WEINBERG,' in an investigation of solute distributions along unidirectionally solidified rods of dilute silver in tin alloys, concluded that, for rods of 2 mm diameter or larger, a very high degree of convective mixing takes place in the melt ahead of the advancing interface. Suggested causes for this mixing were (1) thermal convection, (2) convective currents set up by changes in fluid density associated with concentration gradients, and (3) currents set up by changes in volume during freezing. Evidence was presented that causes (2) and (3) were not primarily responsible for solute mixing. Further, convective mixing took place in horizontal rods with temperature gradients as low as 6°C per cm, putting doubt on the importance of thermal convection. In the present work, convective mixing is examined in melts with known initial solute distributions. The absence of a moving solid-liquid interface eliminates convection caused by volume changes on solidification. In the first experiment, three silica tubes 2 mm in diameter and approximately 20 cm long were filled with an alloy of 100 ppm Ag in tin (99.999 pct purity), placed adjacent to one another in a horizontal furnace, and solidified from one end at 1 cm per hr. A110, a Y emitter, was used as tracer. A few centimeters at the start of the rod were left un-melted, to determine the initial concentration Go. FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,900. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. KIRKLAND LAKE, the second most important gold area in Ontario, is situated in the north¬eastern part of the Province, 392 miles north of Toronto by railway. It is reached by a five-mile macadam road from Swastika, a village on the Temiska-ming & Northern Ontario Railway, 63 miles north of Cobalt. Gold, was first found at Kirkland Lake in 1911 by W. H. Wright. on claim No. 1830, now a part of the Wright-Hargreaves mine. In January, 1912, the metal associated with various tellurides was found by Harry Oakes and George Tough on the Tough-Oakes property 3/4 mile east of the lake. The shipping of hand-sorted, extremely high-grade ore, valued at $350 to $450 in gold per ton, from this property created great interest and resulted in numerous other discoveries. The early developments of the area, however, were much retarded on account of war conditions, labor troubles, and owing to the ore zone being largely under the bed of Kirkland Lake or in drift-covered depressions. It was not until early in 1918, when the Lake Shore Co. found its rich orebody under the bottom of Kirkland Lake, that the various ore deposits were believed to be more or less continuous along one main vein system. From that time most of the work in the area has been done along the "main vein" with gratifying results. Production began late in 1912, and up to the end of March, 1923, the five producing mines have yielded gold, with some silver, valued at $8,379,403. The production in 1922 was $2,162,548; that of 1923 should be over $3,000,000. The same general assemblage of rocks which occurs at. Kirkland Lake extends easterly for many miles to Larder Lake and beyond; hence there is a large area containing formations favorable for gold prospecting. In this general area numerous prospects are being operated, and among the most promising ones, may be mentioned the Argonaut, Crown Reserve and Asso-ciated Goldfields near Larder Lake. A 25-mile branch railway is now being constructed across the mineral area from Swastika to Larder Lake, passing through Kirkland Lake.

