8.4-1. Introduction. Surface excavating is done on a continuous basis with a variety of machines: 1) trenchers and ditchers, 2) conveyor loaders, and 3) bucket-chain and bucket-wheel excavators (BWE). Surface mining is largely concerned with only the last two machines, although some of the conveyor-loader types are often used by contractors for large-scale earth moving, and the engineer should be aware of these applications. This chapter is restricted to discussing only the bucket-chain and bucket-wheel excavators, with special emphasis on the latter. Continuous digging with these machines is done with evenly spaced buckets on either an endless chain or on the periphery of a rotating wheel. The bucket-chain digger excavates and takes the material away from the face with the same machinery. In the case of the bucket-wheel machine, these two functions are separate. Material is excavated by the buckets and then flows in a continuous stream via a transfer to the conveyor system, which in turn transports it to the discharge point. The wheels are adjustable in rpm and mount 6 to 12 buckets of equal size. These are classed as celled, cell-less or semicelled. The digging ladders for both types can move simultaneously in the horizontal and vertical planes. Ladder control is similar to the operation of a bucket-line dredge. Some ladder-chain and all wheel excavators have the machinery deck and superstructure mounted on a 360° swing circle. Other chain diggers have a fixed machinery deck. Deep and/or high cutting models are available in either the chain or wheel excavator. Machines can be either rail or crawler mounted, but the trend is to crawlers. Many of the early ladder-chain, rail-mounted excavators have been converted to crawlers. These may be either of the single or bogie type, depending on the conditions. Large machines usually use the superior three-point crawler suspension.

Considerable attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current techniques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alternating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,s and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what typc of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effeet arises. The Tar-Sands" is the name which has been given to the extensive horizontal deposit of fine Cretaceous sand, blackened by tarry petroleum, which forms the banks of the last or lowest 130 miles of' the Athabasca river before it terminates in Athabasca lake. The Cretaceous strata, to which these sands belong, extend northwesterly from Dakota all the way to this lake and for 500 miles beyond it. The Athabasca river forms the uppermost section of the Athabasca-Mackenzie, one of the great rivers of the world. It rises on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains, westward of Edmonton, and flows north of east to a point called Atha-basca Landing, 100 miles north of Edmonton, where it turns northward and runs about 280 miles before it falls into the west end of Athabasca lake. The section of this river-system which discharges the lake just named into Great Slave lake, is called Slave river, and below the latter lake it becomes the Mackenzie river. Along the section of 280 miles of the Athabasca river above mentioned, the Cretaceous strata consist of bluish-gray and drab-gray marls, on top, from Athabasca Landing to Drowned rapid, 110 miles down stream; then heavily bedded gray sandstones, 225 ft. in greatest thickness, underlying these, form the banks for about 40 miles further. The strata appear to be horizontal, but they really dip very slightly to the southward. At Drowned rapid, we see the first of the tar-sands resting on almost horizontal beds of bluish-gray limestone of Devonian age. In some places the limestone is associated with shaly or marly bands. Notwithstanding the great hiatus between the two series, the horizontal tar-sands lie conformably upon the almost level upper beds of the limestone wherever the two formations are seen together, all along the river, throughout a

The Mississippi river was discovered by French explorers that came southwestward, by way of the Great Lakes, from eastern Canada. Vignan, Joliet, De Champlain, and others of the French pioneers in the first half of the seventeenth century, dreamed of a short cut to China by means of the great waterways they explored. In a geographical book published in London in 1726 by Daniel Coxe an account is given of "a new and curious discovery and relation betwixt the river Meschachebe [Mississippi] and the South Sea, which separates America from China, by means of several large rivers and lakes". Louis Joliet, a fur-trader, and Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, reached the Mississippi and paddled their canoes on its broad waters on June 17, 1673.* They descended the river as far as the entry of the Arkansas tributary, and then returned overland to Canada, being deterred from going farther south by reason of Indian hostility. Several years later Robert de La Salle, a French trader, starting from Quebec, went westward to Lake Michigan and thence to the Illinois river, which he and his comrades descended in their canoes to the junction with the Mississippi, and then followed it to the sea. They reached the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. Thus the great central waterway of North America was made known. These French-Canadian voyageurs, or boatmen, traded with the Indians for furs in the Upper Mississippi valley, and when in need of bullets they noticed the outcrops of lead ore, from which, probably in the last decade of the seventeenth

