Some years ago we collated all laboratory data then available to us on the distribution at equilibrium of manganese and of sulphur between metal and simple slags, and used the results in setting up an equation, which proved to be in accord with determinations of the distribution ratio of manganese and of sulphur between liquid steel and open-hearth slag, over a wide range of operating conditions. We now present an outline of our calculations and inferences on these two closely related questions, which are of especial importance because of the advisability of conserving manganese wherever possible. In general, our results show that in the open-hearth furnace equilibrium between metal and slag, with respect to both manganese and sulphur, is substantially attained during the finishing period of the heat, or in about a half hour to an hour after any additions were made. This implies that the end result will be identical whether manganese is added as alloy or metal to the liquid steel or as oxide to the slag. The proportion of total manganese retained by the steel is favored: (I) by use of the minimum amount of lime, consistent with other operating limitations, required to give a lime-silica ratio of about 2.4, which usually corresponds to a minimum practical slag volume; (2) by a high concentration in the slag of MnO relative to FeO; (3) by high operating temperature. Absorption of sulphur by the slag from the liquid metal is favored: (I) by large slag volume; (2) by a high concentration of active (or "free") lime and of manganese oxide dissolved in the slag; (3) by low concentration of silica, iron oxide, and phosphate dissolved in the slag. Distribution 02 Manganese between Slag and Metal at Equilibrium On the basis that the distribution of manganese between liquid steel and slag is controlled by the reaction FeO + Mn -& MnO + Fe [A] slag metal slag metal the distribution at equilibrium, at a given temperature, is expressed by the equilibrium constant for this reaction, which is defined as K,, _ aMnO' afe aFeO ' aMn where a is the activity of the molecular species denoted by the subscript. The activity of each of the several components, although it is not known precisely, is approximately equal to the concentration of each component expressed as its mol fraction; that is, as the ratio of the number of mols of the given component to the total number of mols of all the molecular species present in the metal or slag, as the case may be. Moreover, since the activity, or concentration, of iron in the liquid metal is in fact substantially constant, the term afe may be combined with K" to give a new constant K'. Making these changes, 7

INTERNAL stress and season cracking in brass have been studied for many years and the technical literature contains many data on various phases of the subject. A résumé of the literature shows certain fairly well established points upon which various authors are mostly agreed: 1. Season cracking is primarily caused by the presence of relatively high internal stresses, or possibly in some cases by external stresses, or both. 2. A specific corrosion is also essential to season cracking: Certain agents, particularly mercurous salts, mercuric salts and ammonia salts; have such a specific corrosive effect. 3. The tendency to season crack under given conditions increases with increasing zinc content, brass containing less than 20 per cent zinc being relatively immune. 4. In alpha brass the season cracks are intercrystalline; in alphabeta brass they lie between the two constituents; and in beta brass they are transcrystalline. 5. The ordinary impurities or added elements in special brasses have little or no effect on the tendency to season crack. 6. Internal stresses can be eliminated, or at least reduced to a safe 'limit by annealing treatments at temperatures that do not produce visible microstructural changes or appreciable softening of the worked brasses. There are, however, some points in connection with the phenomenon of season cracking which have not been thoroughly investigated, or wherein different authors and investigators are not entirely in agreement. The investigations described in this paper were undertaken to determine: 1. The correlation between mercurous nitrate tests and actual season cracking on long-time atmospheric exposure. 2. The quantitative effect of type and degree of drawing operations on the intensity of internal stress and on the tendency to season crack in brass tubes. 3. The possibility of drawing high-brass tubes in such a manner as to prevent the occurrence of harmful stresses rather than to find a remedy for such stresses once having obtained them.

