ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. One of the primary requirements for successful operation of an enriched gas-drive project is to control the composition of injection gas. This can become a serious and difficult problem, particularly in cases where the enrichment material is being furnished from a number of field -produced gas streams. It is possible to effect control of the injection gas composition through frequent or continuous sampling; however, this can be extremely costly and, in many cases, impractical due to laboratory requirements of time. Another alternative would be to provide a calculation technique which would be flexible and sufficiently accurate to predict composition of the liquid and gas streams of interest at any point in the system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a technique that was used successfully on an operating enriched gas-drive project for developing information which could be used for controlling composition of the injected gas. FIELD OPERATIONS The particular field (hereafter called Example field) in the example operation being discussed is composed of four oil reservoirs (A. B, C and E) and one gas condensate reservoir (D). Casinghead gas from the oil reservoirs and gas from the gas condensate reservoir are gathered through a field gathering system as shown in Fig. I for injection into Reservoir C. The gas mixture which is recovered from the five reservoirs for injection purposes is composed of gases liberated in 19 individual separators, each operating at a separate temperature and pressure. PROPOSED CALCULATION TECHNIQUE It is well known that vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations in general use throughout the petroleum industry can be used to predict reliably the phase behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, particularly at pressures less than 1,000 psig. It is then a simple matter to account for the material on a ComPonent basis by m''ing flash and material balance calculations at each separation point in a hydrocarbon system. Accordingly, it was proposed to use vapor-liquid equilibrium and material balance cal- culations with a medium-sized electronic digital computer as a basis for developing a control procedure for use in controlling injection gas composition in the enriched gas-drive project. Although the approach is a simple one, the numerous vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations involved make the problem laborious; in this particular case, it would have been impractical to make sutficiently complete analysis without the aid of digital computing equipment. On July 25, the first copper ore From American Smelting & Refining Co.'s Mission open pit nine was sent into the new 15,000-tpd concentrator : three clays later, the first rail cars containing the Mission concentrate were sent north to the smelter at Hayden, Ariz. Thus two y,ears after stripping was started, Asarco's new mine, located south of Tucson. went on stream several months ahead of schedule. The plant, designed and constructed by Western Knapp Engineering Co., is expected to be operating at full capacity about September 1. with present plans calling for the copper concentrate from Mission to be shipped to Asarco's smelters at Hayden and El Paso.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions.

It is interesting to note that an attempt has been made to rationalize the effect of prestrain on the strength of Hastelloy X-280 after various aging treatments. However, two points raised by the authors seem to be somewhat unclear. 1) Concerning their Fig. l(a), the authors state: "Extensive dislocation networks are still in evidence. The 24-hr aging at 1500°F and the 15-min soak at 1350°F did not eliminate the dislocations introduced by the 20 pct cold reduction." This is, of course, to be expected since complete "elimination" of dislocations would require recrystallization which does not occur at 1500°F in Hastelloy X. However, recovery