The authors enumerate the factors which appear, from their observations and practical experience of failure of aircraft components in Great Britain, to be responsible for causing a metal or alloy to fail by stress corrosion. The essential conditions for promoting failure by stress corrosion are: (I) tensile stress at the surface of the component, (either residual or applied), and (2) an attacking medium that may be a solution or a liquid metal. Particular attacking agents are effective only on certain metals. In all instances of stress-corrosion failure experienced, cracking of an intercrystalline form has occurred and examples of such failure in aluminum alloy, steel and copper alloys are described and illustrated. The relation between microstructure and stress corrosion is mentioned and methods of investigating the susceptibility to stress-corrosion failure of metallic materials are described. The precautions to be taken in selecting materials for particular aircraft components and the importance of adequate protection against chemical attack are considered. The authors have given a factual survey of stress corrosion and have made no attempt to advance any scientific explanation of the phenomenon.

Measurements of the amount of water flowing in many of the larger rivers of the west have been made by the United States Geological Survey, and by this means the daily discharges of these rivers have been computed for a period of over two years. These measurements have been confined mainly to that part of the country commonly known as the arid region, where the rainfall is insufficient for the needs of plants most useful to man, and the supply of water, not only for agriculture, but also for mining and all other purposes, falls below the demands made upon it. In such localities flowing water has a great value, for without it many industries are impossible. Experience has shown that in the western part of the United States, over an area a little less than two-fifths of the whole extent of the country, there are great bodies of fertile land enjoying a genial climate, and in every way adapted to the support of a large population, except in the one particular of water-supply. By utilizing the water available, portions of this rich land can be rendered valnable. In other words, the laud-values rest directly upon the prospects of a continuous artificial water-supply. The same is true of many mineral lands, which require for hydraulic mining, or for the supply of concentrating-works, stanip-mills, etc., a certain water-supply, and are impaired in value if this supply is inadequate or irregular. The pressure of this need upon the mining industry is not so widespread, or in the first instance so severe as upon agriculture; but as different regions become more thickly settled, and the two industries compete for a water-supply not sufficient for both, it, is probable that the miner will suffer. But he can snspend operations with less inconvenience than the farmer. Agricuitural land, if the watersupply is not continuous, becomes a desert; on the other hand, the profit of mining is greatly enhanced by the presence of agricultural

FIRES in heavily timbered mines are disastrous, involving danger to both life and property. Some mines have been completely ruined or so heavily damaged that reopening them would not pay. Though few mines are entirely free from danger of fire, the risk is minimized by proper care and good design of plant. The Tintic Standard mine is at Dividend, Utah, in the famous Tintic mining district, about 60 miles south of Salt Lake City. The development of the mine was begun in 1907 by the late Mr. E. J. Raddatz and his associates. From the beginning, the work was hampered by high rock temperatures and the presence of high concentrations of rock gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Development work was carried on with great perseverance for nine years, and resulted in the discovery of ore in 1916. The total production of the Tintic Standard mine to Jan. 1, 1936, amounted to 1,664,388 tons of ore, having a gross value of .$61,996,719.

