The specifications for bridge-steel are usually not severe. The main difficulty is to secure a material which will roll easily, without showing signs of cracking on the corners of the blooms or on the flanges of the beams. In many mills sulphur has been deemed the most harmful constituent in this respect. It has been thought hazardous.to roll steel containing over 0.07 per cent. of sulphur. Yet, in making steel for the Phoenix Iron Company, I have produced from stock running as high as 0.13 per cent. of sulphur a material which rolled very satisfactorily. It is reasonable to infer that the injurious effect of sulphur can be neutralized, to a great extent, by proper treatment in the open-hearth furnace; and the following notes from my usual practice here may be of interest to those obliged to use high-sulphur stock. The steel made at Phoenixville in the 20-ton furnaces has about the following composition : Per cent. Carbon,...0.15 to 0.20 Manganese,.........0.50 to 0.60 Sulphur,..........0.11 to 0.13 Phosphorus,.: .0.04 to 0.06 Silicon,.......... 0.01 to 0.02 The best running heats were made with a small amount of pigiron. In using large proportions of pig the quantity of ore is also increased. This not only cuts the bottom, but also lengthens the time required to bring the charge down. Up to 50 per cent. of pig may be used, but 25 per cent. is much better. A 40,000-pound charge, containing 10,000 pounds of pig and 30,000 pounds of Bessemer butts or beam-scrap, works very well.

The paragraphs quoted, regarding Mr. Hoover's appointment as chairman of the newly organized food board of the United States, are taken from the editorial page, of the New York Times for April 13: ?The country is fortunate in commanding the services of Herbert C. Hoover as Chairman of the newly established Food Board. This is n, problem of first importance. Few realize the extent to which American food stuffs will enter into the decision of the war, and it is doubtful if it has occurred to many minds as yet that we shall have to deny ourselves what we have regarded as necessaries in order to keep our European allies supplied. " Mr. Hoover is one of the leading mining engineers of the country. At the outbreak of the war he put his private affairs aside to become the head of the American Commission for Relief in Belgium. He has had an experience that perhaps no other man has ever had, covering the raising of money and the purchase and distribution of supplies on a large scale; He has been brought into close relations with the neutrals and the belligerents on both sides. By them all he is recognized is one of the best executives brought to the fore by the mar. Mr. Hoover is in a position now to place abilities and experience at the service of his country. He will come back with comparative data that will enable him to measure resources and deficiencies accurately. This appointment gives renewed assurance of our Government's grasp of the problems of war and its resolve to apply, business principles to their solution."

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America over the past twenty years are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. As early as WW II the rich Mesabi hematites were depleted, ending a 50-year era of direct shipping ores that included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines and processes were being developed to use domestic low-grade iron deposits. This resulted in the rapid development of iron ore beneficiation processes and signaled the coming trend toward concentration, sintering and pelletizing. Yet even today when agglomeration facilities are treating 90 % of the Mesabi Range product much remains to be done in keeping world-wide competitive forces in check and in ensuring the long- term utilization of these expansive ore supplies in an up-until-now captive U.S. market.

