The power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

THE first discovery of zinc 011 the property now worked by this company was made by the celebrated mineralogist, Prof. William Theodore Rapper, in 1845. Different claimants kept the property in continual litigation till 1861, when everything was satisfactorily settled by the purchase of the land by the company, who have worked it ever since. The mines are situated in a valley, four miles south of Bethlehem, Pa., in Lehigh County. The valley is from two to three miles broad, and is bounded 011 the north and south by syenitic hills. Syenite underlies the valley, and upon this is deposited the Potsdam sandstone, then a layer of slate, and, finally, a dolomitic limestone, belonging to the Chazy or Black River formation, in which the zinc deposits are inclosed. The rocks occur in folds, and have evidently been subjected to tremendous pressure from below, the zinc deposit being found in an anticlinal axis, in nearly vertical veins. THE anthracite-producing region is in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania, and has an area of approximately 484 square miles. It is divided geographically into three separate fields, known as the Northern, Middle and Southern. The Northern field, with Wilkes-Barre approximately at its center, is a basin about 60 miles long and almost 6 miles wide at its greatest distance across. Generally speaking, it may be said that the coal meas-ures in this field lie horizontally, or on slight pitches, and consist of from 11 to 19 veins of coal, varying in thickness from several inches to several feet. The intervening strata between veins may be composed of slate, clay, rock or shale, or a combination of several, and are sometimes very thin. This condition often causes a treacherous roof, therefore roof sup-port and the attending hazard of mining are problems of concern. The Middle field is made up of a number of small basins of not very great depth, and the measures, which are in like number to those of the Northern field, are varying inclinations running from nearly flat to steep pitches.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may he what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

With the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, the direction of the main concentration of effort of the United States was changed. In order to win the war, all industrial efforts had to be organized and centralized. With the war won and peace in sight, this centralization of effort stopped and the full play of individual initiative was allowed to resume its sway in the community. During this period of reversal of direction of effort, there was a natural loss of momentum and the United States, as well as the rest of the world, is in for a period of readjustment. The immense progress that was made in one direction under the stress of the necessities of war, which focused the energies of a nation in one direction, is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished if a community with many varying interests can be united on one objective which it desires to attain. The realization that the fusing of many interests into one stream of effort is difficult should not prevent us from taking the long view ahead that is necessary in order to be able to measure the progress made. If we don't have a mountain peak to guide us, we are very likely to run in circles in the plain without reaching the goal to which we strive. The most efficient development of natural resources is an ideal that, from a material point of view, appeals to the engineer. In fact, at the rate things are developing Down Under and Out Back, what with professional prospecting teams crisscrossing the continent under the direction of professional exploration management, Australia may one day find itself as the world's greatest storehouse. Whereas Necessity may be the Mother of Invention, Consumption is surely the Mother of Exploration. At least this is true in Australia of today. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.

A technique for studying the mechanism of the froth flotation process in which continuous froth removal does not take place but, instead, an equilibrium is reached between froth and pulp is described. A flotation cell, specially designed to facilitate equilibration, and froth and pulp sampling procedures are described. The main advantage of the technique is that the ability to measure the steady-state froth height allows froth-stability effects to be separated from pulp-process effects. In the flotation of hematite front quartz, linear relationships are found between airflow rate and froth height and between airflow rate and the ratio at equilibrium of mass of values in froth to mass of values in the pulp. A simple mechanistic interpretation of these results is given. It is suggested that froth-stability effects may play a more important role than hitherto allowed. In particular, the way in which concentration and size distribution of gangue particles may affect overall flotation rate is shown.

Computer simulation of mine ventilation system is rapidly becoming an essential tool in mine planning and design. This Paper examines the utilization of ventilation simulation techniques to evaluate the number, shape, size and layout of mine entries in a typical coal mining system. Since the mains and sub-mains serve primarily for transportation and ventilation and the ventilation system is critically important to the health and safety of the workers, there exists a great need for optimal designs in this area. Evaluation criteria could include, among others, minimization of power costs, shaft requirements and leakage. Constraints of this optimization problem include health and safety regulations and production and mine infrastructure requirements.

