To move 7 million tons annually from their new inland coal mines at Camp Breckenridge, Ky., TVA selected a transportation package proposed by American Commercial Barge Line. The land portion includes two cable-driven conveyors covering 12.7 miles; a 260,000-ton storage area on a man-made island with a stacking-reclaiming bucket wheel; and a barge-loading system of 5500-tph capacity. The 183mile river portion will utilize three unit-tows with towboats and barges specially designed to carry the maximum tonnage allowed by locks and channel depth. The system has two noteworthy features. The first is a single-flight cable belt conveyor over nine miles long. The other is a high capacity twin belt conveyor using the principal of two separate belts supported in 60° troughing idlers. This conveyor exhibits a high carrying capacity combined with accurate tracking and lack of spillage. A description is given of the mechanical problems and solutions to the design, construction, and operation of the conveyor system which provides the link between the coal mine and the barge loading dock.

Coal mine bumps are a serious hazard to life and property in the mines of east-central Utah. Research into geologic factors associated with these bumps indicates that the bumps are spatially and genetically related to structural and stratigraphic features. Some bumps are directly related to stress accumulation along faults, either from natural causes or as a result of mining. Frictional properties of bedding planes between coal and roof rock, and between some rock units within the roof, directly affect the deformation of coal ribs, and hence the incidence of bumps. These frictional properties are related to the lithology of the roof rocks as well as to the sedimentary structures within the rocks. Commonly a sequence consisting of 1/3 ft of carbonaceous silt-stone, about 2/3 ft of rider coal, and several ft of massive siltstone or sandstone overlies the main seam. The sequence causes difficult roof conditions in the mines, difficult mining conditions and, directly or indirectly, many bumps. The U. S. Any type of agitation within a confined vessel is primarily concerned with two parameters: a level of agitation describing the homogeneity of the constituents (whether it be suspension or mixing), and the energy efficiency with which this level of agitation is accomplished. The following is an attempt to present a solution to the problem of adequately defining and optimizing these properties. A discussion is included of the application of good design practices to the determination of a mechanically efficient shape to the blade elements of the propeller. These practices, excluding several appropriate modifications, have been known, but not well understood, in aircraft fluid mechanics for a number of years. Having optimized the direct impartation of energy to the medium being agitated, attention is turned to one of the more perplexing phenomena of multi-phase systems - definition and prediction of agitation levels. The result of recent study and testing is a method of scaling that the authors believe provides a lucid understanding of governing physical parameters within the agitator itself, allowing one to scale up and down with confidence.

A MINERAL can best be defined as a phase,' where the term "phase" is described as a homogeneous,* physically distinct, and mechanically sep- arable portion of a system. If one phase develops from another, certain nuclei must first be available.2.394 The manner in which new material is added to these nuclei, and the subsequent structural and other characteristics of the phase, is often markedly influenced by factors other than its temperature, pressure, and gross compositional environment. Rates of growth, presence of impurities, the availability or lack of oxygen, the pH of the system, and percentage of completion of the often determine which modification will develop. Many transitional phases develop when a relatively insoluble precipitate is formed from solution. Different modifications are formed, depending on the speed and percentage of reacting solution added. Some of these "forms" are stable and do not "age" or transform into the so-called stable modifications. These modifications are difficult to treat in terms of equilibrium diagrams for the simple reason that these minerals do not represent an equilibrium situation described by only two (temperature and composition) or three terms (when pressure is considered). Many crystals exist as stable or meta- stable phases in nature in environments much different from those indicated by certain equilibrium diagrams. Laboratory experiments simulating in-situ copper recovery from primary sulfide ores in sulfuric acid systems pressurized with oxygen are reported. Copper extraction and acid consumption data are correlated with temperature in the range 50 to 150°C and quenched pH in the range 0.25 to 2. Adverse changes in the chemical composition of the leach solution and the formation of gangue-mineral alteration products and secondary sulfides can severely limit the extraction of copper above 90°C. Keeping the pH below the self-buffered value of about 2 and the temperature below about 110°C produces the maximum extraction rates. Forcing the pH too low not only results in excessively high acid consumption but may also limit the extraction of copper at temperatures above 100°C.