IN processing magnetic taconites several steps of crushing, grinding, classification, and magnetic separation are required to produce a 60' pct Fe concentrate. Usually the final concentrate is in a slurry form of 55 to 70 pct solids by weight and is further characterized by a particle size of 60+ pct —325 mesh. In taconite plants already completed or under construction the conventional method used to obtain pellets suitable for blast furnaces is to filter the concentrate slurry, ball the filter cake, and then harden the green pellets in a traveling grate or in a vertical shaft furnace. Large tonnages must be handled in minimum floor space, with reduced maintenance and lowest possible operating cost. Filtration must therefore achieve two objectives: I) high filtration rate—in terms of pounds of dry solids per hour per square foot of filtration area—at a low filtrate solids concentration, and 2) a filter cake moisture that will always permit efficient balling within the normal fluctuations of ' plant operating conditions. If moisture contents are too high, balling may be impossible or result in a mushy ball .without enough green strength for the firing operation. Development work has met these objectives. At low investment and operating costs, filtration rates of 250 to 600 dry lb per hr per ft2 have been attained for concentrates of 60' pct —325 mesh. By combining the disk-type continuous filter with proper agitation, the Agidisc filter produces a homogeneous filter cake, easily discharged from the disk sectors. This application provides the lowest initial cost per square foot of filtration area, minimizes floor space, reduces down time for changing filter media to a negligible factor, and simplifies process control and maintenance for the operator. It is now possible to predict very closely the taconite concentrate filtration rates for a wide variety of conditions—either by experience or with a few simple leaf tests. When balling and pelletizing operations began on a continuous basis, it became apparent that moisture content of the filter cake was a critical factor and must always be controlled by the filter operator below some maximum allowable value. Accordingly the Reserve Mining Co. and the Eimco Corp. joined in a study of the many variables affecting filter cake moisture content. The study was conducted at the Reserve Mining Co. taconite plant at Babbitt, Minn. To process plant tonnage the Babbitt plant utilizes a 6-ft diam Agidisc filter with six disks and an 8-ft diam drum filter with 10-ft face. However, most of the plant filter investigations were made on the Agidisc because of its superior performance. A considerable amount of small-scale test work was first carried out to study more closely the individual variables and ascertain their effect on filter cake moisture content. A general correlation method was then developed which allowed reasonable prediction of moisture content at any operating conditions. This step was made necessary by the fact that in full-scale filtering, operating variables usually interact to produce a combined rather than a singular effect. Studies were then made on the full-scale filters to prove the validity of the correlations developed, and past operating records were examined to ascertain whether or not significant variations could be traced to any single factor or to a combination of factors.

Much has been written concerning the hoisting equipment of various mines throughout the country, but most of the literature on the subject, if not all, describes equipment of extraordinary capacity and the small and medium-sized outfits have been neglected. The hoisting equipment here described is capable of handling about 1200 tons per day. It has not been worked to capacity, but 600 to 700 tons, together with men and materials, have been handled in two shifts without any great effort. Only one shaft extends from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine; see Fig. I. It is composed of three compartments, two of which are used for hoisting, and the third for water, air, and electrical lines, and for sinking purposes. In 1909, this shaft was raised from the 1000-ft. (304-m.) level to the 700-ft. There a station was cut and an air hoist installed. At this time all mining operations were confined to the upper levels of the mine; that is, above the 700-ft. The ore was dropped to this level through chutes from the 300-, 400-, 500-, and 600-ft. levels and then lowered in cars on cages to the 1000-ft., which is the main haulage adit, the mill and railroad bins being about 3000 ft. from the shaft. Orebodies were, in due time, developed on the 1000-ft. level and below. Therefore, in 1913,the shaft was sunk to the 1150-ft. level and thereafter sinking was continued at regular intervals until the 1500-ft. level was reached. But, hoisting from the 1300-ft. level was a difficult and slow process with the antiquated air hoist, so, in 1916, it was decided to raise the shaft to the surface and install a modern, electrically operated hoist. This was completed early in 1917 and the hoist was in operation in March of that year. The Hoist Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show various features of the hoist and electrical equipment. A Nordberg engine of the double-drum, geared type, designed for a 10-ton load, including rope, at a speed of 1500 ft. per min., is used. The drums are 7 ft. (2.1 m.) in diameter, with a 54-in. (137-em.)