SIX different samples of anthracite, each a firm compact lump, were finely pulverized and immediately put in bottles. Portions of these were weighed and placed upon an ordinary water-bath and dried for one hour; the average loss was 1.24. The same portions were then placed in a hot-air oven, and for two hours kept at a temperature of 285' F., and, after cooling in a dry chamber, were again weighed, when there was found a further average loss of 1.22, making a total so far of 2.46. They were then immediately returned to the oven and for two hours more kept at a temperature of 530' F. and cooled and weighed again, when no further loss was found, but an average gain of .55 upon the previous weighing. The same portions were a third time placed in the oven and for about ten minutes kept at the last-mentioned temperature, and then, while still hot, were poured into one-quarter inch glass tubes, each with a bulb at one end, and heated over a Bunsen burner at a temperature below a red heat, when more water vaporized and condensed in small clear globules on the cold parts of the tubes. Fresh portions of the coals were then taken, and the total amount of water determined, and the average was found to be 3.04, or 1.80 more than was found at the temperature of the water-bath, which was perhaps a little below 212' F., and .58 more than at 285' F. In 1974, iron pellet production in the Great Lakes region reached the 53-million-tpy level, accounting for more than 88% of the nation's pellet production. By 1978, pellet output from the Great Lakes district will climb to at least 78 million tpy. To achieve this 50% increase in output, the US iron and steel industry is investing at least $1.25 billion in new mines and pelletizing plants, mostly in Minnesota and Michigan. The biggest effort is concentrated in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota, the heart of the US steel industry's major iron ore source: here, plans for two new taconite plants-one by Hibbing Taconite Co., and the other by Inland Steel Mining Co.-and three major expansions of existing facilities are already under way to boost Minnesota's total iron pellet capacity from the current 41.2 million tpy to 65 million tpy by 1978. The facilities being expanded are those of US Steel Corp. (Minntac operations), Eveleth Taconite Co., and National Steel Pellet Co.

AT the last meeting of the Institute, a discussion arose upon the question, " Is them pressure in coke ovens ?" and many of the members seemed to think that the superiority of the Belgian furnace might be due to the fact that it is a completely closed chamber, in which the gases given off by the coal are, or may be, at more than the atmospheric pressure. It seems to me that this position is untenable, and that an examination of one of these ovens in operation will show, not only that there is no excess of pressure in the coke chamber, but that the contrary is true, and a partial vacuum exists. The Belgian or François oven consists of a rectangular chamber closed at the ends by sliding doors, and furnished with flues in the side walls and floor. The new charge is introduced at a time when the furnace is so hot as to cause immediate and copious discharge of the volatile constituents of the coal. The gases pass downwards through the side flues giving out their heat to the walls and thus to the coal. Underneath the floor air is introduced and the gases burn, producing intense heat. Heat is also reflected from the arched roof upon the coal which is therefore heated from all sides. The especial advantage which this construction was designed to secure is that no air is admitted to the coke-chamber. All the heat is produced by the combustion of the uncokeable gases, and the yield ought to be a maximum. It is so in fact, allowing for the imperfections inseparable from furnace construction and management. Sometimes the yield is in excess of the percentage indicated by assay, showing that

The lead deposits of Missouri may be divided into three districts, the southwest, middle, and southeast. As too much time would be required to devote a detailed account to each district, only a description of the modes of occurrence of the lead ores in the southeast district will be given. The lead mining region proper of Southeast Missouri is embraced in an area of about twenty-five miles in width by about one hundred in length. The country embraced in this district is very broken, and traversed by ridges from one hundred to three hundred feet; in height, with an occasional knob rising higher. Porphyry forms almost the entire substructure of the region, with here and there outcrops of granite. The crystalline rocks were eroded into ridges and valleys before the deposition of the limestone took place. These porphyries are older than the Silurian limestones, and " belong (according to Pumpelly) to the Archaean (Azoic) formation, of which they may be the youngest member in Missouri. They are the near equivalents, in point of age, to the great iron-bearing rocks of Lake Superior, New Jersey, and Sweden."

The selection of a shaft size for ventilation purposes is a classic problem of concern to mining engineers. This presentation is concerned with the sizing of conventionally-sunk circular shafts with concrete or shotcrete linings. Costs of sinking shafts of three different depths, from 150 m to 300 m (500 ft to l000ft), and six different diameters, from 4.27 m to 7.32 m (14 ft to 24 ft), were obtained through questionnaires to shaft contractors. The primary objective of the economic model presented is the balancing of detailed annual capital and operating costs to achieve the minimum overall cost of the shaft installation over its life. The economic model is similar to previous analyses but treats several of the individual cost categories in an updated fashion. Included in the paper is a detailed analysis of the effects of varying power costs on optimal shaft size. Also included are a statistical analysis of current shaft costs and comments on the choice between shotcrete and concrete linings.

