A new method of satellite imagery analysis has been developed during underground mine roof research. Landsat positive film transparencies were projected onto topographic base maps to scale and lineaments enhanced with a Ronchi grating (method A). Thirty-five millimeter slides of video-enhanced scenes were also projected onto base maps (method B). Both methods permit direct plotting of lineaments to scale and direct correlation with surface and subsurface data wing transparent overlays.

The consumption of barytes in certain paints, polyurethane foams, seamless flooring, glass, brake linings, plastisol gaskets for food containers, and in fluids used for gastrointestinal X-ray examinations relies on the unique properties of barium sulfate. There are no readily available mineral substitutes. Barytes are also the essential raw material for the manufacture of industrially important barium chemicals. High quality barite ore has become scarce throughout the world. Processing ore into quality end products is both capital and energy intensive. These factors have tended to limit availability and increase Prices which have encouraged the use of alternative or competitive materials and restricted market growth.

A downdraft traveling grate process to agglomerate pelletized iron ore concentrates has been successfully demonstrated in a pilot plant at Carrollville, Wis. Work there followed several years of development in the Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. laboratories, and the pilot plant phase was carried out in co-operation with Arthur G. McKee & Co., consultants and engineers to the iron and steel industry. End result of the process is conversion of iron ore concentrates into a form which can easily be transported and smelted in the blast furnace.

THE methods of handling the oil output of the mid-continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. WOODEN CAGING TANKS Practically all of the oil sold to pipe lines and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways-leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The-sizes in, common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk,, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where .water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks.

During the two years in which the new reduction-works of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. have been in operation at Douglas, Ariz., there has developed a remarkable condition in regard to the corrosive action of the water used to cool the jackets of the blast-furnaces. Were it not for the many contradictory features, it might pass as one of the unavoidable troubles due to the composition of the water. This water, obtained from wells 600 ft. deep, is also used in the steam-boilers, and its composition, as shown by the following analysis, does not indicate the presence of any ingredient which would explain the corrosion: Grains Per U. In from 10 to 12 months the inner plates have been reduced by corrosion to a thickness of from + to & in., while the outer plate in the same time is reduced by less than 1/16 in., and the stiffeners show very little corrosion. The plates are pitted and eaten away in some places more than in others. There is practically no scale found on the jackets, but when cleaned considerable iron oxide is found in the bottoms. This paper discusses the materials handling problems encountered in cement plants in the areas of raw and finished product grinding and cement storage. It illustrates by examples taken from actual installations, how optimum feed rate is maintained in grinding circuits with properly applied bin dischargers (vibrating hoppers, Mexican feed boxes and aerated bin bottoms) for materials with high moisture content and/or difficult handling characteristics. Initial operating problems with the equipment will be discussed and maintenance requirements will be indicated for comparison purposes. In a modern cement plant, properly functioning bins and feeders are as essential as process control, for no process control system, however sophisticated, can perform efficiently if raw materials do not flow into the plant processing facilities at the required time and rate. Most materials used in the manufacture of portland cement - such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone, gypsum, clinker or cement itself-have difficult handling characteristics under specific conditions. High moisture content or even dampness due to condensation may create bin hang-ups, arching and ratholing, all of which result in improper functioning of the feeders or proportioning equipment. The occurrence of these problems in existing cement plants spurred a search for the corrective devices discussed in this article. The equipment investigated included bin dischargers in the form of vibrating hoppers for moist raw materials, Mexican feed boxes for clinker and aerated bin bottoms for cement. Operating experience with different types of bin dischargers showed that the actual performance of some did not come up to the expected level under prevailing operating conditions. The aim of this paper is to record the results of this experience and there- by aid designers and/or operators in selecting the most suitable equipment for their requirements. BIN DISCHARGERS (GENERAL) A discharger is a device that causes stored solids to flow out of a hopper without metering the rate of flow as a feeder does. The investigation discussed here encompasses the following types of bin dischargers used in a cement plant: (1) vibrating hoppers (horizontal motion), (2) whirlpool hoppers (horizontal and vertical motion), (3) aerated bin bottoms (air fluidization), and (4) Mexican feed boxes. Most of the bins used in the cement industry are