In the preparation of this paper the writer has been influenced by the fact that descriptions of various means of cleaning blast-furnace gas have been published and that further descriptive treatment of the subject will probably be less interesting than a statement of conclusions with regard to preferable methods which have been reached by him as a result of experience and observation in this country and also as a result of somewhat detailed investigation of the subject made toward the end of the year 1927 on the Continent of Europe and particularly in Germany. Owing to various circumstances, including a cost of fuel that is extremely high in relation to the wages of labor, the German iron and steel industry has accumulated experience in gas washing which is as yet in part lacking in the United States of America. The paper begins with a statement regarding the economics of the use of blast-furnace gas, then considers the principles and practices employed in its purification. Uses of Blast-furnace Gas For many reasons having to do with the utilization of coke-oven and blast-furnace gases in steel manufacture and with the use of hot metal, the blast furnace is now usually a part of a steel-producing unit, which also includes coke plant and rolling mill. Therefore both blast-furnace and coke-oven gas are usually applicable to any of the iron and steel-making processes, including the generation of power, and their allocation in any given works should be considered as a single problem. The uses to which blast-furnace gas, either alone or mixed with coke-oven gas may be put, include the following: Regenerative Heating of Ail. for the Blast Furnace.—This is the oldest and metallurgically the rnost important of all uses. It is universally performed with unmixed blast-furnace gas and under proper conditions should require not over 23.5 per cent. of the total gas generated for a blast temperature of 1350" F. For Steam-raising Purposes.—This is almost universally done with unmixed blast-furnace gas. From the standpoint of quantity used, it is at the present time the most important application in American steelworks practice.

As we look backward Our attention is directed forward. ONE hundred years ago, the manufacture of steel from molten pig iron without the use of fuel first began. In the earlier part of the nineteenth century the crucible process was the principal steelmaking method. It was a costly process, producing only a few pounds of steel at a time; so, most of the ferrous metal output was in the form of wrought or pig iron. With the perfection of the converter technique it became possible to produce low cost steel by the ton, thereby completely changing the structure, not only of the ferrous metal industry, but also of industrial production in general. This was the turning point from the Iron Age to the Age of Steel. William Kelly (Fig. 2), Sir Henry Bessemer (Fig. 1), and Joseph G. Martien experimented with the process before 1856. William Kelly began in Eddyville, Ky., in 1847 and has been given credit for first discovering the principle of the pneumatic converter process. Several years later in England Henry Bessemer independently conceived a steelmaking process similar to Kelly's. Bessemer made public his invention at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Cheltenham, England, August 1856. As a result of his paper, "On the Manufacture of Malleable Iron and Steel Without Fuel," and his progressive leadership in the years to follow, the process became permanently identified with the name, Bessemer. Credit for the commercial adaptation of the process must be given two additional persons. Robert Mushet (Fig. 3) in 1856 in England recognized the necessity of deoxidation and recarburization of the converter product and evolved the technique for adding high manganese iron following the blow. The following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geologists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. The Executive Committee of Marsman and Co., Inc., Managers of the Company, has kindly given permission for publication. Mr. J. B. Location of Area and Scope of Work San Mauricio Mining Co. controls a group of 113 claims that lie immediately north of the town of José Pafiganiban (formerly Mambulao), Camarines Norte, Luzon, P. I. (Fig. 1). Exploration work commenced in the spring of 1934; active development began in the fall of that year and has continued to the present date. Mill construction was begun Ocl,. 15, 1935, and production started March 10, 1936. Total production to June 1, 1939, is P10,499,105.15 ($5,249,552.57).

