Silver-copper-lead deposits In Precambrian, Permian, and Cretaceous red-bed sequences near Van Horn, Texas, have the following features In common: (1) mineralization controlled by steeply dipping fractures in sandstones, (2) lack of ore in overlying and interbedded limestones, (3) absence of igneous intrusions, (4) sulflide ores without typical hydrothermal gangue minerals, and (5) associated arsenic, molybdenum, zinc, and cadmium but not gold. Ore was probably deposited along fractures by reaction between low-temperature, oxidizing, metal-rich ground waters and sulfide-bearing waters or rocks. Detailed mapping and studies of fracture patterns indicate that mineralization occurred during Basin and Range extensional deformation, thereby postdating major Trans-Pecos igneous activity.

THE manufacture of pig iron for conversion into steel by the Bessemer and open-hearth processes, is now one of the most important industries of the United States. It is necessary that iron intended for this purpose should be very pure, and especially must it be comparatively free from phosphorus. Great care must therefore he exercised in the selection of proper ores, flux, and fuel. Only such ores as are practically free from phosphorus can be used, and pure fuel is as much a necessity as pure ores; though hitherto iron men have paid comparatively little attention to this point. During the course of my work as chemist for the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, I had occasion to examine some of the bituminous coals of the State for phosphorus, and the results obtained are so interesting that I venture to present them to the notice of the members of the Institute. The coals are arranged in geological order according to the different beds, and the table shows the percentage of phosphorus in the coal and also in the coke. The greatest number of specimens have been selected from the Pittsburgh bed, because it is the principal coal-bed of Southwestern Pennsylvania, and most of the mineral fuel which is mined along the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers, to be used in the coke ovens of the Connellsville region and in the blast furnaces and mills of Pittsburgh and its vicinity, and to be shipped to Western and Southern markets, comes from this bed. INTRODUCTION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is a relatively low-cost instrument developed by Hawkes and Bailey (1973) and was originally intended to monitor stress changes in mine pillars subjected to uniaxial stress changes. In this regard, this instrument has found considerable use by the mining industry. More recently, there have been attempts to use the stressmeter for determination of more general changes of the in situ rock stress. This paper reports on a study to characterize the performance of the rigid inclusion stressmeter for this application and presents results on the effect of anisotropic stress changes. These stress changes must be accounted for to properly analyze general changes of the in situ rock stress. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is an instrument designed to measure variations of the in situ stress around a borehole. The stressmeter studied in this work, is manufactured by Irad Gage, Div. Creare Products, Inc. Lebanon, New Hampshire. It consists of a stiff hollow steel gage body that is preloaded across a borehole diameter. The preloading is activated by sliding a wedge between an upper platen and the gage body. Arthur G. Metcalfe (SOLAR)—Three explanations to account for mechanical nucleation effects are considered in the paper, viz., theories based on fragmentation, agglomeration, and pressure-wave mechanisms. The authors show that none of these mechanisms will explain the results observed with tin and Sn-Pb alloys. A fourth mechanism of nucleation enhancement was developed during work at Armour Research Foundation on casting of beryllium and, although presented briefly on various occasions, the theory has never been discussed adequately. It is believed that this theory will explain many of the observations. Classical homogeneous nucleation theories assume that embryo nuclei are formed in the melt as a result of compositional and/or thermal fluctuations. Stable nuclei are formed when a critical size is reached such that the decrease in free energy for conversion of this volume of melt to solid offsets the increase of surface, energy. The assumption is made that the average properties of liquid and solid metal can be used. In practice this assumption is invalid and indeed is contrary to the postulation of thermal and compositional fluctuations in the melt. Actually the conditions favoring embryo formation bring the seeds of its own destruction—the thermal and compositional fluctuations leave the embryo surrounded by atoms of higher thermal energies and/or by solute atoms that depress the melting point. There was once a speculative period of interest in small mining companies that is commonly referred to as "the uranium boom of the 50's." In the late 60's, there was a second mining stock boom: it centered around uranium and silver, when silver had reached a new high of $3.60. In the mid 1970Js, there may be a new boom in the making, and it appears that substantial public and institutional interest in mining equities will finally result in a viable long-term capital market rather than the boom-or-bust pattern of the 50's and 60's. The reason for Wall Street's renewed interest in mining is understandable: most mineral commodities have recently gone up in price. Domestically, these price increases have come in the wake of the inflationary spiral unleashed by years of unbridled government deficit spending and erratic fiscal and monetary policies. Internationally, of course, the biggest push for higher prices has come from third-world countries whose primary income derives from indigenous natural resources. Many of these countries-whose fiscal and monetary policies haven't been models of excellence either-have attempted to cope with the worldwide economic mess by forming cartels that could control the price of commodities. What's happened to petroleum is well-known; what's happened to copper, bauxite, phosphate, and uranium is part and parcel of the same syndrome.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. Coal can be liquefied and gasified by several methods, all of which are being investigated and evaluated because each has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of capital costs, end-products, and extent of required gas clean-up. Since coal conversion requires coal preheating to some extent, all these schemes begin with a coal-preparation step in a pressurized and heated reactor vessel where, in most cases, some additive or catalyst is usually injected. Extracting hydrogenated fuels from coal is not really a new science. Many people still recall the old "coal oil" that fired the lamps of stoves of rural America until the 1920's; the coal oil was produced by a basic Fischer- Tropsch method which has since been further developed to synthesize liquid fuels in the form of 86 to 90-octane gasoline and diesel fuel.

