The spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° 17' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1—the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous mica-chlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, litho-margic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. Method of Survey and Apparatus Employed The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area. Tinsley Oil Field.—Mississippi joined the oil-producing states when on Sept. 13, 1939, the Union Producing Company's G. C. Woodruff well No. 1, sec. 13, T. 10 N., R. 3 W., Yazoo County, was completed after drilling plug at 4540 ft. in the Woodruff sand of the Eutaw formation of Cretaceous, producing 300 bbl. per day of 34.4" gravity oil through a ¼-in. choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 80 to 1 and bottom-hole pressure of 2045 lb. This was the discovery well in the Tinsley oil field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4567 ft. and no salt water was encountered. The sand underlies the Selma chalk formation. Nine producing oil wells and one dry hole were drilled and completed by the end of 1939. Two producing sands have been found in the Eutaw and a third sand in the top of the Tuscaloosa formation, called the Woodbine sand in Louisiana and Texas. Faulting is an important factor in the Tinsley field. Total oil production has been approximately 250,000 bbl. from the nine flowing wells. Total depth to top of productive zone was 4540 ft.; to bottoms of productive wells, 4580 ft. Net thickness of the producing formation is 20 to 40 ft., and its porosity is 24 per cent. The deepest zone tested was the Tuscaloosa, in which the depth of hole was 6112 feet. Six hundred and forty acres has been proved for oil production. Jackson Gas Field.—The Jackson gas field has shown a steady decline in the number of wells but the pressure has been maintained. This field is a perfect example of a water-driven field and the time of wells going to salt water is predictable. Five wells were drilled in the Jackson field, of which only one produced. Amory Gas Field.—Interest was renewed in the Amory gas field, where a new well was started in the fall of 1939. Geological Formations.—The deepest well drilled in 1939 was the Willmut Gas and Oil Company's Cleve Love S. F. Johnson No. 1, sec. 29, T. 6 N., R. 1 W., Hinds County. This well encountered the Lower Cretaceous, Trinity series from 3770 to 6422 ft.; Lower Mesozoic from 6422 to 6484 ft. The geological correlations and nomenclature of the formations in Mississippi are shown in the accompanying strati-graphic section.

Discussion of the paper of H. M. WARREN, A. S. BIESECEKER and E. J. POWELL, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 181 to 193. R.. V. NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

The Cornucopia district is situated in northeastern Oregon 25 miles from the Snake River branch of the Oregon Short Line R.R. and 75 miles northeast of Baker City, in the Wallowa Mountains. The formation is principally granodiorite, which has intruded much older rocks locally known as greenstone, and which are probably altered schists. In the upper horizons of the veins, greenstone is found as inclusions in the granitic mass. Both of these formations have been cut by numerous basalt, aplite, and porphyry dikes. Veins of the district are the result of faulting and the consequent crushing of the wall rock. The ore has been deposited irregularly along these faults and formed a lenticular type of vein. The ore varies in width from a few inches to 20 ft.; the average stoping width is about 5 ft. As the basaltic dikes are subsequent to the ore deposition, they are at times a hindrance in development and mining operations; on the other hand, a dike which has followed a vein as a line of least resistance often serves as a good mall in place of the crushed, rather loose granite. The veins generally strike northeast-southwest and dip about 35" to the west. Orebodies are from 100 to 300 ft. in length and about the same in height. The lenses are irregular; inclusions of wall rock are common in the ore and are a factor in reducing the grade. The ores are quartz, carrying some free gold near the surface, but the metals for the most part are in iron sulfides, sometimes associated with chalcopyrite. The gold and silver are in a mechanical combination with the iron, which requires find grinding to liberate them. The ratio of silver to gold is 5 to 1, by weight. Development The Cornucopia Mines Co. owns, and operated until 1920, two mines and two mills of 100 tons capacity each. The sustained high costs and labor shortage, however, necessitated the abandoning of the Union mine, the oldest in the district. Two crosscut tunnels were then started, first, to cut the Last Chance vein at a much lower horizon and, second, to prospect two parallel veins. The ore from the Last Chance vein will go to the old Union mill and the ore from the new veins to the Last Chance mill.