of the plug flow type. Raw materials with difficult handling characteristics such as high moisture content may cause flow problems when fed through small openings (12 x 18 in.), even if two walls of the bin are vertical.' The most appropriate solution to these flow problems would be the installation of separate mass flow bins for the different materials such as silica sand, iron ore fines, crushed limestone and gypsum, with each bin correctly designed from test data obtained by measuring the flow properties of representative samples. However, limited storage capacity and plant space usually preclude this approach. Quantitative design of bins for flow based on measured flow properties of representative samples of the bulk solid to be handled is no longer an "engineering art," thanks to the basic research done on the flow of bulk solids in bins during the last decade.2, Where space limitations exist, however, or where improvements are being sought for equipment already installed, bin dischargers offer a satisfactory solution to flow problems. They can be applied effectively under flat-bottom bins or mounted to existing plug-flow bins with very little modification to these facilities. In both the foregoing cases, plug flow will be maintained, but the flow channel will be considerably increased so that it is larger than the discharger's bin-side diameter, and material flow can be sustained if the discharger is correctly selected. The main purpose of a bin discharger is to draw the bulk solids across the whole area of the bin outlet, to make the opening fully effective. An investigation has been conducted to determine the nature of the crystallographic substructure of nickel and a 1.0 wt pct Ag-Ni alloy which had been undercooled 105°C prior to solidification. A rotating back-reflection X-ray technique and modified Weissmann diffractometer were used to orient single-crystal sections from these poly-crystalline ingots and to determine the substruc-tural features of these single crystals, The sub-grain size in the pure nickel ingot is 0.5 mm diam while the silver-doped nickel subgrain size is only 0.1 mm diam. The misorientation between adjacent subgrains is approximately 1 deg of arc in both ingots, and the spread of orientation of sub-grains about the mean orientation of the crystal is 5 deg of arc in both ingots. The addition of silver results in a stable impurity substructure which is preserved during isothermal solidification and subsequent cooling to room temperature. In the absence of silver the initial impurity substructure is destroyed by dislocation interactions which produce a secondary substructure which grows to a size five times larger than the initial substructure. THE process of undercooling a metal entails cooling of the molten sample below the equilibrium freezing point without the occurrence of solidification, i.e., by exercising proper constraint over the experimental variables contributing to nucleation in the melt. The current work of walker1 and Colligan Metal reports undercooling large continuous samples of nickel by imposing appropriate restrictions upon the parameters of solidification. The silver-nickel equilibrium diagram3 reveals the presence of a monotectic reaction at 1435°C. At this temperature the maximum solid solubility of silver in nickel is approximately 3 wt pct, but this solubility decreases with decreasing temperature and the solute is rejected as a silver-rich liquid phase at temperatures below 1435°C. Thus, the 1.0 wt pct solute should be held in solution during undercooling and solidification and subsequently precipitate as a silver-rich liquid phase at grain and subgrain boundaries following solidification during cooling below 1435. This assumes no solute segregation sufficient to cause the monotectic reaction. One would expect this second phase to inhibit grain and subgrain growth by retarding dislocation motion after solidification is complete. The effectiveness of silver addition in growth retardation of high-angle grain boundaries has been demonstrated by Colligan and suprenantS4 The principal [l00] dendrite growth directions in a 2 wt pct Ag-Ni alloy undercooled 53 all radiated from the nucleation site. A similar pure nickel ingot undercooled 59°C exhibited a random orientation of [l00] dendrite directions with respect to the nucleation site. Since undoped nickel ingots do not retain any evidence of the casting or solidification texture and silver-doped ingots do retain this texture, it is reasonable to assume that considerable grain growth has taken place in the pure nickel. These particular experiments were performed in order to reveal the differences, if any, in the features of the crystallographic substructure of undoped undercooled nickel and silver-doped undercooled nickel. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Data are reported on selected specimens from two massive (approximately 260 g) undercooled ingots of nickel. One ingot consisted of electrolytic nickel and the other of this same material with 1.0 wt pct addition of high-purity silver. Powder patterns were taken of both the as-received and as-solidified materials; in all cases the reflections recorded were attributable to the individual elements nickel and/or silver. Fig. 1 is a. schematic diagram of the apparatus employed for the undercooling experiments. The equipment consists in part of a fused silica crucible for containing the charge. A fused silica tube encloses the system, which is covered by a brass cap to permit partial sealing of the inert atmosphere. This cap contains a hole through which a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple is inserted for temperature measurement. The charge is inductively heated under a purified argon atmosphere.

