The wzodel of Blandin and Diplunt;, generalized to include a phase factor, is applied to the carbon-carbon interaction in iron. Darken&apos;s "energetic" model is generalized to include not only first neighbor interactions but further neighbor interactions as well. On the bases of these generalized models relations are derived for the activity of carbon in both austenite and ferrite in terms of the carbon-carbon Pair interaction energies. A single function then yields the pair interaction energies consistent with the experimental activities of carbon in both ferrite and austenite. Thus, a simple explanation is given for the observation that the nearest-neighbor interaction between carbon is repulsive in austenite and attractive in ferrite. Certain consequences of this approach are explored. OnE object of the present paper is to attempt to take into account the consequences of electrostatic contributions to the carbon-carbon pair interaction energy for carbon as a solute in iron. Friedel&apos; has shown that oscillations in electrostatic potential are to be expected about a solute atom in a metallic solution. Blandin and 6lant6&apos; have shown that such oscillations yield an interaction energy between pairs of solute atoms that obeys the relation: W{ = A cos(2ftFri + 4>)/(kFri)3 [l] where kF = Fermi wave vector, ri = distance between solute atoms comprising the pair7 <p = phase factor dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent, A = coefficient dependent only on electronic nature of solute and solvent. Machlin3 found that Eq. [I] accurately described the pair interaction energy derived from short-range order measurements based on field ion microscope observations of dilute alloys of platinum. He also found that the value of the phase factor $ derived from residual resistivity measurements agreed well with that obtained from the analysis of the short-range order data. Harrison and paskin4 were able to predict the long-range ordering energy of 0 brass using Relation [I] and residual resistivity values to predict the value of the phase factor $. Machlin5 has repeated their analysis and applied it to the prediction of the long-range ordering energy in AgZn and AgCd with excellent agreement between prediction and experiment. Both A and $ are independent of the crystal structure. The Fermi wave vector depends uniquely upon the conduction electron concentration per unit volume in the spherical approximation of the Fermi surface. Thus, Eq. [I] is expected to apply to both fer- rite and austenite with only one set of values of A and $. Mossbauer studies6 yield the result that iron has one 4s electron. We shall make an assumption found to hold previously for platinum3&apos;7 and nikel, which is that only the s electrons are involved in shielding the perturbing potential of carbon. With this assumption, kF = 1.35 A-l. Although A and $ may be obtained from certain mdels&apos;&apos;&apos; we shall take A and $ to be empirical constants in the spirit of Kohn and osko.&apos; Thus, Eq. [I] involves two adjustible parameters. Consequently, two independent relations in A and $I are required in order to evaluate them for carbon as a solute in iron. We may use a recent analysis of Aaronson, Domain, and poundg who showed that Darken&apos;s energetic model,1° as well as others, can be used to describe the activity-temperature data for carbon in iron in both the aus-tenitic and ferritic phases. Darken&apos;s model takes into account only first neighbor pair interactions. For our needs, all neighbor pairs need to be taken into account. It is convenient to generalize Darken&apos;s model. The result for the partition function for austenite is: over the temperature range 800" to 1200°C and where the uncertainty corresponds to one standard deviation. Eq. [4] effectively yields only one relation. Another relation is required to obtain unique values for A and $. One property of Eq. [4] is that it is independent of crystal structure. Hence, data for a iron can be used to obtain another relation. To arrive at this relation we must generalize Eqs. [2] and [3] so that they may be applied to the bcc a iron. The result is that:

Intevdiffusion and intrinsic diffusiorz coefficients were determined in the uranium-niobium system from diffusion couples analyzed with an electron microbeam probe. A Previously unveported intermediate phase, designated in this report as the delta phase, was found to exist along the mobium-rich side of the miscibility gap. Its composition width was determined from the concentration gradients in the diffusion couples. The presence of this phase was also confirmed by microhardness analysis and metallographic observations. THE excellent corrosion resistant properties, high-temperature strength and reasonable nuclear properties of niobium have prompted its use as an alloying element with uranium and as a possible cladding material for reactor fuel elements. Hence the formation and growth of intermetallic phases as well as diffusion data for the uranium-niobium system are of considerable practical importance to metallurgists and nuclear engineers. Diffusion zones may exhibit varying degrees of complexity dependi.ng upon the mutual solubility of the metals involved, and the intermediate phases which may form. In the simplest case where the metals exhibit a calmplete range of solid solubility, a single phase region is produced. Generally, however, the metals may react to produce a multiphase diffusion zone containing several layers of intermetallic phases. A number of investigatorsl-6 have analyzed the concentration gradients present in diffusion couples in order to investigate phase equilibria and solu- bility limits. If diffusion is the rate-controlling process in establishing a concentration gradient, the compositions at the interfaces of the intermediate phases will represent the equilibrium values expected from the phase diagram at the temperature at which diffusion has taken place. No published information is available at this time on diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A number of investigators7-" have contributed information to the construction of the uranium-niobium phase diagram from other than diffusion techniques. There is good agreement on the high uranium side of the phase diagram, but the high niobium side of the miscibility gap still remains somewhat in doubt. The phase diagram as determined by B. A. Rogers, et al.7 is shown in Fig. 1. The present work was aimed at obtaining fundamental information about the solubility limits of the miscibility gap and diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A Kirkendall effect, which might be expected on the basis of the rather large difference in melting points between uranium (1132°C) and niobium (2415" C), was also investigated. The concentration gradients were measured by an electron microbeam probe technique, similar to that used by Castaing,l2 Adda and philibert,13, l4 and Macres.4

It is shown that conditions suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices are common in crystals hardened either through long-range dislocation interaction or by jog formation on dislocation lines. For dislocations other than screw dislocations or dislocations nearly screw in orientation, helices can be formed with the aid of core difhsion at temperatures low relative to the melting point of the material. It is assumed that, once formed, helices will degenerate into dislocation tangles. THE dislocation tangle is one major dislocation arrangement observed by the transmission electron microscope which had not been predicted previously from dislocation theory. Since first being observed, the tangle itself has become important in applied dislocation theory. The Cambridge school (P. Hirsch) bases part of its theory of work hardening upon this phenomenon.&apos; In spite of the fact that the tangle obviously is a structure of prime importance to a cold-worked crystal, until recently relatively little attention has been paid to the question of exactly why or how tangles arise. It was generally assumed at first that cross slip and perhaps jog formation will lead to tangles. However Wilsdorf and schmitz2 concluded that cross slip cannot markedly contribute to the tangles. The Wilsdorfs and Maddin3&apos;* have proposed that tangles arise by means of prismatic dislocation loops and superjogs which are produced by a precipitation of point defects. Dislocations with superjogs or which have joined with prismatic loops are themselves dislocation sources and they can produce new dislocations, a process they call "mushrooming", which then tangle with each other. There is no question that the Wilsdorfs et al. mechanism as well as the cross slip one can pro- duce tangles. However these may not be the only paths leading to tangle formation. In this paper we wish to consider another way tangles can form. Our work will be based on the theory of dislocation screw We wish to show that whenever a crystal is cold-worked there always is present a "driving force" leading to helix formation and thus to tangle formation. We do not expect to observe well-developed, regular helices in cold-worked metals. Rather we would expect that after a helix is formed random interactions with nearby dislocations will cause a well-developed helical dislocation to go over into an irregular form. A dislocation tangle is, of course, a grouping of dislocations with irregular forms. Therefore we feel that, in accounting