By means of the C-Sic thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. Commercial Development of This Device Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, procedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; nevertheless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made, inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metallurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and financial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-Sic thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper. Soon after general use of stainless steels began, it was observed in practice that certain combinations of factors tended to induce corrosion by pitting. For most applications this was a serious drawback, not SO much because the structural properties of the metal were impaired but because of the rapidity with which heavy sections of the alloys were penetrated by small elongated pits. These pits seemed to initiate readily in oxidizing metal salt solutions like ferric chloride and in chloride solutions like sea water. It was observed that in sea water pitting was more frequent in stagnant or polluted waters than in highly aerated, moving waters. The steels in these chloride solutions were observed to be sensitive to long contact with material such as sand grains or attached barnacles. At points of attachment or contact it was not uncommon to discover initiation of corrosion. Pits once begun at contact faces were observed to grow rapidly, usually elongating phenomenally in the direction of gravity until the metal was perforated. Hydrochloric acid and other nonoxidizing acids, on the other hand, were observed to corrode stainless steels generally; the weight losses often were higher, but the penetration less than for the pitting type of corrosion. The causes of pitting, a type of corrosion recognized as characteristic not only of stainless steels but of many additional metals and alloys, are important in corrosion studies. A possible explanation bears practical significance, for once it is known why pits begin where they do and continue to grow after initiation, intelligent direction can be given to diminishing corrosion. This can be done either by some alteration in the composition and treatment or' the alloy or by some alteration in the environment. It appears foremost in importance to discover the nature of pit foci, for if initiation of pits can be discouraged their growth will be no longer a factor to be considered. In a multi-component alloy containing many impurities normal to production of such an alloy, each of which may play a part in pitting, and whose corrosion resistance is sensitive to heat-

The relation between the properties of electric logs and the fluid used in drilling a well is briefly discussed in this paper, and the fact that the resistivity of the drilling mud and its filtrate can appreciably affect such logs is shown. Apparatus was designed and a procedure established to determine the effect of various factors on the resistivity of drilling mud. Five muds commonly employed in California were tested and the following observations were made: I. The effect of raising the temperature from 80°F. to 180°F. is to decrease the resis-tiviiy of the mud or filtrate approximately 50 per cent. 2. The resistivity of the mud in most cases closely approximates that of its filtrate. 3, The change in the resistivities of muds caused by the addition of chemical is not the same function of the amount of chemical added for each mud. 4. The effect produced by increased sodium chloride content is to reduce markedly the resistivity of the mud and its filtrate. 5. Weighting materials, such as Baroid and limestone, tend to increase the resistivity of drilling mud. 6, Cement and counteracting reagents reduce mud resistivity. Introduction During recent years, the practice of "electrically logging9' a geologic formation by means of a system of electrodes lowered in a well bore has provided data of inestimable value concerning the nature of the sediments penetrated. Thus, it is generally possible, by means of electric logs, to distinguish readily the differences between shales, sandstones, cherts, limestones, and other rock forms. The distinguishing characteristics recorded in this manner have made possible long-range and closely detailed mapping and visualization of deeply buried structures1-5 to a degree not to be obtained with a reasonable expenditure of money by any other means at present in use. Besides being of value in correlation work, electric logs have been found, in some instances, to be useful in estimating the nature of fluid contained within the pores of a rock. In special cases, even the relative permeabilities at different horizons have been determined.6 That electric logs should reflect in some measure such physical properties of rocks as porosity and permeability and, in addition, give rise to data pertaining to the fluid content of rock interstices, becomes evident when the conditions giving rise to the electrical phenomena measured are known. However, it is not the purpose of this paper to review the present status of electric logging; rather, the reader is referred to the papers cited on page 220 for the principles and practice involved. The use of natural feldspathic rocks, as opposed to straight feldspar, for ceramic purposes is not new. "Cornwall stone," a semi-kaolinized granite containing fluorite, has long been used by the English pottery trade instead of feldspar, and "Carolina stone," a similar rock, is now being offered to the American trade. A recent report of the U. S. Bureau of Mines states that trachyte, a glassy volcanic rock, is being used in California instead of feldspar in ceramic bodies. In Germany, phonolite and basalt have been investigated, and possibly also used, as ceramic raw materials, and extensive research has been conducted in Russia in recent years looking to the utilization of the immense bodies of nepheline syenite of the Kola Peninsula, which is the host rock of the apatite deposits now being exploited on a large scale in the Murmansk region; the nepheline is recovered as a by-product of the concentration of the apatite. Long used principally as a raw material for the pottery and allied industries, where, in bodies, glazes, enamels, etc., it serves as a fluxing ingredient and forms, on firing, a glassy bond with the more refractory clay, flint and coloring particles, feldspar has been finding ever increasing employment in glass. In 1936, over half of the nearly quarter of a million tons of feldspar sold in the United States went to the glass trade. Its usefulness for this purpose is due to the resistance to thermal shock which it imparts to glass products, particularly bottles, containers and tableware, because of its alumina content, which averages from 16 to 20 per cent. Active search has been wade on the American continent during the past few years for other minerals of feldspathoid type, with comparable or higher alumina content, that, may be suitable for glass and other ceramic purposes. One of the most important results of this work has been the delimiting in central Ontario of large bodies of nepheline syenite of excellent, ceramic grade.