This paper describes a method for obtaining compositions of gas and oil phases in equilibrium with each other at a given reservoir temperature and pressure as lean or enriched gas is injected into a reservoir oil not in equilibrium with the gas. The method is based on calculation of equilibrium constants, K, from the equation log Kp = A + B F, where p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. The paper explains how A and B could be determined with a minimum amount of data. The method consists of calculating equilibrium constants as a function of liquid composition and using the K's to calculate changes in compositiort of injection gas as it successively contacts original resetvoir oil at the gas-oil front and the change in composition of reservoir oil as it is successively contacted by the injection gas in the vicinity of an injection well. An iterative process is required. Two examples of the method are given which show how oil and gas compositions and properties are calculated with the aid of a computer. INTRODUCTION The calculation of recovery from lean-gas or enriched-gas injection into a saturated or under-saturated reservoir oil requires a knowledge of how phase properties change in a reservoir between injection well and producing well. To determine the phase compositions or properties experimentally would be difficult and time consuming, especially if one wanted to look at the effect of various injection gas compositions. For some fields an engineer would want to make preliminary calculations on the economics of gas injection before he makes the decision to spend a corrsiderable sum of money for laboratory work to obtain the necessary fluid properties. A method for calculatine compositions and properties based on a minimum of laboratory data is described. The minimum amount of data required is injection gas and reservoir oil composition and injection gas solubility as a function of pressure for an undersaturated oil, or the compositions of mixtures of reservoir fluid with two or more enriched gases, which mixtures have a bubble-point pressure that is the same as the expected average displacement pressure. On the other hand, if the economics appear to be attractive, more laboratory data can be obtained in the form of equilibrium constants for three or more mixtures of the reservoir fluid and injection gases. The method is based on the calculation of K's from the equation, log Kp = A + B F, where K is equilibrium constant, p is pressure and F is component characterization factor. This method of plotting K data by means of the above equation is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.1 A and B are constants that vary with a composition parameter. It is shown how experimental data are used to determine how A and B vary with composition. BASIS OF METHOD EQUILIBRIUM CONSTANTS Equilibrium constant (K) data are required for this method. The K of each component is obtained from an equation that gives the product of K and pressure as a function of component characterization factor. The characterization factor F = b(l/Tb — l/T), where b is a constant characteristic of a given component, Tb is the boiling point in OR at atmospheric pressure of the given component, and T is the temperature of the system in OR. This method of plotting K data is described by Hoffman, Crump and Hocott.l The straight-line equation of the log Kp - F plot is log hp = log Kop +BFi, where Kop is at F =0, i designates the component, and B is the slope of the line. qualitative picture has been developed to describe the oxidation behavior of TaSi2-coated tantalum and CbSi2-coated columbium. These systems have a significantly lower inherent oxidation resistance than MoSi2-coated molybdenum does. This stems primarily from the fact that Ta2O5 and Cb2O5 are nearly as stable thermodynamically as SiO2, whereas MoO2 or Moos are not. Further, diffusion of silicon in the Ta- and Cb-Si system is considerably slower than in the Mo-Si system. These ,factors prohibit the mechanism of selective oxidation of- silicon which accounts for the oxidation resistance 01- MoSi2-coated molybdenum. The silicide can be stabilized by adding suitable Modifiers which increase the thermodynamic stability of the silicate formed during oxidation. Modifiers, such as aluminum, can be inroduced into solid solution in the coating. in controlled amounts through proper selection of the source in the pack cementation process of coating fov~rzatiorz. Addition of aluminum to TaSi2, coatings on tantalum was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation resistance. EXTENSIVE experimental work and analysis have established the nature of the oxidation behavior exhibited by MoSi2- and MoSi2 -coated molybdenum-base alloys, and defined the conditions for maximum protection against oxidation of the substrate.'