The structure of eutectics has been studied by a number of investigators, and the complexity of the structural relationship of the components has been agreed upon, especially that of the "eutectic colony," type III of Portevin's1 classification. This paper does not attempt to alter the present classifications of eutectics; rather, it discusses the relationship between the macrostructure and the microstructure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, and describes in detail the mechanism of the formation and the structure of the eutectic. Further, throughout the entire discussion it attempts to point out certain misconceptions in regard to the interpretation of the observed structure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, one of the so-called "eutectic colony" types, and to correlate as much as possible the work done by the writer with that done by other investigators. Of the three types of eutectics listed by Portevin,2 the eutectic colony type has presented the greatest difficulty in interpretation. Although the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic is typical of the eutectic colony type in appearance, it may not be truly representative because the copper forms about 96 per cent of the eutectic and the cuprous oxide about 4 per cent. The interpretation of the origin and structure of the "eutectic colony" given here is strictly limited, therefore, to the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic. Macrostructure Fig. 1 shows the macrostructure of the eutectic at 3 diameters, the melt having been chill-cast into an iron mold, the resulting specimen sawed into two parts and the section polished and etched with the usual mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide. This specimen contains 0.48 per cent oxygen and is only slightly hypereutectic. If such a melt is allowed to cool slowly, large macrograins will form without the columnar structure of Fig. 1 and the well-known phenomenon of liquation will occur, forming copper oxide dendrites at the top and copper

INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes characteristics of porphyry copper deposits within the Cordilleran orogen east of the Coast Range plutonic complex of the Yukon and British Columbia and south to the Columbia River plateau and the Idaho batholith. Porphyry copper deposits in this area reflect a geologic environment different from that found for mineralized intrusions elsewhere in the Cordilleran orogen, both to the south in the United States and Mexico and to the west in Alaska. A section on the Tertiary Cascade porphyry copper province is included herein. The Cascade province is considered separately because its deposits display a unique mineralogy and age of mineralization. That portion of the Cordilleran orogen described in this chapter is shown in Fig. 32, with the Cascades shown in Fig. 39 (see p. 114). The regional geology of this area has been described by Monger, et al. (1972), Hollister (1974), Wolfhard and Ney (1974), Field, et al. (1974), and Stacey (1974). Each offer slightly differing views on the post-Mississippian evolution of the geology in this porphyry copper province. The descriptive geology in this chapter has benefited from many discussions with J. E. Armstrong and J. W. H. Monger. Two separate petrologic models have been used popularly to categorize porphyry copper deposits in this area, a diorite and a quartz monzonite model. The diorite model, which involves a mineralized quartz-free pluton, has also been called the alkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976, and Soregaroli, 1975) and the syenite suite (Sutherland Brown, et al., 1971). The quartz monzonite model has also been named the calcalkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976) and includes mineralized quartz-bearing plutons compositionally ranging from quartz diorite to granite, with the igneous phase closest to ore in time and space commonly being quartz monzonite.

THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as upon control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with the raw materials of the basic open-hearth process that are important in determining the composition of the steel or slay. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, alloying and deoxidizing additions, and certain refractory materials used for maintenance of bottoms. Other refractories, which may affect the slag composition, are discussed in Chapter 3. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials but certain limiting relations among the elements of the charge must be observed. Since the process consists essentially of refining by the oxidation of undesired elements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters 2 and 7). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme is the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not oxidized or eliminated by any other reaction, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type is found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. In this case, metallic components of the charge other than the scrap should be low in copper, or a sufficiently high ratio, of pig iron to scrap should be charged to dilute the copper from the