Michigan produced 16,637,000 bbl. in 1937. This makes it a record year in the history of Michigan's oil industry. During the year 953 wells were completed; 779 within the limits of established fields and 174 wildcats; 616 new oil wells, 68 gas wells and 269 dry holes. Table 1 has been arranged in alphabetical order of field names. Production figures for 1936 have been corrected because December figures were estimated. In this year's summary, December production is based on actual reports. The Leaton and Mt. Pleasant fields have been re-defined. Mt. Pleasant production north of the south line of Denver township, Isabella County, has been included with Leaton in accordance with usual practice in Michigan. The locations of fields discovered since the last map was published1 are shown in Fig. 1. Activity during 1937 Buckeye Field.—The Buckeye field of Gladwin County was the center of greatest activity during the year and was responsible for the increase of 4,700,000 bbl. over the state total for 1936. Buckeye produced 6,428,-000 bbl. in 1937. In this field 328 producing wells were completed during the year—over one-half the oil producers drilled in the state. Buckeye was subject to voluntary and cooperative proration from April 1 to the end of the year. Other pools of the state were not prorated. The new production at Buckeye is from porous Dundee limestone of Devonian age, similar to the older fields. Other New Fields.—The Sherman field was second in importance as a source of new production, with a total of 1,532,000 bbl. Salem township, Allegan County, on the southwest side of the Michigan Basin, was developed during the year. Production at Salem is from the Traverse limestone at a depth of 1600 ft., and 52 producing wells have been drilled in this pool. Other active pools were Clayton and Adams townships, Arenac County. OUR interest in the matter of pyrometers and pyrometry is primarily that of a user of considerable quantities of heat-measuring equipment; and while we play be somewhat critical on the subject we have aimed to make the nature of these comments constructive. The glass industry in America dates back to 1609, when Capt. John Smith started a small glass plant near Jamestown, Va., with a few Italian workmen, to manufacture glass beads for trading with the Indians. While the industry has expanded until it has reached a volume of over $200,000,000 per annum, the means of heat determination in Colonial days was the human eye, and in much of the industry the same means is used today. About 15 yr. ago the largest glass-house supply dealers began to sell platinum pyrometers, but as nearly all of these proved un-satisfactory, pyrometers met a temporary rebuff from the old-time glass manufacturers. As their ruggedness of construction, reliability, and stability have been improved, however, pyrometers have gradually won their way into more and more extensive use throughout the glass trade. But there are still many applications where pyrometers are not used, largely because of cost and upkeep considerations. There are two distinct fields in glass works for pyrometry. The first calls for accurate temperature measurement and the second only demands knowledge of relative comparative fluctuations of temperature, to know whether the work is becoming hotter or colder. For example, in a lehr for annealing glassware and removing strain we want accurate temperatures to know that the ware is heated to the critical temperature for rapid removal of strain. On the other hand, in a glass pot furnace nearly 120 ft. (36 m.) in circumference, where the pyrometer couples only project inside the furnace wall for less than 2 in. (50 mm.), it is inconceivable that these few inches represent the accurate temperature at every point of the 120-ft. circumference but the relative readings as to whether the pyrometer shows schedule temperature fluctuations are valuable indications for control. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.:-I have hunted in vain for a figure which gives a dehydration temperature of cement. I was wondering if Mr. Stütz had a figure of that kind. E. STÜTZ :-No, I am afraid I have not. H. 0. HOFMAN :-I believe some figures have been published that cement disintegrates at 400° or 500° C. It seems tome a very low temperature. Mr. Stütz just made the statement that the disintegration of this briquette begins at the temperature at which the briquette begins to sinter. E. STÜTZ :-Above the sintering point. H. 0. HOFMAN :-The sintering point would be about 1,200° C. E. STÜTZ :-Yes, roughly speaking. I am afraid I have no information about the exact degree of dehydration. H. O. HOFMAN :-I have looked a great deal for such a figure and I have not been able to obtain it. Professor Howe says I might have tried myself. But my interests were directed in another line; although-that is, perhaps, a good suggestion. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS:-Is not Portland cement sometimes used for the test in a cupellation furnace and a drying-out furnace ? H. O. HOFMAN :-Yes, it is used, but that is a higher temperature, of course. But I have been trying to get a figure as to where it loses all its water. I understand it begins to lose water at 500° C. But there are different silicates or hydrosilicates in the cement, so that one would have four or five or sit figures to show the different stages at which the cement loses its water. CHAIRMAN RICHARDS :-I would ask whether the use of this material in blast furnaces has shown increased capacity of furnace or decreased consumption of fuel.

Results of preliminary research on the use of small diameter water jets at high pressure for cutting rocks has demonstrated the possibility of effective cutting of anthracite. Detailed research has, therefore, been conducted at the Skotchinsky Institute of Mining to study the dynamics and structure of the small water jets and the mechanism by which they cut coal. One of the objects of this research was to obtain data for the design of a machine for cutting rock, based on the same principles as that for cutting coal. The productivity of water jet mining machines depends on the hydro- dynamic parameters of the jet. Therefore, the research on small diameter water jets was directed, initially to a study of the nature of the variation of these parameters, and to obtain a profile of dynamic pressure distribution over the section of the jet. As has been confirmed previously, the required jet pressure (to cut coal) lies in the range of 100 to 500 atmospheres. These pressures were utilized for the research. The diameter of the nozzle was changed as ~follows; 0.97; 1.24; 1.5; 2.17; 2.87; and 3.57 mm. Graphs showing dynamic pressures for each nozzle diameter and varied axial dynamic pressure were obtained over distances ranging from 2 to 70 cm from the nozzle. One of the most important hydrodynamic parameters of a jet, closely related to the dynamics of jet disturbance in air, is the magnitude of the axial dynhmic pressure. A study of the variation in this pressure with increasing distance from the nozzle led to the separation of the jet into three specific parts, which differ from each other not only in the nature of the change in dynamic pressure, but also in structural properties.

