Tun mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic limestones of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft. the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances away from the zone of contact metamorphism.

PLATINUM and palladium are the most generally useful, most ductile and least rare members of the platinum family. They have many impor-tant applications in the pure state but for other applications it is fre-quently desirable to harden them and otherwise modify their properties by alloying small amounts of the other platinum group metals with them. These alloys are frequently required to withstand very drastic forming operations and to possess certain mechanical properties to fulfill specific requirements. For these reasons a knowledge of the tensile properties and annealing characteristics of pure platinum and palladium as well as their more useful commercial alloys is important to the user, and the fabricator. The present work was undertaken to fill this need. Rather brief (5 min.) annealing treatments were employed to render the data of maximum practical value and all tests were conducted upon 0.050-in. dia. wire, initially reduced 50 per cent in area by cold drawing, for the same reason. CONCLUSIONS 1. Pure (thermocouple grade) platinum reduced 50 per cent by cold drawing exhibits the following tensile properties: ultimate tensile strength, 36,000 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, 27,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 2.5 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 95 per cent. When fully annealed by treatment at 1100°C. its properties are: ultimate tensile strength, 20,700 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 30 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 93 per cent.

INTRODUCTION Cracks, crevices, holes, and fissures -- here collectively termed pores -- occur in all manner of substances in sizes from those evident to the unaided eye to those well below electron microscopic levels of detection. Naturally occurring materials having varying degrees of porosity are represented by wood, rock, soil, and mineral formations. Man-made materials that are porous include ceramics, sintered metals, catalysts, adsorbents, filters, and various compacted objects. The extent of their porosity greatly influences the hardness, rigidity, integrity, and general usefulness of such materials, and assessing both their pore volume and size is becoming increasingly necessary. Means by which this pore information can be obtained is the subject here. No attempt will be made to include all techniques and variations of them that have been suggested, but, hopefully, those of most general applicability will be described in sufficient detail to enable a potential user to judge their merit for a particular need. The results of pore measurements are made useful by relating them through other tests to performance criteria such as weatherability, water penetration, frost damage, oil recovery, strength, or thermal or electrical conductivity. These tests, of course, are outside the bounds for inclusion here. A pore is variously defined in dictionaries as "a minute opening", "a small interstice admitting passage of liquid", and "an interspace between particles". Clearly any object through which it is possible to find a continuous path from one side to the other either for a liquid or a gas must be regarded as porous. In my experience, perhaps the most interesting problems came up during the testing, prospecting, developing and equipping of the Chuquicamata and Braden Copper Mines in Chile, and it is proposed in this article to give as briefly as possible what some of those problems were, their solutions, and the decisions made as to the different methods to be employed. The romance of mining is still a great lure to the young man who is making a choice of a profession to follow. The thought of travel to strange and out-of-the-way places, the glamor of pioneer life, the excitement of discovery, the constructive work of building something, entirely "from the grass roots up," or of reconstructing a played-out property and making a success of it-all of these phases have a strong appeal and often influence the young man in the choice of mining as a profession. IT is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the .alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H: S. IT will be recalled that when educational instruction for the mineral industry began at Freiberg, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the original aim was to organize and systematize the procedures previously followed by young men in gaining familiarity with the technology then in use. There must have been many other ideas current, even then, as to just what a young man needed to learn in order to become capable of assuming responsibility for the supervision and direction of such technical work. The problem in Europe was decidedly different from that in nineteenth-century America, because some of the European mines were actually owned and operated by the governing authority and the others were supervised, regulated, and taxed by it. The American problem was the efficient performance of technical operations; the European one was regulatory supervision. It was natural, therefore, that in the development of educational processes in Europe stress was laid on those factors which conserved and protected the interests of the state. The study of mineralogy and geology, leading to correct judgments as to the workability and value of mineral deposits; assaying, which gave the means of quantitative measurements, as did surveying; chemistry, which furnished a better basis of understanding for assaying, mineralogy, and geology; and physics and mathematics, which are the bases for the understanding and efficient use of mechanical appliances, became the core of systematic instruction for the mineral industry. It was early recognized that men could learn more than was already known about all of these subjects and education took on that dichotomy which still characterizes it; the teaching of established knowledge to the unlearned, and that of extending of the bounds of knowledge, now loosely termed research, which after two and a half centuries of work still shows