IN the preceding chapter on thermochemistry and the reactions in and between metal and slag phases and in the following chapter on fuel combustion the main emphasis is placed on the equilibrium or "static" conditions. This equilibrium viewpoint is not concerned with the rate of change in the process or with the mechanisms or paths followed between initial and final states. The questions of just "how it works" and "how fast" belong to the kinetic aspect of any process; their answers are helpful in speeding up or slowing down and thus controlling its operation, and also in understanding its limitations. Any treatment of kinetic factors in the open hearth such as is attempted here and in Chapter 22 must at present be largely qualitative and incomplete. We are only beginning to get quantitative data on rates of reaction and diffusion at high temperatures, as indicated in Chapter 15. Empirical data in the literature on furnace operating rates do not help much to illuminate the details of gas-flow patterns and the complexities of heat flow in the many parts of the furnace system. This chapter is intended to give the reader an introduction to the problems of the flow of gases through the furnace system and the flow of heat in this system. An adequate discussion would require several times the space available here; it is possible here only to outline a few fundamentals and to indicate some of the conditions of heat and gas flow peculiar to the open hearth. Several good general treatments of these subjects may be found in the literature (see references at the end of the chapter). For the designer of open-hearth furnaces, the principles of gas flow are of paramount importance. They are also important to the operation of the process, at least to the extent of a general qualitative picture of the movement of gases in the system. In an article in the General Electric Review, January, 1915, reference was made to the X-ray examination of a steel casting 9/16 in thick. Fig. 1 shows one of the radiographs thus obtained. All these radiographs showed plainly the tool marks on the surface of the casting. All but one showed peculiar markings the shape of which strongly suggested that they were indeed the pictures of holes in the interior. A circular piece, 1 in. in diameter, was punched from the casting at a point where the radiograph shown in Fig. 1 indicated that a blow-hole should be found. (Location of sample shown by circle in Fig. l.) Fig. 2 is a photograph of the end of the punching, showing the hole that was found. Since that article was written it has seemed desirable: (1) to obtain data from which the exposure necessary for any thickness of steel could be at once calculated; (2) to find the thickness of the smallest air inclusion which could be radiographed in a given thickness of steel; (3) to determine in what direction to hope for further progress; and (4) to develop the technique of radiographing metals. In order to gain some preliminary data, several pieces of 1/2-in. (12.5-mm.) boiler plate were obtained, 5 by 7 in. (12.5 by 17.5 cm.) in size. In one of these, holes were drilled in such a way that the axis of each hole was midway between the faces of the steel and parallel to those faces. The experience of the past five years has furnished opportunities to study and to partially explain the operation and some of the causes of the short blast of Warwick Furnace at Pottstown, Pennsylvania, as described in the paper read at the Lake Superior Meeting, in August, 1880.* The many inquiries concerning the details of furnace operation which followed the publication of the paper, and the expressed desire of furnace managers to be informed as to future operations of this plant, have encouraged the preparation of the following data. To make the record continuous, and add to the value of both contributions, the present paper commences where the review of a short blast of Warwick Furnace ended, and includes the data of another short blast of two months, and a subsequent continuous campaign of nearly five years, which, by comparison, we shall designate as "the long blast." Frequent visits to the plant in the five years, during which its operation could be studied, and correspondence with the manager, Mr. Edgar S. Cook, have given a knowledge as to general features and details, and the courtesy of the officers of the Company which has given free access to the books of record permits the presentation of data which it is believed will be welcomed by furnace managers. Interest will undoubtedly be increased by the remarkable results which Mr. Cook has achieved chiefly with anthracite coal in a furnace whose details of construction will scarcely be generally admitted as embodying advanced ideas, its height being but 55 feet, with a bosh diameter of 15 feet 6 inches, its bosh-slope comparatively flat, its crucible smaller than the average, and the heat of the blast never reaching 1000' Fahrenheit. At present writing the credit of the best anthracite blast-furnace practice recorded in our Transactions is conceded to be that pursued by Mr. Fackenthal, at the Durham furnace, and Mr. Cook, at War-