During the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,l,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. Problems One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3'4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. Instruments and Methods Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

This paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the heading-and-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading. In mines, the tunnels, drifts, cross-cuts, adits, etc., are usually of small diameter, hence the driving of headings applies to completed tunnels in mining-work, except, of course, in cases like drainage-tunnels and main entries leading into coal-mines, where conditions call for tunnels of large diameter, approximating those driven for railway-service. In building aqueducts the tunnels are driven from 6 to 8 ft. in diameter up to 15 or 20 ft., while in railway-service the dimensions vary from 18 to 30 ft. in diameter. There is no department of rock-excavation so difficult as that of heading-driving. This work also belongs to the most expensive class in rock-excavation. A heading is driven directly in the solid. There are no lines of lesser resistance towards which to direct the energy of the blast, but the material must be blown out by main force. The completion of the heading simplifies all the rest of the work of excavation. It is easy, for instance, to enlarge a heading either from above, below or on the sides, by breaking towards the open face through holes approximately at right angles to the axis of the heading; or the enlargement sometimes takes place by holes driven outside of the heading running approximately parallel with it, the rock

There has been developed at Latouche a rather unusual system of mining which, for want of a better name, has been called the "Latouche system of mining." It is a modified form of shrinkage stoping applicable to orebodies of large or fairly large size where the ground is such that timbering would not be required in stoping. Mention has been made of this method of mining by Birchll who gave no details as it had been in use only a short time and the final outcome undetermined. The system, however, has proved to be entirely successful and it is thought that a paper covering it might be of general interest. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the Latouche system a brief description of the property and the various mining methods previously used will be given. Location The Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corpn. is situated on the west coast of Latouche Island, in Prince William Sound, Southwestern Alaska, 45 miles east of Seward, the coast terminus of the U. S. Government Railroad. It is a regular port of call for ships on the Southwestern Alaska run. The island is about 12 miles long and 3 miles wide. A ridge of mountains runs the entire length with a maximum elevation of 2500 feet. Climate Latouche has to contend with possibly the greatest amount of precipitation on the North American continent. The annual average precipitation for the past 4 years has been 188 in., with 248 in. for the year 1926. A rainfall of 4 in. per day is not uncommon. In the winter the thermometer rarely falls below +20° F. and the snowfall is usually heavy during the months of March and April.