One of a recent batch of samplcs from the Serra da Baliza, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, contained asphalt and a dark heavy oil; and workmen on the railway from Porto Uniáo to Uruguay discovered asphalt coming from eruptives that outcrop along the Rio de Peixe. The occurrence of asphalt in the triassic eruptives of southern Brazil, however, has been known a long time, according to Dr. Gonzaga de Campos. It is generally believed that the Botucatd sandstone is always a hard vitrified rock, from the metamorphic action of the overflowing eruptive contacts. In this region, howeyer, the contact metamorphism is almost nil; the sandstone is slightly hardened in a narrow zone about 20 to 30 cm. wide. In many places, the sandstone is so friable as to be easily reduced to sand, which is used in mortar for building in Guara-puava and Palmas. South and west from Porto Uniáo, this bench of sandstone is about 50 m. thick, and is capped by a heavy bed of basic eruptives, many of which are amygdaloids. Nature of Rocks Dr. Geo. P. Merrill, after studying the triassic eruptives collected by the Coal Commission, reached the conclusion that "All these rocks are of typical basalt-diabases, not in any essential different other than in structure. An interesting mineralogical phase is its paucity in olivine, which in many cases is completely lacking." Professor Hussak, who carefully studied these rocks and their accessory minerals, decided that in the dikes they are granular (diabase) and that in the lava sheets, porphyritic (augite-porphyrite or melaphyre), and that the latter pass evidently to normal diabases and are always typical of effusive rocks. The examination of many slides from dikes and sheets leads us to adopt the opinion of Professor Hussak; the rocks of the dikes are of ophitic structure, while that of the sheets show a great variety of structure and may vary from almost granular to basaltic. The great paucity in olivine had been noted by Hussak, who classes as melaphyres, the porphyritic triassic rocks in Brazil which contain olivine.

Cobalt clearly increased the activity of carbon in austenite and in ferrite. This effect of cobalt on carbon activity Plausibly accounted for the effect of cobalt on accelerating the austenite to pearlite transformation. Cobalt was found to have only a slight effect on carbon diffisivity in various Fe-Co and Fe-Co-W-Mo austenites, but was found to decrease carbon diffusivity in Fe-Co ferrite. THE effect of cobalt in steel is unique in that it is the only element that reduces hardenability by accelerating the austenite to pearlite reaction. The results of several excellent investigations aimed at explaining the role of cobalt have been published,1"7 but a complete understanding is still lacking. In addition, cobalt significantly enhances the resistance to softening or tempering of highly alloyed highspeed and hot-work tool steels. The resistance to tempering is related to the secondary hardening reactions associated with the fourth stage of tempering during which carbides of molybdenum, tungsten, and/or vanadium form in a martensite matrix. The effect of cobalt on secondary hardening reactions in high-alloy tool steel has received considerable attention, but a full explanation of the reactions involved has not been developed. Inasmuch as austenite to pearlite transformation and secondary hardening involve carbide formation, the present authors believed that the role of cobalt in effecting carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite and in ferrite was important to a fuller understanding of the phenomena involved. TO investigate the effect of cobalt on the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite, an approach was used similar to that used by Darken17 in his experiments on the effect of silicon, manganese, and molybdenum on carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory research to determine the applicability of heavy liquid separation to the evaluation of certain mica ores and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mica ores and associated gangue, accurate analysis of muscovite content could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separation. Where applicable, the method should be particularly suited to the analysis of ores and control of plant operations wherein savings in time would be of considerable advantage. Specifically, there are many instances where a quick plant control method should enable the production of a more uniform grade of mica concentrate. The laboratory use of various heavy liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years.1-8 Sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations. A standard method of analysis for mica in ore samples has not been published or generally accepted by the mica industry. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods for analyzing mica by heavy liquid separation. This report has been prepared to make the methods available to others who may need simple, relatively rapid methods of determining the mica content of ores and plant products. The heavy liquid method of mica determination has recently been adopted by one of the major mica producers for evaluating exploration and mill control samples. DESCRIPTION OF THE ORES AND HEAVY LlQLllD The weathered mica pegmatite ores used in the investigation were obtained from commercial mica op erations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The major mineral constituents of the ores were muscovite, quartz, kaolin, and minerals of the feldspar group. The ores also contained minor quantities of biotite, limonite, and tourmaline. A comparison of the specific gravities of the major constituents of the ores (muscovite 2.76 +, quartz 2.65, kaolin 2.61, and feldspar 2.57), indicates that an effective separation of muscovite from the other minerals can be made in heavy liquids at a specific