Tensile properties of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy (APM) products at 600°, 800°, and 1000°F were lowered by cold reductions of as little as 10 or 20 pct. The detrimental effect of cold work on yield strength at elevated temperatures increased with temperature. Heating cold-worked products at 850° to 1150°F removed the structural effects of cold work through the process of recovery and restored, at least partially, the strength at 600°F to the level of hot-worked material. Material containing 5 pct A1203 was recrystallized by cold reductions of 97 pct or more followed by annealing at 1100°F. Recrystallization lowered sharply the strength at room temperature, but raised the strength at 600°and 800°F relative to that of the cold-worked state The high strength of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy (APM) products at elevated temperatures'-4 is well-known. In this paper, some conditions of processing that can affect this important characteristic are presented. The following nomenclature will be used to identify different alloys: All of the above alloys are of the aluminum-aluminum oxide type made from milled powders of commercially pure aluminum with the exception of M486, which is fabricated from atomized A1-Fe alloy powder. The products made from milled powders are hardened by a dispersion of aluminum oxide par- ticles in the aluminum matrix, while the intermetal-lic compound FeAL is the dispersion hardening agent in M 486.' The process used for making all APM products involves the application of heat and pressure to form a compact from powder which is fabricated into an extrusion, sheet, strip, or wire by standard techniques. Probably the most common cold-worked APM product is sheet. Cremens, Bryan, and rant' determined the room-temperature tensile properties and the 600°F stress-rupture properties of XAPOOl and XAPOO3 sheet and reported that there was little difference between the as-extruded, cold-worked, and annealed at 1200°F conditions. On the other hand, Emmons6" found that the tensile and stress-rupture properties of XAPOOl and XAPOO3 sheet at 600" and 800°F were lower than those of extrusions. The tensile properties of XAPOO3 sheet were also determined at elevated temperatures by Doyle' and ~ayward.' According to Friske" and Kendal et a1.," cold working by swaging, rolling, and tube drawing reduced the tensile and creep-rupture strength of XAP 001 Recrystallized aluminum powder metallurgy products are rare because the dispersion in the aluminum matrix is usually too fine, uniform, and concentrated to permit recrystallization. However, Lenel12 was able to recrystallize wires made from aluminum powders containing about 1.75 and 3.0 pct oxide and found that the tensile properties at room temperature remained higher than those of annealed commercially pure aluminum because of the dispersed oxide particles. Westerman and Lenel13 found the kinetics of recrystallization of the powder products were very different from those of cold-drawn commercially pure aluminum wire. The alloy containing 3.0 pct oxide recrystallized to a very coarse grain size was more creep-resistant at 400" to 600°C (752" to 1112°F) than in the as-extruded, fine-grained condition, according to Ansell and weertman.14 Ansell and aenel" further studied creep at 500" to 620°C (932" to 1148°F) of recrystallized 1.75 pct oxide wire and confirmed the creep model of Ansell and Weertman. The development of a water-input profile instrument based on the introduction of brine and fresh water into an input well with the electrical location of, the boundary developed between them is reported. Two methods are available in the use of this instrument to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of the various sand strata: the moving boundary method in which variable well bore diameters can be determined and/or cancelled out and the constant boundary method. The type of results obtained and the relative advantages of each of these methods are described in detail. Representative data are included covering the use of this instrument in experiments involving selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. In such experiments, this instrument has been used to diagnose the unfavorable distribution of water intake in input wells and also to determine the effectiveness of the resultant treatments. The data included also serve to illustrate the type of problems which can be studied with this technique. Introduction For ten years or perhaps longer a number of progressive water-flood operators have felt the need for some to to measure the foot by foot water-intake rates of various strata in water-injection wells. The primary need is to diagnose unfavorable water distribution in various strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of the corrective measures such as selective acidizing, selective plugging, and selective shooting. Previously described methods for obtaining this type of data were not considered entirely adequate.l,2 The profile equipment described in this paper embodies the separate introduction of brine and fresh water into the well at carefully measured and controlled rates and the electrical location of a sharp boundary developed between these fluids. At present this instrument is a research tool of value in determining the effect of various well treatments on an individual sand strata. lts primary use has been on wells in which different sections require different treatments (e.g., wells with an open sand to be plugged and a tight sand to be acidized)- It has, thus, made possible the determination of a rearrangement of the water intake of a well. The instrument can also be used to direct the treating material into a given zone. In completing a well the less permeable sands are shot more heavily with nitroglycerine in order to equalize the water intake between the permeable and less permeable sands. The extent to which such corrective shooting has been successful Can be determined by a water-input profile. The combined profile and well-bore diameters should also provide a method for determining the direction and effect of various selective shooting techniques. Equipment The essentials of the water-input profile technique for measuring the intake per foot of individual sand strata are the injection of a nonconducting fluid, water, at the top of the well and a conducting fluid, brine, through a separate string of