IT is well known that most of the materials entering into the manufacture of thermocouples are subject to variations in their thermoelectric characteristics, the chief causes of which are: differences in chemical composition; the previous .history, which includes mechanical working, ageing, oxidation, and contamination; and mode of use, such as depth of immersion, etc. In the case of a very extensively use thermoelement, the iron-constantan couple, neither iron nor constantan are absolutely uniform, and a number of checks are made during the process of manufacture. As both are subject to diversion from a standard value, neither, can be used for checking the other. It is, therefore, necessary to find a third metal against, which iron and constantan maybe checked. It was to find such a metal; that the present investigation was undertaken. To be a reliable, checking standard, the metal must possess a fairly high melting point? it must be obtainable in sufficient purity, and it must be uniform and constant with respect to its thermoelectric qualities. The choice is, as a result, limited to a few metals, such as copper, gold, and silver. Copper has the advantage of low cost, which makes it possible to use each wire only once and thus avoid any variations due to continued use, although previous investigators have found1 that continued use does not affect the calibration of a copper-constantan thermocouple. Copper also has the advantage of a large thermal electromotive force against constantan and would be desirable as a checking standard if it could be shown that it possessed the proper thermoelectric characteristics. The investigation, accordingly, resolved itself into three phases: the uniformity of commercial electrolytic copper, the effect of aging and method of annealing, and the calibration of the copper-constantan thermocouple.

ThE basic equations describing continuous zone-melting via the zone-void method were reported by Pfann. Using these equations, a theoretical study was undertaken in this laboratory on the effect of the variation of the significant parameters of the zone-void system. These parameters are the zone length, 1, the heater length, h, and the effective distribution coefficient, k. The object of this study was to determine the effect of these parameters on and (where a = Cp/Cf and ß = Cw/Cf, Cp, C,, and Cf being, respectively, the solute concentration in product, waste, and feed) so that, in future application of this technique to the ultrapurification of materials, the effect of 1 and h would be predictable regardless of the value of k. The basic assumptions made by pfannl were, for the purposes of this study, assumed to hold. For k < 1, the steady-state solute distribution in the stripping section and the shift in this distribution brought about by passage of a void is shown in Fig. 7 of Ref. 1. In this section the definition of k and ß precludes the possibility of ß assuming values less than unity when k < 1. In the course of this investigation it was found that computations based on Pfann&apos;s equations gave values of ß less than unity in the region 1 > k > l/h for almost all values of Ls, where Further computations showed that 6 assumes negative values when k > 1 for many values of L,, 1, and h. THE Institute of Metals Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a Research Committee in 1925 to de-termine what could be done by the Division to promote research work in the United States on non-ferrous metals. It was recognized that a considerable volume of use-ful research work in this field was being carried on by individual industrial companies as well as by the uni-versities and other research institutions, such as the Bureau of Standards. One need only refer to the recent research literature on non-ferrous metals in the TRANS-ACTIONS of the A.I.M.E., and elsewhere, to be con-vinced of healthful research activity in this field. The appointment of the Committee, however, voiced the impression that what was being done was, however excellent, inadequate for the needs of the industry. It was felt that the Division could usefully devote some of its time and effort in stimulating activity in this field. The deliberations of the Research Committee have not failed to develop wide differences of opinion even on the simple questions: (1) whether the Division can aid in any practical manner in this cause and (2) what the features of such aid might be. However, it was clear that there was only one type of research activity with which it could be very usefully concerned, viz., that on subjects of fundamental interest and general application. It was obvious that research work having special objects and more immediate commercial appli-cation should best be left to the industry itself.

