DURING the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was clone, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the alit was not known. In a mobile crushing unit system trucks are replaced by a conveyor, which results in a continuous, almost fully automated operation with all its attendant advantages. Because of new designs for large mobile crushing units that have been placed on the market, the use of these plants has increased significantly during the last three years. Gains in productivity and reductions in costs are vital to every mine operator, and the shovel-crusher-conveyor system is a powerful tool with which to achieve this goal. New Designs Increase Throughput While Reducing Size The basic concept of the shovel-crusher-conveyor scheme of operations is simple and sound, with the result that domestic operators are showing a growing interest in its application. A number of operators have been using small mobile crushing plants for several years, but large operators, in spite of considerable interest, have not been able to use this system because no mobile crusher capable of crushing 1000-2000 tph of rock loaded by a large shovel (6-12 cu yd) has been available. A suitable crusher must accept rock of the size handled by these large shovels, be simple in design, easily maneuverable, remotely controllable, and have price and maintenance costs not much higher than those for stationary crusher installations.

In a previous paper1 we published what we believed to be a correct stable equilibrium diagram for an iron-carbon alloy containing + 1.20 per cent. silicon. The purpose of the present paper is to record the results of studies concerning the effect of silicon on the location of the eutectoid points of both systems, including also certain incidental observations of general interest. We prepared white cast irons containing roughly 21/2 per cent. carbon, 0.05 per cent. manganese, and 0.03 per cent. each of phosphorus and sulfur, but of accurately known silicon contents which varied from 0.40 to 3.32 per cent. These were completely graphitized, and both A1 points determined, as in our previous work, the specimens being converted from the stable to the metastable condition and vice versa by appropriate heat treatments. Each stable alloy was heated to a few degrees above Arl for 3 to 7 hr., quenched and analyzed for total and graphitic carbon, the difference being the "combined" or, better, agraphitic2 carbon content of the saturated solid solution just above the eutectoid transformation. One specimen was lost through accident, and the 0.40-per cent. silicon material gave an anomalous result ascribed to difficulty in maintaining the stable system in the presence of but little silicon.