A considerable interest in the subject of superlattices has been manifested by many papers and reviews that have recently appeared, both in physical and metallurgical publications. This interest is due largely to the apparent simplicity of the ordering process, which permits the explanation of many phenomena on the basis of elementary theory. Moreover, ordering may cause important changes in the physical properties of alloys. In this paper, we shall discuss the causes of superlattices in terms of simple properties of the elements that give rise to them, together with a series of experiments performed to test our conclusions. Evidence is presented that in some cases the process of ordering is more complex than might be supposed. While the different species of atoms are usually found in random positions in alloy lattices, in some cases unlike atoms tend to be nearest neighbors. Bethe's1 "order of neighbors" is a statistical measure of thib tendency. At suitable compositions it is possible for atoms in large regions to be regularly arranged, which causes superlattice lines to appear. in X-ray diffraction patterns. Bragg and Williams2 haw dealt with this "long-distance order" in their fundamental work 011 superlattices. The magnitude of the effect can be determined from the entropy of mixing, which is calculate from first principles. Since the ordered state has the lower entropy, it must also have a lower internal energy to be stable at any temperature. The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

In a former paper* attention was directed to the various forms of pumping machines employed for permanent work in mining and metallurgical processes. The following is simply a collection of memoranda of work done of a temporary character, and is presented by way of comparison with other work of similar nature. In close proximity to the charcoal fnrnace at Pine Grove, Cumberland County, Pa., is a large deposit of superior hematite iron ore, which has been worked for a number of years, and from which many thousand tons of ore have been taken by open pit workings. In July, 1874, the furnace was blown out and operations at the bank suspended, the machinery for draining being removed except a plunger pump, 18 inches in diameter and 66 inches stroke, operated by a steam-engine by means of rods. The pit was allowed to fill with water, and no steps towards its reclamation were taken until November, 1877. At that time the pit was a pond of water at the base of the mountain, having an area of about four acres and a depth of seventy feet. As the pumps, rods, etc., had been submerged for over three years, and partially buried by the mud washed down from the banks, and as it was determined to change the location of the pump for future operations and drive it by water-power, a temporary pumping apparatus was determined upon for reclaiming the pit and keeping it drained until the permanent arrangements could be completed. By opening an old adit about 10 feet of the water was removed, and the area decreased to three acres. The inflow of springs was found to be 250 gallons per minute, and the amount of water contained in the pit was computed to be 45,000,000 gallons. As the inflow would undoubtedly increase while the water sank in the pit, provision was made for removing at least 60,000,000 gallons, at the rate of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 gallons per day. The company determined to employ a Heald and Cisco centrifugal pump driven by an oscillatinig engine by means of a belt. Steam was supplied by four plain cylinder boilers, each 36 inches diameter

ALTHOUGH many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other interested parties to give out their "inside information." Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County at this time. LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally, until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 2 ½ hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75° west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south. 45° east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parallel syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin', south of the Cement anticline. The position of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of Cement, has not been discovered.

Wrought Hadfield steel was tested in axial tension at from 100° to —196°C, to determine flow and fracture stresses as well as conventional properties. Ductility and related properties, such as fracture stress, decreased continuously with temperature. Peculiarities during straining indicated possible martensite formation or mechanical twinning. THE mechanical properties of austenitic manganese steel have been summarized by Avery and Day,' including the low temperature tensile properties reported by Hadfield and coworkers2,3 " These data show the material to be brittle at both liquid oxygen and liquid 'hydrogen temperatures. Avery and Day report considerable ductility measured by Charpy V-notch tests at —100°F (-73°C). Since the review of low temperature properties by Seigle and Brick' show face-centered cubic structures, other than Hadfield steel, to be ductile at low temperatures, it was felt that a study of tensile properties, between the reported intervals, should show whether the decrease in ductility was a gradual decline or an abrupt drop beginning at some intermediate point. X-ray examinations were made in an attempt to shed further light on the mechanism of work hardening of austenitic manganese steel. The presence of a magnetic constituent has been found by Hall" and by Avery, Homerberg, and Cook." Krivobok7 demonstrated the growth of magnetic constituents on reheating cold-worked specimens. Hadfield2,3 ' and Goss found no a iron. The steel from which the specimens were taken was commercial hot rolled % in. diam rod of electric furnace steel. In China there are more than 30 coal fields menaced by karst-confined water. In the north and east of China there are many collieries which mine coal seams of the Carboniferous and Permian Systems, which are above the Ordovician limestone (general thickness is 500-600 meters). Ordovician limestone is full of karst fissures, contains a lot of water under high pressure (15-65 kg/cm2) near the commercial coal seams (20-80 meters), the water easily infiltrates the thin lime- stone at the point of the structure crevice, so water-irruptions from the floor are the main source of water-related disasters in these coal fields. According to the statistics there were more than 300 accidents of all kinds of water-irruptions from the floor in these fields since the beginning of their development. It is of great significance in developing coal production in the eastern part of China to solve the problem of safe mining of the seams menaced by the karst-confined water of the Ordovician limestone. The research on this subject consists of three parts: (1) investigating the geological structure and hydrogeological conditions of each mine of the mining area; (2) researching the mechanism of water-irruptions from the floor and proposing reliable methods to predict and monitor; (3) improving the mining system and proposing a mining plan with safety precautions against water-caused accidents. The chief task is to research the mechanisms involved and to discover the causes and conditions of the phenomenon. The authors have obtained some findings on this subject in the last five years, making use of the comprehensive observation and research system, which will be discussed under three headings.