The isothermal section of the Mo-Ti-Zr-0 system at 1500°C was investigated using X- ray diffraction and mefallographic techniques. Up to 66.7 at. pct 0, the system contains ten four -phase regions. Isopleths at 10, 30, 45, 55, and 60 at. pct 0 were constructed. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the general shape of the quaternary equilibrium phase diagram of molybdenum, titanium, zirconium, and oxygen at 1500°C. The system was truncated at 66.7 at. pct o. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS The Ti-Zr-0 system was investigated in this laboratory.' The binary systems of interest have been compiled and discussed by Hansen' and Levin, McMurdie, and Hall.3 Farrar, Stone, and Margolin studied the titanium-rich corner of the Ti-Mo-0 ternary. The Trixie mine is located in the East Tintic Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

Human progress has a visible material phase, easily discernible, that is expressed in the standard of living. This material phase, however, is only the outward expression of a spiritual or mental phase that acts as a driving force in making humanity improve both its outlook and its mode of living. The instrument of progress is the human brain. Under the urge of spiritual drive, the brain acts as a focal point to utilize the forces of nature and put them to work for the benefit of mankind. Besides intelligence, which is an innate quality, the tools of the human brain are knowledge, experience, training, initiative, and skill. Given sufficient intelligence, the human brain can make an amazing amount of progress, provided it is supplied with an adequate spiritual and moral urge and a good technical background. It is the role of education to sup- ply such a background. The material phase of human progress proceeds on a series of parallel fronts, all of them interdependent to some extent (Fig. 7). The rise of the standard of living, dependent as it is upon the manufacture and mass distribution of goods, is based essentially upon the development and utilization of the material resources of a country or land area. This development involves the extraction of mineral and organic products from Mother Earth, their transportation to manufacturing centers, their transformation into finished goods and their dis-

Uncertain world conditions of the present time require that this country be prepared to meet: 1) all out nuclear war with attack on the U. S.; 2) limited wars; 3) political, economic, and/or pyschological warfare. Our present position as a major world power derives in large measure from our free institutions and great industrial productivity, and this productivity in turn depends on a continuing flow of raw materials-metals, minerals, fuels, and agricultural products. The U. S., with only about 6 pct of the world's population, uses from one to two thirds of the world's annual supplies of most metals and minerals. The U. S. strategic materials stockpiling program is designed to enhance our national security position: as stated in the preamble of the Stock Piling Act, to decrease and prevent wherever possible a dangerous and costly dependence upon foreign nations for supplies of strategic and critical materials in times of national emergency.

To open the Fisher Hill mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, it was necessary to sink an inclined shaft into the rock and excavate stations, drifts, and ore pockets. This inclined shaft, or slope, q ft. 8 in. high by 28 ft. 2 in. wide, has compartments for two 5-ft. gauge ore-skip tracks of 120-lb. rail, one 5-ft. gauge man-skip track of 60-lb. rail, a concrete stairway, and service pipes consisting of a 12-in. compressed-air line, an 8-in. pump-discharge line, and a 4-in. water-supply line. When we were requested to investigate the work, the progress being made (by another organization) amounted to only 2 ½ ft. advance in 24 hr. We reported that progress of at least 6 ft. per day could be made. As a result, the Defense Plant Corporation, through the Republic Steel [ ] Corporation, entered into a contract with us to sink the shaft. The contract contained a penalty and bonus clause predicated upon an advance of 150 ft. per month. The average advance was 7.8 ft. per day; that in the best six-day week was 60 ft. and that in the best month, 215.5 ft. in 25 working days. The drilling was performed by 3 ½ -in. wet drifter drills mounted on five 8-ft. columns (see accompanying illustration). Even though a full-face drilling and mucking operation is customarily desirable, the steep slope, with the accumulation of water and fine debris at the face, made a modified heading and bench operation preferable. The design of a longwall entry system is discussed in this Bureau of Mines paper. This is done primarily through the results of an in-mine case study made of two sets of longwall entries utilizing the stiff- yield pillar design concept. The rock mechanics instrumentation plan used in this case study is shown, including a description of the instrumentation layout and the types of instruments used. The analysis of the stress changes in the abutment and yield pillars is presented in detail as the longwall panels were mined. Conclusions concerning when the pillar first started to experience significant stress, pillar stress history as the longwall face approached and moved past the pillars, stress distribution within the pillars and relative stress changes between yield and abutment pillars are discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the redistribution of stress in the vicinity of the long- wall panel.