The furnace in which rimming steel is made has an important bearing on the quality of the steel produced. Furnace.—Particularly in the manufacture of low-carbon rimming steels, it is necessary to have an efficient, easily regulated furnace, because of the relatively high finishing temperature requirements. In recent years, the most important development in design of open-hearth furnaces has been the sealing and insulation of the greater part of the furnace to prevent air infiltration and loss of heat. Efficient, straight-line valves insure proper draft. Combustion controls guarantee correct gas-air ratios. Furnaces of all sizes ranging from 20 to 200 tons have been used successfully in the manufacture of rimming steels. Metal bath is varied from 20 to 40 in. in depth without appreciable variation in quality. Charging.—A normal open-hearth charge consists of pig iron (hot or cold), scrap of miscellaneous nature, and slag-making additions, such as limestone and burnt lime. Because of local conditions, some plants find it necessary to discard the use of pig iron and use some carbonaceolis substances with varying percentages of cast iron to replace the pig iron. It is questionable whether such practice will consistently produce the quality of rimming steel required for auto stampings and other severe drawing requirements. Pig Iron.—An open-hearth furnace under proper control should melt 150 tons of low-carbon rimming steel on about 35 to 38 per cent pig-iron charge basis. The total production of oil in Peru in 1940 was 12,127,135 bbl., or about 10 per cent less than in 1939. Most of the reduction can be attributed to the fact that the export market under war conditions is much restricted and naturally is more than ordinarily competitive. Development and Exploration in Older Areas As evidenced by Table I, almost all production continued to come from the three established fields in coastal northwestern Peru. Zorritos Field.—Exploration in this small field, which was purchased by the Peruvian Government in 1939, continued with that in near-by areas in the adjoining National Reserve. Several wells were drilled, regarding which details are not as yet available. It is estimated that the production rate for a total of some 45 old and 15 new wells approximated zoo bbl. per day, or about 3 bbl. per well per day. Lobitos Fields.—The Lobitos area produced 2,435,504 bbl.; about 10 per cent less than the amount for 1939. La Brea-Pari9zas.—This property of International Petroleum Co. continued to account for nearly 80 per cent of Peru's production. During the year, drilling was stepped up to 139 wells, as compared with 73 wells completed in the previous year; 123 were producers and aggregated a total of 287,867 ft. It has been said that the Pittsburgh bed is the most valuable single mineral deposit yet known to man. The figures in Table 1 are presented in substantiation of that claim. Production and Value In order that the figures of Table 1 may have any weight, a statement must be made to show how they were arrived at. Because, to the writer's knowledge, no accurate separate figures ever have been kept of the production and value of the Pittsburgh coal bed, the states will be considered separately. Pennsylvania Accurate figures are obtainable for Pennsylvania for recent years because recent reports of the Pellnsylvania Department of Mines show the production from each mine and the bed worked at each mine. For recent years, therefore, it is only necessary to list the mines working in the Pittsburgh bed and add up their production. The value was obtained by treating each county separately, applying the average price for the county to the production of Pittsburgh coal in that county. Diamond drilling through caving formations at depths greater than ZOO0 ft has long presented serious difficulty, generally solved either by casing or cementing. Casing is permitted only when the resulting smaller hole is acceptable, and cementing is frequently a problem at depth. A new method that injects cement under pressure at the desired location is an aid in diamond drilling deep holes. DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pump- ing process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. Preliminary separation of precious metals by flotation can offer a simplification of the conventional method of treatment of anode slimes. Laboratory flotation experiments show that rich gold and silver concentrate can be obtained with excellent recoveries. THE purpose of this paper is to present the results of an investigation into the possibilities of separating precious metals from anode slimes by selective flotation. The work was carried out at the State Research Institute in Helsinki, Finland. The sample of anode slimes tested was submitted by the Outo-kumpu Co. in Finland. In 1947 the average assay of filtered and dried anode slimes in the Outokumpu refinery in Pori was as follows: Au, 0.50 pct; Ag, 9.38 pct; Cu, 11.02 pct; Ni, 45.21 pct; Pb, 2.62 pct; Fe, 0.60 pct; Sn, 1.00 pct; Sb, 0.04 pct; As, 0.70 pct; Se, 4.33 pct; S, 2.32 pct; SO,, 2.17 pct; SiO2, 2.25 pct. The daily assay naturally varies considerably from the figures presented above. The present conventional method of treatment of anode slimes consists of the steps shown in the flowsheet in fig. 1. As seen from this simplified flowsheet, the present method of treatment involves many steps by which the components of the anode slimes are removed one after another until the main products, gold and silver, may be separated. THE object of this article is to point out the experimental relationship which exists among contact angle, adsorption density, zeta potential, and flotation rate data. In each of the experiments discussed in this article, the surface properties of quartz, as a function of pH, were measured in solutions to which constant quantities of dodecylam-monium acetate were added. Morrow1 and deBruyn2 worked with solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles per liter, whereas Fuerstenau3 and Seele worked with solutions containing exactly 4x105 moles per liter, but this difference is not significant. The pH of the solutions was regulated with HCI or NaOH in all cases. In each case, the addition of collector was constant, but the concentration of dodecylammonium ions decreased because of the formation of dodecylamine at higher pH values.2 Contact Angles: Gaudin and Morrow1 presented data for the contact angle of quartz in solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter between pH 2 and pH 10.15. Using the same captive bubble techniques, the writer measured contact angles on quartz in solutions containing 4x105 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter at pH values ranging from 9.9 to 13.2. The Tigre Mining Co. of Mexico, owned by the Lucky Tiger Combination Gold Mining Co. of Kansas City, decided early in 1910 to enlarge its mill, which consisted of a concentrator milling 3,000 tons of ore per month. The enlarged plant was designed to crush and concentrate 6,000 of ore and to cyanide 7,500 tons per month. The extra tonnage cyanided was to be obtained from tailings which were stored below the old mill. Power was supplied to the old mill from four boilers; a 150-h-p. Corliss engine and two Weber 60-h-p. gas-engines using producer-gas made from charcoal. The total horse-power required, including 60 h-p. used for machine-drills in the mine, was approximately 275. Cord-wood cost $4.32 per cord, 8 by 4 by 3 ft., and charcoal $15 per ton. The fuel supply in the surrounding country was approaching exhaustion; more than 150 mules and 50 men were engaged in cutting and transporting this fuel, and the unsettled political conditions in Sonora were such that it would be practically impossible to keep an organization of this kind together. The price of fuel was steadily rising and at times it became almost impossible to get sufficient fuel to operate. It was estimated that the enlarged plant, together with the mine, would require 750 h-p., as follows: Horse-Power. The coal-measures of George's Creek coal-region, in Maryland, lie in a comparatively flat synclinal basin, about 4 miles wide. The dip of the measures is, in places near the edge of the basin, as much as 20 feet in 100. The Pittsburgh seam, known locally as the " Big Vein," is the only seam worked at the present time. Ocean No. 3, one of the large mines of the Consolidation Coal Company, has its opening on the outcrop of the Pittsburgh seam, in a ravine which cuts into this seam to such an extent as to bring this opening to within a mile of the axis of the basin. After working all the coal to the rise of this point, the mine was further developed by extending a slope down the dip of the seam, making such an angle with the line of greatest dip as to give a grade varying from 1 to 10 per cent., down which the empty cars carry a rope from a single-drum winding-engine. The coal was worked from each side of this slope in successive Iifts during its progress. From the top of the slope, for a distance of 4000 feet to the fourth lift, the " make " of water is drained by gravity through a heading into the adjoining mine. Below this point the water was pumped into this same heading, at the fourth lift, from which point, as before mentioned, it flowed by gravity.