AS a part of the general program on alloys of uranium carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under contract W-7405-eng-175 for the Manhattan Project during the recent war, it was considered desirable to investigate the boundary binary phase diagrams of the ternary alloy system uranium-tungsten-tantalum. Previous work on these alloys was practically nonexistent. A brief statement to the effect that tantalum and tungsten form a continuous series of solid solutions was found in a general paper on tantalum by W. V. Bolton1 but no information was available on the uranium-tungsten and uranium-tantalum systems. The research to be described in this paper has served to delineate the main features of the uranium-tungsten, uranium-tantalum phase diagrams and to check Bolton's work on the tungsten-tantalum diagram. Experimental Details Metals: The tungsten and tantalum used for preparing the alloys were 99.96 and 99.65 pct pure, respectively. The chief impurities in the metals were about 0.02 pct molybdenum in the tungsten, and 0.2 pct columbium, 0.05 pct tungsten, 0.02 pct barium and 0.01 pct silicon in the tantalum. The uranium used was 99.9 pct pure, with the main contaminants being iron and carbon. (An appreciable amount of magnesium was present in the uranium as received, but this distilled off during melting and so is not reported as an impurity.) The composition of specimens indicated in the subsequent figures and tables of this paper are the results of chemical analyses on the cast alloys except for the tantalum-tungsten alloys. WHEN, after years of troublous experiences in roasting sulfide ores with heavy dust and fume losses resulting from the equipment and methods first available, there appeared on the, scene of metallurgy that revolutionary process known as sintering, it was felt that at last there had been found the ideal method for preparing sulfide ores for blast-furnace reduction. Not only were the sulfides roasted but also the fine oxidized ores were bound together with them in strong porous cellular masses which were in the best possible condition for reduction. With the experiences gained in the manipulation of the Huntington-Heberlein, Carmichael-Bradford, and Dwight & Lloyd processes there developed a refinement of detail which brought the whole plan of roasting by sintering to a high plane of perfection. But that metallurgy is never stationary is revealed by the fact that changes in milling practice, particularly the development of flotation, have introduced a new set of problems in sintering itself. Inasmuch as it is felt that these problems have not yet been solved in an entirely satisfactory manner this paper is written to record the present practice of the Salt Lake Valley smelters with the hope that there will be brought forth such discussion as may perhaps lead to still better practice. By far the greater proportion of the sulfides smelted today are flotation concentrates. Usually they are high grade, sometimes as high as 70 per cent. and more in lead. They are extremely fine, many mills grinding the ore so that from 60 to 80 per cent. will pass through screens of 200 mesh. The physical condition in which many of these concentrates reach the smelters is disconcerting to the metallurgists. Some are of about the consistency of putty. Others are of a sticky, slimy nature. Others again, dried to the limit, are veritable powders. Remembering that the down-draft sintering charge for the best results must be porous enough to let air be drawn through it reasonably well, must be thoroughly mixed, and must have some coarse material in it to segregate out and form a layer on the grates, it will be understood that the advent of this extremely fine material has made necessary still further elaboration in the equipment and processes of preparing sulfides for the blast furnaces, all of which is expensive. The term potash refers to potassium oxide (K2O), a compound not found in nature or produced by man but used as a basis for comparison of all potassium compounds and now is applied generally to various compounds of potassium used by agriculture and industry. Potassium, the last of the three major plant foods to be used in appreciable quantities by agriculture, was originally produced only from organic materials for chemical uses. The first recorded identification of a mineral source of potassium was in 1797; but, until the discovery in 1839 of the large deposits of soluble potassium salts in Germany and their development in 1860-61, nearly all potassium compounds continued to come from organic sources. With the importance of potash to plant life discovered in 1840 by von Liebig and the production of potash in Germany after 1861, agriculture soon became the major consumer of potash. In 1958 agriculture accounted for about 95 pct of the total potash consumption; the chemical industry used the remaining 5 pct. Mineralogy and Geology Potassium, an important constituent of the earth's crust, occurs in many forms in numerous rocks and minerals, including water solutions, but is not found in its native state. Twenty-five of the more important potash minerals are listed in Table 1. The properties of the five potash minerals most common in Permian salt formations follow: Sylvite is isometric; has a hardness of 2, a specific gravity of 1.98, vitreous luster, and cubic cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to brick red. In taste it is similar to halite but has a sharper taste and a cooling effect on the tongue. It is very plastic under pressure. Langbeinite is isometric; has a hardness of 4, a specific gravity of 2.82, vitreous luster, conchoidal fracture, and no cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to gray. The hydrometallurgical processing of an impure zinc oxide fume is described. Flowsheet includes roasting for fluorine elimination and countercurrent leaching to produce a neutral sulphate solution. This solution is combined with zinc sulphide leach solution for subsequent purification and electrolysis. Novel to the neutral leach step is the use of automatic pH control. THE electrolytic zinc plant of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. was erected in 1929-1930 to process zinc sulphide concentrates produced from ore mined at Flin Flon, Manitoba. Since 1930, production of high purity slab zinc has been continuous. In May 1951, construction of a fuming plant was completed and operations were started to recover zinc from copper smelter reverberatory slag. A second zinc-bearing material in the form of an impure zinc oxide fume was then made available for treatment. Coincident with the construction of the fuming plant, additions were made to the electrolytic zinc plant to recover the zinc in the fume as slab metal. The original plant capacity of 70 tons of slab zinc per day was steadily increased up to May 1951, at which time the daily production averaged 130 tons. With the advent of the fuming plant and the processing of zinc oxide fume, production was stepped up to the present capacity of 190 tons per day. Of this, approximately 48 pct is contributed by the processing of zinc oxide fume. This additional source of raw material has allowed a 20 pct cutback in mining and milling operations, thereby adding considerably to the life of the Flin Flon mine. Zinc sulphide concentrates are treated by the usual hydrometallurgical method. Details of this operation and plant were described by Carr and Reikie in 1935' and Kent in 1951.8 The impure fume is treated in two operations. First, it is roasted to eliminate fluorine. Next, it is subjected to a countercurrent leach with spent electrolyte to extract the zinc as a neutral zinc sulphate solution. During this leaching step, soluble impur-