I HAVE the pleasure of exhibiting samples of the rock in which the South African diamonds are said to occur, for which I am in debted to Mr. Franz Groeger, of Vienna, formerly an assistant of the Royal Imperial Geological Institution, whose account of the general geology of Southern Africa was contained in a recent number of the proceedings of that Institution. The rock is apparently a sort of tufa, evidently of volcanic origin. Mr. Groeger assured me that it could be seen in situ, bounded by uplifted stratified rocks; and that diamonds had been mined from it, by means of shafts, some distance below the surface. Groeger calls it "greenstone-tufa," and says of it, in the proceedings of the Geological Institution, " it breaks through the younger members of Group III [lower Trias and Jura], . . .. and crops out in oval masses, filling fissures . . ..The occurrence of this tufa is not locally limited, but has been traced and proved already over a large territory." DR. HUNT remarked that the material looked like the trass of the Rhine region. He thought it a new occurrence for diamonds. He believed diamonds to belong to ancient crystalline rocks, although these materials might be brought tip by volcanic agency, and the diamonds remain unaltered. In the volcanic rocks of Auvergne, crystals of sapphire, zircon, and spinel are found; and yet no one supposes that these minerals have been generated by volcanic agency. He had had a conversation with Bertrand de Lom on this subject, who agreed with him that these minerals, being hard and resistant,

THE importance, to geologists and metallurgists, of knowing the mineralogical forms in which the silver occurs in ores has increased during the past few years, and will continue to increase as long as working hypotheses are converted into proved theories and rule of thumb methods are supplanted by scientific data. The methods used for the determination of these silver minerals have been: (1) careful study of polished ore sections with the microscope, and more recently, (2) metallurgical separation of the ground ore by flotation, tabling and panning, supplemented by microscopic examination of these separated minerals, and chemical analyses. During the course of some experimental work carried on by the testing department of the International Smelting Co. and myself, it becomes important to determine, in a general way, the distribution of the silver values in the minerals, as they exist in Tintic Standard and North Lilly siliceous oxidized lead-silver ores. These mines are in the East Tintic Mining District, State of Utah. In this work the second method was used. Differential flotation tests were run, separating the sulfide from the oxidized minerals, and the products were assayed. Various concentrates were carefully panned and the separated products assayed; special samples of ore were selected and assayed. The microscope was used only for the purpose of determining whether the individual minerals were in the so-called "free" state.

IN examination of some cold-rolled copper and cupronickel that contained a little columbium, it was discovered that these alloys were unusually resistant to annealing. This effect was sufficiently pronounced to warrant some investigation [ ] of the annealing characteristics of such compositions. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made from cathode copper, electrolytic nickel, and a special copper-columbium hardener alloy furnished by the Electro Metallurgical Corporation. This hardener alloy contained 10 per cent columbium, with tantalum, aluminum and iron as major impurities. The melting was carried out in a clay-graphite crucible in a high-frequency induction furnace, under a charcoal or [ ] electrode carbon cover. No deoxidizing additions were made. The 7-lb. copper heats were poured into a steel mold, hot-rolled to ¼ -in. thickness, and annealed for ½ hr. at 760°C.; the cupronickels were annealed I hr. at 815°C. The material was then cold-rolled to a go per cent reduction in thickness and annealing tests were carried out on this 1/8-in. hard-rolled strip. WROUGHT-IRON eye-bars for bridges and roofs, designed upon what is known as the pin connection system, have been successfully manufactured in this country for some years. The most approved methods employed have been the hydraulic upsetting process, and by die-forging under a hammer. In upset eyes the fibre of the iron is necessarily much distorted ; and in bars of considerable size, this disturbance seriously impairs the strength of the connection. Mr. Collingwood, in discussing my paper on "Proportions of the Heads of Eye-bars," read before the American Society of Civil Engineers, Jan. 21st, 1874, submitted sketches of certain bars intended for the anchorage of the East River bridge, which had been exposed to the action of sulphuric acid a sufficient length of time to thoroughly cleanse the surfaces, and expose the condition of the fibre. These sketches are here reproduced for the purpose of illustrating the effect of this methpd of manufacture. In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be observed that the fibres at A, and E, have been folded back upon themselves and otherwise twisted and disturbed, in a manner not calculated to inspire confidence in the integrity of the connection. To compensate for this defect, a large excess of metal is thrown into the eye; but a method of manufacture which involves such a necessity, even although it be the one giving the best results thus far, all things being considered, is far from being perfect.