MODERN mine maps are largely a product of evolution. The first mine maps used in the west were old composite maps with all the levels plotted on the same sheet. The composite was widely used and occasionally is seen even now. This type of underground map had serious limitations. One was the development of an indecipherable complex of workings around steep shafts. The other limitation was that of size; often when a working passed the limit of the sheet no map was made of it. These old maps have been superseded by the single level maps, laid out in squares or rectangles which can be expanded indefinitely in all directions. This produces a system capable of unlimited expansion in three dimensions, with all the detail of every working clearly marked and legible. A good set of mine maps should be laid out in blocks, all blocks of equal size. Each block should be limited by plane coordinates without overlap on bounding map quadrangles. At all times the direction of North should be indicated as an aid in remembering bearings of underground workings. It is desirable that all maps of whatever scale be plotted on sheets of uniform size. In fact, it is possible to make nearly all underground maps, surface maps and sections on sheets of the same size.

was investigated by reacting thin discs of calcium oxide with gas mixtures of CO2, CO, and Son. Its value was 19,300 * 300 cal independent of temperature in this range. No solid solubility of sulfur in calcium oxide was detected within the limits of the experimental method and it is estimated to be below 0.025 pct by weight. The importance of lime in desulfurization is well-established but complete information on the pure phase equilibrium: CaO + 1/2 s2 = CaS + +02 [11 is not yet available. The goal of this work was to evaluate solid solubility of CaS in CaO and to determine the free-energy change associated with Reaction [I] at temperatures of 1400" to 1650°C. The equilibrium constant for Reaction [1] can be written: It is convenient to rewrite Eq. [2] in the form: where A = {Ps /PqJ1'2 has been referred to' as the "sulfurizing power' of a gas mixture. In this work, thin discs of CaO were suspended in a vertical tube furnace and exposed to CO + CO2 + SOz gas mixtures having known values of A. The samples were then analyzed for sulfur. As expected, X-ray diffraction confirmed that CaS was the only sulfur-bearing phase formed at the relatively low oxygen pressures used. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Reagent-grade CaCO3 was pressed in a 3/8-in.-diam pill die and prefired in air to produce CaO discs weighing between 0.004 and 0.01 g. Several discs were used to provide a suitable weight for chemical analysis while maintaining a large surface area to react with gas mixtures. These were placed in a platinum mesh basket and suspended in the gas stream in the hot zone of a vertical tube furnace. Desired gas mixtures were prepared from cp grade CO and CO2 and anhydrous grade SO2. The method of soap bubble displacement was used to calibrate capillary flow meters. While this gave excellent results with CO and Con, some problems with bubble insta- bility and soap film "drag" arose with the use of SO2 at low flow rates. Hence, frequent sampling and analysis of gas mixtures was carried out to insure proper control of the ingoing SOZ. The furnace used for gas:solid equilibration was a vertical mullite tube externally wound with 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh wire having a diameter of 0.028 in. An inner tube of $ in. ID served as the reaction chamber having Pyrex ground joints sealed to the mullite to provide gas-tight connections at top and bottom. A Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple was inserted into a protection tube adjacent to the sample basket to measure sample temperature during a run. Constant-temperature control to 2C was observed at any desired set point within the range of this investigation. This was accomplished by a control thermocouple imbedded in the furnace windings which served to actuate an electronic controller wired for high-low operation. The sulfur analyses of the solid samples were carried out using a stoichiometric combustion technique based on the method of Fincham and Richardson. Some analyses were done using a modified evolution method3 but these were used primarily to check the results of the combustion method. The results were in good agreement but the combustion technique of-ferred an advantage in economy of time and material. CALCULATION OF GAS EQUILIBRIA Heating a given mixture of CO + CO + SO2 to high temperatures gives rise to a large number of product species. The details of calculating the partial pressures of these products of interaction and dissociation can be found in several references4,5 and need not be repeated here. The thermodynamic data selected for the major species in the gas mixtures are shown in Table I. Equilibrium constants from these reactions were combined with oxygen, carbon, and sulfur balances and a computer program written to facilitate the calculations. Some early difficulties in reproducing experimental results were finally traced to the effect of atmospheric pressure changes. No reference to consideration of this question had been found in the

