Va., by Messrs. Jewett & Brother, of that place. The seam, which dips westerly at an angle of about 30 degrees, was struck at the depth of 137 feet with a vertical shaft, and followed on the dip 325 feet, at which depth gangways were opened north and sooth. For these statements (having made no personal examination of the locality), I am indebted to Mr. Albert Blair, of Richmond, and for the following section, to Mr. John Bladon, engineer at the mine. The section was taken in the face of the gangway, February 17th, 1883. It shows an aggregate thickness of 15 feet of "coke," of which about 5 feet were extracted by the system employed last winter. It is reported that under the "coke" seam there is a thick seam of highly bituminous coal, which has been extensively worked on a neighboring property, a little south of the Jewett colliery, the coal being sold for gas-waking.