A technique for measuring the creep and rupture strength of nickel specimens bonded by sintered oxide layers has been developed for the investigation of the role of grain-boundary oxide in the oxidation strengthening of nickel during creep at 817 °C. Prom the inverse dependence of the rate of bonding on the thickness of the starting oxide, it is suggested that the rate of diffusion of Ni++ through NiO is the controlling process at the start of sintering. Cornparisons of the creep and rupture strength and of the microstructure of sintered couples with conventionul creep specimens suggest rupture in nickel is prevented by load-bearikzg, ikltergranular layers of oxide. A number of recent investigations have shown that at high temperature and low stress the creep-rupture strength of nickel and nickel-base alloys may be much greater in air than in an inert gas or vacuum.'-7 For example, at 817°C and 2500 psi, nickep failed in vacuum in 48 hr but not in air after 4000 hr, and a Ni-Cr-A1 alloy5 at 1038°C and 3000 psi failed in vacuum in 4 hr but not in air after 731 hr. DURING an electron microscope study of the w phase in zirconium-base alloys,1 a stereographic technique was devised which allows the synthesis of high energy electron diffraction patterns from a single crystal containing several variants of a second phase. The technique will be described using as an example the w phase which forms in a bcc matrix. The w phase was suggested by Silcock et al.2 and Bagaryatskii et al.3 to have a hexagonal structure with (0001)111(111)^, [001]B//[110]B* *The subscripts B and 1 are used to refer to the bcc phase and one particular orientation of the w phase, respectively. and with cell parameters aw = v2aB, where a^ is the lattice parameter of the bcc struc-ture. Since there are four <lll>B directions there should be four orientations of the w phase. In approaching this problem the question to be answered is, "What reciprocal lattice vectors from the B phase and the four w variants lie in the particular reciprocal lattice plane of interest?" One may restate the question in the form, "What plane normals from the B phase and the four w variants lie in the particular reciprocal lattice plane of interest?" The question is answered and the desired diffraction patterns are plotted using the following stereographic technique. Knowing the cw/aw ratio (=0.613 for the as-quenched form of the w phase), a stereographic projection of plane normals from one w variant can be constructed relative to a cubic projection using the above orientation relations, with the direction of the projection along the [001]B direction, Fig. 1. When the electrical system for a surface or open pit mine is designed, four major considerations should be satisfied in the following order: safety, reliability, flexibility, and cost. Careful planning initially will make expansion for future growth economical as well as possible without extended shutdown of operations. Electrical requirements in surface and open pit mining can be divided into three categories: main substation, plant power, and pit distribution. These systems are integral to each other, but will be dealt with separately here. 11.2-1. Main Substation. A main substation for a mining operation may vary from a 500 kva transformer supplying 480-v power to motor-driven pumps and conveyors, to a 50,000 kva substation serving a large beneficiation plant or a large strip mining operation. Regardless of size, it should be designed with the realization that a failure of the main substation will totally shut down the operation (Fig. 11.2-1.). Location of a main substation usually is a compromise between expense of running the incoming high-voltage transmission lines and the voltage drop of long secondary runs. Based on a geological survey for immediate and future areas of excavation, the main substation should be located as near to the center of load as possible. The site should be out of the blasting area, readily accessible to authorized personnel, and situated where prevailing winds will keep it free from dust or snow. DISCONNECTS AND OVERLOAD PROTECTION. The main substation should have a primary disconnecting device-either a pole top gang-operated switch and fuses of adequate interrupting capacity or, preferably, an oil circuit breaker with properly coordinated relay protection.