In this theoretical paper, a transport-reaction mechanism is suggested for the enhancement of the rate of vaporization of metals, or other materials, brought about by the process of convection and condensation. Based on theoretical reasoning it is predicted that, when there is a temperature gradient surrounding the heated object, a slight increase in the rate of vaporization brought about by natural convection is enhanced further as a result of condensation of the vapor close to the surface of the object. In order to derive the effective vapor-concentration profile, consideration is given to the super saturation of the vapor necessary for the homogeneous nucleation of the condensed phase from the vapor. For the formulation of the rate equation based on this mechanism, adequate information should be available on the transport properties of gases and vapors at elevated temperatures and the method of calculating nucleation pressures of the vapor. The methods of deriving such data are discussed in the paper and a rate equation is calculated for the vaporization of iron in helium for various temperature gradients in the boundary layer. Considerations are also given to the effect of oxygen on rates of vaporization of metals under isother ma1 and nonisotherma1 conditions. THE study of the methods of enhancement or retardation of basically transport-controlled vaporization reactions is of theoretical interest with possible practical implications. There are several ways of bringing about such effects. For example, Turk-dogan, Grieveson, and Darken1 demonstrated that the rates of vaporization of metals under isothermal conditions were increased by several orders of magnitude, up to the maximum rate attainable in vacuo, by introducing some reacting gas into the inert atmosphere surrounding the metal. Such an effect is brought about by the interaction of the counter-diffusing reacting gas and metal vapor in close proximity of the metal-gas interface. Another case which is often experienced in practice is that of vaporization affected by natural convection. Although several theoretical and experimental studies of this problem have already been made, no detailed consideration has been given to the possible effects of condensation of the vapor in the boundary layer on vaporization rates, which constitutes the subject matter of this paper. BASIC CONCEPT OF ENHANCED DIFFUSION-LIMITED VAPORIZATION When a heated object, for example a metal sphere, is submerged in a fluid medium, heat is transferred from the surface of the object to its surroundings by four simultaneously occurring transfer processes: i) free-molecular conduction at the gas-solid interface over the distance equal to the mean free path of the gas, ii) conduction and convection through the fluid-dynamic boundary layer, iii) latent heat of mass transferred, and it!) radiation. The free-molecular conduction becomes pronounced only when the total pressure in the system is very low, e.g., below 1 mm Hg. Therefore, this term may be neglected for ordinary pressures. At low mass-transfer rates, due to vaporization of the object, the contribution of process iii) to the heat transfer can also be neglected. Finally, since the temperature profile is not affected by radiation, the latter need not be considered. The structure of aluminum films obtained by evaporation was studied by electron microscopy, mostly by replica techniques and X-ray diffraction. The resistivities and stress conditions of the films were also determined. Film properties were studied as a function of source selection, substrate type, residual pressures of oxygen and water vapor, substrate temperature, and rate of growth. The formation of abnormal localized growths and whiskers resulting from annealing treatment subsequent to deposition was investigated. Films deposited onto single-crystal substrates were found to be epitaxially 0riented; for such films, relative orientations between films and substrates were determined. ALTHOUGH wide use has been made of evaporated aluminum films for the formation of conducting lines on semiconductor devices, relatively little has been reported concerning the structural characteristics of such films.1"9 The purpose of this study was to obtain an overall view of the dependence of these characteristics on film deposition and subsequent annealing conditions, which were similar to those used in silicon planar technology. Accordingly, most of this study was carried out using oxidized and bare silicon wafers as substrates, although some work was also done using alkali halide, magnesium oxide, and mica substrates. However, the main concern remained pragmatic. Emphasis was given to the study of the effects of deposition and annealing conditions on film characteristics such as structure, resistivity, and stress. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The films which were investigated in this study were deposited in 18-in.