In deposits in which the secondary zones are well defined a layer of rich oxidized ore is frequently found immediately to overlie the enriched sulphides, from which it is derived by direct oxidation in place. In deposits that contain oxidizing precipitants particles and masses of residual oxidized ore are likely to be scattered through the leached zone, having been precipitated during migration before reaching the zone of enrichment. This precipitation hinders secondary enrichment and in extreme cases prevents the formation of such concentrations. Residual ores are precipitated by various reagents. Carbonates are formed through the action of the carbonic acid contained in surface waters, and also directly through the replacement of calcite, especially where the containing rock is limestone. Native metals, such as copper, gold, and silver, are formed by the action of reducing agents, among which organic matter and ferrous sulphate are prominent. Kaolin, gouge, and certain shales occasionally act as powerful precipitants through adsorption. Silver is often found as residual chloride, formed through precipitation by the chlorine contained in surface waters. Residual ores are often the result of incomplete solution, the relatively insoluble minerals being left behind during the migration of associated metals; incomplete oxidation and solution often leave residual masses of unaltered, or partly altered, sulphides in the oxidized zone. Such residual particles or masses have commonly been enriched by additions from circulating, metal-bearing solutions. Numerical modeling of ground water flow systems can be used to help analyze many practical problems encountered in the mining industry. Numerical models can be used to predict ground-water seepage rates into surface mines, shafts, and other large excavations; to predict water-level changes under adjacent properties; and to predict the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering schemes. As with any model, the results from a numerical model are limited by the quality and quantity of data, and by the restrictions of any simplifying assumptions. A case study is presented that shows how a numerical model was used for engineering purposes to help analyze the hydrologic impact of a proposed open-pit mine by Predicting changes in the dewatering rate caused by the lateral growth and deepening of the mine and by predicting the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering schemes.