for the formation of dislocation tangles, it is sufficient to show that many dislocations in a cold-worked crystal will take on helical form. The crucial step is helix formation. In order to have a straight dislocation assume a helical form, diffusion of vacancies, or interstitials, must occur. Our discussion of tangle formation therefore will be limited to crystals which have been deformed at temperatures ranging from about one fifth to half their absolute melting point. In this tem per a ture range appreciable core diffusion is possible. (There is no problem in explaining tangle formation at temperatures greater than half the melting point. At such temperatures dislocation climb through a bulk diffusion of point defects gives an extra degree of freedom to dislocation motion. This extra freedom of motion makes tangle formation easy.) At temperatures much below one fifth the absolute melting temperature diffusion processes are sufficiently slow that helix formation does not occur. Of course helix or tangle formation could occur in material deformed at very low tempera-tures which was subsequently warmed in order to make the thin specimen necessary for electron-microscope examination. Since within the temperature range of approximately one fifth to half the melting temperature the diffusion of point defects in the core of the dislocation is rapid, we can reasonably assume that within

The fatigue behauior of irradiated copper single crystals is compared to that of unirradiated crystals. Proton or electron irradiation did not substantially change the fatigue-lzj.e, fatigue-hardening-, or slip-line characteristics, while neutron irradiation did appear to alter these parameters. Postfatigue transrrzission electron microscopy did not reveal any marked structural differazces between irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Possible dislocatio~a mechanisnzs to explain the observed behavior are discussed. A LTHOUGH considerable work has been done to ascertain the effects of radiation on the tensile properties of metals (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), little work of a basic nature has been reported on the effect of radiation on fatigue properties. Since it is known that fatigue properties are sensitive to conditions at the surface of the metal, it was felt that charged particle irradiation, whose penetration into metals is very small, might influence the fatigue behavior. To investigate this surface effect, irradiations with 10 mev protons and 1.5 mev electrons were conducted. The range of 10 mev protons in copper is about 0.236 mm; which is very small compared with the thickness of the specimens used (1.53 mm). The range of 1.5 mev electrons is somewhat larger, on the order of 0.665 mm.4 On the other hand, irradiation with reactor neutrons produces damage throughout the entire specimen, so neutron irradiation can be used to study the effects of bulk damage. The damage introduced by proton and neutron irradiation is expected to con!ist of large interstitial dislocation loops,5 tiny (<25A) vacancy loops," and/or various vacancy-rich regions called depleted zones.&apos; In the case of electron irradiation at about -173°C the damage is expected to consist of isolated Frenkel pairs.&apos; The effect of radiation damage on the fatigue properties of some engineering materials has been reported,g,10 but the results are not clear-cut or consistent. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Zone-refined copper was used to grow single crystals by a modified Bridgeman technique in an inert helium atmosphere. Using a seeding method, single crystals were obtained as bars about 6 in. long with a cross section of 3 by $ in. Immediately upon removal from the split-mold graphite boat in which they were grown, the very soft bars were embedded in a room-temperature setting plastic. They could then be cut into specimen lengths without introducing any long-range damage. Generally, four or five specimens plus one seed were obtained from each bar. The plastic material was dissolved away in acetone and the orientation of each sample was checked by the standard Laue X-ray