-* The oxidation resistance of MoSi2 in the temperature-pressure range of 1100°C-PO2 > 10-5 atm to 1900°C— PO2 > 10-1 atm is due to the formation at the surface of a continuous film of SiO2 which results from selective oxidation of silicon. Under the prevailing kinetic conditions, this film is stable toward the molybdenum silicide with which it comes in contact. Initially molybdenum oxidizes also, but it forms volatile species. SiO2, however, nucleates and grows as a condensed phase. Once a continuous film of SiO2 has formed, the oxidation rate falls to that observed for the oxidation of pure silicon indicative of diffusion through the oxide film as the rate-controlling mechanism. This oxidation behavior is of course highly dependent upon temperature and oxygen pressure. Bartlett and Gage13 and Bartlett, McCamont, and Gagelb define precisely this dependence in terms of the oxygen partial pressures and silicon diffusivities required to support a stable SiO2 film. At low temperatures (near 500°C—the "pest" region) silicon diffuses too slowly to be selectively oxidized. Hence, molybdenum and silicon oxidize readily in proportion to their stoi- chiometry. At high temperatures and low pressure, SiOz dissociates to form volatile SiO(g), and a protective film cannot be maintained. Application of the MoSiz/Mo system is limited to temperatures below 1900oC, the eutectic between MoSi, and MO5Si3.5 The oxidation behavior of MoSi2-coated molybdenum is essentially the same as that outlined above with the exception that the MoSi2 is not in equilibrium with the molybdenum substrate. At the temperatures under consideration silicon will diffuse rapidly into the molybdenum eventually converting the coating to MosSi3.4 The rate constant for subsequent decomposition of Mo5Si3 into Mo3Si plus silicon, and/or the diffusivity of silicon through Mo3Si then becomes low enough to allow active oxidation of both molybdenum and silicon with subsequent degradation of the specimen. A stable silica film can be formed but at temperatures and/or oxygen partial pressures higher than those required with MoSi2 present as a source of si1icon.l, 4 Because of the similarity between the silicides of molybdenum and those of columbium and tantalum one would expect similar oxidation behavior for coatings in the respective systems. This is not entirely the case, however, as shown by the experimental results reported herein. Regarding tantalum and columbium disilicide coatings on tantalum and columbium substrates, respectively, the oxygen arriving at the surface of the coating partitions itself nearly equally between the metal and the silicon, and a two-phase oxide layer (Me2O5 plus SiO2) is always formed. The diffusion of silicon in the tantalum and columbium silicides is relatively slow, compared to that in the molybdenum silicides, which further enhances this equipartitioning of oxygen. Thickening of the coating during service by inward diffusion of silicon into the substrate is correspondingly slow, and the effective thickness of the coating at the roots of cracks and defects is only slightly changed providing high probability for premature coating failure. Furthermore, the SiO2 glass that is generated is not thermodynamically stable with respect to the coating. The metal silicide tends to reduce the SiO2 liberating either free silicon or SiO. The situation can be improved by suitably modifying the coating such that the stability of the protective glass which is generated during service is increased. Thus, selective oxidation of silicon and the modifying agent will occur, and the silicide coating will not tend to reduce the oxide layer. Modifying agents can be introduced into the coating by the pack cementation process. Using sources containing the modifier at controlled chemical potentials allows control of the coating composition. Partially substituting aluminum for silicon in TaSi2 coatings by forming a Ta(Si,Al)2 solid solution was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation protection.