BACKOFEN' reported recently that "the deformation texture of cold-drawn OFHC copper wire, after a reduction in area of 97.3 pct, may still be described as a composite of [lll.] and [loo] directions aligned parallel to the wire axis." In the introduction, he indicated that this was in contrast to the work of Hibbard,' who reported a single [111] texture after a reduction of 96.4 pct. Unfortunately Backofen stated that this was a reduction in area when actually it was a reduction in diameter, as is clearly stated in the reference. Moreover, the results of Backofen are in complete agreement with the results of Hibbard. Backofen's 97.3 pct reduction in area is an 83.3 pct reduction in diameter, after which he foundadouble [ll11 and[l001texture with the former predominating. Similarly, Hibbard; after an 86 pct reduction in diameter found a double [Ill] and [I001 texture with the former predom- inating. Hibbard, however, when he drew the wire further to 96.4 pct reduction in diameter, found primarily a single [Ill1 texture as illustrated by Fig. 2 of ref. 3. Here also, Hibbard- reported evidences of the [loo] recrystallization texture found by Backofen. It might also be pointed out that Backofen not only drew his wire 97.3 pct reduction in area but also etched them over 99 pct reduction in area from 0.125 to 0.01 in. diam. Hibbard's wires were drawn directly to size. In summary, the deformation texture of cold-drawn copper wire still may be described as primarily a single Clll] texture after a sufficient amount of drawing, such as 96.4 pct reduction in diameter." a

TEMPERATURE considerations are of prime importance in the manufacture of steel products-front the time the metal is produced in the melting furnace, where the chemical reactions have a direct dependence on the temperatures of the bath, to the final machining of work on which the expansion due to the rise in temperature of the forgings during machining must be allowed for. Methods employed and difficulties encountered in some of the more important steps are here outlined. These methods are the result of years of experience, with many methods of temperature determination, and have been successful in routine works practice in the manufacture of high-quality steels. In the operations of melting, forging, and heat treatment, if the product is to be of the best quality each operation must be carefully followed through. A high-quality product cannot be obtained even with the best heat treatment if the steel is poorly melted, and, conversely, the best steel ever made may he spoiled by inefficient heat treatment. To perform the best work in any of these operations, temperatures must be accurately regulated.

At Kidd Creek, the annual production of 4.5 million tonnes of ore has been achieved primarily with sublevel blasthole stoping. This mining method has allowed underground operations to meet the designed production capacity while maintaining an outstanding safety record. To achieve this goal, rock mechanics principles have been integrated into each facet of mining in the planning stage, in the production stage, and in various stages of ground support. This paper evaluates the two adopted mining sequences based on ground stress patterns, blasting control, ground reinforcement, backfill support, and numerical modelling for stope stability at the mines.

Locality and Geological Occurrence.—The Atpine region of Southwest. Colorado. cort~prieiog the San Juan and Uncon~paghre Mountains, is con~posed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic schiets, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, arid Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this directiou, the Uocampaglire receives from the east the Red Casm Creek. Following up the narrow canon we find the section through white. sandotone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-like character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, ad we have entered crysralline rock—porphyry. The densities of liquid tin, lead, and Sn-Pb alloys have been measured over a range of temperature above the liquidus. In all cases, data can be adequately represented by an equation of the type p = a + bT. For pure tin, the values of a and b are, respectively, 7.139 and 7.125 x 10-4, and for pure lead, 11.060 and 12.220 x 10-4. At constant temperature, molar volumes in the Sn-Pb system vary linearly with composition. DURING the course of a long-term program at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada, the densities of liquid tin, lead, and Pb-Sn alloys were studied. The work reported herein draws on two sets of results independently achieved by Thresh, on the one hand, and by Crawley and White, on the other. EXPERIMENT The method and apparatus were originated by Thresh and have been described in detail in Mines Branch reports.172 In operation, the 14 cu cm graphite pycnometer is put in the furnace as shown in Fig. 1 after a machined charge has been placed inside the pycnometer and the lid screwed down. The dimensions of the charge are such that, upon melting, a small excess of liquid metal is discharged through the capillary hole to displace the weighted float above. The concept of using simulators to train operators of vehicles is not new. However, the Bureau of Mines initiated these programs to determine if computer controlled training devices would enhance production and improve safety in the coal mining industry. Two prototype devices have been constructed, tested and are currently operational. The continuous miner and dragline operator training systems both incorporate full scale operator stations using operational controls and displays. The operator interacts with the visual system through the cab controls to perform basic tasks and develop skills required for startup, operation and shutdown of the mining equipment. Data pertaining to the concepts and techniques applied during the design, development and evaluation of the training devices are presented. Descriptions of trainer designs and visual systems for training equipment are presented and the results of the system evaluation are summarized.