Intense primary and cross-slip traces were observed in easy glide on Cu: 6 pct-A1 single crystals deformed in tension. A mechanism of cooperative source operation is developed which recognizes that both the applied stress and that resolved from dislocation arrays contribute to the stress on a source. By considering the stress from arrays, the activation of secondary systems in easy glide and the difference in appearance of slip markings on pure and solid-solution crystals are explained. Furthermore the cross-slip system is predicted to be second favored during easy glide for a large range of orientations. FROM many studies of easy glide in fcc metal crystals, a pattern of observations has developed which still requires full explanation. In pure copper, aluminum, and silver, the easy-glide, slip traces are fine and uniform with steps 50 to 100A on the primary* system.1-4 Yet it has not been at all clear why slip in the pure materials should occur in this way. On the contrary, one might expect, with simple slip and a low hardening rate, that the weakest sources on the primary system would operate extensively to produce strong slip traces. In a brass, however, intense slip steps up to 0.5 are found on both primary and cross-slip system4,6-9 seeger10 has pointed out that in a material of low stacking-fault energy such as a brass, extensive easy-glide cross-slip could not be thermally activated, but rather must originate on the cross-slip plane. In further explanation, the wilsdorfs4 and seeger10 noted that only the cross-slip system would not harden differently than the primary, whatever the latent hardening tendencies of other systems; therefore, in brass, which exhibits high latent hardening, the cross-slip is the only secondary system which could be expected to operate extensively, once it became active. The explanation of how the cross-slip system, on which the applied stress is low, becomes activated has been related, in a nonspecific way, to pileups by Hirsch11 and Honeycombe.l2 In the work to be described, deformation traces on solid-solution Cu: 6 pct A1 single crvstals were studied with conventional light microscopy and a mechanism proposed to explain both the observed activation of secondary systems in easy glide and the difference in appearance of slip markings on pure and solid-solution crystals. EXPERIMENTAL In preparing the Cu-A1 single crystals, rectangular bars approximately 0.4 in. by 0.4 in. by 6 in. were first machined from ingots made by vacuum melting copper of 99.999 pct and aluminum of 99.99 pct purity. They were then packed in powdered graphite and the crystals grown in a modified Bridgman apparatus at a rate of 5 mm per hr under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Crystal perfection as indicated by Laue back-reflection spots was good except for the last inch to freeze, which was discarded. Orientations so determined are shown in Fig. 1. Tensile specimens with a reduced gage section were obtained by masking the ends with electrical tape and chemically polishing in a solution of 20 pct HNO3, 24 pct HAc, 52 pct H3PO4, 2 pct Hcl, and 2 pct H20 at room temperature.13 Finally, the specimens were electropolished in a 30 pct ortho-phosphoric acid bath at 12 v. Tensile deformation was performed in an Instron testing machine at a strain rate of approximately 1 pct per min. During easy glide, extensive cross-slip was observed with all crystals, in spite of the low Schmid factor on this system, and in no case was any other secondary trace encountered. A certain sequence of slip-line development was associated with the extension. At yielding, intense primary traces passing completely through the crystal developed at some point on the gage section, generally near the grips; weak cross-slip traces also appeared, extending from the primary traces into the adjacent undeformed crystal, Fig. 2. This paper is a review of recoverable reserves of bituminous coal in the Southern Appalachian area, according to the latest published estimates. A few comparisons are made, some apparent trends are discussed, and some comments are made regarding the limitations of present estimates. The definition of Southern Appalachian area used in this report is somewhat arbitrary. It includes all the bituminous coal deposits of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. All of West Virginia has been excluded. The East Kentucky and Virginia counties included were selected in connection with a literature study the writer made in 1959 of possible coal supply areas for the Tennessee Valley Authority. The selected counties were considered to be the only ones from which TVA might expect to obtain coal. The availability of coal from some of these counties is doubtful, but no other East Kentucky counties were considered more than remote possibilities. With these limitations, the Appalachian area covered is that from which producers of electric power and steel and commercial coal users, located in the Southeastern U. S., may expect to obtain their supplies of coal. Of course, it is recognized that coal from the eastern interior fields is also available to many of these same organizations. RANK AND QUALITY OF THE COALS Practically all the coals in the Southern Appalachian region are of high volatile A bituminous rank. An occasional sample indicates a slightly lower