A. Cook K.A. Grace's article advocates usage of the terms describing resources as defined by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Originally recommended in 1943, the terms were revised in 1976 and again in 1980. Mr. Grace further recommends that the term reserves should be severely restricted and that it should encompass mining and processing factors. The list of references quoted in the article does not, however, mention the study concerning reserves that was made over a period of almost four years by a joint Committee on Definitions. This committee was sponsored by three societies - the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Most of the detailed work was done by a working party appointed by the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. After studying previous definitions in the US as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and other European countries, the following definitions were proposed and accepted in 1974 by the SME board of directors. (Ore reserve definitions in Rhodesia, South Africa, or New Zealand were not mentioned as having been reviewed. Table 1 lists definitions from MINING ENGINEERING, July 1975. Notice in Table 1 it was mentioned, under Resources, that the definitions of reserves were recommended for the purposes of commercial evaluation. It was further stated that the terminology adopted by the USBM and the USGS, as released to the public, covering resources, was recognized as such. Mr. Grace also recommends that reserve calculations should allow for future losses in ore tonnage, ore grade, milling, and smelting. Unfortunately, it might take years to develop a prospect after it has been discovered. Mining methods have to be tested before being finalized in order to know what tonnage of ore is going to be lost, or how much dilution is likely to occur. The same problems are present in concentrating or in smelting. Operating mines usually know how mined grade compares with ore reserve grade. They can usually predict fairly closely what their final metal recoveries are probably going to be. It is, however, expecting too much to have to delay quoting reserves from say a recently drilled prospect. Any responsible mining geologist or mining engineer (or company for that matter) should state several things about an ore reserve calculation: that it is or is not a preliminary estimate only; that estimated grades have not been diluted to allow for a future, as yet unknown, mining method; that metal recoveries are or are not only tentative, based perhaps on drill hole samples only or on no metallurgical testing at all. [ ] Reserves of a partially explored prospect are always quoted when it becomes necessary to raise capital. If they are described as preliminary only (really just tonnage and grade estimates and not true "reserves") in addition to being accompanied by some of the items just mentioned, nobody is going to be misled. If, on the other hand, a report by a member of the SME or SEG is intentionally misleading, the individual must be reported and eventually disbarred from his or her society. To summarize, let us stay with the definitions of ore, ore reserves, and related terms as recommended and accepted by SME. I might add that on occasion I have used a fourth category in my ore reserve calculations, namely Geologically Possible Ore. This category is more or less the same as Inferred ore defined by the USBM and USGS. I have never given a grade to this category, which may be based only on geological mapping, geochemical sampling, or geophysical traversing. ?

INTRODUCTION Lac Minerals Ltd., a significant North American producer of gold and other metals for over three decades, recently completed the financing for its third discovery in an eight year period. From 1975 to 1982, three important gold deposits in Quebec and Ontario: namely Bousquet, Doyon and Hemlo, were located and tested by company geologists. When current development plans are complete, Lac will have injected $400 million into these deposits. A discussion of these projects and their financing reveals some extraordinary challenges faced by top mining management. Responses to these challenges developed by Lac management may interest executives planning to proceed with new North American gold or base metal mines. MINE DE BOUSQUET In 1976, we explored a property containing a large low grade surface gold deposit. The geologial setting was exciting and we tested recent rethinking about the volcanigenic genesis of gold and base metal occurrences. These ideas helped pus to persist in drilling a nearby conductor and 600,000 ton, 0.22 ounce/ton orebody was outlined. With gold at $Cdn.150 per ounce the feasibility was approved and work started February 1978. Availability of a company custom mill 35 miles away reduced our immediate capital needs to $8.5 million. First of all, understanding the geological significance of results at Bousquet was critical. Mine and surface exploration geologists at Lac are continually and closely working together to better understand the nature of gold deposits in the Shield. This management emphasis on both pure and mine geology meant that a much larger ore reserve could confidently be predicted. (A proposal to quickly develop and ship the ore to a nearby company mine was