10.3-1. Introduction. Equipment replacement or maintenance is of major concern to every company today. It can be the difference between an efficient and profitable operation or an inefficient and struggling one. Mining equipment, as everyone knows, will not last forever. Some equipment becomes obsolete before it wears out while some may be doing its intended job, yet not economically. It is a major problem for management to make the decision as to whether a piece of equipment should be repaired or replaced. There are numerous approaches to this problem; using formulas, charts, and graphs. These would be very good if all conditions were stable. Since conditions and requirements are constantly changing, an accurate observation cannot be derived from a set formula. A formula does, however, serve as a reminder to include most of the items that should be considered when evaluating old and new equipment. In the field of mining there are several questions which enter into the reasoning that are difficult to put into an equation. Some of these are: 1. Will the present equipment produce the required output of the mine, or an increase if necessary? 2. Are reserves adequate to support the purchase of new equipment? 3. Can the old equipment be repaired to efficiently continue the mining operation? 4. What is the stability of future markets for the product? Depreciation rate, or the write-off life, is a factor that can directly effect decisions on replacement. If the initial life expectancy is too long and the price of equipment is not written off when discarded, then the original investment has not been recovered. If the write-off time is too short, then the equipment is written off before replacement is even considered. In this case, the depreciation accrual is usually used to finance some other phase of the operation. In view of the increasing prices, the amount of depreciation fund is generally too small for much incentive to replace an older unit

In addition to uintaite, the Uintah Mountains contain a deposit, or vein, of the peculiar hydrocarbon mineral, to which I have given the name wurtzilite, * in honor of the chemist, Henry Wurtz, Ph.D., of New York, who, in 1865, described grahamite, and who has added to our knowledge of the composition of the hydrocarbon minerals. Wurtzilite and uintaite are very similar in appearance, but are very different in their physical and chemical properties. Both are black, splendent and shining in fresh fracture; but the wurtzilite has a decided toughness, and a degree of elasticity, especially when warmed, which suggests to some persons a resemblance to caoutchouc. It was at first, at Salt Lake, believed and reported to be a mineral form of India-rubber, and great expectations of its value as a substitute for crude rubber were indulged in. It was, however, found that it would not act like rubber with sulphur; it would not incorporate with it and become "volcanized," and it was very refractory and insoluble in the ordinary solvents of rubber and of uintaite. The elasticity, though unlike the elasticity of rubber, led to the reference of the mineral to the species elaterite, the only name under which an elastic bitumen is described in the mineralogies; and it is so called in the list of the mineral products of Utah, given in the last message of the Governor of the Territory. The name elaterite, as used by Dana, covers at least three differing substances, ranging in specific gravity from 0.905 to 1.223. Two of the varieties are soft and elastic, much like India-rubber, and one is occasionally hard and brittle, imbedded in the softer kinds. All are rare, and comparatively unknown, and not generally represented in mineral collections. One of the varieties referred to here is the subterranean fungus from Derbyshire, described by Lister as early as 1673.

Limestone replacement and contact metamorphic orebodies are 80 irregular that sampling and estimating are far less. exact than in more regular types of deposits; both the mineralized masses and the lenses of ore within them are extremely irregular. So much development work is required to find the ore that the expense of blocking out great tonnages is prohibitive; furthermore, the rock near these orebodies is so heavy that drifts or raises cannot be kept open for many years without excessive repairs. As a result, few mines in limestone have more than three years supply of ore in sight. As most of the ore, is developed by stoping— not by drifting, raising, or drilling—estimates of ore developed do not indicate the total amount of ore that may be expected; they simply indicate the relative condition of the mines. But even if they are to do this, they must be made according to a fixed plan, intelligently carried out. The estimates of ore in the Calumet & Arizona Copper mines, Warren District, Ariz., have been of much value to those who plan the mining and development work. This paper describes the methods of sampling and estimating used in these mines. Sampling Samples are taken in various ways and depend on the condition of the working and the purpose for which the sample is to be used. Drifts, crosscuts, and raises are sampled by channels or by taking a grab off each mine car as it is filled. Stopes are usually sampled by drill holes or by taking a representative sample off each mine car; the latter, or chute, sample is by far the best sample. All workings are studied periodically by an engineer, who makes graphic and detail notes of the geologic structure, as shown in Fig. 1. The daily car tally and assay of each particular working is added to the same sheet opposite the material it represents. These sheets make a permanent record, showing the exact boundaries as well as the grade of ore in all workings.