rank, but such samples may be oxidized or otherwise not representative. Some thin beds in Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain in Alabama and Georgia, are low volatile bituminous coals, but they have not been mined extensively in modern times. There is a possibility that some of the deeper beds along the southeastern edge of the Warrior field of Alabama are near the Low-medium volatile bituminous dividing line. The Sewanee bed and some other minor ones of the Southern Tennessee field, some of the lower beds in Virginia, many beds in Sand and Lookout Mountains in Georgia and Alabama, one or more beds in the Coosa field, possibly some lower beds in the Cahaba field, and most of the beds along the southeastern edge of the Warrior field and the southern end of the Sequatchie anticline of Alabama, are of medium volatile bituminous rank. The quality of the Southern Appalachian coals is highly variable. Some of them, particularly such prevailingly thin ones as the Black Creek bed of Alabama and the Straight Creek bed of Kentucky, are unusually low in mineral matter— probably the lowest in the U. S. With the exception of certain beds and local areas, Alabama and East Kentucky coals probably have as low average ash and sulfur content as can be found in any sizeable coal area in the country. The sulfur content of Southern Appalachian coals is also variable, but few beds are consistently high in sulfur. In Alabama, sulfur generally increases from southeast to northwest across the Warrior field, but this trend is not quite as clear in the other states. A few beds in Northern Tennessee are prevailingly high in sulfur. All Southern Appalachian coals are potential coking coals if they can be prepared to meet chemical requirements. Only a comparatively small part of the medium volatile A bituminous coal, but most of the medium volatile bituminous coal mined is actually used for coking purposes. An estimate of reserves of coking coal under the requirements of present practice, could be compiled comparatively easily, but this probably has never been done. The reserve of coal that can be coked as an ingredient of a suitable blend is probably many times the size of the reserves of coal that will yield suitable blast furnace and foundary coke without blending. WHAT CONSTITUTES ECONOMICALLY RECOVERABLE COAL RESERVES? When one first realizes the vast extent of the coal-bearing rocks in the Southern Appalachian area, (see Fig. 1) the thought is likely to occur that the supply of coal is inexhaustible. The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

INTRODUCTION MOST of the electron diffraction studies of oxide films which form on metals and alloys have been carried out by oxidizing the specimens in an auxiliary furnace, cooling down to room temperature and then inserting the sample in the camera and taking a diffraction photograph. Prior to the investigations at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, no systematic study of the oxidation of any metal or alloy had been made over a wide temperature range with photographs taken at elevated temperatures except the investigation of iron by Jackson and Quarrell.1 In order to interpret the electron diffraction patterns of the oxides which may form on alloys, it seemed advisable to make a comprehensive study of the oxidation of the purest metals available in the bulk form. Thus far studies have been completed on iron,2 cobalt,2 nickel,2 chromium ,2 Copper2, tungsten,3 molybdenum,3 beryllium ,4 uranium,4 thorium4 titanium5 and zirconium5 while investigations are in progress on tantalum and columbium, The next step in the study is concerned with the investigation of the oxides which form on binary alloys. Some of the alloys consist of a single, phase while others contain more than one phase. The identification of the oxides on the surface of a binary alloy may be more difficult than on the metals since oxides containing both metals as well as those of each metal separately may form. Furthermore, it is possible that solid solutions of the various oxides may occur. In these cases the electron diffraction method may not be able to identify the oxidation products unequivocally, Examples of solid solutions which may present difficulties are MoO2 and W02, Fe3O4 and FeO-Cr2O3 since the diffraction patterns are so similar. Since electron diffraction can determine only the structure of the oxide, the chemical composition must be inferred from the diffraction data based upon X ray diffraction investigations of specimens of known composition. It is possible in some cases to decide whether a given solid phase reaction can occur on the surface of an alloy by a study of available thermodynamic data. Table I lists the equations for the formation of most of the oxides from the elements together with values of log10 KR for the several temperatures. WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