A method is outlined for taking into account variation in chemical potential of both components in evaluating capillary effects at growing interfaces. The results are compared with experiment, and seem to be in reasonably good accord for Widman-statten ferrite growing in austenite. ENERY pointed out that during the steady-state growth of phases with a rather small radius of curvature at their advancing edge capillarity cannot be neglected. By proper application of the Laplace equation a correction must be made to the activity gradients down which diffusion occurs. Subsequent workers have concerned themselves with attempts to evaluate specific cases by the use and modification of the principles laid down by Zener.2-5 To solve the problem in its simplest form it is necessary to assume thermodynamic equilibrium at the interface and to select some criterion which will allocate the available free energy between reversible and irreversible processes. Zener chose to assume that the division should be made such that the new phase grew at the maximum rate. Other workers have used the same2,3 or different assumptions, e.g., maximum rate of free-energy dissipation,4 minimum rate of entropy production.5 Li6 has proposed that the "thermokinetic potential" should be a minimum at steady state. The purpose of this presentation is to note that most prior treatments have considered variations due to capillarity only in the chemical potential of the mobile constituent, and that a more consistent treatment must involve a consideration of the variation of chemical potentials of both solute -and sol- vent in a binary system.* As an example, the way in which this arises for ferrite growing from austenite may be illustrated by reference to Fig. l(a). Direct quantitative comparison of the results of concentrating operations on different ores is frequently desired but almost impossible to obtain if comparison has to be made by means of two quantities for each ore, as must be done at present. This paper represents the outgrowth of attempts to arrive at a single-number quantitative measure of the segregation between minerals or metals as the result of concentrating operations. The usual practice in estimating the effectiveness of concentrating operations, particularly those of ore dressing, has been to determine the recovery of the metal or mineral of interest and the grade of the concentrate. The difficulty in quantifying the effectiveness of concentration by the usual criteria may be illustrated by a few examples. Consider, for instance, two lead ores which yield by flotation the same recovery of lead, say 92 per cent., and the same grade of concentrate, say 60 per cent. Pb. If a substantial difference in the grade of the feed had existed, say if one ore contained 5 per cent. Pb and the other 10 per cent., it is clear that the concentrating operation was more effective in the case of the lower grade ore. It is difficult, however, in the light of these data to state how much more effective was the concentration of the lower grade ore. Consider again two lead ores containing 5 and 10 per cent. Pb and yielding concentrates containing 60 and 72 per cent. Pb respectively, with recoveries of 93 and 92 per cent. respectively; it is well-nigh impossiblc to tell from these figures which results represent the best separation of the minerals. It may be noted that in the usual method of estimating the effectiveness of the segregation of mineral values, no consideration is given to the rejection of the unwanted substances from the concentrate, except in the very indirect manner in which it enters into the grade of the concentrate. Consideration of the rejection of gangue from the concentrate, adequately weighted with recovery of the desired mineral in the concentrate, should supply an adequate criterion of concentration effectiveness.

THE purpose of this paper is to present some data and comparisons regarding three types of Rheolaveur plants washing bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam. It deals only with the sections that handle coarse coal. The Rheolaveur system consists of launders or troughs in which coal and its associated impurities are conveyed by water. The impurities, being heavier than the coal, settle toward the bottoms of the launders and are drawn off through specially designed openings called Rheo boxes. Fundamentally, each plant consists of straight-sided, flat-bottomed launders of varying width and length, each launder equipped with one or more Rheo boxes for the removal of high-gravity fractions of the feed that are undesirable in the cleaned coal. Each launder has at least two longitudinal sections, the first with a slope of from 1 1/2 to 4 in. per foot of length, called the classification section. The single-box launder has a classification section followed by a washing section ahead of the box. A two-box launder is a single-box launder followed by a washing section and a second box. The slope of the washing section between the first and second boxes is determined to some extent by tonnage. At the end of the classification section, which may vary from 8 to 15 ft. in length, the slope abruptly flattens out to a slope of from ½ to 1 in. per foot of length. This flatter section of the launder, called the washing section, may vary from a few feet, in a single-box launder, to 15 ft., in a two-box launder.
