Comminution energy is principally energy of deformation before breakage, which appears as heat. An empirical equation is presented which covers the entire comminution range. The new strain-energy theory considers comminution from the known principles of mechanics and the reduction ratio. Energy requirements according to the different theories are compared.

Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.' 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."

T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. DURING the Revolutionary War an iron mining industry was born in the Adirondack region of New York State. New York State ores provided the iron from which were forged the links of the chain that, strung across the Hudson River, successfully kept British vessels from ascending. The industry flourished for a while and then became dormant. For the successful prosecution of World War II, the magnetite mines were revived and given considerable aid in the form of government financial support. The complete story appeared in a special issue Of MINING AND METALLURGY published in November 1943. Now, almost four years later, it is interesting to see that these "war babies" were not really such but are well-established enterprises with a bright future. A ten-day trip through the Adirondack region and to St. Lawrence County dispelled all thoughts that mining in northern New York State is a transitory industry. In addition to substan-

I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. Having been appointed, on February 19th, 1890, a member of the Commission created by the Legislature of Pennsylvania for the purpose of investigating the " Waste of Coal Mining, with the View to the Utilizing of the Waste" (waste in this case referring specially to the small sizes of anthracite heretofore thrown away), my attention was naturally directed to the mash economical method of burning these small sizes.* Although I had been Familiar with the burning of anthracite for • many years, I found when I came to study the matter carefully that I was far from thoroughly understanding it, particularly with reference to the hurning of the smaller sizes, and that the literature of the subject, which was not very extensive, had more of a tendency to confuse than to enlighten me. I began therefore to investigate the subject so as to arrive if possible at some definite principles applicable to the question. With the aid of my assistant, Mr. John R. Wagner, I began at Drifton a series of experiments upon the burning of small anthracites. We first erected a small furnace with a grate 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, with which we experimented about two months. From the information thus acquired, we designed and built another furnace of about the same size, which gave us facilities for extending our investigations still further. After experimenting several months with the second furnace, we built a third one, which was much larger, having a grate area of about 68 square feet, which was exactly the size of the grate used in the boiler-plants of' Coxe Bros. &

This paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Pfoutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work, while connected with the station in one way or another. Lead Metallurgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In lead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that lead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the three years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of lead has been made: Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only lead. 2. Ores containing lead and silver or gold. 3. Ores containing lead and zinc, with or without silver. Sulphide Ores. 1. Ores of pyrite carrying some lead. 2. Ores of complex zinc-lead-iron sulphides. 3. Complex sulphides containing precious metals.