The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense &o suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial mining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of alluvial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into Russia." The statement itself is not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward. Lounsbury says : One might fairly infer from the way in which it [newspaper English] is often spoken of that with the steadily increasing circulation of this sort of periodical literature there is no hope whatever for our speech. "Of that with" is lamentable. The construction is thoroughly bad, and it is bad mainly because the misplaced prepositions have tangled the meaning. I suggest:

When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation. It is instructive to consider the implications of these two principles for two extreme cases of material behavior between which the actual behavior of rock must lie, namely, the behavior of a fluid and the behavior of an elastic solid. For the purpose of analysis in this paper, an underground excavation is defined as an excavation in which the smaller horizontal dimension of any open void at a particular horizon is less than the depth of that horizon below surface. In the case of a fluid, any unsupported excavation would fill immediately, as a fluid cannot sustain shear stresses. For the same reason, stress concentrations could not arise and the forces across any plane would necessarily be the same before and after excavation. Accurate ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fineness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by misuse, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to be actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

IMPINGEMENT attack, as one of the types of corrosion suffered by condenser tubes, has been given a prominent place in corrosion literature of recent years. It has been reproduced and studied in carefully controlled laboratory tests. Much has been learned of its mechanism, and of the effects of variables such as temperature, amount of air, size of bubble and water velocity. Incidentally the technical public has been given comparisons between the behavior of some few metals under various conditions of impingement attack. The tests recorded here were undertaken in an effort to find at least some sort of qualitative answer to questions which arose occasionally as to the relative resistance of various alloys to impingement attack, and which could not be answered by reference to the literature. The final decision to start work on the problem was influenced in large measure by the nature of the water available in this particular place. The mill of the Bridgeport Brass Co. is located on the Pequonnock River at Bridgeport, Conn., within two miles of its mouth. The water is much like many other estuarine sources which are used in condensers, and which cause particularly severe corrosion. It seemed a most suitable water to use in such tests. As the work progressed an important seasonal variation was noted. The purpose of this note is to record this seasonal effect. The results of individual tests are given only incidentally.

History ILLINOIS has so recently attained the third place in the oil production of the United States that few realize its great importance, or are aware of its highly profitable character. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent. of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $30,000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.1 Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measure-ments performed.

PHYSICAL properties have been used for a long time in characterizing different kinds of coal, and physical properties, such as friability and slacking, have been included with chemical properties in grouping coals according to the widely used system of classification adopted by the U. S. Geological Survey. Nevertheless, the usefulness of physical properties for classifying the different ranks or kinds of coal has been limited because it has not been possible to express these properties in definite form as numerical values. Because of the present wide interest in the formulation and adoption of a satisfactory system of coal classification, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, has recently completed a study of the physical and chemical properties of approximately 100 different coals ranging from lignite to, anthracite. PURPOSE AND SCOPE For this investigation samples were collected in approximately 45 mines and prospects in Washington and 23 mines in other states. The following studies, in addition to proximate and ultimate analyses, were made of the samples: Determination of (1) friability, (2) slacking or weathering characteristics, (3) yield of products by low-temperature carbonization in a laboratory retort, and (4) agglutinating value. Most of the coals examined were subjected to each of the tests enumerated, but with coal of some ranks this was unnecessary in some instances, and in others it was not feasible to do the work involved.