discarded.) Instead of designing just for the initial plan of 500 tons per day we therefore included headframe, shaft and hoisting capacity for 1,700 tons and provided a compartment for future shaft deepening. These prebuilt additions were welcomed within two years. The type of collaboration whereby surface and mine geologists make study and field projects of each other's problems sets the foundation for this predictive ability. At Lac, the traditional responsibility for and supervision of the mine geologist by the mine manager is modified by this collaboration. This adds interest and scope to the geologist's work and lets him think beyond production requirements. Besides such management considerations, dedicated, professional geologists with integrity and lots of practical experience are needed to plan successful developments like Bousquet. Second, projecting future bullion revenue was critical and our experience selling production for future delivery gave us a way to ensure that loan repayment at term would not be jeopardized by falling metal prices. Output from a single mine is often reduced or curtailed for numerous reasons, so "selling forward" is done best and with least risk by companies like Lac with more than one or two producing locations for that metal. At first, a forward marketing program was considered unwise, speculative and unorthodox by analysts and other producers. Declining markets in the early 1980s prolonged gold project capital recoveries however, and critics were better able to appreciate the usefulness of such a tool. The notion that gold miners shouldn't sell forward is rooted in the belief that long-run gold prices will rise as modern social theory implementation in democracies inevitably erodes currency values. Selling against this trend goes against this industry belief or "ethic" and is at odds with the company shareholder who expects the gold price to rise not fall. This study shows that in the presence of foam, gas and liquid flow separately through porous media representative of reservoir rock. These results were obtained by using tracer techniques to measure the flow of the gas and liquid comprising the foam. Foam does not flow through the porous medium as a body even when the liquid and gas are combined outside the system and injected as foam. Instead, the liquid and gas forming the foam separate as the foam films break and then re-form in the porous system. Liquid moves through the porous medium via the film network of the bubbles and gas moves progressively through the system by breaking and re-forming bubbles throughout the length of the flow path. The flow rates of the gas and liquid are a function of the number and strength of the films in the porous medium. There is no free flow of gas; i.e., no continuous gas phase. On the basis of these results, foam can be expected to improve a water flood or gas drive by decreasing the permeability of the reseruoir rock to a displacing liquid or gas. This improves the mobility ratio and thus the conformance of the flood. INTRODUCTION Foam is formed when gas and a solution of a surface active agent are injected into a porous medium either simultaneously or intermittently. During the past few years, several papers have been published on the subject of foam flow in Dorous media. Foam has been used successfully in the removal of capillary water blocks from producing formations.''2 The use of foam in gas storage reservoirs to reduce gas leaks and to increase storage capacity has been considered in recent years. Foam has also been investigated as an oil displacing agent,3-5 and as an agent to improve the mobility ratio in a waterflood.6-10 However, the mechanism by which the gas and liquid phases comprising the foam flow through a porous medium has nor been described adequately. Normally, when two immiscible phases (gas and liquid) flow concurrently through a porous medium, each phase follows separate paths or channels. At given saturations of the two phases, a certain number of channels are available to each phase, and as saturations change, the number and configuration of the channels available for each phase also change. The effective permeability of each phase is a function of the saturation of that phase only, and the flow of each phase can be described by Darcy's law. When foam is present, the effective permeability of the porous medium to each phase is greatly reduced compaced with permeabilities measured in the absence of foam.6,11-13 Based upon the observed flow of surfactant solutions and gas in capillaries, it has been concluded that the gas and liquid may flow separately or they may flow combined as foam. At least four mechanisms have been postulated to explain how fluids flow with foam present: 1. A large portion of the gas is trapped in the porous medium and a small fraction flows as free gas, following Darcy's law.9 2. The foam structure moves as a body; the rate of gas flow is the same as the rate of liquid flow. 6,13 3. Gas flows as a discontinuous phase by breaking and re-forming films. Liquid flows as a free phase.12 4. A portion of the liquid and gas move as a foam body while excess surfactant solution moves as a free phase.14 It also has been suggested that different flow mechanisms exist for high quality (dry) foams made from dilute surfactant