Studies of the possible effect of plant water chemistry on the strength of unfired iron ore pellets apparently have not been reported in the literature. Naturally occurring soluble salts were removed from magnetic concentrate filter cakes obtained from several iron ore concentrators. Laboratory balling tests showed that unfired pellets made from these "clean" filter cakes were 50-100% stronger than the usual unfired pellets containing the salts. The fact that certain chemical additives dissolved in the water used for balling "clean" concentrates decreased the strength of unfired pellets indicates that salts in the plant process water may be responsible for lower strengths. According to chemical analyses of plant process waters at these plants, calcium and magnesium are probably the most detrimental salts in the plant circuits. It is suggested that calcium, magnesium, and other polyvalent cations in the mill process waters ion-exchange for lower-valence cations in the bentonite and thereby destroy the electrostatic-charge bonding in the green pellet. Some practical guidelines are also included for plant balling practices.

EXTRACTION techniques are of particular importance in determining size, shape an: crystal structure of particles smaller than l000Å in steels and other alloys. However, artifacts that can arise during the preparation of extraction replicas may lead to erroneous conclusions. The purpose of this note is to illustrate some of these artifacts and the misinformation that can result from their presence. An alloy of iron with 0.8 pct Cu was investigated in the following conditions: 1) Solution treated 3 days at 925°C in dry hydrogen and quenched in water. Aged in steps to precipitate copper, as follows: heated to 700°C, held 1 day; then furnace cooled to 50O°C, held 3 days; then furnace cooled to room temperature. 2) Solution treated 3 days at 925OC in dry hydrogen and furnace cooled to room temperature. 3) Solution treated 3 days at 925OC or 17 hr at 1100°C in dry hydrogen to dissolve all copper, then quenched in water. A normal parlodion dry-extraction technique was employed after etching the specimens with super picralP or with 2 pct nital. A wet-extraction method

JAY A. CARPENTER, Tonopah, Nev: (communication to the Secretary*).-This description of the Santa Gertrudis mill is of great interest to the operators of similar silver mills in Nevada. At the San Francisco meeting last September there were two excellent papers presented on Nevada silver mills; one by A. H. Jones on The Tonopah Plant of the Belmont Milling Co., and the other by E. E. Carpenter on Cyaniding Practice of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev. At the same meeting, I presented a paper on-Slime Agitation and Solution Replacement Methods at the West End Mill, Tonopah, Nev., covering this .particular feature of our milling practice. A comparison of the data presented in these four papers is interesting in that, while the general design and practice is much the same in all cases, there is a wide difference in the design and practice in the various departments of &apos;the mills. It is to be regretted that Mr. Rose did not round out. this excellent article by following Mr. Jones&apos;s and Mr. Carpenter&apos;s&apos; lead in giving the average gold and silver content of the ore milled and the resulting tailing, with the consumption of chemicals and the? cost of milling. The practice of the Santa Gertrudis mill in the use of ?cyanide and zinc offers an interesting comparison with that of the Nevada mills, and a discussion of this point may bring out the reasons for the differences that exist.

A simulation model has been developed to find out the possibility of improving the industrial closed-circuit wet grinding operations. The model involves a continuous tumbling mill in combination with a hydrocyclone to recycle the oversize material back to the mill. The mill is described by the breakage, i.e. the selection and the distribution, functions, co-ordinated with the diffusional mixing along the axis. The cyclone classifier is characterized by the partition function with allowance for the non-selective separation of part of the feed material into the underflow. The computer program developed incorporates an interactive capability to modify the operating conditions of the system whenever needed. The results are analysed for the operational conditions characterizing the mill and the classifier. Besides the steady state conditions some observations are also made about the dynamic responses of the closed circuit grinding system.