ACTIVE drilling operations for oil were carried on during the summer of 1923 in various parts of, western Canada, particularly in Alberta. During the early part of the summer, interest centered in southern Alberta, in the Coutts area, just north of the producing Kevin-Sunburst field of Montana; but on Nov. 14 a strike of oil by British Petroleums Ltd. at its well near Wainwright, 120 mi. east of Edmonton, diverted public attention to a new field. According to present estimates, this well has a possible production of from 60 to 100 bbl. a day; the oil is 15° Be. with an asphaltic base and is obtained from a sand at the depth of 2019-2036 ft. The oil stands at 1700 ft. in the casing and there is sufficient gas pressure to cause it to flow when the well is opened. The oil horizon is in a sandstone in rocks of Colorado age. It is known that there is a terrace structure of which the western edge extends in a northwesterly direction from the vicinity of Hardisty to Viking, where it probably swings more to the north. At Viking a small dome-like structure on this terrace gives rise to an important gas field. Wainwright lies directly northeast of Hardisty. The exact structure in the Wainwright field is unknown. At Fabyan, 6 mi. northwest of Wainwright, the Imperial Oil Co.1 last year brought 1n a large gas well estimated at 14,000,000 cu. ft.; the escaping gas sprayed a small amount of heavy black oil over the derrick. The gas was obtained at a depth of 2727 ft., deeper drilling encountering a water sand. The results of drilling in the Wainwright field are encouraging for future development.

When I was in South Africa during the latter part of 1904, there were three known tin-fields, which may be called the Cape Town, the Bushveld, and the Swaziland fields. The Cape Town Tin-Field. This district is situated near Kuils river, 20 miles west of Cape Town, and 5 miles from Kuils River station on the Cape Town & Stellenbosch railway. The deposits are in granite, intrusive in the Malmesbury beds, which are supposed to be of Silurian or Cambrian age. The granite, resisting denudation better than the surrounding shales, has formed low-lying hills, the highest of which, the Bottlelary Berg, is 1,510 ft. above sea-level. The rock consists of quartz, orthoclase feldspar, and biotite mica; tourmaline is also present. The feldspar occurs in large crystals. The rock is generally decomposed on the surface, and the decomposition sometimes extends as deep as 100 ft. This formation—granite intrusive in Silurian shales— extends for many miles to the northeast, but so far as I know the Kuils River deposits are the only ones now known to occur in it, though probably further prospecting will reveal other deposits. This particular discovery was accidental; alluvial tin being found in the course of boring for oil. The Kuils River Deposit. This deposit comprises both lode and alluvial tin. The lode strikes N-S., and dips about 30&apos; E. into the hill. It is 5 ft. wide, and composed of dense white quartz, in which pinkish-gray cassiterite is distributed in large crystals. The vein also contains considerable quantities of wolframite. THIS title introduces the subject I wish to describe to my fellow members, very few of whom, I hope, have ever had as much trouble with the smelting of ore containing much zinc, either in the lead blast furnace or the matting furnace, its circumstances have forced upon me: First, for several years in Leadville, Colo., after the sulphide ores containing zinc had been developed with greater depth and were sold to the interests with which I was connected for smelting in the blast furnace for the recovery of the lead, silver, and gold; then, in New Mexico and Arizona, where the principal source of ore supply for our custom smelter was from miners who sent most of their product in the form of concentrates, which we briquetted and smelted in the blast. furnace, producing a matte containing copper, silver, and gold, for which we were paid; together with some zinc and lead, which was penalized if in excess of a maximum base set by the refinery to which we sold our copper matte; last, but not least, my experience in Shasta county, Cal., where for the sake of recovering $13 per ton value in copper, silver, and gold, I have smelted ore containing as high as 40 per cent. zinc (the last. 18,951 tons smelted averaged 15 3/10, per cent. zinc) which we not only lost, but which it cost us money to lose.

PRIOR to the development of the bulk-oil carrier, practically all transportation of oil was in barrels and in cans contained in wooden cases; the latter was known as case oil. In the year 1885, approximately two hundred million gallons of petroleum were exported from this country in barrels and about one and three-quarter millions in bulk; less than twelve years later, the shipment in barrels had decreased to nearly one and three-quarter million gallons, while the transport of bulk oil had increased to four hundred eighty-four million gallons. The first modern tanker, the "Glückauf," was built in England in 1886. Her hull, which was 300 ft. long, was divided into compartments by transverse bulk-heads, these compartments being divided by longitu-dinal center-line bulkheads extending throughout the oil spaces. There was a pump room forward of the boiler room, thus providing a cofferdam or safety space. Between the main and upper decks, a narrow trunk extended the full length of the&apos; oil spaces, the trans-verse and longitudinal bulkheads being carried to the upper deck. This allowed for the expansion of the oil from a rise in temperature, and if the tank below the main deck was kept full, the danger of the oil moving with the roll and pitch of the vessel was considerably reduced. Spaces for the carriage of light oil were provided on each side of the vessel outboard of the expansion trunk, while water ballast was carried under the machinery compartments fore and aft. Although vessels previously had been built to carry oil next to the skin of the ship, it is claimed that the "Glückauf" was the first one constructed on the new principle outlined.