There are many studies of flow in radial systems that can be used to interpret unsteady rerervoir flow problems. Although solutions for systems of infinite extent can be used to generate solutions fur finite ow systems by superposition, application is tedious. In this paper a step is made toward simplifying calcu1ations of such solutions for finite flow systems. Superposition is used to produce a tabulu-lion of the dimension1e.s.s pressure drop function at several locations within a bounded square that has a well at its center. The square system provides a useful building block that may be used to generate flow behavior for any rectangular shape whose sides are in integral ratios. Values of the tabulated dimensionless pressure drop function are simply added to obtain the dimensionless pressure drop function for the desired rectangulm system. The rectangular system may contain any number of wells producing at any rates. Furthermore, the outer boundaries of the rectangular system may be closed (no-flow) or they may he at constant pressure. Mixed conditions also may be conyidered. Tables of the dimensionless pressure drop function for the square system are presented and various applications of the technique are illustrated. Introduction In 1945, van Everdingen and Hurst&apos; published solutions for the problem of water influx into a cylindrical reservoir. Since this problem is mathematically identical with the depletion of a cylindrical reservoir with a well at the origin, the van Everdingen-Hurst solution may be used to study the depletion problem. In their analysis, they assumed that the fluid had a small, constant compressibility such that flow was governed by the diffusivity equation For a constant production rate q starting at time zero, van Everdingen and Hurst showed that the unsteady pressurc distribution for both finite and infinite systems could be expressed in terms of a dimensionless pressure &apos;Sabulations of the dimensionless pressure drop for a unit value of r, were provided by van Everdingen and Hurst,&apos; and later by Chatas.&apos; Others also presented values in graphical or tabular form." If the radius of the well becomes vanishingly small, r,+ O, the line source solution may be used for Eq. 2 when infinite systems are considered. Eqs. 5 and 6 are excellent approximations for Eq. 2 under certain conditions: In 1954, Matthews, Brons and HazebroekV emonstrated that solutions such as Eq. 5 can be superposed to generate the behavior of bounded geometric shapes; i.e., the behavior of a bounded single-well system can be calculated by adding together the pressure disturbances caused by the appropriate array of an infinite number of wells producing from an infinite system. The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wil-barger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. Developments during 1940 The encouraging outcome of exploration and development in Montague and Cooke Counties and generally greater activity throughout the district resulted in the drilling of some 1700 wells during 1940, about 350 more wells than were drilled in 1939. Approximately 1250 of these tests were completed as oil wells. Production likewise increased during I940 to the extent of 8 million barrels more than the 25 1/2 million barrels produced in 1939. In spite of this large increase in production, known oil reserves again increased substantially. As is usually characteristic of this district, the new reserves were from a large number of fields, none of which were of such magnitude as to be important to the oil industry. Nevertheless, the Fargo field, Wilbarger County, deserves mention as one of the more important discoveries in this district during 1940. Following seismic surveys, the hmerada Petroleum Corporation located its No. I Goodpasture in sec. 35, block IS, H. and T. C. R. R. Co. survey, and drilled it to a total depth of 6717 ft. This well was completed in July 1940 through perforations in the casing from a pay between 3230 and 3252 ft. for an initial production of 241.5 bbl. on an 8-hr. pumping test. Other potential producing horizons were found in the Pennsyl-vanian at depths of 3960 to 3995 ft., 4208 to 11.234 ft., 4407 to 4422 ft., and in the Ordovician at 6300 ft. Wells completed to date in the several Pennsylvanian horizons have an average daily potential of 600 bbl. of oil. Although no wells have yet been completed in the Ellenburger dolomite (Ordovician), the discovery well swabbed I5 bbl. per hour from this formation before plugging back for completion in an upper horizon.