The diffusivity of uranium in liquid cadmium has been measured as a function of temperature by the capillary -bath technique. The diffusivity measurements were made at 4509 500°, 575º, and 650°C, over which temperature range the diffusivity of uranium varied from 1.3 to 2.3 x 10-5 sq cm per sec. The diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was less than that predicted by the Einstein-Stokes equation. VERY little information is available on the diffusivity of uranium in liquid metals. Bonillal has reported a single measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in bismuth. Measurement of the diffusivity of uranium in cadmium was undertaken, not only to supply data in an area in which a dearth of information exists, but also because of a need for this physical property measurement in connection with mass transfer studies now underway in the U-Cd system at Argonne National Laboratory. The capillary-bath method used in this work has been successfully used by other workers2"4 to obtain diffusivities in liquid metal systems. Although considerable experimental technique is required to obtain reliable diffusivity measurements, the basic information required is only that of temperature, capillary tube length, the initial and final compositions of the alloy in the capillary tube, and the composition of the bath into which the solute element is diffusing. From these measurements, diffusivities may be calculated using Fick's law. The diffusivity equations are presented in the Appendix. Equations which are often used to predict diffusivities in dilute solutions5 are the Einstein-Stokes equation: D= (kT)/(6pµr) and the Eyring equation: D = (?,kT/?y?zp), where D= diffusivity (sq cm per sec), k = Boltzman's constant, T= temperature ("K), p = viscosity (poises), r = radius of diffusing molecule or species (cm), and A,, Ay, and A, are the diameters of the diffusing molecule in the three axial directions. For round molecules, the Eyring equation gives values which are 37r times larger than the Einstein-Stokes equation. In this work, the experimental values were compared to the Einstein-Stokes equation. Experimental values of diffusivities in liquid metal systems usually lie between those predicted by the Einstein-Stokes and Eyring equations. The effect of some organic additives in diamond drilling of quartzite was investigated in the laboratory. The drill was designed to measure the rate of penetration, the thrust, and the torque and to record each as a function of the distance drilled. A statistical plan was followed throughout the investigation and an equation representing the bit performance was derived from the mathematical theory of reliability. The drilling torque was found to increase with the use of additives while the sliding coefficient of friction and the wear coefficient decreased. The energy per unit volume consumed was found to increase with the use of additives. A hypothesis explaining the effects achieved with the additives is given. INTRODUCTION For some time researchers have attempted to increase drilling efficiency by adding certain agents to the flushing medium. Much of this interest is the result of the observations of Rehbinder, Shreiner and Zhigach1 They postulated that "...in processes for the mechanical destruction of solids, a region of increased crack formation is created in the deformed layers adjoining that surface of destruction, forming the predestmction zone. The surrounding medium (for example, a liquid) which wets a given solid will penetrate the embryo microcracks of the predestruc-tion zone. Increasing the molecular affinity of this liquid for the surface of the solid considerably facilitates the deformation and destruction by softening the solid in the zone of increased crack formation. In this manner, the hardness or strength of the deformed body is decreased by the influence of the penetration of the liquid into the predestraction zone." This is known as the "Rehbinder effect". Rehbinder's work has prompted many investigators to examine the effect of additives on the mechanical destruction of rocks. Engelmann, Terichow and Selim reported that the maximum penetration of the rock by a diamond point in a solution environment was at the isoelectric point of the solution.* Robinson reported that his results did not appear to support the theory of Rehbinder.3 Joris and .McLaren suggested that additives with surface tension lower than water will be more efficient in cooling the diamonds.4 Their effectiveness in removing the fine cuttings from the face of the bit will also improve the efficiency of the system. They reported an improvement in impregnated bit life and penetration rates with the use of soluble oil additives. In contrast, Long and Agnew, drilling with surface set bits, reported that lubricating agents increase bit temperature and wear.5 A significant change was reported6 in the mechanical properties of rock with polar additives. It was concluded that this change in the mechanical properties of the rock in the presence of the additive is due to the rock hydrophilic properties. Ethylene glycol, glycerine and anionic detergent were selected for this investigation because their surface tension is lower than that of water. The surface tension of these additives for the concentrations studied was 42 to 75 percent of the surface tension of water. A low surface tension additive would wet the surface of the diamonds more easily and hence would be more effective in cooling the diamonds. Another characteristic of these low surface tension additives is their effectiveness in removing the cuttings and preventing the flocculation of the formed particles in the drilling process. This article summarizes the results of an investigation performed at the laboratories of USBM, Twin Cities Mining Research Center. The objective of the investigation was to study the over-all effects of some organic additives on the performance of diamond impregnated bits in atmospheric drilling conditions only and not in downhole pressured conditions.