This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of the efficiency of water-solvent mixtures in recovery of oil. These mixtures may have the high displacement efficiencies characteristic of solvent floods and the high sweep efficiencies characteristic of water floods. Thus, the water-solvent process may increase the number of reservoirs in which a miscible-type displacement can be used profitably. The experiments on the use of water-solvent mixtures for recovery of oil were conducted to find the general applicability of the process. These studies demonstrated that, in flowing through sands, water and solvent segregated into a solvent layer on the top and a water layer on the bottom rather than flowing through the sands as a uniform mixture. Calculations based on the simultaneous flow of the water and solvent in layers were used to predict the effective mobility of the mixtures and the optimum operation of the process in steeply dipping, homogeneous reservoirs. As most reservoirs are not suited for the operation of the process under ideal conditions, experimental studies were conducted with sand-packed models scaled to represent more realistic reservoirs. These studies included the effects on recovery of oil of rate of injection, viscosity of oil, variations of permeablity within a formation and variations in water-solvent ratio. For the range of con-ditions studied, higher recoveries of oil were obtained with water-solvent mixtures than with water or practical volumes of solvent alone. INTRODUCTION A group of intriguing—because of their great possibilities—new oil recovery methods at the disposal of the petroleum engineer are the miscible displacement processes. These processes (high-pressure gas drive, en-riched-gas drive and LPG bank driven by methane) displace all of the oil from the portions of the reservoir swept by the injection fluid. The key question confronting the engineer applying one of these techniques to a particular reservoir is, "What fraction of the reservoir can be swept by injection of a practical volume of solvent?"." Intensive laboratory studies have been made during the past several years in seeking answers to the question of the sweep efficiencies which can be expected in solvent floods.' - These studies provided the answer that low-viscosity, low-density solvents channel and by-pass oil in sands with no dip. In horizontal sands, solvent flooding becomes less efficient as the viscosity of the oil increases, the recovery of oil at solvent breakthrough decreases and larger volumes of solvent are required to achieve a given recovery. More efficient displacement of oil by solvent is observed under certain conditions in sands with dip.".' If the permeability and dip of the sand are sufficiently high, gravity segregation of low-density solvent injected updip can prevent channeling. At rates of depletion below a critical rate,"." no channeling occurs. Unfortunately, in many reservoirs, the critical rate is so low that production of oil at rates below this rate is not economically attractive. And at rates over four times the critical rate, channeling is almost as severe in sands with dip as in horizontal sands. These findings pointed out that, for solvent floods to be generally applicable in recovering oil from all types of reservoirs, new methods of improving their sweep efficiencies are needed. Simultaneous injection of water with the miscible fluid was suggested by Caudle and Dyes7 as a method for improving sweep efficiencies. They theorize that water flowing with the solvent would decrease the effective mobility of the solvent and cause it to contact more oil sand. If, indeed, the water and solvent flowed as a uniform mixture, the process should have the advantages of the high displacement efficiencies characteristic of miscible floods and the high sweep efficiencies of water floods. Thus, the method (at least in theory) would greatly increase the number of reservoirs in which miscible-type displacements would be feasible. The productivities of many hydrocarbon-bearing for-rnntions appear to be reduced during drilling, completing and repairing operations. The reason for these othcarwise unexplainable low productivities may be a drastic reduction of formation permeability immediately surrounding the borehole. A possible cause of the reduced permeability is swelling and dispersion of clays present in porous media when contacted by fresh water or mud filtrates. Hence, the invasion of fresh water or mud filtrate into hydrocarbon-bearing formations that contain clays may cause low productivities as a result of formation damage. Present laboratory investigations have yielded results which supplement existing literature on formation damage. An expanded-type clay, montmorillonite, way found in hydrocarbon-bearing formations not previously analyzed. When sand columns and formation cores containing montmorillonite were contacted by fresh water, their oil permeabilities were