solutions and for foams made from more concentrated solutions. The influence of an external stress and plastic deformation on the allotropic transformation of single crystals of a Co-30.5 pct Ni alloy was investigated. Experimental results were obtained from dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and optical and electron microscopy. The effects of stresses could be conveniently divided into three stress ranges. In range I, from 0 to about 400 g per sq mm, the specimens exhibited a multi-variant phase change on cooling and a considerable amount of retained cubic phase. In range II, from 400 g per sq mm to the elastic limit, hexagonal regions of a given orientation grew in size and the cubic phase disappeared with increasing stress level. In range III, just above the elastic limit, specimens transformed into hexagonal single crystals. It was found that plastic deformation, not applied stress, was the factor which determined whether a single-crystal product was formed. The observed macroscopic shear directions were mainly (112) on cooling, but the behavior was more complicated on heating under stress. To explain these properties of the phase change, a model based on the nucleation of partial dislocations is proposed. IT is well-known1 that, on heating, hcp cobalt transforms into an fcc arrangement by shearing on close-packed planes. The crystallographic orientation relationship of the phases is as follows: the habit plane is (OOO1)hcp ?{lll}fcc and a (1010)hcp direction is parallel to a (112)fcc direction. The temperature at which the transformation occurs in pure cobalt is around 420.C 1,2This temperature decreases with increasing nickel concentration: and at about 30 pct Ni it reaches room temperature. However, many of the transformation characteristics remain essentially the same, particularly the crystallographic features.495 A convenient way of studying the transformation is to alloy cobalt with nickel, thus avoiding the difficulties of doing experiments at the high temperatures needed to transform pure cobalt. Due to the hysteresis of the transformation it is possible to choose a Co-Ni alloy with an Ms temperature below room temperature and an A, temperature above room temperature. Either structure of such an alloy could then be studied at room temperature, depending on whether it had just been heated or cooled to room temperature. The choice of nickel is further favored by the small difference in lattice parameters between cubic cobalt and nickel and the similarity of their physical, chemical, and electronic properties. Co-Ni alloys are reported to have neither long- nor short-range order.6 The main purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of an external stress on the transformation characteristics of Co-Ni single crystals. It may be expected that slip, twinning, and transformation should have many features in common in cobalt, because the (111) planes of the cubic phase operate as slip planes when plastic deformation by slip occurs, they are the twinning planes, and they are the habit planes for the transformation. Many previous investigators7-&apos;6 have concluded that dislocations must play an important role in the nucleation and propagation of the transformation, just as they do for slip and twinning propagation. An external stress will affect their motion, and a study of its influence should yield further information about the atomic mechanism of transformation. The present work extends that of Gaunt and christian17 and Nelson and Altstette18 in both qualitative and quantitative effects of stress. The basic concept underlying all the present theories of the transformation of cobalt and Co-Ni alloys is the motion of a/6<112> partial dislocations over {1ll} planes of the cubic lattice. The ABCABC... stacking of the close-packed planes of the cubic phase can be changed into the hexagonal ABABAB... stacking by the sweeping of an a/6 <112> partial on every second plane. Twinning, on the other hand, requires a shear of a/6 <112> on each close-packed plane. The reverse transformation can be effected in a similar way by a/3 (1010) dislocations moving over every other basal plane of the hexagonal phase. Transformation theories2, 7- 12,14 differ in the details of the nucleation of the transformation and the propagation of the partial dislocations from plane to plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nickel and cobalt rods supplied as 99.999 pct pure were induct ion-melted together under a vacuum of about 10-5 torr in a 97 pct alumina crucible. An alloy containing 30.5 pct Ni was found to have the desired transformation range, with an Ms near -10°C and an j4s in the vicinity of +10O°C. The ingots were swaged to &--in. rod and electron beam zone-leveled in a 10-6 torr vacuum. This procedure resulted in 12-in.-long single fcc crystal rods (designated I to VII) from each of which several tensile specimens of identical orientation were made. Chemical analysis of the bar ends indicated no contamination or gross segregation and no micro segregation was seen in electron micro-probe scans. Tensile specimens with a 9/32-in.-sq by 1-in.-long gage section were spark-machined from the rods and then electropolished or chemically polished to remove the machining damage and to provide a flat surface