The subject article appears in the February, 1978, edition of Mining Engineering, and on page 190 carries the statement, "As most operators know, in a Water-Only cyclone, ability to adjust the vortex finder is quite important due to the sensitivity of this type of operations to variance in feed conditions and having to take them apart to make this adjustment is always a nuisance." Our experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Water Only cyclones does not agree with the above statement, and we offer the following brief discussion. Our company finds that the sensitivity of the Water-Only cyclone is a function of the fineness of the coal being washed, with the sensitivity to vortex finder length being greatest for coals coarser than 3/4-in. and virtually insensitive to raw coal finer than 1 mm. For coals finer than 1 mm, we find that we can use the shortest standard vortex finder in either our 10- or 15- in. Water Only cyclone without exception. For coals 5/8-in. x 1 mm ceramic vortex finders of fixed length have been satisfactory in all cases following an initial testing period in which the length was determined. Coals coarser that 5/8-in. are more sensitive to the vortex finder length, and two installations handling coals coarser than 1-in. continued to experiment with vortex finders of various lengths long after the initial startup period. For coals of all sizes, final adjustment of product quality has been achieved by determining the optimum size of apex orifice, which is accessible and readily changed, if necessary. Comments above assume no unusual change in the coal being washed or the required quality of clean coal.

I TOLD you above that you should save the melted material that you extracted by smelting the ore. In substance this is copper, lead, silver, and perhaps gold, but all are like substances mixed in one body without any distinction. Now if you wish to separate these and to reduce them to their pure qualities, it is necessary to proceed with each one according to its own methods. Now in this method of separating lead in order to extract the silver and gold from the copper, it is necessary to return to the smelting and to follow one of two methods.* The first is to smelt it again with the addition of lead or lead ore, and to make it all run through the channel into the large forehearth that was made in front of the blast furnace, and, as it cools off, proceed to remove layer by layer with the fork, as I told you before and as you did the first time, until the work lead is reached. Then you assay what you have extracted and see whether it contains silver. If you consider that it has enough per hundred to justify the expense, return it again to the smelting. Continue to do this until you have extracted all the unctuousness and the work lead still remains. If it contains little or no silver, you must be satisfied with your work; otherwise return it again to smelt, always accompanying it with lead or galena and do as you did the other times until it

Asbestos fiber, before it can be used commercially, is separated from the rock in which it is naturally found. Johns-Manville Corp. is currently constructing a 12-story fiber mill, of which the first half is completed and in operation. The mill will be the largest in the world, producing about 30 pct of the world&apos;s fiber. It was engineered and constructed by a cooperative effort of the engineers of the Canadian Johns-Manville Fibre Div. and the general plant engineering dept. Detailed design work on all phases of the job was done by Surveyer, Ninniger & Chenevert of Montreal. A series of crushing, screening, air aspirating and air separating processes will separate the fiber from 10 tons of rock per min. But to process this amount of ore about 90 tons of air per min will be handled in the aspirating and dust-collecting systems. To express this in more common units, 2.5 million cfm of air will be required. All this air will pass through a bag-type continuous automatic filter and will be expelled to atmosphere in summer or returned to the mill for heating during the winter months.

Forty-five years have passed since I discovered the extensive and remarkable diatom-earth beds at Monterey, California., and now I have the satisfaction of bringing to notice still another wonderful deposit in the heart of Arizona. The Monterey beds mere described at the Philadelphia Academy,* and specimens were sent to Prof. J. W. Bailey, West Point, N. Y., at that time the leading American authority upon such microscopic relics of organic life. The earth from both localities is snow-white and pulverulent. It rubs off&apos; like soft chalk upon the fingers when handled, and has the general appearance of chalk. But, unlike the Monterey beds, these newly-discovered deposits consist largely of volcanic ash, through which the siliceous shells of the diatoms are distributed. These deposits are in the central portion of the San Pedro valley,† in the southeastern corner of Pinal county. The region of their greatest development is a few miles south of the mining town of Mammoth, on the east bank of the stream, and near Redington, some 40 m. N. of Benson, on the Southern Pacific railway. The altitude is about 2600 ft. above tide. This portion of the San Pedro valley lies between the high Catalina and Rincon ranges on the west and the Galiuro mts. on the east.