-diam glass chambers which were connected to the usual type of trapped diffusion pumps filled with silicon oil. Through the use of liquid-nitrogen-cooled Meisner traps and titanium sublimation pumps placed inside the deposition chambers, the pressure could be lowered to the lower portion of the 10- I Torr range and little increase in pressure would occur during the deposition cycle. Unless described otherwise, the substrates were 1-in.-diam p-type silicon wafers having a resistivity of 10 ohm-cm. The wafers were oxidized in wet oxygen at 975°C followed by a short dry-oxygen exposure at the same tempertture to a total oxide thickness of approximately 6000A. The wafers, backed by a layer of gallium, were mounted onto molybdenum discs brazed to a copper block.10 The latter was heated by imbedded commercial cartridge heaters. The substrate temperature could be maintained to within +10°C of a prescribed temperature during film deposition. THE American iron and steel manufacturer finds himself to-clay barely at the threshold of enormous possibilities for practicing rational economy in the use of fuels. The fuel cost is by no means the smallest of items which enter into the cost of manufacture of iron and steel products, but the great wealth of this country in high-grade fuels, together with a protective tariff, has heretofore made fuel economy relatively unimportant. In Germany, the use of raw coal for the purposes of iron and steel manufacture has been all but abandoned and large sums of money, formerly irrevocably wasted, are now being saved. When scanning the literature of this country devoted to the application of gas power, but little information will be found on a subject which, however, is destined to become of considerable importance in the United States, namely, the use of coke-oven gas for the generation of power in gas engines. This lack of information can be traced to the fact that the regenerative by-product coke oven with its large amount of surplus gas is still far from having attained in this country the universal application which it has found in Europe. This statement needs hardy any corroboration other than the evidence of statistical investigations made by E. W. Parker of the United States Geological Survey, according to which only approximately 25 per cent. of the total coke produced in this country in 1912 was made in by-product coke ovens, whereas 75 per cent. was produced in bee-hive ovens. This entailed the enormous loss of over $80,000,000 in non-recovered by-products, such as gas, tar, and ammonia, without considering the substantial loss due to the non-recovery of benzol from the coal. There are two more or less distinct fields of application of the by-product coke oven: one, to furnish as the main product metallurgical coke of specified quality, and surplus coke-oven gas as the by-product, and the other, to carbonize high-volatile coals, and thus produce as the main product large quantities of gas, high in heat value and rich in illuminants, adapted primarily for domestic heating and lighting, while domestic coke becomes the by-product.

THE practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i, e., heating to 7500 to 8000 C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching, in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge, of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was discovered by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev,(1) § although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

The mines of the Consolidated Gopper-mines Corporation are at Kimberly, in the Robinson mining district, White Pine County, Nevada. The blanket-like ore body is a disseminated copper deposit occurring in monzonite porphyry and, in general, is thoroughly fractured, altered, and soft. Contained in the porphyry ores of the extreme westerly end of the ore body are pendants of hard garnetized limestone. A younger monzonite porphyry underlies the ore-bearing porphyry, which in turn rests on limestone and shale. Block caving is the standard method of mining. Because of the undulating top and bottom contours of the ore body, the main haulage level was selected and driven at an elevation calculated to be the most economic depth below the major tonnage sections of ore. Fig. I shows a general section of the Emma Nevada ore body taken through its long axis, which lies roughly in an east-west direction. Mine openings in either type of porphyry require heavy timbering and constant maintenance and repair, particularly in horizons at or near the ore body contact. Where the ore lies close to the haulage level, slusher hoists and scrapers are used to transport horizontally the ore to the main haulage drift (Fig. 2). For the extraction of high-lying ores, a system of branch raises is used; and the ore is mined by gravity. Slushing methods are used also on the high-lying ore-body fringes. Slusher drifts are often driven from the fringe branch raises that have already served their purpose, in order to minimize the cost of the preparatory work in mining the thinner portions of the ore body (Figs. 3 and 4). When a block of ore is developed and undercut, it is economical to mine it as rapidly as the ore will cave efficiently; and this procedure often presents safety problems because of men with equipment working in a relatively congested area. The single-track main haulage drift is about 11/2 miles long, and lateral haulage drifts are driven under the ore body at intervals determined by the height of the ore body above the haulage level.