reduced. This reduction in oil permeability way restored partially but not completely by a repair procedure, i.e., flooding with kerosene containing organic agents or flooding with water containing electrolytes. Hence, where montmorillonite is present in formations, prevention of formation danzage was indicated to be the only complete solution to the problem. To prevernt formation damage, results suggested use of an approximately 1 per cent solution of calcium chloride or stronger solutions of sodium or potassium chloride. In conventional rotary drilling operations the wall of the hole is exposed to drilling mud for days, weeks, and in some instances for as long as several months. During this time, drilling mud filtrate seeps slowly into formations surrounding the hole. The permeability and stability of many formations, especially those containing clayey materials, are impaired by the mud filtrate. Often interaction between the mud filtrate and the formation causes drilling and production difficulties. Serious reduction in productivity of oil and gas formations during drilling, completing and repairing wells has been noted often in recent years. Cases are known of development wells which produced only small volumes of fluid upon completion. However, after a period had elapsed, they began to produce oil or gas in commercial quantities. In other cases, results of drill-stem tests taken during the drilling of deep wells have indicated good production should be obtained from shallow formations. Later difficulty has been experienced in obtaining production from these shallow formations which had remained in contact with drilling muds for an extended time. In yet other cases wells have failed to attain the productivities expected from previous performance after the use of drilling mud as a circulating fluid during workover operations. It is evident from the field behavior cited that the productivities of certain oil- and gas-bearing formations have been damaged by exposure to drilling muds. This reduction in well productivity, called "formation damage", causes serious consequences. In development wells, expensive remedial operations are incurred. In wildcat wells, good formations may appear to be marginal or even non-productive. The importance of formation damage has been recognized by a number of investigators1-s who have considered the effects of fresh water, saline solutions and aqueous mud filtrates on the permeabilities of formations. A general conclusion from such studies is that interaction between water and formation clays reduces permeability of reservoir rock and that the permeability decreases as salinity of the water decreases. Data in these references, however, concern the permeability change with only a single fluid present. A more pertinent and direct consideration in the production of oil and gas from wells is the permeability change when two fluids, oil and water, are present. Recognizing this, Nowak and Kreuger2 and Bertness1" considered several ways in which mud filtrates and saline solutions caused reductions in the oil permeability of formation cores. Rock exposures are usually a very small part of the surface area in any mining district and the prospector and geologist must base their deductions as to the area, extent, and structure of various formations upon exposures that seldom form 5 per cent. of the area studied. Most often, outcrops form less than 1 per cent. of an area, so that exploration for mineralized contacts or mineral-bearing formations necessitates drilling, test pitting or tunneling, shaft sinking, and other underground work. In these days of high costs any method that will give definite facts regarding rock? obscured by soil or other material should be used to the greatest possible extent. In the early days of the Lake Superior iron districts, mines were located in the few places where ore was present in outcrops. Later, larger orebodies have been found, in depressions, obscured by soil and other foreign material. Mineralized rocks are oftentimes more weathered, softer, and more easily eroded than unmineralized rocks. It is quite natural, therefore, to expect that such orebodies (particularly where large enough to influence erosion in former physiographic conditions) should lie in depressions and be obscured by later debris. It is not difficult to believe that the history of the development of Lake Superior iron mining may be duplicated in other mining districts, that even larger orebodies than those first mined may be found in areas where the rock exposures, which led to original discoveries, are few or lacking. The chief properties of rocks that can manifest themselves through an obscuring cover are magnetism, electrical effects, radio-activity, gravity, and sound transmission. All of these have been used, to a small extent, to tell us a few things about what lies below the surface that we could not otherwise determine, but none has been used so long and so widely as