Lead single crystals have been deformed in tension over the temperature range of 4.2°K to the melting point. Changes in flow stress resulting from temperature cycling and strain rate cycling have been measured as a function of temperature for crystals of different orientations and purity. It was found that the flow stress ratio, after correcting for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus, decreased progressively with temperature above approximately 0.5Tm. The activation energy calculated from the high-temperature portion of the curve was found to be markedly higher than that of self-diffusion. For single glide crystals, the corrected flow stress showed an increase above 0.5 Tm before decreasitzg with temperature. This increase is attributed to static recovery occurrittg during temperature cycling. THE temperature dependence of the flow stress, based on temperature cycling and strain rate cycling, has been extensively investigated,' and on the basis of these results dislocation models of the work-hardening process have been proposed. In general, the flow stress is divided into two parts, ts, the short-range interaction term, which is only effective at low temperatures and which decreases with increasing temperature, and TG, the long-range stress term, which is independent of temperature after allowing for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus. The observations demonstrating that tG/µ is independent of temperature were generally carried out at low temperatures to minimize recovery effects. Several investigations have been reported on flow stress measurements at high temperatures2"5 which demonstrate that TG/µ does not remain constant at temperatures above 0.5Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature of the material in OK). Specifically, Hirsch and warrington3 carried out temperature cycling tests at two strain rates on single and polycrystalline aluminum up to 0.8 Tm and on polycrystalline copper. For aluminum they found that the flow stress ratio (the flow stress at temperature T2, divided by the flow stress at the reference temperature T1 in one temperature cycle) dropped progressively with increasing temperature above 0.5Tm. From the slopes of the high-temperature portions of the curves, they determined an activation energy for the deformation process of 1.6 ev (at best) which they considered was in agreement with the activation energy of self-diffusion, 1.35 ev. Calculations of the activation volume demonstrated that the deformation was not controlled by dislocation climb. They proposed a mechanism in which the rate-controlling process at high temperatures was due to the rate of move- ment of vacancies away from jogs, i.e., that of self-diffusion. Results of Lucke and Buhler4 on single crystals of aluminum confirmed this conclusion. They measured the critical resolved shear stress of aluminum over a wide range of temperature and strain rates. They found that the temperature dependence of the critical resolved shear stress was similar to that of the flow stress ratio, as determined by Hirsch and Warrington, and from their data calculated an activation energy for high-temperature deformation of 1.35 ev identical to that of self-diffusion. More recently Gallagher5 has carried out a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the flow stress ratio of copper, silver, and gold. In all cases, he found that the flow stress ratio, after adjusting for the shear modulus temperature change, drops at high temperatures. The activation energies he determined were found to be appreciably higher than the activation energy of self-diffusion of the material being considered. The flow stress ratio was found to be dependent on the orientation of the material, and, in addition, an anomalous increase in the flow stress ratio for copper, oriented for single glide, was observed above 0.5Tm. The purpose of the present investigation was to measure the critical resolved shear stress, the flow stress ratio, and the strain rate sensitivity of lead, primarily as a function of temperature. The results should indicate whether, following Lucke and Buhler, the critical resolved shear stress of lead has the same temperature dependence as the flow stress, and, following Hirsch and Warrington, whether the activation energy for high-temperature deformation in lead is the same as that of self-diffusion. Lead deforms as a normal fee material,6'7 is available in high-purity form, can readily be grown as single crystals, and, for this investigation, has the very considerable advantage of having a low melting point, 327°C. The observations of the critical resolved shear stress of lead have been published elsewhere.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure was essentially the same as that used in the critical resolved shear stress measurements.' Single crystals of 99.999 pct (59) and 99.9999 pct (69) lead were deformed in tension with a table-model Instron in a silicone oil bath above room temperatures and in a cooled methyl alcohol or liquid-nitrogen bath below room temperatures. The test specimens were rectangular in section, 0.65 by 0.33 cm, and had a 5-cm gage length. The specimens were grown as single crystals with tapered ends, which fitted into matched tapered grips for testing. To obtain the flow stress between two temperatures, specimens were first deformed approximately 1.0 pct at the higher temperature. The test was then stopped, the load relaxed, the oil bath removed without disturbing the specimen, the grips and specimen cooled with a fan and then immersed in liquid nitro-