The Oklahoma legislature recently passed a bill providing for "the creation of an oil and gas department under the jurisdiction of the Corporation Commission, authorizing the Corporation Commission to appoint a chief oil and gas conservation agent, and conferring exclusive jurisdiction on the Corporation Commission in reference to the conservation of oil and gas, and the inspection of gasoline and oil, the product of crude petroleum, and repealing all acts or parts of acts in conflict therewith and declaring an emergency." Some of the functions of the new bureau include the receiving and filing of all well logs, and the direction and supervision of plugging all abandoned oil and gas wells, under rules prescribed by the Corporation Commission. The two leading petroleum-producing States of the country, Oklahoma and California, have now established oil and gas bureaus with a staff of inspectors to see that the important rules relating to the conservation of oil and gas are thoroughly enforced. The economic significance and the value of well logs in the conservation work has been recognized, and the necessary legal action taken to insure and procure them. William B. Heroy, of the Government Land Classification Board, in a personal communication to the writer, says that the drilling of wells is also regulated by public authority in the Roswell artesian basin in southeastern New Mexico, where a permit must be obtained for the drilling of any well and a certified log of the well recorded with a county official. The method is said to give fairly satisfactory results. In a recent article1 a National instead of a State Bureau was suggested for collecting and filing well logs. In discussing the paper, L. L. Hutchison characterized such a plan as impractical because the average driller or contractor will often juggle or guess at the log and will not keep the record sufficiently close or accurate, making it necessary to maintain a special man at each well for the sole purpose of obtaining

THE CONNECTING link between Phelps Dodge and the copper mines at Bisbee and Morenci was a Canadian-born mining engineer and metallurgist named James Douglas. Judged by almost any standard, Douglas was an extraordinary man. Like John Muir of the California red- woods, he had in his blood "the heather and bog juices of Scotland," and the rugged virtues of a singularly great race. His father, for whom he was named, was a graduate of Edinburgh University, a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, and a man of rash and adventurous spirit. Extremely catholic in his intellectual interests and attainments, he was unusually skilled in his profession, certain-sometimes to the point of disastrous stubbornness--of his own judgments and decisions, careless of life or fortune where duty or moral issues were involved, and always deeply moved by the sufferings and misfortunes of his fellow men. The Umgal a section of the We1gedacht Exploration Company Ltd., a member of the Rand Mines Group, is situated near Utrecht in the province of Natal, South Africa. Two coal seams, the Alfred and Gus, are mined to fulfill commitments to both inland and export markets. To increase extraction in the high quality Alfred Seam, pillar extraction, known locally as stooping, was introduced to the mine in September, 1980. Mining is a conventional cut-drill -blast operation and takes place under a unique set of geological conditions viz. moderately thick seam at 3.5 m; rapidly varying cover from 25m to 120 m; an overburden containing competent sandstone and dolerite horizons. In order to improve the understanding of the manner in which the pillar and overburden interact during pillar extraction, a largely visual system of monitoring backed up by roof-floor convergence measurements was employed. Preliminary analysis of the observations suggests that roof collapse or goafing occurs in three phases but is only initiated once a critical amount of convergence has taken place.

The laws here referred to are those which define the status of the prospector for mineral deposits in the soil or beneath it, establish his methods of procedure, protect him in his possession while searching for the subterranean treasures, and give him assurance of title when all required conditions have been fulfilled and valuable minerals discovered. Regulations for the operation of mines and the safety and health of mine employees are likewise subjects of Federal and State legislation, but are not within the scope of the present program. Various features of our present laws will be discussed in detail by able students of the subject, and specific remedies will be proposed for the most glaring defects. It is my purpose to present in this paper a summary review of the reasons why revision is needed and demanded by the great majority of those in daily contact with the industry. Reason Number One The first objection to the continuance of the present law is that it was not planned by its framers and the Congress which passed it to apply to many of the kinds of mineral deposits, nor to the mining conditions, which are controlled by it to-day. In 1866, under the title, "An Act granting the right of way to ditch and canal owners over the public lands, and for other purposes," was surreptitiously smuggled into existence our first mining law (14 Stats. at Large, Chap. 262, p. 251). This law provided that "whenever any person or association of persons claim a vein or lode of quartz or other rock in place, bearing gold, silver, cinnabar or copper, having previously occupied and improved the same according to the local customs or rules of miners in the district where the same is situated," etc., a patent might be granted an certain conditions.