The high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,' in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. Shape and Size of Centrifugal Liquid Crucibles When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape of a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 1/2 in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. This plant was built in 1907 at the Bankhead mines to manufacture briquettes by the Zwoyer process under license from the Zwoyer Fuel Go., of New York, N. Y. The building was constructed to contain two units, each of a capacity of 10 tons per hr.; one unit was installed at the time the building was constructed, and the second unit is now being built. The coal used is an anthracite, which is more friable than that of Pennsylvania, and, as a consequepce, a larger percentage of dust or waste is produced, which was formerly thrown upon the slack-pile as waste, but is now passed to the " dust-bin " in the breaker, from which it is conveyed to the briquette-plant. An average analysis of the coal, published by Lewis Stockett and 13. R. Warden,' is as follows: Per Cent. The plant is run under two 12-hr. shifts, the force consisting of 1 superintendent for both shifts, 1 engineer for each shift, 1 briquetter for each shift, 1 helper for each shift, 1 laborer cleaning up for each shift. In the pitch-melting house, 2 men are on duty for one shift. The steam for the engine is furnished from a central boiler-plant, which also supplies steam for the breaker, the electric light and power-plant, machinery-shop, and boiler-shop. BRADEN, the most southerly of the three big Porphyries in Chile and the first to start production (in 1910), is a remarkable mine. It would be interesting to know just how much it has contributed, and will contribute, to the earnings of the Kennecott Copper Corporation, which acquired 95 per cent of Braden stock in 1915 by an exchange of shares and which subsequently obtained the remainder. Because of this complete ownership no separate annual report is published (as is the case with Anaconda's South American subsidiaries, Chile and Andes). Income, taxes, operating costs, earnings, and other financial data, including the balance sheet, are consolidated with corresponding items applying to Kennecott's manifold operations in the United States and other foreign countries. If Braden were in the United States it would be possible to arrive at a pretty accurate estimate of revenue realized each year from the sale of copper simply by applying the average published market price to the production as reported by the company. However, because of the restrictions on sales imposed by the Chilean Government and the almost fantastic regulation of exchange rates in the past, no estimate of the sort would be reliable. This point is illustrated by the following comparison made by Charles R. Cox, president, in Kennecott's report for 1955: In each year, 1954 and 1955, Braden supplied about 30 per cent of Kennecott's total copper deliveries; but Braden's operations contributed 16.7 per cent of consolidated net income in 1955 against only 6.2 per cent in 1954. The solubilily of lead in PbS as a funclion of lemperature has been investigated by means of Hall coej'icient (RH) measurentents OIL samples prepared by annealing and quenching Bridgman-grourz single crystals, which contain excess lead incorporated during /heir growth from the mell. For sufficiently long annealing times and sufficiently rapid quench rules, the samples obtained consist of n-lybe PbS snturated with In the semiconducting compounds PbS, PbSe, and PbTe, the point defects associated with the presence of lead in excess of the stoichio metric composition are shallow donors. The defects associated with the presence of excess nonmetal are shallow acceptors. lead at the annealing teuiperatiire, together luilh a dispersed second phase of lead microprecipitates. Due to the retrograde solubility of lead, the measured free carrier concentration (n = l/eR77) decreases with decreasing annealing tewperature (T) from- 2.4 X 10 em-3 for 1l85OK to 1.3 X 1018 cm-3 for 623°K. The dala are well-represented by the equation n =(1.08 x 102) exp[ - (0.37 ev.)/kT] cm-3 For most undoped samples of these compounds, the carrier concentration at room temperature and below is determined primarily by the stoichiometry, since the concentration of either excess lead or excess non-metal is large compared to the concentrations of intrinsic carriers and electrically active impurities. Therefore the dependence of composition in temperature and partial pressure can be investigated by means of Hall coefficient measurements, even though the deviations from stoichiometry do not exceed 0.03 at. G. R. GOHN. l-1n Table I11 of The Sager, Brown, and Mears paper, which was presented on the screen, data were given showing the results of accelerated corrosion tests of certain magnesium alloys. Mention was made that these were carried to a certain time which was used as a measure of failure but no mention was made as to the period of time. I would like enlightenment on that. G. F. SAGER (Author).-In reply to Mr. Gohn's question regarding the times of exposure for the accelerated stress-corrosion tests referred to in Table I11 of our paper, which shows the correlation between accelerated and atmospheric stress-corrosion tests on magnesium alloys, I can say that we usually run the accelerated tests on such alloys for at least 500 hr. We feel that this is long enough to reveal any marked susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking. In the case of the atmospheric tests on such alloys, we have not yet decided how long we should expose the specimens. Most of them are being exposed for indefinite periods and a good many of our specimens have now been exposed for several years. We may want to continue some of the tests for five or ten years. The period of six months mentioned in connection with the times of exposure for the atmospheric specimens was a rather arbitrarily selected minimum time for which specimens had to be exposed before we counted them with those that had not failed. The investigation of aluminum alloy systems prior to 1923 was severely handicapped by the low purity of the best aluminum available. However, by that time, the electrolytic purification of aluminum had been developed by the Aluminum Company of America,(1)† and in May, 1923, there was initiated, under the direction of E. H. Dix, Jr.,(2) a program for the investigation of the aluminum-alloy systems using the purest electrolytically refined aluminum. Up to the present time 15 papers (3) have been published, most of which are on the binary aluminum systems. Work is now in progress on the ternary systems, and it seems probable that most of the future work will be on ternary systems. Therefore this survey of the binary aluminum systems investigatcd up to the present time (the sixteenth paper of the series) concludes the first phase of this program. Certain qualitative relations between corresponding portions of the various binary diagrams as well as between different parts of the same diagram were noted some time ago by R. S. Archer.(4) In the present paper these relations and others are considered quantitatively by the application of well-known thermodynamic equations or by newly discovered empirical relations. No attempt will be made here to present the history of the development of the thermodynamic equations defining equilibrium or their application to metallic systems, although a list of references is given at the end of this paper for those who are interested in this phase of the subject. As part of a continuing study of intense energy effects on the earth, such as explosive cratering for Plowshare, large scale hydro- dynamic computer codes which numerically integrate the two-dimensional mass, momenta, and energy conservation equations have been adapted for use on geological materials. Experimentally determined nonlinear dynamic equations of state and constitutive equations governing material strength are incorporated into a two-material Eulerian code, DORF. With the use of this code, impact studies have been made of projectiles with arbitrary shapes in the r,z cylindrical plane normally incident on semi-infinite half-space targets. The impact of projectiles on rocks has been studied empirically and experimentally; however, this paper employs a theoretical approach. Particular examples selected involve the impact of aluminum and iron projectiles on oil shale at velocities of 0.5 and 1.0 cm/µsec. These studies offer a quick and economic means to edit quantities unavailable in an experiment and to independently study the effect of varying parameters such as material shape, density, and strength, and impact velocity. Results reveal early time agreement with experimental high-speed photography as seen in the bowl-shaped crater and spray. Initial impact pressures at the projectile-target contact are in close accord with the one-dimensional Rankine-Hugoniot relations for the impact of dissimilar materials. These equations require local continuity of pressure and particle velocity across the interface and were found to hold locally, quite independent of projectile shape. ALTHOUGH the firm in which the writer is a partner is not exactly the pioneer in the coring of rotary-drilled wells in Southern California, it has taken the lead in bringing coring to its present status. To the Shell Company of California belongs the, honor of having first used the core drill in its endeavors to locate subsurface structures west of Santa Fe Springs. Following those operations, similar work was done near Wasco in the San, Joaquin Valley. Results of the latter core drilling were successful, in that they made it possible to determine the under-ground structure. At, about the same time that the Shell Company was doing the work at Wasco, it was experimenting in the use of the core drill in connection with rotary-drilled holes. The oil sands in its dis¬covery well at Signal Hill were located by means of the rotary core drill. In 1921, in view of the trouble that the operators were having in the fields of Southern California, and particularly at Huntington Beach, R. E. Collom, of the State Mining Bureau, called their attention to the possibilities of the core drill for eliminating many of the serious problems that were facing them. It was this same difficulty encountered by the operator in locating the oil sands that caused the writer to enter into con-tract core drilling; late in 1921 the California operators became converted to the advantages of that method, and in the short space of one year core drilling in rotary-drilled holes has risen from a theory to an established practice.