Geological storage of spent-fuel assemblies from an operating nuclear reactor has been underway since the Spring of 1980 at the U.S. Department of Energy&apos;s Nevada Test Site. The primary objective of this generic test is to evaluate granite as a medium for deep geological storage of high level reactor waste and to provide data on thermal and thermomechanical behavior of granite from imposed heat loads.(l) The underground installation in the Climax stock granite was sited at about 420 m below the surface and 145 m above the existing water table. As shown in Figure 1, three parallel drifts were excavated spaced on approximately 10 m centers. Seventeen storage holes were drilled at the central drift on 3 m centers in which eleven spent fuel canisters and six thermally identical electrical simulators were emplaced. Electrical resistance heaters were emplaced in vertical holes in the floor of the side drifts on 6 m centers. The thermal output of these heaters is being periodically adjusted to simulate the thermal response of a large storage array. Rock and ventilation air temperatures are being measured continuously in the drifts and throughout the rock surrounding the excavations. Measurements of drift deformation have been made routinely since the emplacement of the spent fuel. Both vertical and horizontal measurements are being taken at five locations along the heater drifts and at six locations along the central canister drift (Fig. 1). Two types of instrumentaton are being used: convergence wire extensometers which are monitored automatically, and a manually operated tape extensometer with which measurements are taken periodically. The tape extensometer measurements were initiated about 6 weeks following fuel emplacement. The lack of a temperature correcting capability for the convergence wire extensometers make that data unavailable for analysis at this time.

THE essential principle of this new process, now in operation in Chili and in North Carolina, for the extraction of copper from its ores, is the dissolving of the oxides of copper by a hot solution of protochloride of iron and common salt. In the action which takes place, the protochloride of iron is converted into peroxide, while the oxides of copper are changed into protochloride and dichloride, the latter of which, though insoluble in water, is readily soluble in a hot strong brine. From the solution thus obtained, metallic iron throws down the copper in a metallic state, regenerating the protochloride of iron; which is then ready for the treatment of a fresh portion of oxidized copper ore. In the case of slimy ores, the contact of the bath with the ore is effected by agitation in tubs; but when the ores are granular, lixiviation in large vats is equally efficient and simpler. The hot solutions, charged with chlorides of copper, are digested in tanks with scrap-iron, or better, are made to flow through covered channels containing the scrap-iron, and in their passage lose the whole of their copper; the reaction at the same time evolving so much heat as to keep up the temperature of the liquid. In order to prevent a certain loss of chlorine, which otherwise takes place from the production of some basic ferric chloride in the reaction between the ferrous chloride and the oxides of copper (both protoxide and dinoxide being generally present in calcined ores), a portion of sulphurous fumes from the roasting is made to pass through the regenerated bath before adding it to fresh ore. This has hitherto been effected by injection, with the aid of a jet of steam.

In September I contributed an article upon Columbite in the Black Hills of Dakota to the American Journal of Science. I had not at that time seen the paper by Professor Charles A. Schaeffer, of Cornell University, upon the occurrence of tautalite in the same region," or I would have gladly made reference to it. His analysis, proving the entire thence of columbic acid, shows that the specimen he analyzed, at least, should be called tantalite, and not columbite, if the distinction between these two closely related species is to be maintained. It is hard to say where the line is to be drawn, in such cases, between two minerals, when the specific characters and the composition are so nearly the same. If the name is to be determined by the relative amounts of tantalic and columbic acids, what shall we call the mineral when these acids are present in nearly equal quantities? Preference was given in this case to the name columbite, for the reason that the specific gravity, as ascertained by the ordinary scales at command, was nearer 6 than 7. As Professor Schaeffer had only one fragment by post, while I had an abundance from many places, it may yet be found that columbic acid predominates in some of the specimens. I therefore use the name columbite or tantalite indifferently. With this explanation I proceed to give a few observations upon the occurrence of the mineral with the tin-ore of the Black Hills. There are two localities, especially, where the mineral is found in the same dike or vein as the cassiterite: 1. at the Etta mine; 2. at the Bob Ingersoll claim. At the Etta it occurs in close association with albite and feldspar in crystals from one to four or five inches broad, and from one-quarter of an inch to three inches thick. IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