FOR the diffusion of copper in silver-rich alloys, there have been only two previous investigations, that of Seith and Peretti in 1936, and that of Sawatzky and Jaumot2 in 1957. Seith and Peretti obtained a value of 24.8 keal per g-atom for the activation energy of diffusion whereas Sawatzky and Jaumot obtained a value of 46.1 keal per g-atom. Admittedly, Seith and Peretti used relatively high concentrations of 2 at. pet Cu and polycrystalline diffusion couples, while Sawatzky and Jaumot investigated tracer diffusion in single crystals of silver. The difference in the results, however, seems too large to attribute solely to solute concentration, as a change of over 20 keal per g-atom in the activation energy suggests a change in the mechanism of diffusion. Therefore, in the present investigation the diffusion coefficient for copper in polycrystalline Ag-2 at, pet Cu alloy is re-established using conventional sandwich-type diffusion couples and electron-probe microanalyses, and the results are compared with those of the previous studies. The diffusion couples were prepared from high-purity silver (99.999 pet) and high-purity copper (99.999 pet). The silver disks, 1/4 in. long and 4 in. in diam, were machined from an ingot which had been solidified in a dynamic vacuum of 10-3 mm of Hg to eliminate oxygen absorption which otherwise would result in copper oxide precipitation in the weld zone. The alloy disks of similar dimensions were machined from an alloy ingot (nominal composition 2 at. pet Cu) which had been unidirectionally solidified to obtain a predictable solute concentration,3 and homogenized for 1 week at 800°C. Sandwich diffusion couples were made by pressure welding an alloy disk between two silver disks in an induction heating coil. The couples were diffusion-annealed at temperatures of 800°, 756°, 699°, and 630°C in tube furnaces in which the temperature was controlled to better than ± l°C. The diffusion couples were examined metallographically for weld defects, and couples showing even minute defects at the weld interfaces were rejected. Concentration penetration curves were established using an A.R.L. Microprobe analyzer. CuKO radiation was counted and converted to concentration using 0.5 and 1.0 wt pet Cu chemically analyzed standards. Initially, four continuous profiles were obtained, and averaged to obtain the final diffusion curve. The initial analysis was performed commercially and the welds were not located with respect to the profile. Therefore, the results were rechecked by the authors using the Mellon Institute A.R.L. probe. In the latter case, concentrations were obtained at 10-µ steps for four different traverses, and then averaged to obtain

The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: Tr = TR80K&apos;K" [I] in which Tr, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K&apos;, and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range—2.5 to 2.7—T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. IN recent years interest has been aroused in flotation rate studies both from a technical and a more practical aspect. With increasing fineness of grind becoming a necessity in treatment of low grade ores, difference:; in flotation rates of various size ranges will assume importance in the evaluation of overall recovery results. Theoretical analysis of flotation kinetics was initiated by Schuhmann,&apos; who sought to define flotation rate of a given mineral and specified size range in terms of certain physical variables of the flotation system. Using as a basis for his analysis the bubble-particle encounter hypothesis previously advanced by Gaudin,&apos; Schuhmann writes for the rate of flotation (R,.) of particles of average size x, Rx = PcPa(x) V F. [1] In this relation Pc and Pa represent, respectively, the probability of collision between particle and gas bubble in a given time interval and the probability of adhesion of particle to the bubble after collision. Rigorously speaking, the term PC does not have the significance of a probability factor, since it depends on the time interval and therefore can be numerically greater than unity. The term c(x) expresses the concentration of particles of an average size x in the flotation cell in weight per unit volume of pulp, and V denotes the total volume of pulp in the cell. The product, P,c(x)V, defines the frequency of particle-bubble collisl.on, and when it is multiplied by P,, the number of collisions per unit time resulting in successful adherence is obtained. The factor, F, measures the froth stability and is introduced because after fruitful bubble-particle contact some particles may still riot reach the froth launder. Coalescence of bubbles in the froth column or too short a bubble life could account for this effect. Schuhmann also introduced the concept of "specific flotation rate" (Q) to allow for the relative abundance of different mineral species in the flotation pulp. The specific flotation rate, having the dimension of reciprocal time, is defined as Eq. 2: Qx =Rx/c(x)v [2] and it also follows from Eq. 1 that Qx = PcPaF. [31 The theoretical aspects of flotation kinetics were also considered by Sutherland,3 who tried to improve Eq. 1 by expressing the probability factors in terms of such physical variables as particle radius (x), bubble radius (X), velocity of bubble relative to particle (v), the number of bubbles per unit volume of pulp (N) and the induction period (A) necessary for air-mineral adhesion.