Consideration was given to simple tests which could be performed on rocks to give a measure of rock drillability. Various methods of breaking rocks were considered and the hardness test developed by Schreiner was selected for this study. The test involves application of an increasing load on the rock face through a flat-faced cylindrical punch until rupture occurs. Test results show that hardness is a good measure of the breaking strength of rocks. Useful relationships are shown to exist between hardness and other physical quantities such as specific disintegration, Young's modulus and sonic velocity. Specific disintegration (volume of rock broken per unit of work input) provides a possible means of comparing the effectiveness of other methods of rock breakage. The relationship between hardness and sonic velocity may be very significant for it may be possible to deduce rock drillability from sonic log data. provided that a mineralogical factor is taken into account. TO test further the results of the work, laboratory drilling tests were performed which closely simulated down-hole pressure conditions. Correlations of drilling results with rock hardness measurements were quite good. It was concluded that rock hardness, as measured in the laboratory or as deduced from sonic logs, could be used in relations for predicting rock drilling performance. INTRODUCTION Drillability of rocks cannot be defined in an absolute manner by a single quantity or measured by a single test. Resistance of rock to drilling depends to a large extent upon the means used for rock destruction. This complicates drillability classification of rocks for there may be as many classifications as there are methods of rock breakage without known functional relations between them. The objective of this work was to develop. in terms of rock destruction behavior, means of selecting the best drilling method for a given rock or the conditions for optimum output from a given drilling method. ANALYSIS OF ROCK DESTRUCTION TESTS Gauthier and Baron' have reviewed the many test methods which have been developed for determining the resistance of rocks to breakage. These include drilling tests, punch tests, scratch tests, resistance to shock, wear tests, etc. A standard drilling test might be to determine the time required to drill a standard depth (1/16 in.) in a rock using a bi-cone microbit (1 1/4-in. diameter) when a standard load (417 Ib) is applied at a standard speed of bit rotation (110 rpm). From the standpoint of similarity, the results of microbit drilling tests would seem to be most representative of the several methods suggested above. However, evaluation of drilling performance by this method is only qualitative and cannot be applied directly to actual drilling conditions. Punch tests basically measure rock hardness. Punches of various shapes and sizes, including small cones for Vickers' and Knoop's tests, the wedge for Epstein's test and the right circular cylinder for Schreiner's test, have been used. Results of these tests lead to a quantitative hardness classification which would seem to be related to the resistance of rock to bit-tooth penetration. Scratch tests are related to the resistance of rocks to abrasion such as would be encountered in drilling with diamonds. Either the width of the scratch obtained at a fixed load or the load required to give a scratch of a fixed width may be used to evaluate surface hardness of the rock. This should be related to the resistance of the rock to wear. The above tests, and probably many others. give relative measurements of the breakage or destruction characteristics of rocks. There is no direct relation between results of these tests and the drillability of rocks. Also, the tests each measure different quantities which have different dimensions and they do not permit direct comparison of numerical values. As one step in rectifying the above difficulties. it is proposed that the results of all test methods be expressed in terms of volume of rock destroyed per unit of work required; this is referred to as "specific disintegration". Test results may then be reported in a form which shows both a classification of rocks in regard to each method and a comparison of methods with regard to each rock. The disadvantage in using specific disintegration is the difficulty of measuring this quantity with accuracy. The volume of rock damage is difficult to measure. as is the true value of work input. Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