Ox completing the filtration of a solution of pig-iron in hydrochloric acid, and after apparently everything had been transferred to the paper, a minute residue was observed remaining in the angle of the beaker in which the solution had been made. This residue had a steel-gray color and metallic luster and was hard and gritty when touched with a glass rod. Placed under a microscope and magnified 400 diameters, the substance was found to be made up almost entirely of opaque cubical crystals with some fragments having the same color and luster as the cubes. The appearance was strikingly like that of a collection of crystals of iron pyrites. The amount of material obtained from ten to twenty grams of borings by solution in dilute hydrochloric acid, and careful decantation from graphite, was barely sufficient for a microscopic slide. A qualitative test of the minute amount of material obtained in this way, showed the presence of considerable titanium. After many fruitless trials by decantation and other methods, sufficient material for quantitative analysis was finally obtained in the following manner: Two hundred and fifty grams of the coarsest possible borings were dissolved in seven liters of hydrochloric acid of sp. gr. 1.03. A solution by the aid of heat took four to five hours. It was allowed to settle, and the clear solution poured off. Great care was taken that none of the material which had settled to the bottom was lost. The graphitic residue was then completely transferred upon fine bolting-cloth, previously Stretched and fastened over the top of a beaker. All graphitic lumps were broken up by the finger while

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining-maps and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining-reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified; indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will he welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

On the extreme fringe of&apos; the great Appalachian coal-basin is a long narrow detached coal-field, which is, in some respects, one of the most important in the United States. This field, about 90 miles long by 2½ to 16 miles wide, extends from the southwest corner of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, through Allegany and Garrett counties, Maryland, Mineral, Grant and Tucker counties, West Virginia, into Randolph county, West Virginia. In this distance four distinct sub-districts are recognized, the Wellersburg in Pennsylvania, the Cumberland-Georges creek in Maryland, and the Elk Garden and the Upper Potomac in West Virginia. The output of coal from the whole field including steam, domestic, smithing and coking-coal of the best quality, is about 4,500,000 tons annually. It is the nearest to tide-water of all the bituminous coal-fields which supply the great coal-markets of the Northern Atlantic seaboard ;

H. S. COE, St. Louis, MO. (written discussion *)-I feel much gratified that Mr. Mishler has confirmed those principles of slime settlement expressed by Mr. Clevenger and myself. I wish to state that, when we wrote the article referred to by. Mr. Mishler we had not seen his earlier article in which he gave a formula to be applied to the settling rate off feed pulp for determining thickener area required at El Tigre. It has been my experience that in cyanide work the settling area required is determined by the settling rate of the feed pulp for perhaps 20 per cent. of all of the ores to be encountered. For the other ores, the area required is greater than that indicated by the settling rate of the feed and corre-sponds to the settlement of a somewhat thicker free-settling pulp. Mr. Mishler, in his paper, has thoroughly outlined a set of tests for determining thickener capacity, which, if carefully carried out, should be entirely reliable, provided allowance is made for changes in the mill feed from time to time. Two features of his paper, I, believe; need comment. In speaking of the time required for slime to flocculate after being fed, Mr. Mishler quite properly states that the actual settling rate for the feed pulp can-not be that of completely flocculated pulp because of this time lost in flocculation. It seems to me, however, that this feature cannot be of very great importance, for the following reason: The upper zones of pulp in a thickener may be, and often are, as thin as the feed pulp. If, therefore, the feed be introduced at sufficient depth below the pulp surface to prevent agitation at the surface, there will be ample time for it to become flocculated before it becomes the surface layer, and it, will