In 1928 Elam,1 discussing the subject of twinning in metals, disclosed that she had observed this phenomenon in aluminum, a metal little susceptible to twinning. The twinning described was one in which the boundary between the twinned portions was not a geometric plane but appeared, in one section, more like a normal grain boundary. Under these circumstances twinning might remain unrecognized by an observer of microscopic sections. She therefore suggested that twinning in aluminum might be much more prevalent than expected. The publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome1 was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the San Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable " borrasca " presents itself where least expected. The interstitial atom principally responsible for the yield point and strain aging in electron-beam-melted tantalum is identified by analysis of the kinetics of the return of the yield point after an increment of plastic deformation. Two sets of specimens contained two levels of oxygen with very low hydrogen contents and the third set had comparable oxygen and hydrogen contents. The activation energy for the return of the yield point agrees well with that for diffusion of oxygen for the first two sets of specimens. For the third set of specimens, the activation-energy value lies between those for diffusion of hydrogen and for diffusion of oxygen. The advent of the dislocation model of plastic deformation in metals has revitalized interest in the yield point and strain aging in bcc metals containing a certain minimum content of interstitial solute elements. Much theoretical and experimental work has been performed in recent years to elucidate the detailed mechanism of these phenomena. The purpose of this investigation is to attempt to identify the principal interstitial element responsible for the yield-point phenomenon in electron-beam-melted tantalum by analysis of the kinetics of the return of the yield point after an increment of plastic deformation. Some of the earlier theories of the yield-point phenomenon proposed a grain boundary film of iron carbide. Such models could not satisfactorily explain all features of strain aging and the yield-point phenomena. The most widely accepted explanation is that of Cottrell,1 later extended by Cottrell and Bilby.2 Strain aging is ascribed to "locking" of dislocations by interstitial solute "atmospheres". The yield-point phenomenon results when the dislocations are torn away from their atmospheres. The strain-aged condition is re-established after sufficient time to allow the interstitial atoms to diffuse to the dislocation lines and re-establish the locking atmospheres. Clearly, the Cottrell-Bilby model is concerned with the bulk of the grain and does not specifically involve the grain boundary. The recent modification of the Cottrell-Bilby model is a redirection of attention to the role of the grain boundary and the possibility of multiplication of a limited number of free dislocations rather than unlocking all of the dislocations. Theories have been advanced by Hahn3 and conrad4 which are modifications of the Cottrell-Bilby theory. The model proposed by Hahn indicates that, although the possibility of un- locking anchored dislocations is not excluded, it implies that unlocking is not necessarily required to explain yield drop. Locking of dislocations during the aging treatment is a necessary part of the theory; however, it assumes that dislocations once locked remain locked. It is suggested that the yield drop observed is a result of the following factors: 1) the presence of a small number of mobile dislocations initially, 2) rapid dislocation multiplication, 3) the stress dependence of dislocation velocity. In the case of bcc metals, locking is considered to be the means by which dislocations are immobilized. Cold working of the metal results in the generation of larger numbers of new dislocations and the stress dependence of the dislocation velocity accounts for yield drop observed. Conrad' has proposed a model similar to the one just described which applies to strain aging of iron and steel and which logically could be extended to other bcc metals. This model also does not require large-scale unlocking of dislocations. It is proposed that, during initial loading of a specimen below the upper yield stress, a few dislocations are torn free of their Cottrell atmospheres at regions of stress concentrations. With an increasing stress, some multiplication of dislocations occurs by a double cross slip mechanism, thus giving a preyield microstrain. At some critical stress represented by the upper yield stress, sudden profuse multiplication of dislocations occurs, enabling plastic flow to proceed at a lower stress. In this model, microstrain, preyielding, and flow represent the movement of free dislocations. It should be noted that this model also requires the locking of dislocations by interstitial solute atoms for the occurrence of a yield point; however, unlocking of large numbers of dislocations is not required. If it is assumed that the yield point will return when some fraction of free dislocations produced during pre-straining are pinned, the number of solute atoms required to pin unit length of a dislocation line can be calculated when prestrain and reloading are done at the same temperature and strain rate. Since the migration of solute atoms back to the stress fields of dislocation lines is controlled by the diffusion rate of interstitial solute atoms, it is to be expected that the activation energy for strain aging would be identical to the activation energy for diffusion. It would also be expected that the strain aging observed will be controlled by the fastest diffusing species capable of producing locking over the temperature range investigated. The rate of yield-point return has been found to be adequately expressed by an empirical rate equation of the form: rate=Ae-Q/RT [1] where A = constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. The holder of this fellowship receives an income of $1,000 and is expected to carry on an investigation in Economic Geology which will add a distinct contribution to the literature. The institution at which the study is pursued will be decided after conference with the members of the Committee of Awards. Geological Survey topographic mapping parties started initial operations in the 1953 Alaskan mapping program. One area to be covered is 17,000 sq miles in the Kantishna River, Melozitna, Tanana Fairbanks, Healy and Mt. McKinley section. The other area to be covered is the Kenai, Tyonek, Blying Sound and Seldovia areas. Average starting salary earned in 1952 by Columbia University School of Engineering graduates was $4000 yearly. This year's graduates can expect to start at about $4300, according to a survey taken by Columbia. Figures cover only those with Bachelor degrees. Graduates with a Master's started at an average of $500 per year more.

Early in 1963, the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., at Inspiration, Ariz., began a program to make automatic the lubrication of several critical points on their KW Dart 37SL haulage trucks. Prior to installation of the automatic lubrication system, all the haulage trucks were serviced by hand every three shifts. Now, with automatic lubrication, the service period has been extended to four shifts. What are the principal benefits to be expected from such a system? 1) Uninterrupted production; 2) extended machinery life; 3) good housekeeping; 4) lower maintenance costs. Of these points, the most important to truck maintenance are extended component life and lower maintenance costs.

A geologist may produce for himself a surprisingly accurate photo base map and stereo coverage at low cost without the use of expensive equipment and complex photogrammetry. If care is taken and the program well thought out, good results can be expected. The only equipment necessary in this method is a small format (small negative size) camera, a few rolls of film and the appropriate filters. A light aircraft, with an opening in the bottom, is preferable so that the pictures can be taken vertically and from inside - the aircraft. The method will produce high resolution prints at large scales in the range of 1: 1200 to 1:7200.

Designing a tailing dam is a major step toward fully integrated mill operation. In the case of large concentrators considerable planning is necessary, and the site of the tailing disposal area may very well dictate the location of the concentrator itself. Before a suitable location can be selected several pertinent factors should be investigated: estimated life expectancy of the mine and, if possible, approximate total tonnage; knowledge of daily mill capacity; and the possibility of future mill expansion. In addition, the area should be able to store tailing for many years and, from a cost and maintenance stand- point, gravity flow will probably be desired.

What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15-20 years? No one who has researched the subject has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company's need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. However, a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown.

THE non-ferrous 'metals industry of the Soviet Union found itself in a very low position at the beginning of the reconstruction period in 1922, due to the absence of modern smelters and the run-down condition of the existing ones. Up to. 1924 there was no great demand for newly smelted non-ferrous metals due to the considerable stocks' of copper, zinc, lead, tin and aluminum in the courtry and also to the undeveloped condition of Soviet industries. However, in 1925 it became necessary to obtain new stocks of non-ferrous metals and in that year 12,000 tons of zinc, 14,000 tons of lead and 2,000 tons of tin and aluminum were imported into the U. S. S. R.

It was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the "Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the " vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat.