THE-Institute of Metals Division opened on Tuesday afternoon with Wheeler P. Davey as chairman and G. E. Edmunds as vice-chairman. Four papers were on the program, two being of a fundamental character. A paper on "Internal Surface in Minerals and Metals," by R. S. Dean and J. Roster, was presented by the latter; C. H. Gottschalk discussed coercive forces in powders. In answer to a question by the chairman. The author stated that he had not investigated [he temperature coefficient of resistance. A paper on "Recrystallization and Grain Growth in Cold Worked Polycrystalline Metals," by L. W. Eastwood, Arthur E. Bousu, 'and C. T. Eddy, was presented by Mr. Eastwood. A. great many quantitative data were given, with little reference to the theory. Theoretical considerations were discussed by Dr. Gottschalk, and C. A. Edwards of the University College of Wales, contributed very interesting comment on the relationship of size and critical strain. Dr. Edwards discussed the necessity of considering strain with time and temperature.

THE cosmic ray continues to engage the attention of the physicists, and according to Millikan and Compton, experiments of the past summer indicate that these rays must come from interstellar space, but not from the stars themselves. According to press reports of the International Congress of Physicists at Rome, the view was given there that these rays have an initiating potential of over 750,000.000 volts. In the field of spectrographic investigation great strides have been made. The U. S. Naval Research Laboratories (R. F. Mehl and G. E. Doan of Lehigh) have just finished a year's work with a "radium torch" or "shadowgraphic apparatus" in the field of the X-ray, that bids fair to displace the latter to a great extent. The torch is more powerful., easier to operate and cheaper. Penetration of 10 in. of steel has been accomplished, which. is much -beyond the- -scope-, of the X-ray..

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

WEDNESDAY night, by long tradition, is al- ways set aside for the annual dinner, even when, as it was this year, it is Ash Wednesday. Whether the somewhat smaller attendance than last year is attributable to that cause, the unexpectedly long persistence of business depression, or whatever may have been the reason, it was a joyous occasion, and the grand ball-room of the Commodore Hotel was as completely filled With diners as * was consistent with com- fort. In the half hour before the dinner was actually served the guests assembled in an adjoining room and not only exchanged greetings but proceeded along the receiving line to greet the guests of honor. The number present was so large that hardly more than half of them had been able to do this before the summons to the dining room sounded and a hearty and immediate response was made to it. Toy balloons at each plate, inflated and directed at the heads of companions or nearby friends, but which were just as likely to carom from the nose of a hurrying waiter, successfully broke the ice as well as not a few plates. It would be interesting to know whether the pleasure the guests derive from these de- vices is in part based on the all-too evident annoyance of the waiters, and what the relative quantitative relationships are.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane-the map.1 In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sightalidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, and the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. A flexible, efficient, and relatively low-cost drilling and blasting operation has evolved at Texasgulf Canada, Ltd.'s Kidd Creek underground mine. Located 32 km (20 miles) north of historic Timmins, Ontario, the underground operation utilizes a sublevel open stoping method developed with large-diameter blastholes. Over the years, Kidd Creek engineers have experimented with various drill-and-blast techniques, leading to the present-day practice. Continuing work is being conducted to further mechanize the blasting operation.

Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D0' " Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahlstrom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8&apos; ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,&apos; dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,&apos; carbon in a Fe,&apos; and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith&apos;s data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken&apos;s model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry&apos;s law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound&apos;s discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms.
